[Bug 1579374] Re: amdgpu causes NULL pointer dereference when trying to use Topaz (Radeon R7 M265) GPU

2016-08-06 Thread Yuri Ribeiro Sucupira
As I reported here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
amdgpu/+bug/1608042/comments/31

...my computer is exactly the same (Dell Inspiron 5448 laptop, BIOS A06,
hybrid graphics Intel Broadwell - module i915 + AMD Topaz XT R7
M260/M265 - module amdgpu) and after installing 64-bit XUbuntu 16.04
"Xenial" I got the same problem, because of the kernel 4.4.

I got rid of the kernel-AMD GPU issues after doing some reverse commit
and identifying that kernel 4.6-rc1 received a "good commit" that fixed
the problem.

I'm currently running 4.6-rc7, but I can confirm that from 4.6-rc1 ahead
the "NULL pointer dereference" bug's gone. From kernel 4.6-rc1 or newer
I'm able to execute "DRI_PRIME=1 glxgears" without experiencing any
issues.

[Bug 1603989] Re: Radeon R7 not work in ubuntu xenial

2016-08-06 Thread Yuri Ribeiro Sucupira
Please download these files (kernel version 4.7):

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.7/linux-
headers-4.7.0-040700_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_all.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.7/linux-
headers-4.7.0-040700-generic_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_amd64.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.7/linux-
image-4.7.0-040700-generic_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_amd64.deb

Then install the three files and reboot your system so it loads the 4.7
kernel.

How to install these packages:

1) Execute this command in order to install Gdebi:
sudo apt-get install gdebi -y

2) Right-click onto any .DEB file then go to "Properties" and define
"Gdebi" as the default app to open .DEB packages.

3) Double-click the linux-
image-4.7.0-040700-generic_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_amd64.deb file so
Gdebi will open it. Click the "Install Package" button and provide your
password.

4) Repeat the installation step (item 3, above) with files linux-
headers-4.7.0-040700_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_all.deb and linux-
headers-4.7.0-040700-generic_4.7.0-040700.201608021801_amd64.deb

An alternative way of installing these packages is to open a shell
terminal window, then cd (change directory) into the directory where
those three .DEB files were downloaded into (make sure those 3 .DEB
files are the ONLY .DEB files present in the folder), and then execute
this installation command:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Once you install kernel 4.7, reboot your system. GRUB will select
4.7-generic by default. See if this solves the problem.

[Bug 1325833] Re: gnome-keyring has an inadequate man page and employs insecure defaults for GPG passphrase caching

2016-08-06 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I'm marking this bug as fixed, in accordance with the upstream bug
report:

"gnome-keyring no longer implements a gpg-agent. The gnupg agent and
pinentry have been better integrated with GNOME.

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/distributor-
list/2015-August/msg0.html "

[Bug 1421955] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon lacks a man page

2016-08-06 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- gnome-keyring-daemon lacks a man page telling about the program and how
- to use it. It currently has only a place holder with virtually no
- information. Attached is a draft for discussion of a man page for the
- daemon.
+ Impact
+ ==
+ gnome-keyring-daemon lacks a man page telling about the program and how to
use it. It currently has only a place holder with virtually no information.
+
+ The gnome-keyring developer added a better manpage in 3.10 but this
+ wasn't noticed by the Debian packages until 3.12. Therefore, this is
+ just a packaging problem as the better manpage is already provided in
+ the package source. This bug therefore affects Ubuntu 14.04 LTS but not
+ 16.04 LTS.
+
+ Test Case
+ =
+ $ man gnome-keyring-daemon
+
+ Does the manpage provide program options?
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ None. The gnome-keyring-daemon manpage in 14.04 LTS is so minimal as to be
basically useless.

[Bug 1610434] Re: Reboot after Ubuntu GNOME Trusty HWE upgrade freezes @ Restoring resolver state

2016-08-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
** Description changed:

Updated info; You should be able to reproduce this as follows:

Step #1: Install Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.2, 14.04.3, or 14.04.4. Boot into
the fresh installation when complete and apply all available updates via
UI, then reboot when instructed. It seems important to apply the post-
install updates via UI rather than using the terminal!

Step #2: Enable trusty-proposed, update the cache and run "apt-get
install update-manager". (That will update the components needed to
display HWE EOL notifications). Then disable trusty-proposed, set Notify
me of a new release to Never, and update the apt cache again.

- Step #3: Completing step #2 may be enough to launch the HWE EOL upgrade
- notification. If not close any open update or notifier UI, then from
- terminal run "apt-get update" followed by "update-manager".
+ Step #3: Based on recent tests completing step #2 should be enough to
+ launch the HWE EOL upgrade notification in which case you just need to
+ choose to install the HWE upgrade and reboot when prompted.

