2007-11-18 Thread SQeaky
Yeah, this bug causes a great deal of errors. I had slow boot time,
general unresponsiveness, and weird wireless disconnects. I did :

sudo apt-get remove dhcdbd

And my computer became noticeably faster, and I will be monitoring my
logs to see if any more of these errors are throw, but I think this was
the source.

Same problem here (but I'm not using -stask). Seems to be that the

[Bug 162821] Re: Settings root differs from that of bind9 package

2007-11-18 Thread DenisM
Maybe you're right, maybe not. Maybe it's not a bug. If it is a feature, it's a
wrong one, I think.
Is the tool intended to make the things easier? Suppose you're a teacher far
from IT. You must not know anything of file hierarchy of the service. Look at
Microsoft DNS - it's easy to setup! While BIND is a puzzle, and gbindadmin is a
puzzle too. (puzzle * puzzle) = (puzzle ^ 2).
Is it the Ubuntu mission to complicate things? I don't think so.

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-11-18 Thread Heikki Lindholm
I solved the problem by installing a custom kernel.org 2.6.23.8 kernel.
Configured with ubuntu .22 default config as basis but disabled all
suspicious new stuff, such as virtualization and tickless. No more XFS
filesystem corruption and no more debsums corruption even after apt
updates and new installs. I'd say there's a bug in ubuntu's kernel,
either in the xfs fs or in something related to cache flushes.

[Bug 66646] Re: Tablet PC Pen input stopped working from dapper to edgy to feisty

2007-11-18 Thread frith
Hi guys,

Not sure if this is a 'solution' as such, but since it works initially,
if you do a complete reinstall then the stylus will work. I wish there
were a better solution (hoping someone can work it out...), but for the
time being I got mine to work by backing up my home folder and doing a
reinstall (which also reformats the partition, so you will lose
everything you haven't backed up).

Not for the faint of heart :)

[Bug 139070] Re: [Gutsy] Ralink 2573 usb adapter does not work out of the box

2007-11-18 Thread vaab
Hi, same strange problems here too with default module from gutsy : link
can break between 5 minutes to 24 hours later... I made a quick script
that test ping and rmmods and re insmod when ping fails. This works half
the times and reconnects correctly (with dhclient, and ifconfig to set
up the adapter).

But half the time it doesn't make the trick : rmmod and insmod do not
seem to be able to bring a correct interface. And often, a simple rmmod
will freeze the entire computer.

Unplugging the adapter (which is a USB wifi dongle) and replugging it
will change the effect... so if I'm stuck with rmmod and insmod beiing
useless but not freezing the computer, usualy unsticking and replugging
the USB wifi dongle will give me chance to ... repair the connection or
to freeze the computer.

Finally, when I manage to get a connection for some period, it's quality
is real bad : very very slow, pings grows up very quickly up to 2
seconds with one or two

I do not know if this helps a lot. But I've tried Tim Gardner package
(which is in comment number 16), and this is WORSE : ifconfig seems
stuck in a endless loop : it slows the computer down and do not manage
to get past the mounting of the device (ifconfig up), this is really bad
as this is set at boot time.

So I'm heading towards 2.6.24/rt2x00 recompilation...

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-11-18 Thread Danijel Snajder
I confirm this bug too.

But, maybe i found something, well i dont know what exactly i do, but
here.

I reinstalled nvidia-glx-new, and ccsm. In CCSM / preferences / i made new
profile, he reset all to default values, i think this default values are
different from ubuntu default values, login is now faster and less messy. And
in CCSM i configure settings how i want in my new profile.
Or I also tryed there to change backend from "gconf configuration backend" to
"flat file configuration backend" - same result, or on general options, general
tab click on every "reset setting to default value", or in display settings -
outputs - put your resolution, so people try and let me know.

Maybe compiz and ccsm, had conflicts with "gnome compiz manager" which i
have installed at the same time, and then removed. Dont know what
exactly i do, but now is better...

[Bug 163732] malformed repository error disables synaptic; cannot correct in GUI

2007-11-18 Thread Charles A. McCarthy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

7.10, fresh install from desktop i386 CD, all updates through Nov 18 applied,
1.3GHz Athlon XP 1500+, abit NF7II board, 1GB ram. No other software
installed.
Using the GUI and Synaptic, I added the repository deb
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture,org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu gutsy
(you see that this is malformed with a comma after pculture and no / after
gutsy). After clicking on the Reload whirl, I got an error message saying I
had a malformed entry, and the only option was to close the error box. But this
also closed Synaptic. I tried reopening Synaptic a couple of times and each
time the same error box came up immediately and prevented me from removing or
correcting the bad entry.
(I finally opened a terminal window and edited /etc/apt/sources.list by
hand.)

