Using pasuspender works for me -- if a PulseAudio application is already
playing (eg Totem or Rhythmbox), then it stops while Audacity is running
and automatically starts again when Audacity ends. Great.
However, it does not solve the problem of bug 202791 or 231651, in which
Audacity cannot open

libc6-dev is in build-essential, so no buildd will ever be without it.
That said, Steve's suggestion still looks pretty darned hideous to me,
and it's likely better either for Ubuntu to just be carrying a small
build-dep diff for now, or for us to evaluate the value of moving
dietlibc to main.

OpenOffice Impress 2.4.1 in Hardy loses images.
I noticed that about one images per day disappears from my presentation in odp.
There are about 50 images embedded into the presentation - half of them png,
the other half jpeg.

I managed to solve the problem using a dirty workaround: I just replaced
the defective nautilus.mo file in my /usr/share/locale-
langpack/eu/LC_MESSAGES folder with the old version used in Ubuntu
Gutsy.
In my case (Basque locale), I got the old package here:

I followed your directions again. After disabling desktop-effects,
reconfiguring xserver-xorg AND rebooting with only the internal LCD
display, I could see a bare desktop with the default settings and