- If the HWE EOL notification fails to display after step #2 or step #3
+ If the HWE EOL notification fails to appear close any open update or
+ notifier UI, then from terminal run "apt-get update" followed by
+ "update-manager". If the HWE EOL notification still fails to appear then
I'll have to go back to the drawing board.

  Original content begins here:

Having updated update-manager from trusty-proposed yesterday I booted
into Ubuntu GNOME Trusty w/Utopic HWE and update-notifier told me that
my HWE was EOL so I accepted the upgrade. Everything seemed to complete
successfully and I was notified to reboot. Upon doing so boot freezes
with the message "Restoring resolver state". I was unsure what package
to file this against and since I can't boot that install I was unable to
file using ubuntu-bug anyway. This freeze occurs whether trying to boot
the lts-xenial kernel or the older lts-utopic kernel.

I can collect info as needed, the only useful info I see in the logs in
from apt/history beginning with the update-manager update yesterday and
ending with the HWE EOL upgrade just a short time ago:

[Bug 1610434] Re: Reboot after Ubuntu GNOME Trusty HWE upgrade freezes @ Restoring resolver state

2016-08-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
Tested beginning with Lubuntu 14.04.2 i386 and the HWE EOL upgrade boots
fine.

Also fresh installs of Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.5 work perfectly well on the
same hardware. I even applied all available updates to a freshly
installed 14.04.5 and it still boots just fine.

So, based on current results, this is somehow limited only to HWE EOL
upgrades on Ubuntu GNOME.

2016-08-06 Thread Doug McMahon
That bug is ill-described but yeah, this is why what's happening with
14.04.5 HWE is not unexpected, apparently it's inevitable
re-occurrence was of no big concern.

(- 14.04 HWE is/was also affected but that's a dead dog now.

[Bug 1594974] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu0.2: bcmwl kernel module failed to build

2016-08-06 Thread Georges Rodier
Have just recently installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS on a venerable HP
notebook. The install was done as Ubuntu 16.04 had failed miserably.

Today I got the notice regarding the need to install the new 16.04
hardware updater. N.B., yesterday that update went without a problem on
my older DELL PC (13 years old) where I had also recently done a
reinstall of UM 14.04.2.

[Bug 1610619] [NEW] Xscreen saver and lightdm prevent use of operating system (total lockout) after guest session screen lock

2016-08-06 Thread Omadas
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce bug:

1) Install xubuntu or mint xfce
2) download and set lightdm as desktop manager
3) sign in to a guest session and either close your laptop lid or allow
timeout to start screen lock

Why this is a bug:

xscreensaver will not accept a blank/null password, and with a
blank/null password assigned to the guest session, the xscreensaver
client will not allow the user to continue their session or login as a
new user (because you cannot login as a new user as xscreensaver does
not support lightdm for this feature.

Why this is severe:

when xscreensaver locks the guest user out of their session, all other
users are similarly locked out. Being so locked out, the computer most
be hard-reset/rebooted and any documents and processes not saved prior
to the guest session being logged in is lost.

Why this is a lightdm bug:

Because lightdm is not setting the gconf setting to disable the lock
screen feature for guest sessions

Why this is a xscreensaver bug:

xscreensaver does not support any dm other than mdm

[Bug 1610618] [NEW] emplacing strange characters in final .djvu file

2016-08-06 Thread Michael Ding
Public bug reported:

djvubind would emplacing strange characters in the final .djvu file. It
does this by replacing, say, "i" with "t with an over-dot" on every
occurrence of "i" on a whole page. Or it replaces "t" with a short
vertical stroke on a whole page. And usually the errors persist until
the next page starts. Please let me know if this can be fixed. Thank you

ImportError: No module named i18n

i18n error repeated multiple times with different tests.

The testresources error can be fixed by build-depending on python-
testresources (universe).

As for the i18n error, in the neutron 9.0.0.0b2 Changelog, there's this line:
* Drop neutron/i18n.py in favor of neutron/_i18n.py

I'm guessing that needs a simple patch to rename the imports.

The tests don't currently fail on Debian sid since neutron 9 is only in
experimental there.

[Bug 1610612] [NEW] One should be able to open multiple items through the AO before it closes

2016-08-06 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

If one goes into the Activities Overview and clicks on an application,
the AO closes and it opens. This seems logical and it is what most
probably want most of the time, however I on many occasions need to open
several applications at the same time, or do a search and then get it to
open multiple items at a time so that I don't need to have to keep re-
entering the AO.

So what I would really like to see would be something like shift + click
(or similar) on an item to open it but not close the AO, and just normal
click to open it and also close the AO.

Same issue and same apparmor messages in syslog when upgrading from

[Bug 1610611] [NEW] upgrade from lubuntu 14.04 to 16.04.1 failed

2016-08-06 Thread Peter-jezdec
Public bug reported:

While upgrading, I was asked if I wanted to keep old kernel-img.conf or
install new or view differences side by side. I selected view
differences side by side and the upgrade hung. I was not able to restart
it in any way and had to do a fresh install.

unfortunately for me, upgrading to kernel 4.7 didn't solve the issue.
Nor downgrading to kernels 3.13.10, 3.13.11 or 3.19.

