The failsafe mode did allow me to analyse the error and see the log
files. So presumably, we know that the HW is in a bad state as shown by
the Xorg.0.log from that particular bug:

No, unfortunately it can't be quietened down. The messages are due to
the way the BUG and WARN macros in the kernel are defined. And they
serve a useful function in that they allow kerneloops.org to track what
messages/oops/warnings are being triggered most and what is the
callpath.

I've added the charpick_applet to my panel and added a new character set
(öä) from the preferences menu.
After a few boots, the applet reverts to the first character set in the
list (áàéíñó½©ث€) and switching to any other character set stop

Not a audio expert and all, but the last known major change to hda-intel
was enabling powersave mode.
Could you try reloading the module without the powersave options?

frequency scaling that make it hard to do. Quiescing DMA in order to do
this will require a framework for drivers to use and is unlikely to
happen since most modern processors don't have this constraint.
