[Bug 204238] Re: compiz crashes randomly when using a Qt OpenGL Widget

2008-05-17 Thread Michael Wouters
I'm having what appears to be a Qt4+OpenGL+compiz problem too.
The Qt4 application is something I have written which uses
multiple OpenGL windows within a single widget,
sharing display lists. Typically
what happens is that the CPU goes 100% for a few seconds
when I do things with the OpenGL windows like minimize one
(so that the others have to resize etc)

When I turn off compiz everything is well-behaved.

I am using:

Linux pooter 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
/usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4.3.4
OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.12

[Bug 183463] Re: duplicate anniversary in calendar

2008-05-17 Thread mlissner
Agreed. Additionally, in the spouse field of the contacts, it should
autofill with names from your address book, like the TO: field does in
an email. That, or perhaps have a button that you can use to select
people from your address book.

[Bug 220504] Re: Firefox doesn't know what apps to use to open any type of downloaded files

2008-05-17 Thread Benjamin Walter
I guess I should clarify now that I re-read.

This is a bug because firefox is able to install without firefox-gnome-support
in the xubuntu 8.08 default install CD.

firefox-gnome-support should be a requirement to the xubuntu-desktop
meta package list.

Hope this makes things clear.

[Bug 231540] [NEW] Firefox Offline Mode in 3G (with VMC) (Hardy 8.04)

2008-05-17 Thread Karl Fischer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

If I connect with Vodafone Mobile Connect, Firefox launches in Offline Mode,

Back in the day ... it would have been something with gnome-firefox-

[Bug 229968] Re: Hard disk randomly "halts"

2008-05-17 Thread dashun
** Description changed:

  1. Upgraded to hardy and kernel 2.6.24-16 (previously kernel 2.6.22-17 I
think)
  2. Since then, hard disk randomly "halts" (behaviour alike that of before
suspending/standby). Doesn't seem to be linked to high cpu usage (which seems
to be higher now since policykit installed)
  3. Can move mouse for a while and type in terminal, but cannot execute
commands (e.g. ls) and start new processes
  4. Occurred ~20 times in past 2 weeks. Open files get corrupted; have to
restore from backup
  5. Upgraded to kernel 2.6.22-17-generic - about the same regularity of
"halting".
  6. Tried reducing resource usage by switching from KDE to openbox - about the
same regularity of "halting".
  7. Usually reboot by using alt+print screen and REISUB, which seems to result
in less chance corruption. But on reboot, disk is not detected (powered?) on
startup. Have to "power cycle" computer to get disk back. Seems to be similar
to bug #174185 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/174185)
  8. *Once*, whilst doing step 7, saw a screen with the following error looping:

end request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 13076682
  sd 0:0:0:0 [sda] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK,
SUGGEST_OK

- 9. Nothing unusual in /var/log/syslog, a couple of logs attached in logs.tgz
+ 9. Nothing unusual/recorded in /var/log/syslog, a couple of logs attached in
logs.tgz
  10. This never happened when I was using gutsy or feisty
+ 11. When in MS Windows XP (dual boot), this behaviour doesn't occur.

  Thanks.

[Bug 231539] [NEW] Ubuntu Hardy - Hard shutdowns / poweroff 2.6.24-16-generic

2008-05-17 Thread Scruffynerf
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) with Linux kernel 2.6.24-16-generic. When shutting down
(Quit - Shutdown). On selecting, 1 of two things occur:
a) Network Manager reports connection errors, the usplash briefly appears, then
immediate loss of power.
b) Shutdown usplash occurs, works normally for 10-15 seconds, them immediate
loss of power.

Once power is off, I can hear hard drives and fans self-spinning down.

Have tried adding "acpi=force noapic" to boot profile, however that does
not appear to help.

Hardware Specs (Desktop)
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ (@ 2Ghz)
Mobo: MSI K8T Neo K8T800 (VIA 8xxx chipsets)
Video: GeForce 6600 GT, 256 MB, 300 MHz (Running Nvidia 169.xx drivers)
Ethernet: RealTek RTL-8169 rev 10
Hard Drives: 1 WD 120gb (system), 1 Seagate 320gb (Storage) (Both ATA)
Optical Drives: 1 Pioneer DVR-108, 1 Pioneer DVR-112
Standard Floppy drive

I've attached the outputs as requested from the power management
debugging readme, however the system will not let me tarball the ACPI
directory.

