[Bug 230174] Re: [Gutsy] ssh installation results in COMPROMISED keys
First, because you have a custom non-gutsy libssl0.9.8, I think this establishes the non-bugness of this report. I would suggest to the owner of this bug ticket that this be turned into a help request instead. In response to the rest of the message: the 5ubuntu3.1 version no longer exists in the security repository. If you use the same link, but change the 3.1 to 3.2, it'll work better. Normally I'd just suggest you apt-get install libssl0.9.8 (without --reinstall), but because you manually upgraded to a non-gutsy version of libssl0.9.8, this is unlikely to work. But yes, try downloading the package as mentioned above, and see if you can install it by hand. It may break some packages, especially the ones that brought in the non- gutsy libssl. [Bug 230878] [NEW] Apache 2 produces an OOM after 4 hours using
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apache2 After upgrading my web server from Ubuntu Gutsy to Hardy, I couldn't get Apache 2 working correctly. I thought at first, that I was experiencing this bug : #224945 . But this one deals with memory leaks when mod_ssl is enabled. So, because I'm not using it on apache, I've decided to unload it. But it hasn't changed a thing. I've also updated my apache's version to get the latest, with the bug fixed. Nothing has changed so far... My problem is, after approximately four hours of execution, apache is overloading and taking all the memory and the swap so that my system produces an Out of memory error which wants to kill apache2 but doesn't succeed, which leads to a system crash. The weird thing is that the OOM error sometimes tries to kill other processes... Here's a dump from /var/log/syslog when an OOM happens : May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8267.512850] Out of memory: kill process 7986 (apache2) score 19064 or a child May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8267.513008] Killed process 7986 (apache2) May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.323940] apache2 invoked oom-killer: gfp_mask=0x1201d2, order=0, oomkilladj=0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.323974] Pid: 8012, comm: apache2 Not tainted 2.6.24-16-server #1 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324051] [oom_kill_process+0x10a/0x120] oom_kill_process+0x10a/0x120 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324136] [out_of_memory+0x167/0x1a0] out_of_memory+0x167/0x1a0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324186] [agpgart:__alloc_pages+0x34c/0x380] __alloc_pages+0x34c/0x380 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324248] [__do_page_cache_readahead+0x11d/0x240] __do_page_cache_readahead+0x11d/0x240 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324314] [do_page_cache_readahead+0x4c/0x70] do_page_cache_readahead+0x4c/0x70 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324344] [filemap_fault+0x2f2/0x420] filemap_fault+0x2f2/0x420 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324408] [__do_fault+0x83/0x4c0] __do_fault+0x83/0x4c0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324437] [libata:kunmap_atomic+0x2d/0x2e90] kunmap_atomic+0x2d/0x80 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324480] [do_wp_page+0x460/0x650] do_wp_page+0x460/0x650 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324510] [deadline_move_request+0x59/0x70] deadline_move_request+0x59/0x70 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324527] [elv_dispatch_add_tail+0x1c/0x60] elv_dispatch_add_tail+0x1c/0x60 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324590] [handle_mm_fault+0x21b/0xb80] handle_mm_fault+0x21b/0xb80 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324697] [sched_clock+0x13/0x30] sched_clock+0x13/0x30 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324771] [do_page_fault+0x143/0x900] do_page_fault+0x143/0x900 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324797] [__do_softirq+0x82/0x110] __do_softirq+0x82/0x110 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324864] [do_page_fault+0x0/0x900] do_page_fault+0x0/0x900 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324881] [error_code+0x72/0x78] error_code+0x72/0x78 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324920] [unix_create1+0x50/0x120] unix_create1+0x50/0x120 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324971] === May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324979] Mem-info: May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324986] DMA per-cpu: May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.324996] CPU0: Hot: hi:0, btch: 1 usd: 0 Cold: hi:0, btch: 1 usd: 0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325008] Normal per-cpu: May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325018] CPU0: Hot: hi: 186, btch: 31 usd: 143 Cold: hi: 62, btch: 15 usd: 52 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325035] Active:86718 inactive:10 dirty:0 writeback:0 unstable:0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325042] free:981 slab:3338 mapped:1 pagetables:1909 bounce:0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325058] DMA free:1556kB min:104kB low:128kB high:156kB active:10512kB inactive:0kB