[Bug 270612] Re: fonts too thick if printing from Openoffice on HP Deskjet 6540 (hplip)

Same problem for me - and only in OpenOffice. I always had this problem
since I began using Ubuntu (I think 8.04)...now it's still there in 9.04
(OOo 3.0.1). My printers: DeskJet 930c and OfficeJet J6424.

Removing metacity means that there won't be any window manager any more,
i. e. the window for setting accessibility, etc. don't have any
decorations. Also, I get a never-ending waiting mouse cursor, probably
due to gnome-session waiting for the window manager to appear.

RealtimeKit is a D-Bus system service that changes the scheduling policy
of user processes/threads to SCHED_RR (i.e. realtime scheduling mode) on

time scheduling to be used by normal user processes.

It will be used as a runtime dependency of pulseaudio to allow
pulseaudio to get high priority for audio playback.

[Bug 396393] [NEW] Update Manager does not display fingerprint authentication dialog

2009-07-06 Thread Ramon Casha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I have an HP Compaq 6710b laptop, which has an integrated Authentec
fingerprint reader. I have set up libpam-fprint to do the
authentication, and it works ok for logins, sudo and most applications.
However, update-manager does not display any window to prompt for the
fingerprint. The fingerprint still works however there is no visual
indication that the user should supply the fingerprint. The update
manager window seems to "hang" instead. Other "privileged" applications
show a prompt window.

[Bug 396387] [NEW] Unable to resolve VPN names AND connect to the Internet

2009-07-06 Thread Eeqmcsq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

1) I am running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 (upgraded from Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10)
2) Version for network-manager-vpnc: 0.7.1~rc4.20090316+bzr21-0ubuntu2
3) When I use VPN on my home PC to connect to my work LAN, I expected to be
able to resolve my work PC's name and surf the Internet normally. This was the
existing behavior in Intrepid 8.10.
4) When I connect to my work LAN via VPN, my home PC could not simultaneously
surf the Internet. I could resolve my work PC's name and I could ping my work
PC's IP address.

I found a solution where I should edit my VPN connection -> IPv4
Settings tab -> Routes -> check "Use this connection only for resources
on its network". When I did so, I was able to surf the Internet, but I
could NOT resolve my work PC's name. Pinging my work PC's IP address was
still OK. Summary:

"Use this connection only for resources on its network" is unchecked:
- nslookup my_work_pc (this took a few moments, but it correctly returned my
work pc's IP)
- ping my.work.pc.IP (this worked correctly)
- ping 74.125.127.99 (this is google's IP address. this FAILED)

"Use this connection only for resources on its network" is checked:
- nslookup my_work_pc (this FAILED. ** server can't find my_work_pc)
- ping my.work.pc.IP (this worked correctly)
- ping 74.125.127.99 (this worked correctly)

Other info:
- My vpn type is "Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc)"

[Bug 395966] Re: nautilus cannot be used now

2009-07-06 Thread Felix Crux
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to
encounter the problem, and the behaviour you actually encountered (in as much
detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 329424] Re: [Regression] Thinkpad T61 card reader no longer works

2009-07-06 Thread Sancho
I have a simmiliar problem.
Having 8GB microSDHC card from Nokia phone. The card works fine with 2
different phones.
When I plug it to the adapter for SD and into my reader, the system detects it:
[ 2554.266044] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access HP USB20 HS-COMBO 4.82

But, the fdisk results for this card are dissapointing:

Units = cylinders of 15624 * 512 = 7999488 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

That's it - no partition, no data. Simple reboot to windows and voila - the
content is there. Using 2GB card in the same reader with the same adaptor works
also in 8.10.
The used kernel version is 2.6.27-14-generic.

[Bug 396342] Re: evolution uninstalls gnome & gnome-desktop-environment

2009-07-06 Thread Felix Crux
Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. I just tried, but failed,
to reproduce it on my machine. The step I took was to run (in a
terminal) "sudo apt-get autoremove evolution abiword gnome-games" and
then I examined the list of packages that would be removed. I did not
see any indication that GNOME would be uninstalled.

Can you please elaborate on how exactly you ran in to the problem, as
well as how you installed GNOME and those programs in the first place?
Is this a standard installation from the CD distribution, or did you
perhaps install GNOME manually at some earlier point? Thanks!

