didn't file bug
+
+ These are not laptops/devices I regularly use, and in the QA-test I'm
+ navigating (pcmanfm) to the internal drive's directory and opening files
+ using installed apps.
+
+ Various video files all causes gnome-mpv to crash. AVI, MKV, WMV, MP3

+
+ ** MP3s do open with Audacious
+
+ If I select to open the MP3 files with Audacious, they play correctly,

[Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)

2020-07-25 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
@teo1978: Have you tried disabling TPM in BIOS if possible?

You can try an older 5.0.x kernel since there are reports that works.. but it
is not officially supported and don't be surprised if it fails to boot or
causes other problems:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.0.21/

As to why the bug is marked Incomplete, that is because it is linked
with an upstream kernel bug which is marked Incomplete/Needinfo.

On a Dell Precision 7510 Laptop (nVidia Quadro M2000M) running Ubuntu
18.04 , Marco's workaround in #7, Ctrl+alt+f1 -> Ctrl+alt+f2, works for
me. I think I'd prefer to wait for Wayland to be fixed rather than
disable it in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, though.

[Bug 1888970] [NEW] V20.2 Fails to start Telescope/EQMOD

2020-07-25 Thread Robert Van Vugt
Public bug reported:

V20.1 which I have reverted back to works fine but V20.2 Fails to start
telescope via EQMOD/ASCOM. The Start Telescope check box is "grayed" out
and no telescope marker is displayed on Stellarium Screen. I am not
using Stellarium Scope as it was not needed with V20.1. All my settings
are the same between the two versions. I am also using ASCOM 6.4
presently.

[Bug 1806182] Re: dpkg-reconfigure ddclient produces wrong ddclient.conf

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Hansen
> This renders the configuration script useless

Omitting the line continuation backslashes causes the 'server=' and
'protocol=' lines to set defaults that apply to subsequent hostnames, so
it should still work. If it is still not working for you, please paste a
detailed log.

[Bug 1888969] [NEW] Please merge ddclient 3.9.1-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Hansen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu-specific changes in 3.8.3-1.1ubuntu1:
  * debian/patches/sample_ubuntu.diff: This is no longer necessary -- the
Debian package no longer installs sample-etc_rc.d_init.d_ddclient.ubuntu.
  * debian/ddclient.NetworkManager: This is a NM hook to stop ddclient when no
default route exists. See bug #998700. ddclient 3.9.1-4 now comes with a
systemd service definition file which contains After=network-online.target, so
this might not be needed.

I am the new Debian maintainer for ddclient, so please let me know if
you would like any changes committed to Debian.

[Bug 1888967] [NEW] Lubuntu Lubuntu 18.04 won't boot after applying updates on a 32-bit machine

2020-07-25 Thread Aere Greenway
Public bug reported:

On a Dell Optiplex-gx260 computer, after applying updates, installing
linux-image-4.15.0-112-generic, when restarting, the system doesn't
boot, and instead ends up in 'rescue mode' (whatever that is).

I'm reporting this on another Dell Optiplex machine (32-bit), because
although the machine having the problem booted on the older kernel
(4.15.0-109-generic), it would not stay alive long enough to report the
problem.

This machine (fortunately) is still using the 4.15.0-100-generic kernel,
so it stays alive long enough to report the problem.

I expected the machine to reboot after applying updates. Instead, it
ended-up in a text-screen, saying it is in 'rescue mode'.

I also attempted to do a fresh install of the latest Lubuntu 18.04 on a
different Dell Optiplex GX-260 machine, and it also ended up in a text
screen in 'rescue mode'.

So I gave up on Lubuntu, and successfully installed Debian 10.4.

[Bug 1882525] Re: [amdgpu] MATE desktop is corrupted upon login on Ryzen APU

2020-07-25 Thread Thomas Szymczak
I've discovered some useful info about this bug. First, there's a forum
thread about it with lots of good info: https://ubuntu-
mate.community/t/20-04-display-issues-with-amd-gpu/21648/37

Second, a new workaround. To recap, the first workaround I found was
booting with nomodeset, but that disables all hardware acceleration. The
new workaround, as detailed in the forum thread, is to open MATE Tweak,
and in the Windows tab, change the window manager to Marco (no
compositor).

Third, we found the upstream bug in xf86-video-amdgpu:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-amdgpu/-/issues/10
. I believe this is packaged as xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu in Ubuntu.
It's been fixed upstream and the Ubuntu Mate devs will include it in
20.04.1 is possible.

