[Bug 152689] Re: USB bluetooth device floods errors to syslog

2007-12-13 Thread Ossi Berg
So there were no help from new kernel in Hardy. I found a suitable fix
for this: In vanilla kernel source changing instance in file
drivers/bluetooth/hci_usb.c does the trick.

Under comment

/* RTX Telecom based adapters with buggy SCO support */

A new line is added:

{ USB_DEVICE(0x0e5e, 0x6622), .driver_info = HCI_BROKEN_ISOC },

I hope this helps.

[Bug 59695] Re: no fix working !

2007-12-13 Thread Mathieu HAVEL
Brian,

I do agree with you... it seems that hdparm has no effect on my HD APM
settings.

To answer your questions, I think I'm using well hdparm -- I fixed the
click problem of a friend computer by this way -- and the Samsung tool
is working (I used 2 differents version, both on bootable CD's).

So your advice to contact hdparm team to see if they know about that
issue is my best solution, as you said.

Thanks a lot for these discussions, and keep the pressure on the Ubuntu
team in order to manage this problem in a better/safer way than now (and
by default). Unfortunatly, I think this bug cause(d) prejudices to
Ubuntu distribition, even if it is not specific to it... more and more
people using Linux (and especially Ubuntu), went to this world to see
"the other side" with "windows skills" and do not want to spend time
with the many hand settings to do in their computer (it is not my case
;) ): they just want a "ready to use solution without configuration".
And it was a goal of Ubuntu : attrack more people from other OS to Linux
world, showing them it is a serious option ! They may be disapointed by
such big problem and "never" come back to Linux !

[Bug 176299] INTERFACE_MAX is not proper

2007-12-13 Thread Fabio Massimo Di Nitto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openais

Description of problem:

exec/totem.h defines INTERFACE_MAX to 2. This is very limiting and it is not
coherent with the rest of the cluster stack.

openais limits to 2
kernel dlm to 3
dlm_controld to 4

Those values should be at least alligned to 4 or higher.

In theory a dynamic allocation here would be the winner.

with the default set to 2, configuring 3 rings in openais.conf (passive mode,
since active it totally broken), will lead openais to crash because of memory
corruption (there is no protection within the code to try to init and config
only INTERFACE_MAX).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

trunk

How reproducible:

always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. given default svn checkout
2. configure INTERFACE_MAX + 1 rings in passive mode
3. fire up aisexec.

(tested on amd64 with glibc-2.7 will report memory corruption detected
by glibc)

Actual results:

aisexec crashes and dies.

Expected results:

should work no matter how many rings i configure. hardcoded limitations are bad
and it is not even documented.

[Bug 176301] Should provide a flag to disable ptrace()/LD_PRELOAD

2007-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

It would be great if AppArmor had a flag to start a program in a way so
that ptrace()/LD_PRELOAD and similar vectors are disabled, just what the
kernel does when running a setuid/setgid binary. Doing this for normal
user session programs like ssh, gnupg, gnome-screensaver, etc. would
have the benefit that malicious programs in the user's session could not
spy the password out of the program's memory.

I gave some details about the rationale and an initial implementation
idea on LKML:

  http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0712.1/2025.html

However, Alan Cox raised a good point about using MAC systems for this,
which already have a rich rule system, instead of fiddling with ELF
headers, etc.

Would it be possible to implement that in AppArmor?

Thanks for considering!

This is an upstream wishlist bug, but Launchpad does not allow me to
file an upstream bug against AppArmor.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2007-12-13 Thread donzilluh
My laptop was showing these symptoms. It's a HP DV6645us bought only 2
months ago on Oct 10th. I just recently installed Ubuntu and stumbled
upon this article with only 9 hours of uptime. So I feel as I have
lucked out. This is a very harmful bug though and needs to be
incorporated into the automatic software updates somehow. I am a linux
semi-noob and this one truly scared me.

  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 099 099 000Old_age Always
 866

This shows a rate of almost 100 cycles per hour. My disk's total load
cycle count is only 24,617, considering this is from only 2 months of
use and 9 hrs of gutsy gibbon uptime I am very thankful Gilles Schintgen
discovered this bug.