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-07-06 Thread dlf
Using a Dell latitude D620 running Ubuntu 8.10 using kernel -
2.6.27-14-generic, I can overheat the laptop in ~ 25 minutes running the
program stress with the following syntax: stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 2
--vm-bytes 128M

While running the program stress I have loaded the i8k module and gkrellm to
force the fan on full time. The fan is running at full speed prior to
initiating the test with no load. Even with the fan still running, the laptop
will shutdown after ~ 25 minutes. At start of the run with nothing running -

coretemp-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +56.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Shutdown at -

coretemp-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +89.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

I have a HP DV1240 running Ubuntu Jaunty running kernel - 2.6.28-11-generic
which is running really hot also. I haven't attempted to stress test it to
determine its thermal threshold, but it gets uncomfortably hot also and the fan
doesn't appear to kick nearly enough.

I'll attach a lshw of the dell 620.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

At a minimum, we need more details on how the system is broken, and what
specific problems you are seeing. Thanks!

[Bug 276241] Re: Inrepid alpha: Toolbar in Inkscape has no size when detached.

2009-07-06 Thread PeterShinners
I am testing with "0.47~pre0~0ubuntu1~9.04" from the Inkscape PPA.

The detached toolbars now maintain the size they had when docked. This
keeps them usable, but they are often much wider or narrower than needed
for the contained toolbar buttons. This behavior is better, but still
not convenient when detaching toolbars from a maximized Inkscape.

message, "required input is missing", I don't know which input is referred to.
I would really like to attach the requested logfiles as seperate attachments,
but there's only one attachment possibility.

I get a lot of errors in ubuntu lately and I don't like it. I am even
sceptic if firefox will let me post the message at once.

The problem I face now is major; sound doesn't work on any device. This started
around the time when I plugged in my external usb harddrive for the first time.
I cannot tell whether there's a correlation between the two events. The system
responded a little unstable to my harddrive.
I get different errors on testing different choice of drivers. It mostly says
something like: "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample
! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect: Connection refused" when I push the test
button. It looks like the bullshit messages I get when I use windows; no clue
what's going on or why not worky.
It is not constant either; it would give me these messages on all devices 5
minutes ago, and now it only does it on pulse-audio (a thing I never use
because I don't trust it), while on the other devices, like alsa and oss, it
runs the test routine again but still without anything audible.

I tried to download the alsa-update script from some forum, but the
forum wouldn't let me, only gave me another error message. I believe
too, that it is not the alsa that fails on me in particular, because oss
and pulseaudio too don't work. I actually have the feeling that I have a
virus, is this at all possible?

I tried kernels 2.6.28 and 2.6.27 and both didn't work. That's why I believe it
is not the same bug as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/360862
I work on an amd64 by the way.

Thanx, anyone who is as patient to pay attention to this.

FIrst of all, you must write your bug report in English. Then, This bug
it's not a firefox bug because in that web page appears flash items, not
images, so you must install flashplugin-nonfree and then it will work
well.

Bye!

[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly

2009-07-06 Thread Chris Bauer
I'm not a programmer so I don't have anything productive to add to this
discussion, I just want to say that this bug is important to me. I dread
the moment when downloading a file in Firefox and the associated
application I want to open with isn't in the drop down list. I've been
using Ubuntu more than 2 years now and still have lots of trouble
locating the application I want. It is a big problem for me, and likely
for any non-programmer user who ever downloads files in Firefox.

Thanks everyone for your hard work.

[Bug 395949] Re: gnome-appearance-properties does not update .fonts.conf

I believe that statement is not entirely correct, because if you change
the font hinting in Appearance Preferences, FF 3.5 and Skype etc do not
change, even after restarting. You need to manually modify the
~/.fonts.conf file to make the change stick.

2009-07-06 Thread Gabriel Ruiz
I'll mark this as invalid because, first of all, you must tell the same idea of
your bug in his name in English, then you must explain it. To solve your "bug"
you must do
 sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Bye

P.D.: For a next time, please, tell more things, but in English.

[Bug 396360] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon does not start during an NX session
