Re: [Bug 288478] Re: Ownership of /etc/sasl2db precludes direct access by Cyrus IMAP

2008-10-24 Thread cwsupport
Hi,

Im not sure that will help as the permissions of the installed sasldb
are root.root with no acl on it.

Perhaps the issue is two-fold, the cyrus-common-2.2 install (which I
think creates the user) should include the sasl group permission for the
cyrus user, and cyrus-sasl2 should correct the group access on the
/etc/sasldb2 file to be root.sasl ?

Is it expected that all access will go through saslauthd? I used to run
this but changed to having the imap service access the sasldb directly
which saves memory etc as there is no need for me to run the saslauthd
service at all.

Or does this come under one of those cross-package configuration issues
that are basically resolved by hand?

Cheers,
Barry

[Bug 288226] Re: DRBD 8.0.11 is unusably slow

2008-10-24 Thread Florian Hackenberger
Would someone be willing to undergo this process if I provide the 8.0.13
source package (for the drbd8-utils package)? The source in the kernel
would have to be patched by someone else.

Citing from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates this upgrade would be
justified:
Bugs will be considered if they (1) have an obviously safe patch and (2)
affect an application

However, we cannot backport from Intrepid, as 8.2.6 is a version upgrade
which involves a lot of new features and is not even considered stable.

[Bug 288616] [NEW] Tomcat 6 fails to start during install

2008-10-24 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

In some cases Tomcat 6 fails to successfully start *during install*.
This doesn't prevent the installation from succeeding and you can still
run sudo service tomcat6 start to start it once it is installed.

If a JRE is not completely configured by the time Tomcat is started,
Tomcat will fail to start. This can happen in some installation
scenarios as Tomcat 6 doesn't formally pre-depend on a JRE.

For example, on a minimal system, the packages seem to be configured in that
order (some lines removed for clarity):
$ sudo apt-get install tomcat6 tomcat6-examples tomcat6-admin tomcat6-user
Setting up default-jre-headless (1.6-30ubuntu3) ...
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-lib (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...
Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.18-0ubuntu3) ...
 * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 ...fail!
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...

However if you run:
$ sudo apt-get install tomcat6
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-lib (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...
Setting up default-jre-headless (1.6-30ubuntu3) ...
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...
Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.18-0ubuntu3) ...
 * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 [OK]

I tested the fix posted on 2008-09-08 but I didn't test the proposed fix
as the system went live (we manually installed the .deb from 8.10 which

a VM or similar

as regards to pastebin cleaning up entries - anyone know a good pastebin
system I can download which doesn't erase entries with the expiry time
set to never? :(

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-10-24 Thread Thierry Carrez
I'm not sure dhcdbd is affected because stopping it doesn't seem to
bring down DHCP connections (at least not immediately).

So the solution to this bug could be to move S15wpa-ifupdown to S36wpa-
ifupdown in wpasupplicant.

Could the people affected by this bug confirm that running the following
commands fixes the issue without bringing in more problems than it solves :
$ sudo mv /etc/rc0.d/S15wpa-ifupdown /etc/rc0.d/S36wpa-ifupdown
$ sudo mv /etc/rc6.d/S15wpa-ifupdown /etc/rc6.d/S36wpa-ifupdown
(please keep umountnfs.sh at S31, where it belongs)

[Bug 288478] Re: Ownership of /etc/sasl2db precludes direct access by Cyrus IMAP

2008-10-24 Thread Scott Kitterman
OK. Confirmed. All the boxes I have were upgraded from Hardy. If I
remove /etc/sasldb2 and recreate it in Intrepid it's root:root. If I do
it on a Hardy box it's root:sasl.

** Summary changed:

- Ownership of /etc/sasl2db precludes direct access by Cyrus IMAP
+ Ownership of /etc/sasl2db is root:root instead of root:sasl

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: sasl2-bin

  Ubuntu: 8.04.1
  Version: 2.1.22.dfsg1-18ubuntu2

The Cyrus IMAP server runs as the user cyrus. But the /etc/sasl2db does
not provide sufficient permissions for direct access by the IMAP server.
saslauthd has no problems as it runs as root.