Fourth, bug #1873895 appears to be the same bug, but originally reported
as manifesting in Xubuntu. Maybe this is a duplicate.

Bump version in the title as another upstream release has been
published, link below.

Am I missing something here, isn't this a package that is something of a
keystone in the package maintenance toolchain? Couldn't we just cook one
up and release it on our end? If someone gives me the thumbs up I'll
even try to make something happen on that front myself.

[Bug 1888749] Re: sup-mail broken and unusable after Bionic to Focal upgrade

2020-07-25 Thread Iain Parris
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

A user with the "sup-mail" package installed on Bionic (or Eoan) who
upgrades to Focal will find that "sup-mail" becomes completely unusable
after upgrading to Focal, i.e., immediately crashes at run-time.

This is because Focal does not currently package sup-mail, and sup-mail
0.22.1 (version packaged in Bionic and Eoan) is not compatible with Ruby
2.7, the new system Ruby version in Focal.

sup-mail is fixed and packaged in Groovy, so SRU fix would be to
  similarly package sup-mail in Focal.

  [Test Case]

The sup-mail package is not currently packaged in Focal.

So to simulate a Bionic to Focal upgrade, install the Bionic sup-mail
package manually on Focal, and observe that sup-mail is unusable because
it will immediately crash at runtime:

  $ wget
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/s/sup-mail/sup-mail_0.22.1-2_all.deb
  $ sudo dpkg -i ./sup-mail_0.22.1-2_all.deb
  $ sudo apt -f install
  $ sup-mail

Crashes immediately with an error like:
  --- ArgumentError from thread: main
wrong number of arguments (given 2, expected 1)
  /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/sup/logger.rb:74:in `block (2 levels) in
'

- To resolve: install fixed sup-mail package version 1.0-2 on Focal (e.g.,
+ To resolve: install fixed sup-mail package version 1.0-3 on Focal (e.g.,
download deb from Debian unstable or Ubuntu groovy-proposed). Observe
that there is now no crash on Focal after launching "sup-mail".

  [Regression Potential]

Very low. The "sup-mail" package is currently not packaged for Focal,
and is completely unusable after upgrading from Bionic (or Eoan) to
Focal: a 100% repeatable immediate crash at runtime when running on
Focal. Because sup-mail is currently broken and unusable after upgrading
to Focal, no greater regression is possible.

"sup-mail" is a leaf package, i.e., no other packages depend on on it.
So introducing a working version of sup-mail as a new package into Focal
would be very low risk to break any other package.

Care will be required in choosing a version string for Focal, to ensure
that it is no greater than the version string used in Groovy, in order
to avoid future upgrade issues to Groovy.

  [Other Info]

  - I believe that introducing sup-mail into Focal would be in scope as a
SRU, due to a low potential for regressing existing installations but a
high potential for improving the user experience. Based on criteria as
documented for SRU "Other safe cases":

  - I am willing to commit to ensuring that sup-mail is well-maintained in
Ubuntu in future, and have subscribed myself to be notified of all new
  sup-mail Ubuntu bugs.

  - Upstream now also has new maintainers (project & Debian package):

  (1) Upstream project now has two new maintainers: see
. Two long-term users of Sup have
now taken over the maintenance of the upstream project, after seeing the
lack of Ruby 2.7 support previously. I am one of the new upstream co-
maintainers and have been a long-term
continuous Sup user (10+ years). The other new upstream co-maintainer is
, also a long-term user, and who for three
years has separately been one of the downstream Fedora maintainers
  ( for Fedora package "rpms
/rubygem-sup"). We are actively maintaining upstream, and we released
the new version 1.0 (with Ruby 2.7 support).

  (2) Upstream Debian package maintained by the Debian Ruby Team now has
two new named uploaders: see .
I am one of the new named uploaders. Although I am new to Debian
maintenance, the other maintainer is Utkarsh Gupta, who is an
  experienced Debian Developer.

  - "sup-mail" is packaged in Bionic, Eoan, and Groovy - but not in Focal.
This is because upstream sup-mail 0.22.1-3 was removed from Debian
unstable on 2020-04-07 due to FTBFS with lack of Ruby 2.7 support. Then
a new fixed version of sup-mail 1.0-2 was reintroduced to Debian

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1888958/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you

Just repeat again - the fix works where an incorrect driver is detected.
However, no driver is found at all for the LEGION 5 and the touchpad is
therefore not activated.

