Try enabling hotkey event in the thinkpad-acpi module!

This way hal gets the events, or you could control the events from the
acpi interface in /etc/acpi.

[Bug 370752] Re: cdrom not seen in jaunty

2009-05-03 Thread Rajeev Nair
Motherboard ASUS M2A VM with chipset AMD 690 G
Seagate sata harddisk.

I had this problem when installing intrepid live cd where it used to
read hard disk instead of the cd rom drive as if confused which device
is which.

I had to give additional boot options in live cd all-generic-ide and
pci=nomsi.

But not sure which option did the trick because it didnt really work
first time and after a few times with those flags ,it booted from cd.

After installation i never had problems though.

BUt with upgrade to jaunty, /dev/scd0 (which was device name in
intrepid) doesnt even exist.

Hope that helps.

rajeev

[Bug 371525] [NEW] laptop-mode crashes taking up 100% CPU with IOWait when polling for battery level is enabled

2009-05-03 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: laptop-mode-tools

When enabling battery polling in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/battery-level-
polling.conf, switching to battery results in crashing the laptop with
100% CPU usage, most of it being IOWait. Using htop I was able to see a
lot of laptop-mode battery-related processes running just before
crashing. When the laptop crashes, it usually has very high HDD usage
and is unresponsive to any keys. Magic SysRq key always works in
rebooting the laptop. I was able to fix this by disabling battery level
polling.

[Bug 367608] Re: Konsole Shell Refused to Start after 8.10 -> 9.04 upgrade

2009-05-03 Thread z_mikowski
Confirmed Fix:

The link in /etc/rcS.d/S11... as outlined in bug 338071 fixes the issue
after reboot. Explicitly:

* Ensure /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh exists (it should)
* Symlink in /etc/rcS.d as below:

# cd /etc/rcS.d
# sudo \
  ln -s ../init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh S11mountdevsubfs.sh

This will fix the problem on reboot. You may also run the script by
hand in the virtual terminal to fix:

# /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh start

* There is no need for any other fix; explicity, no need to add a
/dev/pts entry in /etc/fstab; and no need to add users to groups. This
single fix solves all problems I have found with Konsole startup.

[Bug 371521] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio boot problems

2009-05-03 Thread andreika73
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Hi there everybody who might see this. I'm going crazy over this thing
here. I am trying to install Ubuntu Studio ( I have tried 9.04, 8.10 and
8.04.1 which supposed to work on low memory machines) on HP 753N,
Intel(R)Pentium 4, 2.53 GHz, x86, 32-bit OS (XP Professional-works fine)
and 1GB memory. The installation finishes up just fine and when I reboot
the system the first time, it goes up loading Ubuntu Studio letters
almost to the end and then just freezes up.

It always stops at the same spot. In other words, I haven't been able to
start the system, not even once. I have Hard Drives on the PC and
install Ubuntu Studio on one HD using the whole disk of 80 GB hoping
that having 2 OSs on 2 separate disks would give some pluses. I use EXT3
for Linux partition.

Guys, plz take me out of this misery! J
Thank you in advance, Andrei

Not sure why is said /dev/hd0 instead of /dev/sd0

I have two small FAT32 (/dev/sda1) and NTFS /dev/sda2, and a large EXT3

[Bug 367608] Re: Konsole Shell Refused to Start after 8.10 -> 9.04 upgrade

2009-05-03 Thread z_mikowski
Success! I propose we call this a duplicate of bug 338071. Confirmed I
am no longer in tty group, but Konsole works as expected.

Also, I suggest to raise the importance of 338071. This omission seems
to be biting people in numerous apps across Gnome and Kubuntu.

There appears very much related to this bug:

In fact, it may be a complete duplicate. This is from Dean's notes
here:

I removed myself from the tty group, and ran the named script. Will
report back on success/failure after logging out and back in.

[Bug 371513] [NEW] 9.04 su portatile HP Compaq Armada E500

2009-05-03 Thread Roberto Bruni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

* Preparing restricted drivers ...
* Stating Kernel even manager ...
* Loading hardware drivers ...

Caratteristiche tecniche del PC:
Processore Pentium III (Coppermine)
Memoria 512 Mb

Nota: sul "Desk Top" la 9.04 mi funziona perfettamente.

[Bug 326609] Re: [MASTER] No flash in firefox after upgrade from intrepid to jaunty

2009-05-03 Thread Tom Smythe
I have had the same or similar problem with flash except that I get a
terrible swwshing sound from my speakers whenever accessing a site that
uses flash. I have tried every suggestion on this link line to no
avail. Adobe's flash test page does not see that I have flash installed
in firefox. Firefox thinks I have the latest version and that it is
operational. So does Ubuntu. Furthermore, I have NO problem with flash
when using either Epiphany of Seamonkey as my browser. Don't want to
change browsers but running out of options. Anyone, any other
suggestions?

[Bug 357673] Re: No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume, sliding LCD brightness on X31, X32, T60, R50e, T42, R52

2009-05-03 Thread Johannes Hessellund
I think brightness events should be handled by gnome-power-manager.
Maybe it is just a bug in there!??

My T42 handles brightness and sound in hardware.

Gnome-power-manager should accept the event, show a notification, and
remember the current state of brightness.

I am not sure which app normally handles volume events, but I would
think its a bug in there!

Maybe a combination with hal not forwarding event, because it knows this
stuff is handled by hardware ?

I think a script is not the right way. Finding the real bug should be
done!

