I can confirm this is happening on my setup as well, but I pretty much
have the same setup as the op. 12.02, 64bit and all that so I think my
bug report would be pretty much a repeat of what was already posted.

For me on 13.04 an alternate workaround was to configure
/etc/default/nodm to start on vt8, although this leaves plymouth active
on vt7, whether or not the splash option is on the kernel command line.
The workaround to add plymouth --wait --quit || true to
/etc/init.d/nodm worked fine for me.

I am running GnuCash 2.4.12 on Ubuntu 13.04 (64-bit) and have the same
problem, even with all latest package updates. (And the same problem
with GnuCash 2.4.11 on Ubuntu 12.10 (64-bit).

I solved this problem in the following way:
My root file system (ext4 which contained both /var and /usr) was low on
inodes, but not free space, so monitoring didn't complain. You can check
this by running `df -i` (as opposed to `df -h` which shows free space in
human readable format).