[Bug 1610608] [NEW] Browser slowdown: cause: global menu integration with many bookmarks

2016-08-06 Thread Akima
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu Desktop 14.04.5 LTS (fully up to date)
Firefox: 48.0 build 2 (it's the package supplied by default in Ubuntu)

The problem:
I have ~2200 bookmarks in my Firefox profile. These are being displayed in the
Unity global menu. This causes the following problems:
 * Firefox becomes unresponsive for roughly 2 seconds every 15 seconds.
 * The Ubuntu Unity global menu system itself starts to misbehave.

Regarding the "misbehaving". One example is this. My email client has
a menu bar. When Firefox is running in the background and my mail
client is focused, I can press the Alt key to search the menu. I type a
few key strokes and I then hit enter on the option I want. Nothing
happens. So the menu searching and displaying is working but you can't
actually activate an item. This issue only occurs with Firefox running.

Work-around:
go to: about:config
set: ui.use_unity_menubar;false
observe that Firefox is now once again responsive to use.

My old work-around:
Before Firefox 48.0 I was able to work around this issue by simply making sure
that the vast majority of my bookmarks were not displayed in the "Bookmarks
Menu". Now that the latest release of Firefox has forced all bookmarks
(including "Other Bookmarks") to appear in the menu, this work around does not
work. So I now have to disable Unity menu bar integration.

One possible fix:
Override the new Firefox behaviour that forces "Other Bookmarks" to display in
the menu. This means users have the option of making their bookmarks not be
loaded into the Unity global menu. If you did this, it may also be worth
adding some code to detect vast numbers of bookmarks being displayed in the
global menu. When this occurs you could display a message to the user
informing them that they should move bookmarks out of the "Bookmarks Menu" and
into "Other Bookmarks" (as visible in the Firefox "Library").

I expect I'm not the only long-term Firefox user to have built up over
2000 bookmarks. I expect many users wont be able to find the cause of
the Firefox slow downs and global menu misbehaving, so they will be
stuck with it or will switch to another browser.

[Bug 1610606] [NEW] Strange font colour change when cursored over in gnome-tweak-tool after GTK theme change

2016-08-06 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found that on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.20 if I go into the
gnome-tweak-tool and change the GTK theme, even if I then change it
back, the fonts go really strange when cursored over as shown in the
screencast which I have attached (when I switch it to Adwaita, though it
is less noticeable, there is still a slight darkening in the font).
Though seemingly a restart of the gnome-tweak-tool means that all is
well, so I don't think just the themes are causing the trouble, probably
something more with gnome-tweak-tool.

[Bug 1610434] Re: Reboot after Ubuntu GNOME Trusty HWE upgrade freezes saying Restoring resolver state

2016-08-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
** Description changed:

+ Updated info; You should be able to reproduce this as follows:
+
+ Step #1: Install Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.2, 14.04.3, or 14.04.4. Boot into
+ the fresh installation when complete and apply all available updates via
+ UI, then reboot when instructed. It seems important to apply the post-
+ install updates via UI rather than using the terminal!
+
+ Step #2: Enable trusty-proposed, update the cache and run "apt-get
+ install update-manager". (That will update the components needed to
+ display HWE EOL notifications). Then disable trusty-proposed, set Notify
+ me of a new release to Never, and update the apt cache again.
+
+ Step #3: Completing step #2 may be enough to launch the HWE EOL upgrade
+ notification. If not close any open update or notifier UI, then from
+ terminal run "apt-get update" followed by "update-manager".
+
+ If the HWE EOL notification fails to display after step #2 or step #3
+ I'll have to go back to the drawing board.
+
+ Original content begins here:
+

[Bug 1063019] Re: gnome-contacts-search-provider crashed with signal 5 in contacts_ensure_eds_accounts()

2016-08-06 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- starting gnome
+ [Impact]
+ Annoying, unnecessary crash report pop up
+
+ [Test Case]
+ I don't really have a test case for this as I'm not sure how to trigger an
EDS timeout.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The fix is a one-line upstream change to emit a warning instead of an error
upon a timeout communicating with evolution-data-server.
+
+ The fix is part of gnome-contacts 3.20.0 so it's in yakkety and other
+ GNOME 3.20 distros.

[Bug 1610602] [NEW] GRUB install failed when installing ubuntu

2016-08-06 Thread Sam Fuchs
Public bug reported:

I was trying to install Ubuntu on a partition on my SSD. I used GParted
to format it as ext4. Then, during the install process, I formatted as
ext4, using / as the mount point. The installation eventually failed,
saying that GRUB-install failed, a fatal error, which halts
installation. It seems to happen every time I attempt installation.