[Bug 212364] Re: Alt Gr key doesn't work in Netbeans

2008-05-17 Thread Carlos Hoyos
It seems I got the culcript. It's the SCIM input editor.

People at aMSN forums have found a quick fix to the problem.
Instructions can be found here:

http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=23368#23368

Basically, SCIM doesn't work on java and Tcl/Tk applications if you
don't define certain global variables before launching the daemon.

Problem fixed for me. Hope it works for others.

[Bug 231491] Re: Create packages for nagios3-*

2008-05-17 Thread Roger Ward
I copied the Debian source and Ubuntu nagios2 changes, and made a ppa
package that built correctly and functions on my system.

It can be downloaded from the following apt source:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rogerw/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/rogerw/ubuntu hardy main

I most likely didn't correctly setup something, so please provide any
feedback. I have packaged a few files for debian in the past, but there
seem to be different ways of handling uploads... I will submit this to
the MOTU tomorrow when my account is active.

Thanks,

[Bug 207127] Re: fn key doesn't work in hardy with macbook pro fourth generation (4, 1)

2008-05-17 Thread Alex Karpenko
I've detailed a proper fix that doesn't require patching/kernel recompile/or
the compiled module I've provided above.
The fix is found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4984452&posted=1#post4984452

The fix loads the usbhid module with an option that adds the new DeviceID to
the quirk list dynamically.
Sorry to spam this bug report. I'll move further discussion there.

The patch I outlined above should still be implemented so that in future
the keyboard is recognized automatically.

[Bug 231533] [NEW] Shutdown bug on Toshiba Satellite A45 on Hardy

2008-05-17 Thread grommithockey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

This problem happens about 50 percent of the time on my Toshiba
Satellite A45. This problem started after I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04
Hardy. I never saw this problem with Gutsy.

When pressing the Shut Down button to power off the computer, normally,
the screen will go blank for a short time (few seconds), then I will get
the Ubuntu progress bar screen that shows progress made until shut down.
When the bug happens, I will get to the blank screen, but then never to
the progress screen. Eventually, I have to use the power button to shut
the computer completely off. If I get to the progress bar screen, I know
shut down will happen properly.

[Bug 212364] Re: Alt Gr key doesn't work in Netbeans

2008-05-17 Thread Carlos Hoyos
I can testify this bug exists. The Alt Gr key appears as "Undefined"
when testing new shortcuts on Editor Preferences. Also, because the only
way to write brackets ({} []) in a spanish keyboard is by using a Alt Gr
key combination, Netbeans becomes almost totally useless (you can still
copy+paste from other applications).

[Bug 126140] Re: snd_hda_intel fails to unload (or unload correctly) on shut down; laptop fails to halt

2008-05-17 Thread Matt Austin
Still occurs using 2.6.24-16-generic on my EeePC (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS).
Adding "modprobe -r snd-hda-intel" to /etc/init.d/halt is the workaround
I have been using.

[Bug 160098] Re: Volume Meter not functioning from apps list

2008-05-17 Thread Ben
I don't understand -QUOTE "open, Audio Manager,".
This problem is the same for me in Hardy. I'd like a visual confirmation
sometimes when I adjust my hifi - the knobs have some dust problems and I'd
like to be able to get visual feedback to help troubleshooting. i.e. visually
confirm output when I adjust balance on the hifi.

I cannot find a program called Audio Manager.

[Bug 231532] [NEW] WINE listed as "Wine Windows Emulator"

2008-05-17 Thread Matt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

WINE's entry in the Add/Remove Programs List lists WINE as "Wine Windows
Emulator." This is incorrect: WINE is a compatibility layer, not an
emulator. In fact, the acronym "WINE" stands for "WINE Is Not an
Emulator." This listing should be changed to "Wine Windows
Compatibility Layer" or "Wine Compatibility Layer."

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-05-17 Thread Gate
This is happening to me on Hardy with 2.6.24-16 when copying large numbers of
files.

Weird thing is that Compiz remains perfectly responsive (desktop switching)
but every other application including Firefox and and the terminal emulator
continue to remain unresponsive for me minutes to *hours* after the disk I/O
has finished (copying a few thousand files from USB to HDD using cp).

This happens despite processor and RAM usage both staying under 40%.