Hello --- Re- deleting temp site. no effect, sorry.
It might be a conflict with one of the upgrades. Sorry, I'll keep your address

(I realize it's a bit of a pain, but so-far, the only solution is to save all

is what leads me to think it's one of the upgrades causing the conflict. There

hello -- I have the same problem --- Screem just shuts down for no
 apparent reason.
I notice you say it happens when you try to work on css or php files,
and I've noticed the same thing.
Got a site folder open, various site pages open , but when I try to
open and work on the corresponding css file, screem shuts down. And when I
restart, it recognizes all the html files and restarts with them open,
 but drops the css file.
I had experienced this problem once before, and reinstalled screem
which seemed to cure the problem, but now I'm starting to think it might
have something to do with having more than one site on the go.
i.e. it doesn't seem to do this if I've only got one official site, but
if I have more than one site, it seems do this.
i'd been running and working in screem for several weeks without this
problem, but yesterday i needed a temporary site, started one, and now
it's doing it again. Will try deleting my temporary site to see if
 this will cure the problem.
ps the temporary site was using the same css files.

[Bug 176286] Problems with apt

2007-12-13 Thread drunknmunky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept

Ran sudo apt-get update from the command line to install some new packages.
Saw that it needed to remove a few other ones before putting them on. I didn't
think too much of that since I've seen that a few times already since switching
to Hardy. Now adept is gone and won't reinstall without libapt-pkg-libc6.6-4.5
which doesn't seem to exist anywhere. I have all repositories enabled. Either
the dependencies need to be modified to point to the right package (I've seen
dependencies on adept related packages and libept0, consequently
kubuntu-desktop relies on it) or the package needs to be added to the
repository. Synaptic and apt-get still seem to work fine.
Running Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha, with KDE4/KDE3/Gnome all running. Doesn't seem to
matter which one I'm using regarding this problem.

[Bug 111145] Re: sigmatel STAC9250 on ATI HDA SB on gateway laptop - no sound capture

2007-12-13 Thread DanaGoyette
Another note: Since apparently each port can be either input or output,
would it be possible to allow the "mic as output" or "line-in as output"
options for this audio chip? In addition, I noticed that ALSA reports
some IEC958-related pins, even though my notebook lacks a physical
output. However, there are no mixer controls for this nonexistant
output.

Another note: once the audio driver loads, PC speaker entirely breaks.
I suppose that may be considered a good thing, though.

cat /dev/dsp
(hangs for a while, and then:)cat: /dev/dsp: Input/output error

Another feature that's deliberately hidden in the XP drivers, and
entirely removed in the Vista drivers, is Stereo Mix recording. Is
there any chance of enabling this in the ALSA drivers? I'd imagine the
function may be entirely software, though.

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

2007-12-13 Thread Rubin
I can't speak to others, but to reproduce my problem, I can guess it would be
very easy:
Borrow a Lenovo thinkpad T61 with intel video option (very common laptop).
Install ubuntu Gutsy on it. Try to use 3d. Theres nothing weird about the
setup, its right out of the box. I have yet to find a 3d application with a
lot of things going on that does NOT crash eventually. Its not elusive, at
least on my hardware.

Seems like intel and/or lenovo could be tagged to help make this
happen

[Bug 176275] Re: unable to send messages with google talk, receive xmpp message error

2007-12-13 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to free software.

I don't think that Pidgin or XMPP protocol (used by Googletalk) support
this. If pidgin only give you a error message when you try to send a
message to yourself, it's already a good behavior. I suggest that you
talk about this issue with Pidgin developers in IRC #pidgin channel in
freenode servers. you can also file this bug report in the bug tracking
system of Pidgin in order to make sure that your bug report is seen by a
Pidgin developer and link the new bug report to this one.

I can reproduce that bug with my own googletalk account with Pidgin, so
I set the status to confirmed.

[Bug 176277] amarok is not installable on hardy

2007-12-13 Thread hyperair
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libxine1

The recent upgrade forced Amarok off my system before I knew what
happened. I know I know, my fault for forgetting to look at the packages
before installing. Well the problem here is that I cannot install Amarok
again. To summarize it, amarok depends on amarok-engine or amarok-xine,
and amarok-xine depends on libxine1. libxine1 is not installable because
libxine1 depends on libxine1-console, libxine1-plugins/libxine1-misc-
plugins, and libxine1-x. libxine1-console depends on libxine1-bin. And
libxine1-bin conflicts with libxine1. So libxine1 is not installable,
and hence Amarok is not.