2020-07-25 Thread Ben T
Nicolas -- I've seen the R7000 Chinese post
(https://www.cnblogs.com/mikeguan/p/13126497.html), and what it
basically entails is blacklisting hid_multitouch (or disabling it in the
kernel and recompiling), which according to other forums seems to have
an effect on some touchpads, but has no effect on the MSFT0001:00
04F3:3140 touchpad we have. I attempted his suggestions anyways, and
saw the same lack of results -- the touchpad remained dead.

[Bug 1870867] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT meta_x11_get_stage_window: assertion failed: (META_IS_STAGE_X11 (impl))

2020-07-25 Thread Ivan Matyunin
I have mutter from proposed, and I don't see any newer version of gnome-
shell in the proposed repository.

I've attached the crash file as well. Also, I'm not really sure if the
crash I reproduced is about this bug or not. I've had other crashes that
were filed separately and have different stack traces but were caused by
using the touchscreen also, such as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1861542

Just in case, here's the actual versions:

sibrus@poseidon:~/tmp$ dpkg --list | grep mutter
ii gir1.2-mutter-6:amd64 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
 amd64GObject introspection data for Mutter
ii libmutter-6-0:amd64 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
amd64window manager library from the Mutter window manager
ii mutter3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
amd64Example window manager using GNOME's window manager
library
ii mutter-common 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
all shared files for the Mutter window manager

sibrus@poseidon:~/tmp$ dpkg --list | grep gnome-shell
ii chrome-gnome-shell10.1-5
all GNOME Shell extensions integration for web browsers
ii gnome-shell 3.36.3-1ubuntu1~20.04.2

ii gnome-shell-common3.36.3-1ubuntu1~20.04.2

[Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-07-25 Thread TJ
Is part of the issue here that some (most) initramfs-tools created
images have an uncompressed early CPU microcode firmware prefixed ?

That is stored as ASCII CPIO which is why Con see's that reported by
'file' since that tool checks the magic signatures at start of a file.

binwalk reveals more detail.

[Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)

2020-07-25 Thread teo1978
Given that https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1888939
has been marked as duplicate of this issue (when it was meant to be
about the fact that the grub menu doesn't provide any non-broken kernel
to boot from, as all are affected by this issue):

While the core issue gets investigated and fixed, it is URGENT that an
earlier, non-broken kernel is made readily available to simple human
beinig like me that just need to use their computer.

I wonder how this hasn't been already done given this issue has been
known for at least a year.

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Helmut Stult
I am a Manjaro developer and we have kernels 4.4 / 4.9 / 4.14 / 4.19 / 5.4 /
5.7 / 5.8
The touchpad doesn't work with one of the kernels.
Screen brightness only works with AMD- or nouveau-Driver, not with the
proprietary driver, like 440.100
The brightness display works, but nothing changes.

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Nicolas Rogues
It's a good question.

In my understanding, the Legion R7000 is the name for China of the
Legion-5 15ARH05. In the Lenovo forum, the Lenovo employee has no access
to the equipment and indicates it's a kernel issue, suggesting it used
to work prior to 5.4 kernel. That looks strange.

https://forums.lenovo.com/topic/view/2713/5020793

Also in this thread a member of the Lenovo forum points out to a blog,
unfortunately in Chinese, of a guy who may have found a workaround. I
tried to google translate it but was not sure of the result to try
anything :

[Bug 1888950] [NEW] Touchpad doesn't work

2020-07-25 Thread Chris Kim
Public bug reported:

I just reinstalled kubuntu and while using my laptop my touchpad stopped
working. I restarted my computer and now the touchpad doesn't show up at
all and doesn't work. I followed the instructions here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection#In_case_your_Touchpad_doesn.27t_work_at_all_.28No_response_from_the_Touchpad.29
and the instructions say to file a bug since I don't see a synaptics
touchpad entry in /proc/bus/input/devices. As instructed, I will also
attach that file.

[Bug 1867402] Re: [snap] Icons in file picker are corrupted

2020-07-25 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I have two themes connected:

content[icon-themes] chromium:icon-themes
gtk-common-themes:icon-themes -
content[icon-themes] chromium:icon-themes
qogir-themes:icon-themesmanual

And only if I choose Yaru or one of the Qogir variants I don't get the
corrupted icons in file picker.

Choosing Adwaita, Dmz-white, Dmz-black, Highcontrast or any other icon
theme results in corrupted icons.

[Bug 1888947] [NEW] Unable to install ubuntu in new SSD

2020-07-25 Thread Nikhil
Public bug reported:

I've installed new internal SSD in my machine and trying to install linux
ubuntu in it using bootable usb drive.
Before trying version 16.04 I tried both version 18 and 20 but after I select

happens past that.
Maybe some issue with display driver or motherboard compatibility.