present:16256kB pages_scanned:52482 all_unreclaimable? yes May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325071] lowmem_reserve[]: 0 364 364 364 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325090] Normal free:2368kB min:2384kB low:2980kB high:3576kB active:336360kB inactive:40kB present:372812kB pages_scanned:540939 all_unreclaimable? yes May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325104] lowmem_reserve[]: 0 0 0 0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325116] DMA: 1*4kB 0*8kB 1*16kB 0*32kB 0*64kB 0*128kB 0*256kB 1*512kB 1*1024kB 0*2048kB 0*4096kB = 1556kB May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325148] Normal: 31*4kB 0*8kB 0*16kB 0*32kB 1*64kB 1*128kB 2*256kB 1*512kB 1*1024kB 0*2048kB 0*4096kB = 2364kB May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325184] Swap cache: add 0, delete 0, find 0/0, race 0+0 May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325192] Free swap = 0kB May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325200] Total swap = 0kB May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.325206] Free swap:0kB May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [ 8271.352327] 98032 pages of RAM May 3 19:12:15 yoda kernel: [

Jan, You want to get the samba 3.0.28a archive from http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/old-versions/samba-3.0.28a.tar.gz expand it into a temporary location, cd to the source folder and enter the command: ./configure --with-smbmount --sysconfdir=/etc/samba --with- lockdir=/var/cache/samba --with-piddir=/var/cache/samba/ --with- configdir=/etc/samba then enter make and all should be well. It's been reported here, but I can't find the bug number (I should be in bed, it's 2am my time...), but the upstream bug for it is here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530720 It should be rather high-priority that Ubuntu adopts either this patch or a similar one, and we really should push a version of it into 2.22 (one that doesn't add any UI elements or new strings). I'm not sure what's best for Ubuntu, but I would be for adopting the existing patch, since it's in trunk already, even if it means we'll have some more work to do translation-wise. -- making shortcut to home folder on desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/230600 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 224471] Re: Bizarre huge fonts in Firefox
Hi, I'm experiencing similar problems on my system. The problem seems to be with fonts that have their sizes specified in points (pt); fonts where the size is specified using px, em, or a percentage are fine. I suspect this issue is related to what Firefox thinks the current screen resolution is, which is uses to calculate how big a point is. Setting the config value layout.css.dpi to 96 using about:config fixes this issue, further pointing to some resolution info mismatch. However in my case xdpyinfo reports a resolution of 192x205 dpi... so that might be the underlying cause of the issues I'm having. I'm running under VMWare btw. [Bug 230614] [NEW] Using 3d windows causes an xorg crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Whenever 3d windows is activated, ANY application that draws a full window is open, and that window is not minimized (i.e. anytime there is a window for 3d windows to make 3-dimensional), any attempt to rotate the desktop cube, either through manual mouse rotation or through the to-a-workspace rotation, causes xorg to crash. I just upgraded CompizFusion, so this is the first time I've tried using 3d windows; I haven't seen it previously working on this video card family. I have this problem with the intel GM945 chip; on the forum here (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?p=57658#post57658) is a report of the same problem with the GMA950. To reproduce: 1. Activate 3d windows. 2. Open/keep open any application which draws a window that 3d windows would render in 3d. 3. Rotate the desktop cube. At the moment the key combination for cube rotation is pressed, xorg will crash and send me to a login screen; previous session is lost. I was redirected to here from CompizFusion, where the first response was probably a problem in the driver with one of the GL commands 3d windows uses. [Bug 230615] [NEW] Networking destroys ip adresses leaving computers out of networks
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdenetwork After a weeks frustrations and testing I have become convinced networking is fundementally broken in 8.04. I also believe it has multiple bugs in different places but am not knowledgeable enough to detect where. The system currently barely works for a single computer which can connect to internet with network manager. It connects wity pppoeeconf, but shows no IP adresses in network manager nor in systems settings-network. I have a office with switch/ADSL router which connects 4 computers. The router is also the network DHCP server. Any computer can connect individually to the internet, but has no IP or Lan identification which gets destroyed in the process. I removed network manager from all the computers and cleaned up the etc/network/interfaces file. Network manager did not see any interfaces although the computers were connected. After cleaning all the intefaces out of the interfaces file, the interfaces did show up in network manager, but the dsl was disconnected.( Bug 1 in network manager). It worked after I ran sudo pppoeconf on each computer again. However, this put the interfaces into a manual mode and destroyed any networking. After I removed Knetwork manager, reset and there was no connection. ( I have knemo installed so I can watch the interfaces). I went to system settings and configured the interfaces dhcp. This is where I found bug nr 2. (You have to reconfigure twice before it actually takes and shows a IP address). Most people would be discouraged right here as systems settings does not work properly). I had to reload the gateway and domain name in system settings in each case. Reloading disconnected the computers again and the only way I could get them back on the net was to run sudo pppoeconf again. This worked, but after switching off and back on, the computer connected but the IP, Gateway and and domain name was destroyed again. ( Bug nr 3). Soe 8.04 leaves us in a position where you can be connceted to the internet through ASDL ( pppoeconf) juggling, but the network can never work. Needs urgent attention in different places. [Bug 230600] Re: making shortcut to home folder on desktop
A little background: Honestly until 2 days ago it had been 6 years since I have used Linux, but I got SO SICK of Vista which came on my machine. This is the first bug so far that I have come in contact with while using Ububtu 8.0.4, which by the way is the best Linux release I have ever seen. Used to be a Redhat user. I am using Ubuntu on a Gateway MT6705 (~1 year old laptop) and it detected all hardware from the start. But yeah, it took me a minute but I found the trash folder. The trash folder has moved so many times. At one time it was in /usr, its been in /root i think, and now its hidden in the logged-in user's folder. Just open the Terminal and type: rm -rf /home/(username)/.local/share/Trash/files/ I found some files related to the problem in: .../Trash/info/ also, so I performed rm -rf on that folder also. It deletes the folders but the system creates them again as soon as you open the Trashcan. If nothing else, this can be considered a workaround until a patch comes out. Perhaps others can benefit from this information. -Andrew -- making shortcut to home folder on desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/230600 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229869] Re: initscripts rules confused ?
Hello Scott, it's not an invention of mines, and it's not crazy, as it's already implemented on other systems. or perhaps are crazy the developers in HP. I am not talking about Debian, where it's wrong, and they are going to partially correct this behavior (as you can see from that doc). On HP-UX the number of services goes up to 1000 (instead of the usual 100), and Sxxx + Kxxx = 1000 Furthermore, using 1000 instead of 100 is smarter, otherwise, service with same number are treated in alphabetically order, and I hope this is not what we want. On such machines you don't have tools to organize services, and the basic rule, also implemented by default on the system, is this one. This rule, just says: what is started first, will be killed last, and when you look at the services you understand cleanly how they are organized. This rule, works without exceptions and without problems If in some case, you don't need to stop a service, you put no operation for the stop instance, but the Kxx must be there. I'll try to put this one in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com as a request for a new implementation -- initscripts rules confused ? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229869 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK - I have examined things further and here is what I think happened. The second install worked becase by not changing the timezone and not looking for time update the system didn't try to search for a time server. [Bug 126330] Re: KMail: e-mail autocompletion from LDAP source doesn't work
I can confirm an improvement but not it being fixed: 1) The LDAP lookup in completion when having defined one in Contacts - Settings - Configure Address Book - LDAP Lookup seems to work buggy only: a) one need to restart kontact at least on enabling/disabling to make this change having an effect b) not all addresses are found on completion though using the Tools - Lookup Addresses in LDAP Directory does. I observed this already since a long time but always thought of being a problem in my LDAP settings. But with the search dialog finding now those addresses I miss in the completion and the search using the same connection settings as the completion, I'm now quite sure it is a problem in Kontact. c) Sometimes when enabling/disabling the LDAP connection specified in Tools - Lookup Addresses in LDAP Directory the list of address books is no longer drawn, the area becomes grey (having enabled address books listing in Settings - Show Extension - Address Books 2) The LDAP lookup in completion when having specified a LDAP addressbook only as shown with enabling Settings - Show Extension - Address Books (for reproducing this please note 1a!!!) still does not work at all.