[Bug 57233] Re: Minor revision 2.6.15-26 doesn't detect attached SCSI disks to LSI 1030ST

2007-12-13 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
I ran into another problem. After (mistankingly) trying to install the
-686 package, I couldn' t seem to remove it. I had to do this:

1) sudo touch /lib/modules/2.6.15-51-686
2) sudo dpkg -r linux-backports-modules-2.6.15-51-686
You should get a FATAL error, however it will remove part of the package

3) sudo dpkg --purge linux-backports-modules-2.6.15-51-686
You should now get complete removal. Issuing this last command again will give
an error about unexisting package confirming its complete removal.

We tried the proposed fix and it didn't work. I am waiting for a copy of
the output of initial booting sequence, although it didn't get very far.

[Bug 174935] Re: please update F-Spot 0.4.1 released

2007-12-13 Thread Matvey Kozhev
F-Spot 0.4.1 has been uploaded to Debian, but is still in
incoming.debian.org. I'll change this to a sync bug once it is uploaded
to the archive.

For now, the debian/changelog entry:

f-spot (0.4.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Mirco Bauer ]
  * New upstream version.
+ Fixes NDesk.Glitz FTBFS. (Closes: #441686)
+ Fixes crash when double clicking an image or attaching a tag while the
  image is open. (Closes: #447986)
  * debian/control:
+ Added myself to Uploaders.
+ Updated cli-common-dev build-dependency to >= 0.4.4.
+ Updated Standards-Version to 3.7.3, no changes needed.
+ Added sqlite and sqlite3 to Suggests, needed for the
  f-spot-sqlite-upgrade script.
+ Added libflickrnet2.1.5-cil, libmono-addins0.2-cil and
  libmono-addins-gui0.2-cil to build-dependencies.
  * debian/copyright:
+ Rewritten, checked copyright and licenses of all source files.
  * debian/patches/01_build-system.dpatch:
+ Disabled as upstream allows to link against system ndesk-dbus now.
  * debian/patches/10_cs-changes.dpatch:
+ Disabled as PicasaWeb export, .kdc file support and sqlite3 support are
  already fixed upstream.
  * Added beagle-dev to build-dependencies for beagle support.
  * debian/patches/fix_libfspot_linkage.dpatch
debian/patches/fix_libfspoteog_linkage.dpatch
debian/patches/fix_libfspotjpegtran_linkage.dpatch:
+ Wrote patch to link correctly against used libraries.
  * debian/patches/20_refresh-menus-on-extensions.dpatch:
+ Refresh the Export and Tools menus on new or removed extensions.
  (upstream SVN revision: 3478)
(thanks to Matvey Kozhev <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for the dpatch and
   investigation)
  * debian/patches/link_system_libs.dpatch:
+ Link against the Mono.Addins and FlickrNet debian packages instead of the
  bundled versions.
  * debian/patches/forward_port_to_flickrnet_2.1.5.dpatch:
+ API forward port for FlickrNet 2.1.5.
  * debian/patches/detect_sqlite2_databases.dpatch:
+ Wrote patch to detect an existing sqlite2 database during startup of
f-spot and print out upgrade instructions.
  * debian/rules
debian/patches/99_ltmain_as-needed.dpatch:
+ Pass --as-needed to linker for lesser dependencies.

  [ Tim Retout ]
  * New upstream version. (Closes: #436298, #446409)
  * New maintainer. (Closes: #453474)
  * Acknowledge NMUs by Margarita Manterola.
(Closes: #435697, #427287, #401647)
  * Use dpatch to manage patches.
  * debian/watch: Update to look for 0.4.x versions, not 0.1.x.
  * debian/control:
+ Added myself to Uploaders.
+ Add build dependency on dpatch.
+ Add new Homepage field.
+ Add new Vcs-* fields.

 -- Mirco Bauer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 13 Dec 2007 20:57:10 +0100

Regarding Ubuntu changes:
- All changes taken from upstream SVN in 0.4.0-0ubuntu2 can be dropped -
they're fixed in upstream release 0.4.1.
- Change in 0.4.0-0ubuntu3 to update translation files can be dropped - they
have been updated upstream.

Therefore, the Debian release can be synced as is, rather than merged.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

[Bug 84729] Re: [totem-xine]Mpeg playback from windows share really choppy

2007-12-13 Thread kaervos
Hi, I know this bug is 10 months old, but I wanted to report the same
type of behavior under Ubuntu 7.10, with Totem Movie Player 2.20.0 using
xine-lib version 1.1.7. I use totem-xine, mostly due to it's abilities
to play DVDs (with menu navigation), which is a big deal. I have no
problems streaming other movie formats, like AVI, only MPEGs.

I'd like to note that some MPEGs seem to stream over the network just
fine, and this is what I've found while testing a number of video files:

Streams Fine:
video: Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 (ffmpeg)
audio: MS Windows Media Audio 2 (ffmpeg)

Streams Poorly or Not At All (pauses / freezes totem):
video: MPEG (libmpeg2)
audio: MPEG audio layer 2 (lib: MAD)

Perhaps the problem lies with the performance of libmpeg2 or libMAD?
Just thought I'd add to report, since it was the only one I could find
specific to totem-xine having problems streaming MPEGs.

[Bug 176273] USB key dmcrypt/LUKS, not properly unmounting

2007-12-13 Thread casperlingus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I have a 2GB USB key on which I have a single partition encrypted using
dmcrypt/LUKS (cryptsetup). I have two separate Ubuntu machines in which I use
this key (both Gutsy). BOTH machines have the exact same symptoms.
Here's the sequence of events:

1) Open Nautilus
2) Plug in USB key
3) Immediately, a new "place" appears in Nautilus, "Kingmax USB2.0"
4) I am prompted for a password, I supply it
5) The "place" in Nautilus now becomes USB_CRYPT
6) I use the key, everything works.
7) I right-click on USB_CRYPT and unmount
8) Immediately the "place" becomes "Kingmax USB2.0"
9) Remove USB key
10) The "place" in Nautilus disappears
(yes, so far everything is normal & happy)
11) Repeat steps 1-9
12) Now the place doesn't disappear. It still says "Kingmax USB2.0" even
though the key is removed
13) Plug key back in
14) Nothing happens.
15) Right-click on "Kingmax USB2.0" and click on mount
16) Receive error:
"Cannot mount volume
Unable to mount the volume 'USB_CRYPT'.
v Details
mount: special device
/dev/mapper/luks_crypto_f96d0ee5-dd93-4e72-861e-164f39f14771 does not exist"
17) Open command line, type "sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdg1 usb_crypt_vol"
18) The "place" in Nautilus once again becomes USB_CRYPT and I can access the
drive
19) I unmount the drive as before, and remove the key, and I'm back to where I
was at step 12
20) Type "sudo cryptsetup luksClose usb_crypt_vol" to remove the mapper device
21) Repeat 13-19 and I'm actually back to where I started when I reboot (one
good mount cycle, then bad mount cycle)

This happens EVERY time. And I feel like sometimes I run the cryptsetup
luksOpen command and it doesn't auto-re-mount. I have added a script to
my panel and to visudo so that I can run the commands manually without
admin password, but it's quite annoying.

Is there any extra information I can provide to help diagnose/fix the
problem?

-Casper

[Bug 152820] Re: Upgrade to linux-image-2.6.22-14 kernel renders my PC unbootable

2007-12-13 Thread Kamba
Ok. I'll open a new bug.
No, i do not have EXACTLY the same hardware configuration as topic starter. BUT!

>From september i have reported about my problem in some existing bugreports,
>and created the new one
>https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/151088
which even remains unanswered! From the beginning of october!!! So, whats the
point to create another one NEW bug report?

Here, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/123789 , i, among many others, reported about boot
problem on laptops. Different laptops, different hardware - but one
problem.

Here is another report i commented:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/150739

It is not only my problem, or problem of some specific configuration. It
is laptop problem, i think.

Here is my case:

"for last half-an-hour tried to boot on 2.6.22-14 kernel in recovery
mode. It stops on different places every time, so i do not know, how
log/dmesg useful would be. For one attempt i've even saw a [EMAIL PROTECTED]
sign. When i typed "startx" - KDE started but have freezed on
"initializing services" - the second graphics icon."

one more

"Kernel 2.6.22 hangs every time at different places. Sometimes after
"Searching for file needed to boot", sometimes even after a type
"startx", sometimes on another points of booting progress."

I have Asus X50M. Nvidia GeForce GO 6100. Upgrade to Gutsy from original
sources in Adept Manager

Sorry for, maybe, too demandful post, but i am just tired of this. I use
2.6.20-15-generic for now, and i cann't install nvidia graphics driver
on this, i cann't open .mdb files from MS Access...

So many problems hard to solve, if you are not supermegaarchy system
administrator. is it user friendly OS? i just don't want to install MS
products again...

[Bug 159471] Re: Kompose handbook is missing information and in the wrong location

2007-12-13 Thread ardchoille
** Summary changed:

- Kompose handbook is a mess
+ Kompose handbook is missing information and in the wrong location

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kompose

- I noticed that the Kompose handbook/docs are in the wrong place on my

- /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kompose/index.docbook.gz) speaks of many
- things which have nothing to do with the kompose app. Examples:

that way :) It's just a configuration option that hasn't been well
documented.

The Pictures screensaver uses the XDG directories. Those are configured
in your ~/.config/user-dis.dirs file. Specifically the
"XDG_PICTURES_DIR" entry. If you adjust that it'll use a different set
of pictures.

[Bug 176271] major throughput difference (between upload and download) when using iwl3945

2007-12-13 Thread Matthew Fisher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic

Per this bug report (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22/+bug/158045
 )
and all the problems surrounding ipw3945--including my own connection dropping
under x86 and inoperability
under amd64--I started using the iwl3945 module as a replacement.

When transferring files (I've used rsync and scp), I noticed a huge difference
in the throughput between
uploading and downloading. I only jotted down the rates of a single 250MB file
via scp (and I know there
is overhead involved) with an UL rate of around 1 MB/s and a DL rate of 103
KB/s.
Rsync is faster, of course, but the transfer ratio is about the same.

"uname -a" reports:
Linux system76 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

The relevant portion about the network chipset from "lspci -v" is:
Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
(rev 02)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Unknown device 1000
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
Memory at f800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [d0] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [e0] Express Legacy Endpoint IRQ 0

This occurs when running x86 Gutsy on the current revision of the System76
Serval Performance.
Please let me know if/what additional information you need.

[Bug 172625] Re: Dolphin won't keep settings across sessions

2007-12-13 Thread ardchoille
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: dolphin-kde4

In dolphin, I have enabled View > Show hidden files, and I have set View
  > Adjust view properties to:

  Show hidden files = checked
Apply view properties to = All folders

I then clicked Apply, then Yes, then clicked OK. When I restart dolphin,
- all of these settings are gone. I can't figure out how to "show hidden
- files" by default in dolphin and have that behavior be permanent. It is
- my opinion that if we are going to keep dolphin as the default file
- manager, it should be much more robust, flexible, and bug-free.
+ these settings have reverted back to the defaults. I am trying to "show

[Bug 77786] Re: Printing with firefox does not work

2007-12-13 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
With
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2007 mozilla.org
and
Mozilla Firefox-3.0 3.0b1, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2007 mozilla.org
on Gutsy, it is still broken. I can't print my Tomboy notes that were exported
to HTML because only the first page is there. It seems to have trouble with
breaking divs, because I got stuff on the 2nd page one time, and that time it
had truncated about a page-worth of stuff from the end of one div and started
the 2nd page at the start of the next div.

[Bug 148189] Re: gdm refuses to display on external monitor

2007-12-13 Thread Daniel Goldsmith
Wow. I didn't really expect this to work, but now it does -- it even associates
my monitor section correctly, as it would not do before (Option
"Monitor-TMDS-1" "monitorsection" did not previously work, but does now). Sweet
:-D
Still, I wonder what causes the underlying problem. It may be that it expects
VGA output to be there. Or something.