I feel that the program logic before and/or after the error message
should be changed so that correction could be effected without leaving
Synaptic.

[Bug 163730] [x-window-manager] window manager doesn't works after failed update

2007-11-18 Thread Gabor Gelencser
Public bug reported:

Hi,

The update manager stopped at a 45-50% step while it said preparing for
gedit install. For about an hour. Gedit was open that time. When I
noticed I closed it, but no response from update manager. So after a
while I have xkilled its 2 windows. And tried restart it. No package
found to update, however it should have been remained 30 package.

Then I logoffed/restarted the PC.

After the restart> after logging in on gdm> no gnome, no gnome safe mode, no
xclient command file works in the session menu> only xterminal mode works.

[Bug 163727] soundfont does not seem to get automatically installed

2007-11-18 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: timidity

The default installation of timidity does not include a default
soundfont. As a result, MIDI files do not generate sound with the
default configuration.

Please ship a soundfont in the timidity package or a dependency thereof,
and configure timidity to play audio from provided MIDI in the default
configuration.

[Bug 163726] GRUB dual boot vs WinXP

2007-11-18 Thread WR.Peterson
Public bug reported:

Installing Kubuntu GG on second HDD works fine until next WinXP boot,
which is successful, but at the next boot, the computer does a "reboot
loop" just after POST (it goes thru POST then reboots, over and over
again). It appears to me that Windows XP is modifying the MBR on the
primary HDD. Reloading Kubuntu from LiveCD fixes it, but booting again
into XP causes the same problem to recur. I've started looking at GRUB
fixes, but don't have the expertise to troubleshoot this. Thanks.

[Bug 163725] brightness keys not working on macbook 3.1

2007-11-18 Thread sidgalt
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic, both i386 and
amd64 on my macbook 3.1. The brightness controls are not working. I have tried
with/without fn key+f1, +f1, fn key + + f1.
I also installed the apple keyboard patch
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10334998/hid-add-new-apple-keyboard.patch but
although the patch enabled the fn key, the brightness controls still don't
work. I also tried
installing pommed v1.11 but even that has no effect. I tried with fn=1 and fn=2
(in pommed.conf)

My macbook has Intel GMA x3100 for processing graphics while pommed.conf
has only gma950 in it.

PS - On the bootup of my newly compiled kernel, it says

i8042.c: No controller found

I compiled the kernel by getting the kernel source through - apt-get
linux-source,
installed the mactel updates and the keyboard and touchpad patches. I also
changed the
processor type to Core 2/New Xeon
The touchpad patch seems to be working fine.
Keyboard layout is Macbook/Macbook Pro

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

2007-11-18 Thread Xavi Miró
It happens the same to me. I have a NVIDIA Geforce 7300 and a AMD
Athlon 64 X2 4200+. GNOME freezes many times and the GNOME panel behaves
very unstably (some items don't work after some time and I can only
restart the OS).

It seems that I can work a little more time with GNOME if I disable the
option to turn off the monitor after some time. I have configured my
system to put a black screen when "inactive" instead and I switch off my
monitor manually when I'm not working with it for a long time.

Please try running
  sed "s/media.audio_cd.device:.*/media.audio_cd.device:\/dev\/cdrom/" -i

the problem appears to be, that your configuration is quite old and therefore
using the wrong device name (nowadays it's /dev/cdrom), so this command should
fix the issue.

[Bug 159940] Re: Leave message does not like "<

2007-11-18 Thread Basilio Kublik
this is slightly different to the both previous cases, in rhythmbox just
the ampersand, in the track title tag, trigger this bug, but since is
caused by the same reason than the previously included packages, the
inclusion of the package here seems, to me at least, adequate instead of
open a new bug. maybe I'm wrong but still, if that's the case, shouldn't
be too hard to solve this issue.

[Bug 163720] network-admin doesn't perform hostname data validation

2007-11-18 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

I was helping a beginner with his Feisty system. I kept getting a
temporary file creation error from gpg regarding some bizarre URL when I
tried to add a repo using apt-key. It took a while before I noticed the
rather obvious problem - his hostname was a URL and gpg uses the
hostname in the file name. I suspect he misunderstood the purpose of
the hostname box in network-admin and entered the URL to his ISP.
Apparently the app doesn't check an entered hostname for blatantly
invalid names like "http://hostname.com";.

for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 161122] Re: nm_applet prompts for password on startup

2007-11-18 Thread Karl
I'm the bloke who posted this bug, and it's now stopped happening, so
either an update worked, or some of my fiddling around did.

Here's what I think I did, but it's very possible that step 4 was all I
needed to do, so maybe just try that first.

