[Bug 1924849] Re: Freeze on "Loading initial ramdisk" on 21.04 (kernel 5.11)

2021-04-18 Thread MilkBoy
So, after installing/removing kernels several times, now linux-
image-5.11.0-16-generic manages to boot up correctly, even though there
seems to be a random 5-20 second longer wait before asking for disk
encryption password (compared to 20.10 with 5.8 kernels). I so have no
idea what's going on here :D

[Bug 1924823] Re: ESP on install medium automatically configured as ESP for install, failing install

2021-04-18 Thread Chris Guiver
I prepared dc7700 using MBR/dos partition table & single partition (done
using gparted on hiruste live).

Did a QA-test install equivalent to comment #9 except partitioning was
done using gparted before ubiquity was run.

(MBR/dos partition table, single partition being sda1)
(representing my many boxes that have MBR/dos partition tables & four primary
partitions, and an upgrade-via-re-install; thus no-format was selected on sda1.
I did get warning about old files impacting install, but partition was empty
(valid warning given how I'm using it though)

grub-install failed & system failed to boot.
no warning messages as per my last comment #17
for comments written as I QA-test refer to
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/419/builds/229742/testcases/1302/results/

alas I forgot to `mount |grep target` as I've done some of my prior
installs, but on screen all reported boot loader was going to sda (disk)
not sdb (installation-media-thumb-drive)

[Bug 1924794] Re: Getting error "ipconfig: no devices to configure" while trying to autoinstall in a VLAN env on s390x

2021-04-18 Thread Frank Heimes
I just did an autoinstall attempt with having removed all config
snippets from the parm-file that are required for the VLAN:

%<%<%<%<%<
A manual update of the initial RAM-disk is required.
QETH device 0.0.c000:0.0.c001:0.0.c002 configured
Note: The initial RAM-disk must be updated for these changes to take effect:

(initramfs) [6nwget: can't connect to remote host (install-server): Connection

%<%<%<%<%<

and now the device c000 and the interface encc000 get activated:

encc000: mtu 1500 qdisc mq qlen 1000
link/ether 26:e4:7c:23:c1:c9 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet6 fe80::24e4:7cff:fe23:c1c9/64 scope link
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

The installation can of course not be completed in this case (since the
VLAN config is now missing), but it shows that this is only a problem
with handling potential VLAN config in the early boot stage (casper?).

[Bug 1924895] Re: Settings crashes as soon as it is opened

2021-04-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partition should be
marked for us as a "Reserved BIOS boot area" and should be at least 1MB in
size. Note that this is not the same as a partition mounted on /boot.

If you do not go back to the partitioning menu and correct this error, boot
loader installation may fail later, although it may still be possible to
install the boot loader to a partition"
---

Again I don't believe I got this error; but it's there today... as
@juliank mentioned in comment #14

[Bug 1893964] Re: Installation of Ubuntu Groovy with manual partitioning without an EFI System Partition fails on 'grub-install /dev/sda' even on non-UEFI systems

2021-04-18 Thread Sai Vinoba
I can confirm that the fix is working as on 20210418 iso (as tested on
Ubuntu and Xubuntu).

Notes:
1) We still see 'No EFI system partition found..." pop-up which may confuse
users.
2) Letting installer create partition on empty disk creates a GPT partition
layout with bios_grub, efi and root, or if we choose install alongside option,
installer creates an EFI partition.

Hi Daniel,

You are awesome. It really helped me. Unlimited hugs and love for your
tip.You saved my day. I don't know how to express my gratitude as I
physically and mentally struggled 5 full days.

After spending a big amount of hard earned money I could not use the system
all these days.

[Bug 1924957] [NEW] AACRAID not exposing drives in Protect mode

2021-04-18 Thread Nathanial Marsh
Public bug reported:

In 18.04 LTS - Drives behind an array were exposed as /dev/sg[12345...] when
expose_externals was set to -1(default)
In 20.04 LTS - This is no longer happening unless you force expose_externals to
1. This is undesirable as it also exposes the disks as /dev/sd[abc] as well as
/dev/sg[123]

No hardware/firmware/bios changes between 18.04 and 20.04.