[Bug 223920] Re: xserver-xorg-video-vesa driver does not support 1024x768 on VIA Chrome9 HC IGP

2008-05-17 Thread Hendy Irawan
Too bad, I already gave the VIA-based laptop to somebody else (gave me
too many problems with Ubuntu) and got another one with an Intel chipset
(that worked flawlessly, BTW).

I guess I'm not that patient enough to fiddle a laptop to make it
working. ;)

this might not be fixed --

when I first boot, I have .gvfs file in my home directory.

if I try to load audio data into Audacity, it fails halfway through and
the .gvfs file disappears. All programs that depend on the link fail
(so far, Audacity and Brasero).

[Bug 231527] [NEW] Pressing CTRL is unrecognized in Wine when "Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed" is turned on

2008-05-17 Thread roman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

When the "Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed" Wine
doesn't respond to presses of the CTRL key most of the time. The little
notifier that circles the mouse shows up, but the problem will not
respond as it should. I would know, because I wrote the program.

Ubuntu version 8.04 (though I noticed the problem since as far back as
I've been using Ubuntu, which is 7.04), and most every Wine version,
including the newest one on Wine's website which is wine-1.0-rc1.

The fix I've found is to turn off the feature (in System --> Preferences
--> Mouse) under "Locate Pointer" and it will work as expected, but with
that feature on it will not.

Description:Ubuntu 8.04

Symptoms: The terminal went wacky outputting garbage, as though it

Duplication: As far as the terminal outputting garbage their was some

$ sudo head -n 6993 apt-term.log
if i "-n 6992" it wont happen but any thing after the 6993rd line of this log

matter what option i picked it would pop backup and ask again. The

[Bug 220504] Re: Firefox doesn't know what apps to use to open any type of downloaded files

2008-05-17 Thread Benjamin Walter
Hi!

I had this exact same problem, xubuntu 8.08.

firefox-gnome-support is a fix!

But this is still a bug because firefox-gnome-support is missing from
the xubuntu-desktop & install CD.

[Bug 221304] Re: EnvyNG installs Ubuntu's lrm but it should install its own packages

2008-05-17 Thread Bob Kline
Alberto:

I tested the new version with the GeForce 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i as
you requested, and the behavior is still the same as described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/envy/+bug/224004/comments/2 (using envyng to
install the driver leaves the display in 800x600 resolution, even though
if I run nVidia's installer directly the installed driver works
correctly and I get the 1280x1024 resolution back again). I have to re-
run the nVidia installer again periodically to keep up with Ubuntu
kernel upgrades, so it would be nice to have the machine brought back
into the Ubuntu/envy fold at some point.

[Bug 127280] Re: usplash shutdown screen corrupt post nvidia restricted drivers installation

2008-05-17 Thread Santiago
I have a similar issue. I have a Compaq Presario F730 running with
Athlon X2 64-bit with nVidia 6100 graphics, those that need the
restricted drivers to run compiz fusion and stuff. When i installed a
fresh copy of Ubuntu Hardy (64 bit version) the boot and shutdown
usplash were fine. I remember that when i installed restricted drivers
for nVidia cards, the "newer", the boot splash was fine, but the
shutdown were missing. Instead of it, i got horizontal random lines
changing fast, it freaked me out because i thought there was something
really wrong with the shutdown. But the machine turned off as expected
and i kept cool. The thing is that it is sort of disturbing having all
that lines changing fast and randomly. I also changed the boot splash to
none, and enabled the verbose mode for booting. It works for booting,
like debian etch, but still can't see the text in shuting down... so i
think that is some trouble with nNidia drivers and i don't know how much
can be done since the drivers are restricted.

That's debatable. As in the original case I reported, I wanted to switch
to a tab a couple right of the one I was currently on - and it stopped
on one of the intervening tabs because it happened to contain a text

I2P or Invisible Internet Protocol. An anonymous P2P network, exposing a
simple layer that applications can use to anonymously and securely send
messages to each other. The network itself is strictly message based
(ala IP), but there is a library available to allow reliable streaming
communication on top of it (ala TCP). All communication is end to end

In short, the problem:
Connection speed set by the nm-applet is always 1 Mb/s (when it should be 54

[Bug 34501] Re: touchpad lockup/drag

2008-05-17 Thread John Pye
Workaround this problem by changing the file /boot/grub/menu.lst to add
'i8042.nomux' as follows:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic
root=UUID=44b532a5-2527-4641-a7af-9d553d430715 ro quiet splash
i8042.nomux

This is the same fix as noted by Alex above.