One slight warning - doing this I've lost all the details about my wifi
connection - signal strength etc. from the top right of the menu. I'm
sure there are things I can download to give me that information, but
it's not important to me so I haven't bothered.

1. Switched back to putting in my password and login at boot (ie went into
System/Administration/Login window Security tab and I turned off enable
automatic login and rebooted), then made sure all my updates were up to date in
System/Administration/Update Manager).
2. In System/Administration/Network I went into the wireless connection and
turned off "Enable Roaming Mode" and put in my wireless details - WEP key, SSID
etc.
3. Rebooted and made sure wifi was still working.
4. Went back into System/Administration/Login window Security tab, turned back
on enable automatic login, and clicked off the checkbox that says "Deny TCP
connections to X-Server"

Next time I booted it went straight in without prompting for anything.

Hope this helps anyone else in the same boat.

Karl.

[Bug 163713] Function floor() doesn't exist

2007-11-18 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnumeric

The floor() function results in an error of "#NAME?" in any cell it is
used in. Other functions, such as sum() seem to work however. I did
not attempt an exhaustive search of functions which do and do not work.
I have tested this on both i386 and amd64 Gutsy with identical results.

[Bug 158629] Re: gutsy openoffice.org 2.3 spell checker does not work

2007-11-18 Thread A_arthur_N
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 44100 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/44100

I can confirm that this is was a problem for my Gutsy Gibbon Fresh
installation.

Work around is to reinstall the dictionary.

Can be done by File >> Wizards >> Install new Dictionaries

Select your language and pick the Dictionary and it should download it
and install it (make sure you tell it to replace ones that you already
have installed). It should download it and install it for you.

If you want to have this apply to all users you have to do it for each
user or open openoffice with

sudo ooffice

Then follow the same instructions.

[Bug 163711] lost ubuntu managing adept packages

2007-11-18 Thread randompretender
Public bug reported:

This is more of an issue rather than a bug, In the process of managing
packages on adept, I selected to install a package involving debian (I
can't remember which exactly) that unintentionally uninstalled all other
packages, all 2000 of them. I didn't mean to do that but my aim was to
recover other lost debian packages like my system settings
(kcm_displayconfig.la, kcm_colors.la, etc) that I had lost previously.
The loss of those packages was causing issues with my internet
connection and I was unable to use many settings because I had no .la
library files. I have very little knowledge about dealing with ubuntu
(I wiped it off my computer for example). Kubuntu is something a friend
of mine installed for me while leaving my windows driver alone. He
installed it on a seperate driver. So I want to know if there is a way
to recover linux ( I still have the option to boot into a different
version of ubuntu, but it stalls at a process saying waiting for root.)
or shall I reinstall the whole thing from some cds? Also, if I have to
reinstall linux from cd myself, where can I get the files? Can I burn
these cds on my regular cd burn drive (I can get the files online from
my windows connection) Or do I need a dvd burn drive? Please and
thanks for the response.

[Bug 163707] Re: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg should link with system ffmpeg libraries (libavcodec, etc)

2007-11-18 Thread John Dong
Ok, long story short after applying above patch and doing some source-
foo I got it to build against system ffmpeg in Hardy and Gutsy pbuilder
and tested playback of several media types with Totem Gstreamer with
great success. However, the debdiff is a bit dirty and I seek
guidance/review. Yes, it's 16K lines long, most of which are due to
cruft from running autoreconf recursing into the bundled ffmpeg and
generating spurious changes.

Rest assured that debian/patches/24_use-system-ffmpeg.patch is nothing
more than the small patch from upstream as linked in the original bug
description plus a autoreconf run.

I did the API migrations in debian/patches/25_ffmpeg-api-changes.patch
so that we can regenerate #24 properly with less monstrosity later on.

So, the TODO list left is:

(1) Removal of bundled ffmpeg from sources? Should we repack the orig.tar.gz to
remove the bundled ffmpeg as it's the cause of the huge debdiff and it's
unnneded code.
(2) Versioned ffmpeg build-deps? I have no idea what range of ffmpegs this API
will be valid for, do we need to put a versioned dep or not? Currently I left
them unversioned.
(3) Additional testing? I've only tested playback of H.264+AAC,
MPEG4-ASP(Xvid)+MP3 in totem-gstreamer. I don't feel satisfied with these test
cases. How else can we test this package?

#1 and #2 need to be addressed before uploading this anywhere, but I
think #3 can be tested in Hardy repos since we still are very early in
development and there's no apparent signs of mass breakage.

2007-11-18 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

According to the debian bug you have given, the problem was fixed in version
0.76, which is the one in Ubunty 7.10 (Gutsy).