[Bug 1886059] Re: gnome-shell crashed with assertion failure "!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost" [xcb_io.c:260]

2021-04-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You don't need to remove 'ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com', 'ubuntu-
d...@ubuntu.com', and 'desktop-icons@csoriano' because those are the
core Ubuntu extensions.

Also the set of 'enabled-extensions' does not have to correlate at all
with the set of installed extensions. You can install an extension and
have it disabled, although disabled extensions can still break things in
some cases. That's probably not an issue here.

If you can identify a single extension (or extensions) that causes this
crash then we would appreciate it.

[Bug 1924951] [NEW] Cannot upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 "An unresolvable problem occured while calculating the upgrade."

2021-04-18 Thread Jochen Ehnes
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Release:18.04

I clicked the button to upgrade the system in the dialogue box that
popped up telling me that there is a new version of the OS I can upgrade
to.

After the Distribution upgrade was running for a short while, it showed
the following error message:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and
'apt.log'.

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2021-04-18 Thread oldfred
Just installed Hirsute as of April 18,2021.
hirsute-desktop-amd64.iso

Same issue.

I tried to use Ubiquity installer options to change where grub is
installed and they did not work.

Used grub2's loopmount to boot ISO. It mounts isodevice to NVMe drive but
installer, when it asks to remove mounts does not remove it. I have to manually
unmount it.
Then it does not show mount of ESP on NVMe drive, but once past partitioning
screen and saying not to use ESP on NVMe drive, it mounts ESP on NVMe drive.

I have to check mounts during install process, unmount isodevice and unmount
incorrect ESP and mount correct ESP.
mount
sudo umount -lrf /dev/nvme0n1p5
lsblk -f
mount
sudo umount /dev/nvme0n1p1
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /target/boot/efi

[Bug 1924823] Re: ESP on install medium automatically configured as ESP for install, failing install

2021-04-18 Thread Chris Guiver
@juliank, the install was done on a nearby test box (near my primary
system) simulating a usual install which really will be a MBR/legacy
partition table

the GPT was automatically created when I selected new (I'd have chosen
MBR if given a choice); the systems where this matters are all MBR and
have all four primary partitions already utilized

No warning messages were shown I'm sure !.
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/419/builds/229694/testcases/1302/results
is the QA-test report.

If a message had shown, I'd likely have realized it was GPT & gone back
and created MBR (or pre-prepared as I'd done in most prior QA-test
installs in hirsute/this cycle using gparted) as that is my actual
intended install case (ie. upgrade an existing/prior Ubuntu install from
long ago).

The simple 'install' strategy was used ONLY to make it easier to re-
produce the problem.

Reports made duplicate of this include my actual install boxes with
systems I do care about (d755-5, d780 etc). All are multi-boot with all
primary partitions already utilized.

Re: [Bug 1726548] Re: Windows resized after resume

2021-04-18 Thread William Maddler
After 4 years, there's little hope for this to get fixed.
I just stopped using Gnome, having to resize every single window on resume
is just crazy.

This bug needs to be reopened, I have the same issue on Ubuntu 20.10

[Bug 1923040] Re: en-gb thesaurus is missing

2021-04-18 Thread RichardNeill
Thanks for your response. I looked a bit more into it, and it seems that
the official recommended way of dealing with this problem is the symlink
approach, and that en-GB is explicitly provided by the en-US package -
the compiler of the thesaurus intentionally combined both languages'
spelling variants as synonyms within the same thesaurus.

http://astarix.co.uk/2012/06/proper-british-language-tools-libreoffice/
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=749204
https://askubuntu.com/questions/42850/how-do-i-add-english-uk-thesaurus-and-other-locales-to-libreoffice

In fact, it even gives the right British-English options. When I test it
in LibreOffice, and search for the word "hue", it prompts me with both
"color" (USA) and "colour" (GB). Similarly, it offers "aluminium" and
"aluminum" as synonyms, and "pavement" and "sidewalk".