[Bug 231519] [NEW] pixeleted video playback upon fullscreen

2008-05-17 Thread spandanj
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on a dell inspiron 6400 dual core, with ATI
mobility radeon x1400.

Compiz works fine. However, video playback of any video when run full
screen is Pixelated in vlc. normal playback in a window at 1X zoom is
fine. If you would like more information about my configuration, please
let me know, and how. all packages used are from ubuntu repos. and ati
driver is from restricted modules. I have xserver-xorg xgl uninstalled.

I expect the playback to be SMOOTH and clear like in windows. Atleast in
gutsy it was not pixelated, though it was choppy with sync problems and
screen tearing.

[Bug 222963] Re: rt61pci fails to locate wireless networks

2008-05-17 Thread Barrakketh
If you look in the README file in the Module directory for Ralink's
drivers they give instructions on how to configure it using the
rt61sta.dat file. You'll be particularly interested in the AuthMode and
EncrypType entries, though you need to fill out the other relevant
sections (WPA key, SSID, etc).

As for the link not ready error, I noticed something strange. While the
compat-wireless drivers were working fine, I started getting the same
error again after a power outage made me reboot my PC. If I blacklist
the driver(s) (rt61 if you have it installed and rt61pci), reboot so the
driver isn't loaded, comment out the rt61pci entry in the blacklist and
insert the driver I connect without a problem. I guess the reason why
it worked fine the first time I tried it was because I already had the
rt61pci driver blacklisted so I could use the rt61 legacy driver, and
since I uninstalled the legacy driver my system was "clean". I'm still
not sure why the driver doesn't work if it loads at boot time, though...

As for the debug configs, it doesn't create any extra error messages.
If you have a debugfs mounted somewhere (I added an fstab entry to mount
it at /sys/kernel/debug) there is extra debug information the driver
makes available, the most notable of which are the card's registers.
IvD has an updated script that dumps the registers on the rt2x00 forums
at http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4660

[Bug 231518] [NEW] System halts when invoking firefox

2008-05-17 Thread dafu
Public bug reported:

When I invoke Firefox, the workload of Ubuntu is going higher and
higher. The workload is around 7.xx or more from system monitor. And
then system halts. (I mean no response to any command, such as poweroff)
Before the system's halt, I still can't see the Firefox window.

I downloaded some plugins of Firefox: such as noscript, download-bar
etc.

I tried to clean ~/.mozilla folder and reinstall firefox. But it didn't
change anything. :-(

The problem can be reproduced every time when Firefox is invoked.

My desktop:
CPU 1.7GHz RAM 384M.
OS: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Firefox 3-beta5

[Bug 69085] Re: System Settings changes configuration files .fonts.conf and .fonts/ even without me applying any changes

2008-05-17 Thread PJSingh5000
I am experiencing this problem in Hardy. The systemsettings | Appearance
option creates a local ~/.fonts.conf file. The settings in this file do not
correspond to the options I select when I execute:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config --force
   Select:
Font tuning method for screen: Autohinter
Enable subpixel rendering for screen: Automatic
Enable bitmapped fonts by default? No
As a result the fonts revert to a fuzzy appearance. To correct this, I have to
manually delete the local ~/.fonts.conf each time I access the Appearance
option from systemsettings.

[Bug 220734] Re: Wireless for iwl3945 still broken

2008-05-17 Thread saniac
I am sorry to report that this problem has gone away for me, but I'm not
sure what I did to fix it.

I did two things which might have made a difference:
- changed my router's configuration to use WPA and TKIP rather than WPA2 and AES
- took the interface out of "roaming mode" using nmapplet's "manual
configuration" option

My hypothesis is that immediately after Hardy upgrade, there was a
problem with iwl3945. In trying to resolve it I used nmapplet's "manual
configuration" option to take the interface out of roaming mode and
explicitly specify what options to use. In a subsequent upgrade, I got
the new backports package, but because I was still using manual
configuration, it didn't work?

If I can think of a way to replicate this issue properly, I'll post it
here.

I've stopped using it due to this bug. That was in 7.10, I haven't retried

free for it to consume) in less than 8 hours.