- Fix: chown cyrus.sasl /etc/sasl2db
+ This file needs to be in the sasl group so that uses of the DB can
+ access it. This will also break Postfix's use of cyrus-sasl2 for SMTP
+ Auth.

Hi,

The cyrus user *is* in the sasl group. However the permissions on
/etc/sasldb2 are root.root.
I believe this should either be cryus.sasl or as a minimum root.sasl

[Bug 288478] Re: Ownership of /etc/sasl2db is root:root instead of root:sasl

2008-10-24 Thread Scott Kitterman
Proposed release note:

Cyrus SASL creates the database for its sasldb2 plugin with incorrect
permissions. As a result, other users of this database, such as cyrus-
imap, will not be able to access it and will fail. This does not affect
upgrades of existing databases from a previous release. The work-around
is to manually change the group of /etc/sasldb2 to sasl:

$ sudo chgrp sasl /etc/sasldb2

[Bug 114505] Re: ntp brought up before network is ready; fails not resolve any ip or host names; ntp does not recover

2008-10-24 Thread Onno Benschop
The machines that you are having issues with, were they fresh hardy
installs, upgrades, or a mixture?

How are their network interfaces managed?

Are they running Ubuntu, or Ubuntu-server?

In re-reading this bug-report, I can see there are many issues that
appear to affect this bug and the NTP server restarting several times
during boot appears to be related to the several ways in which it's
started.

While not ideal by any stretch of the imagination, the aim was to get to
a point after boot at which time ntpdate had succesfully run and NTP -
if installed - was running.

From your report, this does not appear to be the case.

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-10-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I tested the commands, Thierry, and there was no difference. I didn't
really hold out a lot of hope, though, because I don't run the WPA
supplicant. Everything works perfectly when I umount the CIFS
filesystems before shutting down. I also found that Suspend and
Hibernate modes work better too (as an aside).

Strange, umountnfs.sh (I double checked it for cifs) runs before
networking so of course one would have to think everything would be
okay. Does the logging off of the Gnome session, ending the Network
Manager in the notification area, have something to do with it? I
wonder what would happen if the networking was all static
startup/shudown entries and network manager was never run (or even
uninstalled).

Re: [Bug 114505] Re: ntp brought up before network is ready; fails not resolve any ip or host names; ntp does not recover

2008-10-24 Thread cwsupport
Hi,

All fresh installs. ntp installed POST installation via apt-get.
Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 Kubuntu Desktop 8.04.1 KDE4 Remix.
Mixture of DHCP and static IP.
 - As an example the desktop I am email from had 4 network interfaces. 2
static IP and 2 DHCP all specified under /etc/network/interfaces. 2
static both cabled, gateway specified on one of them. 2 marked as DHCP
not connected. Only eth0 and eth1 marked as auto. This typical of 5
server installs and 3 desktop installs which are all have this issue.

The machine it *does* work is a laptop with eth0 (DHCP not connected)
and ath0 (WPA wireless managed by knetworkmanager). This seems to always
come up OK. But that is probably because the wireless network comes up
under ifup post-login and the ifup scripts are probably doing their job.
I cannot remember if it works properly under a cabled eth0 with DHCP as
I always use the wireless on the laptop.

Hope this helps,
Barry

[Bug 288623] [NEW] ubuntu-restricted-extras contains java 6, not java 5

2008-10-24 Thread Alessio Treglia

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

In internet#web-browsing [1] there's the following description:

The following plugins and codecs are installed by the Ubuntu restricted extras
package:
* flashplugin-nonfree
* gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
* gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
* msttcorefonts
* sun-java5-jre
* sun-java5-plugin

This isn't correct: on Intrepid, ubuntu-restricted-extras doesn't
provide java 5 packages, it recommends sun-java6-jre and sun-
java6-plugin instead.

$ sudo apt-get install tomcat6 tomcat6-examples tomcat6-admin tomcat6-user
Setting up default-jre-headless (1.6-30ubuntu3) ...
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-lib (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...
Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.18-0ubuntu3) ...
 * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 ...fail!
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...

However if you run:
$ sudo apt-get install tomcat6
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-lib (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...
Setting up default-jre-headless (1.6-30ubuntu3) ...
Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b12-0ubuntu4) ...

hangs.

Install (with quiet splash removed from boot options) displays
Starting Ubiquity; then blank/black screen; then nothing. Gave it 10
minutes just in case!

I'm trying to install on a Sony Vaio PCG-K215Z (which has an ATI Radeon
9200 graphics card).

Fiesty was the last release that ran out of the box.
I got Gutsy working by installing an older driver.
Hardy had pretty much the same issues as Intrepid.

[Bug 288613] [NEW] Intrepid: RC Regression. Bluetooth no longer pairs correctly which it did in beta

2008-10-24 Thread davmor2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

RELEASE: Intrepid
CD/DVD VARIANT: Ubuntu Desktop 32/64 bit cd
ISO BUILD: 20081022

SYMPTOMS: In beta I could pair my phone to my pc with no issues.
However now in RC I cannot. I have added the bluez-compat package
incase it was anything to do with that and still no pairing. Also
rather than taking a couple of seconds to locate my phone it is taking
1-3 minutes. This is a major step backwards.

CAUSE: Unknown

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1/ make your phone visible
2/ insert your bluetooth dongle
3/ click on the bluetooth icon
4/ click on setup device and watch as the first 3-4 time it fails to detect
your device
5/ final device discovered pairing failed

[Bug 288609] [NEW] [intrepid] Firefox should never ask the proxy password more than once after an upgrade

2008-10-24 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Firefox already ask for the proxy password for each tab that requires
it, see bug #195698

But also, Firefox should not ask more than once for the proxy password
after an upgrade.

After upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid, behind a proxy with password, it tooks
me 5 minutes and approximately 50 password to re-launch firefox ! This is
unacceptable and clearly make it nearly unusable (as after a few passwords, all

[Bug 287551] Re: 8.04 - 8.10 removes language-pack-en-base / language-pack-fi-base during cleanup

The removal happens because the dependencies in language-support-fi
changed from recommending language-pack-fi to suggesting language-
pack-fi. This makes the apt thinks its a automatic installed package
that is no longer needed.

Sorry for all the posts.

So the problem is still there and the patch does need to be applied. BUT
there is a new profile for network manager called Auto Mobile Broadband

problem is skipped.

Patch still needs to be applied. But this is a nice work around if your

[Bug 268692] Re: [intrepid] Please update kadu to version 0.6.0.2

2008-10-24 Thread Patryk Cisek
Hi,

I'm a maintainer of Kadu in Debian and upstream author of some of Kadu's
plugins. 0.6.0 is a stable and frozen branch of Kadu, which means no new
features get there, only bugfixes are allowed.

As for my job on Kadu: one of the plugins in 0.6.0.1, which I wrote , namely
miastoplusa_sms, is completely unusable when linked with libcurl3-gnutls (works
fine with libcurl3-openssl, though, but can't be linked with it due to GPL --
OpenSSL license incompatibility). I fixed it in 0.6.0.2-2 in Debian by forcing
SSLv3 mode, namely:
curl_easy_setopt(curl, CURLOPT_SSLVERSION, CURL_SSLVERSION_SSLv3);

It Kadu won't get synced, this plugin will not be functional at all
(because of a problem with libcurl linked with gnutls).

is
 the only one using debconf.
   - Replace deprecated ${Source-Version} with ${source:Version} for
dependency and with ${build:Version} for = ones.
   - Remove versioned dependency of Build-Depends patchutils and cdbs,
because etch has newer versions then the one used.
   - Remove dpkg-dev completely from Build-Depends because it's
build-essentail and a non versioned dependency results in a lintian
error.
   - Remove Conflict/Replaces pupa, it has been removed from Debian 2004.
   - Change build-dependency of unifont-bin to unifont (= 1:5.1.20080820),
it's the new package containing unifont.hex and that version to avoid
 licensing problems (Closes: #496061)

in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you?
I replaced the ATI card with Nvidia some time back so no longer have
the hardware.

[Bug 288628] [NEW] epiphany renders webpages using wrong colors when using a dark theme

2008-10-24 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Hi guys, I'm using a modified version of NewHuman theme, with a dark
color for input boxes and windows, and a light color for text. The
problem is that epiphany sometimes render these colors as part of
webpages, when it shouldn't use them.

Pictures:
1) Note the text color (this doesn't happen on firefox, text should be black)
http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/7182/55450030hr8.png

2) Note the background color (again, this doesn't happen on firefox, background
shouldn't be brown)

[Bug 288627] [NEW] cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network

2008-10-24 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

I have to connect to the network using a netgear access point which is
likely be using default settings. The network is non-password protected
and called NETGEAR. I am using iwl3945. The network works fine from my
laptop under windows: I see it when I scan for networks, and I connect
to it immediately. Under ubuntu, both hardy and intrepid, I just can't
see the network. Repeated attempts to iwlist scan result in seeing
sometimes a network called something like C.G.NETGEAR which is password
protected. Please help me report as much information as possible: using
windows makes me feel like being trapped.

[Bug 288626] [NEW] Failed to Initiate NVIDIA graphics device on Intrepid Ibex

2008-10-24 Thread kahrytan
Public bug reported:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

When I have my TV tuner (HVR-1600) installed, I get the error above.
When I remove it, I don't get the error above. It could be related to
bug #238191 since both errors offer a conflict between Nvidia and tv
tuner card.

Can not provide more information due to removal of Intrepid and reinstall of
Hardy. I consider Intrepid unusable until this bug is fixed.

[Bug 268502] Re: Bluetooth association no longer works

2008-10-24 Thread _oOMOo_
I have been able to pair (intermittently) from phone to computer using a
different phone, an LG rather than a Sony Ericsson. The LG allows me to
enter the passcode much more quickly than the Sony (which normally
thinks for about 25 seconds before asking me to choose a passcode). Is
this a timeout issue?

Having said that, even when paired I am still unable to browse files on
the LG.

[Bug 223995] Re: Mouse pointer/cursor distorted when Visual Effects are enabled

2008-10-24 Thread Tom Boshoven
Right now the visual artifacts still exist.
My guess is that the ATI drivers are the problem.
I can't give you any outputs right now, because I'm not in Ubuntu, but I'll try
to remember doing so.

I tried installing the latest ATI drivers before, but that did not help.
I will try updating again, but later.

[Bug 288631] [NEW] Fn keyboard shortcuts don't work on Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 2727

2008-10-24 Thread ubuntukungfu
Public bug reported:

the Fn special keys to control brightness and, crucially, wifi on/off
don't work on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 2727. This is a budget notebook
computer.

This is a show-stopper because it means the Li 2727 is unable to go
online. On each boot-up, the wifi must be manually turned on using Fn+F1
(even in Windows). There is no way to permanently turn it on in the
BIOS. FWIW this is a serious hardware issue that's a source of annoyance
for all Li 2727 users but there's no sign of a fix from Fujitsu Siemens.

Brightness can be controlled using the relevant Gnome applet. But one
useful feature, of switching the fan to quiet mode, is also
inaccessible. This is one reason why I bought this notebook.

A fix for the wifi problem can be found here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=644899

... but it's very outdated and doesn't appear to work any longer on
Ubuntu 8.10 (at least I couldn't get it to work although I skipped the
requirement to compile a new madwifi module).

[Bug 280931] Re: Tray retracts automatically after eject with 2.6.27-6 and -7

I filed a separate bug relating to issues with inserting a cd into the

not sure if there is a common element ?