[Bug 370185] Re: ath9k AR928X Fails to connect, times out

2009-05-03 Thread GPenguin
Ok, performed the fresh install and the system connected first time @
54Mbps with an orange/red wireless button LED. When downloading
updates, the LED flashed very quickly between orange and blue. I
checked the throughput and it was still 54 Mbps. Then in the middle of
downloading, the LED went blue and the rate dropped to "Unknown". After
a bit, the LED was flashing between the two again and the rate was at
1Mbps. Now, its 1Mbps with the orange light.

The rate is fluctuating like crazy and the color of the LED doesn't seem
to indicate anything. Going to attempt apport-collect command again.

On my MacBook4,1 running Jaunty amd64, bluetooth still goes away after

As a workaround I've added the following to /etc/pm/sleep.d, but this is
obviously not a real fix:

[Bug 356133] Re: [jaunty] vesa driver stopped working (no devices found) inside KVM after X update

2009-05-03 Thread Michael Robinson
For what it's worth, I do not believe this bug is fixed in kvm-85, on
the following basis:

1. I compiled the kvm-85 userland code from Sourceforge and ran it with
the Ubuntu 9.04 kvm-source kernel module (1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu11). Same
behavior, same problem.

2. I reviewed the release notes for kvm-85
(http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=180599&release_id=677328)
and found no evidence this bug was addressed in kvm-85.

[Bug 351628] Re: [jaunty] NetworkManager widget doesn't save connection data

2009-05-03 Thread Halasear
There is a work around that I have figured out, you may do either one of
two things. If you have the KDE Wallet Subsystem turned on, it will save
your settings, or if you set the values manually through the
configuration file located
/{home}/.kde/share/apps/networkmanagement/connections/somecrazystringconfigname

locate the following section
[802-11-wireless-security]
authalg=open
group=
keymgmt=None
leapusername=
pairwise=
proto=
securityType=WEP40
weptxkeyindex=0

#these will be missing, add the following keys and enter what you need.
since I was using a hex key for the WEP I added the following password
(located where the # symbols are)

password=
leappassword=
psk=
wepkey0=#
wepkey1=
wepkey2=
wepkey3=
weppassphrase=

I hope it helps!

I think that message "no space left on device" means your MTRR registers
are all used up. (There are only eight of them.)

To check whether MTRR cleanup is enabled, you can run "dmesg | grep

and then "New variable MTRRs" (as well as a lot of other output).

No, I haven't tested with that...

Ludovico Cavedon wrote,
>However I filed a bug 370507 asking backporting of bluez 4.37 to jaunty.
Please help to promoting the backport by testing the bluez package I
mentioned in that page (i.e. the bluez package in my ppa) and reporting
to that bug

I've recommended it for release. Others following this thread should do
likewise. It would be best to have this added automatically to Jaunty
to improve overall experience for newer users. Thanks for posting it!

[Bug 354743] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 connects with internet but ramp down on network activity while browsing or emailing

2009-05-03 Thread gra_x2
Sorry for the delay in reply. I was sent to China for 2 weeks for work.

Anyhow. Booted up Kubuntu and started web browser and tried to load a
page.

Did the same thing it normally does. It starts to download, but you can
see in the download speed it falls away to zero in about 10 seconds and
then waits with no more information coming in.

[Bug 246392] Re: openct doesn't recognize etoken

2009-05-03 Thread Jens Jorgensen
This bug still is not fixed in Jaunty. Is there some reason? Also
another bit is now broken: the script that the udev rules file calls,
/lib/udev/openct_usb is trying to call "udevinfo" which no longer
exists. It should be using "udevadm info" instead. This too is fixed in
the upstream. Can we get an update in the package please?

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-05-03 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Theodore :

I built and tested your branch : git://github.com/tytso/ext4.git and the
bad news is : no crash. I was able to delete my whole filesystem and the
problem was not reproducible when it always takes 2 seconds for the bug
to appear.

However the good news is that I'm ready to take a lot more time on this.
If it requires me to git bisect again the whole jaunty kernel and to
apply commit dbf8b1c4 each time I test one commit, I'm ready to do it.
If you can only guide me about what is the best method to continue and
find the information you need, I'll be overjoy to play again with this.

[Bug 371337] Re: Seti application expieriences SSE3 emulation crashes on Jaunty Jackalope 9.04

2009-05-03 Thread michael37
A set of problems reported by an owner of another type CPU.

CPU typeGenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
[Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7]
Number of processors4
CoprocessorsNVIDIA Quadro NVS 290 (255MB)
Operating SystemLinux 2.6.28-11-generic

SSE-3 application:

6.2.15

SSE-2 application:

6.6.20

>From http://lunatics.kwsn.net/linux/64-bit-
sse2-app.msg17330.html#msg17330:

I, too, have started experiencing work unit errors with optimized
astropulse when I upgraded to Jaunty. In my case almost every work unit
failed (a few, say, ~10% finish successfully).

This is a on a Yorkfield core (Intel Core Quad Q9300).

Note: The optimized MB SSE3 and SSE2 (editor: other applications) suffer the
same fate as optimized astropulse on my system.
Editor: the similarities are (1) all applications are build with intel compiler
and (2) all applications tend to heavily stress CPUs.

Other possibly relevant information:
einst...@home is the only other project running on this machine
VMware Server 2.0.1 is used to run a Windows XP guest
This was rock solid under Ubuntu 8.10 (i.e. never experienced a single work
unit error).
I tried both BOINC 6.2.15 and 6.6.20 to see if it made any difference, but it
did not.