So, please reconsider - or at least create a metapackage "mythes-en-GB"
which depends on "mythes-en" and contains the symlinks.

(After all, should a better solution arise i.e. someone compiles a
dedicated en-GB thesaurus, we can always improve, but this approach gets
99.9% of the way there, vs. nothing, - and in the unlikely event that
the GB-user ends up with a US-english word, such as "color", it is
already caught by the GB-english spellchecker).

[Bug 1924934] [NEW] 'disks' program faulty

2021-04-18 Thread Dougal
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Mate 20.10 5.8.0-49-generic

I have a 2TB external disk which contains two 1TB partitions. The first
partition is a dd copy of another 1TB disk with directories and files on it (my
films).
dd was successful in its' operation and the new external disk performs as
expected.
dd has left 1TB free space after the operation which I want to use.
I had no options appear on the 'Additional Partition Options' menu.
This I understood to be because the free space was not partitioned.
The only options were in the 'Drive Options' menu.
I opted for Format Disk.
This I now believe to be the wrong thing to do because it did indeed format the
disk.
I now have 2TB of free space instead of 2 x 1TB partitions with one full of my
directories and files.
I believe the gnome-disk-utility to have a bug inasmuch that there is not an
option to format the free space on a disk that has been 'correctly' formatted
and written to using dd.

[Bug 1924932] [NEW] Nautilus default behaviour for executable scripts is poor

2021-04-18 Thread liamdawe
Public bug reported:

This is a papercut / quality of life issue that's really annoying me.

On other file managers, if you set an .sh file as executable, it will
offer to do something. With Ubuntu + Nautilus, it always by default just
opens it in a text editor. This is really annoying and frankly a bad
default to have.

I know there's the right click menu to run as program, but since Ubuntu
is trying to appeal to the masses here, good default behaviour is needed
IMO.

Example: you download a Linux game from GOG, you make it executable and
then you double click to run -> wait a while as text editor tries to
load a multiple GB installer .sh script, which is made with MojoSetup
(it's a graphical app).

Other file managers first ask what to do with a box like: "run? open as
file? run in terminal?". Ubuntu should ideally do this too.

I just don't think auto-opening big .sh executable files by default, in
a text editor, is very good for users.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

While some basic support has been available for the magic mouse 2 for some
time, there now seems to be work on improved support.
Recently there have been some patches posted on LKML to mainline improved
support for the magic mouse 2:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2021/3/27/209
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Apple-Magic-Mouse-2-Linux

The patches are based off of this repo:

Let's say that the EFI partition is not selected, it only shows the type (EFI)
but it's not selected a mount point.
As reported in comment #10 I have also tried the installation explicitly
selecting "don't use this partition" for the EFI on the USB stick. But it
didn't work, same problems of the other attempts.

I know and I apologize, but here is where many other users experienced
problems related to EFI/BIOS and I thought it could be a good thing to
let them know of this alternative workaround, surely less intimidating
than chroot.

2021-04-18 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Comment #11 - it looks you installed on GPT without a bios boot
partition, so there's no space to embed BIOS grub. The installer will
have warned you, please listen to it.

Jeremie, the correct workaround is to deselect the EFI system partition
when you configure partitions in the installer, as I explained in
comment #5.

2021-04-18 Thread Liam Proven
@jeremie2

Ah, fair enough. Mostly I use Ventoy these days, and once the USB key is
formatted with Ventoy, you just copy .ISO files onto it and they
automagically appear in the Ventoy boot menu. So no need for Balena
Etcher etc. any more. Ventoy itself is bootable on BIOS and UEFI PCs and
on Intel Macs.
