[Bug 59695] Re: no fix working !
Brian, I do agree with you... it seems that hdparm has no effect on my HD APM settings. To answer your questions, I think I'm using well hdparm -- I fixed the click problem of a friend computer by this way -- and the Samsung tool is working (I used 2 differents version, both on bootable CD's). So your advice to contact hdparm team to see if they know about that issue is my best solution, as you said. Thanks a lot for these discussions, and keep the pressure on the Ubuntu team in order to manage this problem in a better/safer way than now (and by default). Unfortunatly, I think this bug cause(d) prejudices to Ubuntu distribition, even if it is not specific to it... more and more people using Linux (and especially Ubuntu), went to this world to see "the other side" with "windows skills" and do not want to spend time with the many hand settings to do in their computer (it is not my case ;) ): they just want a "ready to use solution without configuration". And it was a goal of Ubuntu : attrack more people from other OS to Linux world, showing them it is a serious option ! They may be disapointed by such big problem and "never" come back to Linux ! [Bug 176299] INTERFACE_MAX is not proper
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openais Description of problem: exec/totem.h defines INTERFACE_MAX to 2. This is very limiting and it is not coherent with the rest of the cluster stack. openais limits to 2 kernel dlm to 3 dlm_controld to 4 Those values should be at least alligned to 4 or higher. In theory a dynamic allocation here would be the winner. with the default set to 2, configuring 3 rings in openais.conf (passive mode, since active it totally broken), will lead openais to crash because of memory corruption (there is no protection within the code to try to init and config only INTERFACE_MAX). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): trunk How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. given default svn checkout 2. configure INTERFACE_MAX + 1 rings in passive mode 3. fire up aisexec. (tested on amd64 with glibc-2.7 will report memory corruption detected by glibc) Actual results: aisexec crashes and dies. [Bug 176301] Should provide a flag to disable ptrace()/LD_PRELOAD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apparmor It would be great if AppArmor had a flag to start a program in a way so that ptrace()/LD_PRELOAD and similar vectors are disabled, just what the kernel does when running a setuid/setgid binary. Doing this for normal user session programs like ssh, gnupg, gnome-screensaver, etc. would have the benefit that malicious programs in the user's session could not spy the password out of the program's memory. I gave some details about the rationale and an initial implementation idea on LKML: http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0712.1/2025.html However, Alan Cox raised a good point about using MAC systems for this, which already have a rich rule system, instead of fiddling with ELF headers, etc. Would it be possible to implement that in AppArmor? Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to free software. I don't think that Pidgin or XMPP protocol (used by Googletalk) support this. I know I know, my fault for forgetting to look at the packages before installing. Well the problem here is that I cannot install Amarok again. [Bug 84729] Re: [totem-xine]Mpeg playback from windows share really choppy
Hi, I know this bug is 10 months old, but I wanted to report the same type of behavior under Ubuntu 7.10, with Totem Movie Player 2.20.0 using xine-lib version 1.1.7. I use totem-xine, mostly due to it's abilities to play DVDs (with menu navigation), which is a big deal. I have no problems streaming other movie formats, like AVI, only MPEGs. I'd like to note that some MPEGs seem to stream over the network just fine, and this is what I've found while testing a number of video files: Streams Fine: video: Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 (ffmpeg) audio: MS Windows Media Audio 2 (ffmpeg) Streams Poorly or Not At All (pauses / freezes totem): video: MPEG (libmpeg2) audio: MPEG audio layer 2 (lib: MAD) Perhaps the problem lies with the performance of libmpeg2 or libMAD? Just thought I'd add to report, since it was the only one I could find specific to totem-xine having problems streaming MPEGs. -- [totem-xine]Mpeg playback from windows share really choppy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/84729 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 176273] USB key dmcrypt/LUKS, not properly unmounting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal I have a 2GB USB key on which I have a single partition encrypted using dmcrypt/LUKS (cryptsetup). I have two separate Ubuntu machines in which I use this key (both Gutsy). BOTH machines have the exact same symptoms. Here's the sequence of events: 1) Open Nautilus 2) Plug in USB key 3) Immediately, a new "place" appears in Nautilus, "Kingmax USB2.0" 4) I am prompted for a password, I supply it 5) The "place" in Nautilus now becomes USB_CRYPT 6) I use the key, everything works. 7) I right-click on USB_CRYPT and unmount 8) Immediately the "place" becomes "Kingmax USB2.0" 9) Remove USB key 10) The "place" in Nautilus disappears (yes, so far everything is normal & happy) 11) Repeat steps 1-9 12) Now the place doesn't disappear. It still says "Kingmax USB2.0" even though the key is removed 13) Plug key back in 14) Nothing happens. 15) Right-click on "Kingmax USB2.0" and click on mount 16) Receive error: "Cannot mount volume Unable to mount the volume 'USB_CRYPT'. v Details mount: special device /dev/mapper/luks_crypto_f96d0ee5-dd93-4e72-861e-164f39f14771 does not exist" 17) Open command line, type "sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdg1 usb_crypt_vol" 18) The "place" in Nautilus once again becomes USB_CRYPT and I can access the drive 19) I unmount the drive as before, and remove the key, and I'm back to where I was at step 12 20) Type "sudo cryptsetup luksClose usb_crypt_vol" to remove the mapper device 21) Repeat 13-19 and I'm actually back to where I started when I reboot (one good mount cycle, then bad mount cycle) This happens EVERY time. And I feel like sometimes I run the cryptsetup luksOpen command and it doesn't auto-re-mount. I have added a script to my panel and to visudo so that I can run the commands manually without admin password, but it's quite annoying.