[Bug 1819543] Re: Does not exit correctly, have to "kill -9

2020-07-25 Thread Mattia
Happens to me with all media files. After closing VLC I can't double click
another file until I kill VLC. The applet also does nothing.
This does seem to depend on which type of video output I use. Automatic often
seems to cause this. VDPAU sometimes seem to cause, and OpenGL also sometimes.
It seems to vary with the codec. X11 video output seems to never cause this,
but consumes a lot of CPU. XVideo seems to be fine too, less CPU consumption.

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Helmut Stult
I have found the cause so far that the touchpad MSFT0001: 00 04F3: 3140
is recognized, but no suitable driver is found.

With the touchpad ELAN0001: 00 04F3: 3140 it seems to work with a few tricks.
ELAN is also available in the kernel config, but MSFT is not.

I just don't understand why there are two different names (ELAN and
MFST) under the same hardware ID - what did Lenovo do?

[Bug 1888570] Re: poweroff not working after apt upgrade

2020-07-25 Thread Günter Neiß
Sorry, I did not know what exactly I havee to do now.
As far as I can see, bisect is a tool to do a binary search inside a repro to
find a commit that causes a failure (a special behaviour).

So to use it I have to have a (checked out) repro.
So I believe the commands given above (#19) must be given on a checkout of the
kernel repro..

On the other hand the link You gave (#19) shows 6 deb-packages (compiled
by You) assuumed by doing the above steps on such a repro.

I will now try to install these 6 deb-packages, hope this is what I
should do.

[Bug 1888942] [NEW] marked url in firefox by using one click isn't copied to clipboard, only with a triple mouse-click

2020-07-25 Thread Matthias Sprau
Public bug reported:

Hi, if I click in an url in firefox, the whole url ist marked, i.e.
highlighted.

If I now use a click on the mousewheel to paste the content of the clipboard
into another software, I discover that the url wasn't copied into the clipboard
- the previous content ist filled in.
That's confusing to me.

I would expect: If I can mark an url in Firefox with a single mouse-click,
which looks like a marking with a triple click, then it should be copied also
in the clipboard.
That would be a consisting behavior.

[Bug 1849084] Re: Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

2020-07-25 Thread Kenji
Anyone try 5.8.0rc6 yet? I decided to try on a whim since this is a
really new laptop. It got rid of many error messages I was getting. And,
I removed the "EnablePageFlip" entry (so back to default) and sleep does
work normally in 5.8.0r6. Maybe try that and see, or wait until stable
releases. Furthermore, VLC would get stuck in the background after
opening, I would have to kill the process, but now I no longer have to
do that either!

[Bug 1888939] [NEW] Unable to boot with 3.19.0.43-generic

2020-07-25 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

My computer is unusable because of bug 1848771, which causes reset on
waking from suspend.

(that such a bug could slip through to a release in the first place is
beyond my understanding. Don't you guys test anything?)

Being unable to suspend means being unable to use the computer. Don't
tell me I can avoid suspending because (1) seriously? and (2) what if I
forget and suspend by accident? Loosing all my data is a
disproportionate punishment.

So, since the bug seems to affect kernel versions 5.1 and later, I
thought I could boot with an earlier one.

I am not familiar with booting with different kernel versions (because
why should I), but Grub's boot menu has an option "Advanced options for
Ubuntu" (or something like that) that opens a submenu where apparently I
can choose a linux kernel version.

A few in the list are post-5.1. The latest available that is pre-5.1 is

   3.19.0.43-generic

So I tried that one, but all I get is a black screen saying "Loading
liunux 3.19.0.43-generic something..." and a blinking cursor.

I waited a few minutes and gave up.

[Bug 1888936] [NEW] cifsd deadlocks / CIFS related Oopses

2020-07-25 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

We're running a server at AWS which collects data from machines over
CIFS. This involves a a lot of mounting and umounting of CIFS (about
100 targets with 2 shares each with 10 delay in between). The targets
might sometimes become unavailable when they turned of for the weekend
or rebooted.

The server doing this has to be rebooted every few hours because CIFS
connection start to hang and don't recover. The usual symptom is:

That is, cifsd gets stuck fetching credentials for the reconnect. I'm attaching
the full syslog with stack traces from all hung cifsd task (I don't see where
the deadlock is there).

The mounting/unmounting is done in a privileged Docker container. If we
restart that, we usually run into an Oops:
