[Bug 293755] Re: [intrepid] network manager has startup race

2008-11-17 Thread Stephan Trebels
This appears to be in upstart, not network manager. Somehow the rc2
symlinks are started twice, at least I see atd complaining about being
started twice as well. Only NetworkManager really fails if being
started while running. I suspect that some of the underlying
infrastructure like dbus does not handle this gracefully and then nm-
applet connects to a different dbus than the running NetworkManager.
This also explains, why a restart of NetworkManager resolves the issue.

[Bug 299360] [NEW] No automatic package update notifications since Intrepid upgrade

2008-11-17 Thread Thilo-Alexander Ginkel
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading my Kubuntu installation from 8.04 to 8.10 I no longer
receive any automatic notification for pending package updates (such as
security updates). Manually running 'apt-get update', however,
immediately brings up the notification icon in the systray, so the
generic notification mechanism seems to work, but apparently the
automatic polling for new updates does not.

In Adept's "Software Sources" section automatic update checking is
configured to run once a day and only notify about pending updates.

Any idea?

Please let me know if you need any additional details.

Hi!

The bug happened again. Pasting a space from any webpage works fine but the space from my keyboard does not.

My keyboard is the keyboard for a Dell Inspiron 640m laptop, currently configured in Canadian Multilingual.

I also noticed that when switching between keyboard profiles, the space
starts to work again.

[Bug 204988] Re: gscan2pdf generates blank pages in the .pdf output

2008-11-17 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
> The scan looks all right, but saves as a blank page whatever option I
chose for compression.

In the --debug output, you scan a page, but do not save a PDF.

Excuse me if I am stating the obvious, but you realise that there are
two set of options on the save dialog, firstly the file type - i.e. PNG,
JPG, PDF, DjVu, etc., and if you select PDF, then you can select the
compression type, i.e. LZW, PNG, JPG, etc.

> The only way I seem to be able to save output is to save the session,
> then go into the gzip file and extract a .pnm file. That can then be saved as
> png.

You should be able to save any page as PNG, JPG, TIFF etc. Does this not
work?

> The other weird thing is that when I use the save command, the programme

> and a new pdf file is created on my machine - only it is just blank - but

This indicates that not all the pages have been marked as saved. Note
that you can either save the selected pages or all pages.

[Bug 205374] Re: r8169 Driver not stable with Realtek 8111C

2008-11-17 Thread mattthemuppet
I've had the same problem with 8.10 (both LiveCD and dual boot with
WinXP) on a Gigabyte GA-MA74G-S2H motherboard with 8111C chip. After
running lshw -C Network, it says Eth0 is disabled. Even after enabling
Eth0 (not quite sure how, tried ~3 pages of commands!), removing Network
Manager and editing the Interfaces file to Auto Eth0 and Auto inet Eth0
(I think, off the top of my head), still can't connect to the internet.
DHCP, IP and MAC addresses assigned fine - doing it manually makes no
difference. Yet to try the most recent Realtek Linux driver though.

upgrade on 7.1. My system hung for hours during the installation with the

[Bug 241973] Re: Use oga (Ogg Vorbis, audio) as the default extension extension for adding music to collection

2008-11-17 Thread Hew McLachlan
That would be classed as a bug with your hardware, perhaps a firmware
update is required. The ogg standard now primarily uses .oga for audio,
and .ogg is kept only for backwards compatibility, see
http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/MIME_Types_and_File_Extensions . I too
have a hardware player that recognises .ogg and not .oga, so I keep my
files as .ogg as well (for now).

I believe it's more important to adhere to the standards rather than
keep using .ogg indefinitely, just to keep some hardware players happy.
I suspect only a fraction of users with .oga files will have .ogg
hardware players, and those that do would probably be aware why an .oga
file doesn't work.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-11-17 Thread Balaji
Sorry, This is working perfectly fine. I cleaned everything and
installed only the linux-image-2.6.27-8 and Cheese works like a dream.
Thanks a lot Stefan. This must go into the next version for at least
fixing the problems with Cheese.

However, I am still worried. There is a kernel panic that occured on the
last kernel after about 20-25 minutes of start up. Something was broken.
This was for laptops using the Intel 3294 wireless card. I had to
install some specific package from the backports (linux-backports-
modules-intrepid) . I forgot the bug number, but it is on Launchpad for
sure. If this kernel also shows some wierd stuff I will report here. If
not, I wish it is released soon.

Thanks,
Balaji

[Bug 267241] Re: [intrepid] X11: no device detected

Hey,

I've had the same problem on two of my PCs.. one of which had two
cards (Radeon X1950XTX and Radeon X1950 Crossfire series) and the other
is only a single card (Radeon HD2600).. In both situations I had to
revert to tty1 (ctrl+alt+f1) then install xorg-driver-flgrx and run
"aticonfig --adapter=all --initialize", then restart gdm. This worked
greatly. I even was able to use compiz and it went smoothly.

If you need any information i'll be glad to provide them.

Thank you

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-11-17 Thread Balaji
Stefan,

I had a similar problem with cheese and I was unable to record video
although my webcam takes photos and also works with Skype flawlessly. So
when I wrote to Filippo and Daniel Seigel (Cheese developers) they
directed me to this bug report.

I installed the following packages: linux-image-2.6.27-8, kernel-image-2.6.27-8
and kernel-image-2.6.27-8-generic. When I boot up with the new kernel, I
immediately have a kernel panic. If you can tell me how I can save the output
on the screen anywhere I'll do that, but from what I see, the CAPS lock simply
blinks repeatedly and nothing works. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am forced to only
power off the system. It says something like "couldn't mount the file system".
So I tried to install fs-core-modules-2.6.27-8-generic. This does not install
complaining that it cannot overwrite the kernel object file and hence crashes.
If I try to report the crash, crash reporter says that "It is not a genuine
Ubuntu version"!!??

So the solution (kernel) proposed is not helping me. I guess this kernel
package should not go into the
next version of the kernel - unless I made some mistake and I have to install
some other packages.

What next? How do we fix the problem with cheese not recording properly?

I can attach, lspci -vvn, and any other log files you ask for. Please
refer http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=560983 to see the bug
report of the problem with Cheese for further input on what is happening
with gstreamer.

I have no /var/run/grub/ (which might explain the error?). A search
for file by that name returns no result (and the locate database is
updated daily).

$ locate ucf-new
$

I've attached the one menu.lst file that I found in /var and a backup
I made just before the upgrade. Hopefully that'll help.

/var/lib/ucf/cache/:var:run:grub:menu.lst
/boot/grub/menu.lst.bak

Thanks for helping make ubuntu (even) better!

[Bug 299344] [NEW] grub2 doesn't give/have version info.

2008-11-17 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Hi all,
If I use grub --version I get the following :-

$grub --version

grub (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I ams shown the various utilities which grub2 has but can't find version
info.

~$ grub-
grub-editenv grub-install grub-mkimage grub-probe
grub-setup
grub-emu grub-mkdevicemap grub-mkrescue grub-set-default

Or even tried this :-

 grub2 --version
bash: grub2: command not found

The only way I am able to find version info. is using dpkg -l grub2$ dpkg -l

[Bug 299338] Re: grub2 taking configuration from somewhere else

2008-11-17 Thread Shirish Agarwal
The differences as I see are here :-

menu.lst shows :-

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
root(hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=some UUID ro
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ###
set root=(hd0,1)
search --fs-uuid --set some different UUID
menuentry "Ubuntu, linux 2.6.27-7-generic" {
linux /vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=same UUID as given in
menu.lst ro quiet splash
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic
}

Now the issue is

a. Why does it set root at (hd0,1) and not (hd0,0)
b. What is this

search --fs-uuid --set some different UUID

Why there is some different UUID here

Obviously in both the files just from a security concern I have not put
up the UUID's which are given therein.

Output of df -h

/dev/sdb1 466G 71G 395G 16% /media/FreeAgent Drive

Obviously, the device where all the action should be is at :-

/dev/sda1 1.9G 48M 1.8G 3% /boot

I know I have kept much much more than ever its going to be needed but
that's another thing altogether.

If anybody needs some more info. feel free to ask the same here.

[Bug 296729] Re: VERSION is omitting the release

2008-11-17 Thread Jamu Kakar
I've taken a brief look at this and I'm not sure how the version
could have gotten into this broken state (and I have verified that
it is broken, as reported). I've just used autoppa-switch on trunk
as:

autoppa-switch 1.0.24-0ubuntu0 intrepid

and it generates the right version string:

VERSION =
"AUTOPPA_VERSION(1.0.24-0ubuntu0.8.10)"[len("AUTOPPA_VERSION("):-1]

I wonder if the broken version was a result of an issue in AutoPPA
(such as intrepid not being in the list of known Ubuntu releases)
and if the recent changes Chris made to integrate autoppa-switch
have fixed it? I don't have an AutoPPA environment in place here
and it's late; tomorrow when I have more time I'll do a test build
and see if the bug persists.

[Bug 299340] [NEW] Evnice is missing keyboard shortcuts to navigate between form fields

2008-11-17 Thread trjonescp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

There is no easy way to navigate between form fields in a PDF document.
This can be particularly frustrating with forms that have a separate
text entry for each individual character. I think [Tab] makes the most
sense. The current behavior of [Tab] is not very useful at all.

If Evince could detect single character form fields and automatically
advance to the next field (a-la Adobe Reader) that would be ideal.

Using Ubuntu 8.10, Evince 2.24.1
