[Bug 673366] Re: Default worker_connections too high for default system

2010-12-01 Thread C Snover
“If you get into that much load, you should know how to configure your
system to deal with it.”

I don’t feel it is unreasonable to expect that the default OS settings
won’t cause the disk to fill up (and, in doing so, cause other stuff to
crash) when the default connection limit is reached. In our case,
someone started hotlinking to a resource which caused an abnormally high
number of connections; normally, this server is very low-load and
doesn’t see more than 10 concurrent connections at any given time.

What I am hearing from you is that it’s dangerous and unwise to assume
that Ubuntu can provide sane settings out of the box, and it was foolish
of me to not plan to receive 100 times the normal amount of traffic.
While you are entitled to this opinion, it is not a position that I
understand or agree with. If that’s not what you intended, I apologise
for misunderstanding, and hope you can clarify.

Regards,

[Bug 673366] Re: Default worker_connections too high for default system

2010-11-30 Thread C Snover
Oops, I made a typo in the original report. Sorry!

The speed of log writing in our scenario (with about 1600 concurrent
connections) was 17MB/sec, not 1MB/sec. As such, I still feel like this
is a potential security issue, since it appears that it is trivial for
even low levels of traffic to nginx to quickly exhaust a server’s disk
space. A single, malicious attacker could easily cause unrelated
applications to crash/corrupt data just by opening a couple thousand
connections to a server and waiting for nginx to fill up the disk.

If the speed of the log writing increases with the number of connection
attempts (1 alert per connection), fewer than 4000 connections could
cause 100MB/s of log data to be written, resulting in disk space
exhaustion on an 80GB disk in under 14 minutes. In our case, with 1600
connections, disk space would have run out in about 75 minutes if we
hadn’t managed to catch it quickly.

[Bug 620827] [NEW] magic for High Sierra CD-ROM filesystem data is wrong

2010-08-19 Thread C Snover
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file

The entry for High Sierra CD-ROM filesystem data references the wrong
location for the magic bytes.

It is currently:

32776 stringCDROM High Sierra CD-ROM filesystem data

It should be:

32777 stringCDROM High Sierra CD-ROM filesystem data

You may confirm this by looking at the behaviour of util-
linux-2.17.2/shlibs/blkid/src/superblocks/iso9660.c:149 which seeks to
32 * 1024 + 9 for the magic string CDROM.

[Bug 146859] Re: No dri (and therefore no compiz) for virtual screen greater than 2048x2048

2009-05-06 Thread C Snover
I registered for this bug because of this problem on a X4500, which
certainly does support larger textures but is artificially limited to
2048×2048. So this is still a problem for people with i965 and newer
cards that do support large textures. See my comment #51.

[Bug 272699] Re: [i965] X3100 Plasma Desktop gets invalidated with short regular line corruption unless Composite is disabled

2009-02-28 Thread C Snover
Bryce,

Upstream is asking for testing with UXA, but from what I can tell, UXA
doesn’t exist until driver version 2.5.0 (and that version was pretty
bad the last time I tried it from the intel-gfx-testing PPA). Is it
possible to get a backported 2.6.0 driver for use with intrepid, or
would you recommend that I just try running a Jaunty livecd?

Let me know,

[Bug 333008] Re: X server terminated unexpectedly when playing fullscreen video after updating to KDE 4.2

2009-02-26 Thread C Snover
This happened also when trying to play a video using mplayer-plugin in
Opera. It’s becoming a major nuisance, not just because I’m losing data
when X spontaneously dies, but also because a lot of the processes that
were attached to the dead X server remain running and can only be
removed with a kill -9.

2009-02-23 Thread C Snover
I can’t use a blank xorg.conf in any practical manner because:
1. Bugs in the intel driver prevent my VGA monitor from having its DDC
information read properly
2. Bugs in the intel driver cause a third monitor device to appear that
commingles with the VGA device
3. Virtual display size needs to be set manually since the default values are
too small for my monitor placement (2048×2048)
4. Bugs in the KDE monitor configuration panel do not allow monitor positioning
to be set from there (this may be fixed in KDE 4.2; I have not tried it because
using the configuration panel in the past has caused the hardware to get in a
bad state where it sends bad signals and I have to reboot to get video output
again)

[Bug 315542] Re: X hangs on ubuntu 8.1 intrepid laptop

2009-01-17 Thread C Snover
I just experienced this issue on a Q45 running Intrepid. Xorg locked up
just after receiving a message in Pidgin, before the message displayed.
Got a bunch of

[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

in Xorg.0.log. Eventually the mieqEnequeue messages stopped and it just
spun with EQ overflowing. Killing Xorg turned it into a zombie process.
I had to log in using SSH and reboot the machine that way. The video was
locked up, and graphics corruption occurred during the shutdown process.
lspci -vvnn and Xorg.0.log to follow...

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-16 Thread C Snover
The 'correct' way to downgrade a single package and its dependencies is
aptitude install packagename=version, eg. aptitude install xserver-
xorg-video-intel=2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10. Doing what Pablo Marchant suggested
will probably end up uninstalling a lot of other stuff that you do not
want to remove.

I am curious which backports repository is being used, exactly, and what
driver version is being installed, since I have always enabled the
intrepid-backports repository and the latest offered driver version is
still 2.4.1-1ubuntu10, which has horrendous performance, at least on
Q45.

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-09 Thread C Snover
Bryce—

My apologies for adding to an already long bug, but I do have a comment
regarding your last post. I'm hoping that you can help me decide where
to start with new, more specific bug reports, but also I want to provide
some perspective about why this is harder than it seems.

The behaviour reported with glxgears's low fps is not exclusive to
glxgears; it just happens to be the best way I (and presumably many
others) know of getting a reasonable framerate number that's consistent
relative to other systems running the same hardware. Granted, it is not
a good exhaustive test of video performance, but as a do we have a
problem here benchmark, it seems to do a good job illustrating the
dramatic difference between different software versions (especially
since other 3D benchmarks seem to be basically unusable at this point,
at least on my system).

This performance problem is not exclusive to glxgears reporting lower
than expected framerates; it also occurs when playing a video with
mplayer, or using a visualiser in amarok, or displaying pages in Firefox
with lots of animation, or running a 2D or 3D DirectX application in
wine, or.. well, basically anything to do with writing to the screen.
Trying to run more than one application that updates the screen at
regular intervals grinds things to a halt very very quickly. (For
example, I can only watch videos in mplayer if Amarok has all of its
windows closed. Even if Amarok's windows are in the background, or
minimised, or if Amarok is paused and not doing anything, playback in
mplayer will still be jerky until the windows are closed completely.)

It's challenging to split out the problem into different components in
part because it is so pervasive throughout the system, which is why I
think that we've ended up with this huge monolithic performance is bad
bug. 2D performance is slow, 3D performance is slow... everything is
just extremely, extremely slow, and anyone with an Intel video chipset
is severely affected by this problem.

I would like to do whatever I can to form reasonable, reduced, and
reproducible bug reports. I am just at a bit of a loss as to where to
start because there's no specific place where I can go this works OK,
but this doesn't. Nothing works. It's all slow. Throw a stone and
you'll hit something that isn't performing as it should. So, if you can
tell me what you think would work well as a test report that can be sent
upstream easily, let me know and I'll write it. I just personally feel a
little overwhelmed with the amount of brokenness to try to start picking
apart all the different issues and choosing the best one to report (and
if I tried to report them all, I'd probably be here until next year).

Regards,

[Bug 272699] Re: Desktop gets scattered with ugly random memory

2008-12-21 Thread C Snover
Tested provided updated drivers, problem still exists here (Q45 chipset,
X4500, intrepid). It's worth noting the desktop does not get corrupted
with Desktop Effects turned on (in Kubuntu), but corruption still occurs
on the login page as well as when windows are brought back from
minimisation or new windows are created. Also, 3D performance is even
more abysmal (300fps in glxgears when running nothing else, down from a
still extremely abysmal but not quite as bad 700fps in the current
release driver), but that's another bug.

2008-12-21 Thread C Snover
If it's at all useful, I can also confirm that the debs from the edge

up hard; I tried rebooting the system with ctrl+alt+del, and it seemed
to worked, but after rebooting my monitors received no signal and went

[Bug 307253] [NEW] Windows larger than GL maximum texture size (2048) turn black / blank

2008-12-11 Thread C Snover
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this is an xserver-xorg-video-intel issue, or a kwin
issue, or some other issue. I also don't know if it is the same bug as
Bug #146298, or Bug #146859, or Bug#207770. Feel free to reclassify as
necessary.

I am running on an Intel DQ45CB (Intel Q45, integrated X4500 graphics)
with a dual-head display set up (1280x960+0+0, 1280x1024+1280+0), non-
Xinerama, in a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.10. The Virtual setting in
Xorg is 2560 1024 and this seems to all be fine. However, when a
window on the desktop is dragged out beyond 2048 pixels in width (which
corresponds to GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE according to glxinfo -l), it turns
black. Interestingly (or not), the shadow on the box continues to
display properly, and the compositing continues to work fine (eg. when I
drag the window, it still turns partially transparent): only the content
of the window disappears. The window stays black even if I drag it off-
screen so that less than 2048 columns of the window are actually being
drawn to the screen. This is not a huge issue but it is a little weird
to have window content disappear, and as monitor resolutions continue to
increase this is going to become a more significant issue.

Please let me know if additional information is needed.

[Bug 301764] Re: Xorg freeze with 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller

2008-12-10 Thread C Snover
I'm not sure if this is related to a problem I am having or not so I
will post here and hopefully someone can let me know if this is the same
bug or not.

I am running on a DQ45CB (Intel Q45 chipset) using the integrated X4500
video chipset in a single-screen, dual-monitor configuration
(1280x960+0+0, 1280x1024+1280+0), with an E8500 CPU and kernel 2.6.27-9.

In Firefox 3, if I select some text on a page and then drag it and
release within the Firefox window, normally an animation will occur
where the selection moves back to where its source was on the page, and
this will complete in under a second without blocking anything else.

However, after doing a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.10, when I drag and
then release a selection in this manner, my X session locks up with only
the mouse able to move. Looking at top (via remote SSH, since the
display is locked up) while this happens shows Xorg using 50% cpu and
kwin using another 50% cpu. Doing an strace on Xorg just output SIGALRM
and seemed to kill everything; doing an strace on kwin showed a ton of
writevs happening.

Eventually the animation will complete and then everything is back to
normal, but this is a severe problem since I have a bad habit of
selecting text while I'm reading it, and every time I accidentally do a
drag the system is unusable for about 60 seconds until it recovers.

So, same problem, or different problem?

[Bug 295781] Re: logs (syslog, messages, kern.log) flooded on new 8.10 installation - no wlan

2008-12-09 Thread C Snover
I can confirm this problem. Running 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20
22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux on an Intel DQ45CB (Intel Q45).
Disabling HPET in the BIOS fixes the problem, but it would be good if it
worked with HPET enabled too. ;)

did see Failed to load XPCOM component errors after its first
installation (which led me to this bug), but not any time after that.

[Bug 47631] Re: Quanta crash while editing PHP file

2008-01-23 Thread C Snover
This crash persists in Quanta 3.5.6 (Ubuntu 7.04) editing a PHP file,
which is stored on an NFS share. I've attached the PHP file I was
editing, but essentially anything from dotProject seems to trigger it.
The moments when the software crashes are random but it seems to occur
more often when I alt+tab away in the middle of editing. This is really
starting to get on my nerves since I'm constantly having to redo my work
;)

[Bug 35385] Re: Some portions of Smarty are broken in PHP = 5.1.2

The latest version of Smarty is packaged for Edgy. I installed this
package to Dapper without any problems. I would strongly recommend that
this package be introduced to dapper-backports or into the main dapper
universe repository since there are several critical fixes that were
made between 2.6.11 and 2.6.12+.

[Bug 52179] Re: setTimeout with low delay values don't fire correctly in Dapper Firefox

2006-08-20 Thread C Snover
I'm almost certain it's a problem with the x86_64 build but I don't
really have any way of figuring this out on my own. Would an strace or
other such thing help?

** Description changed:

  In the Ubuntu Firefox build (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB;
  rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060608 Ubuntu/dapper-security Firefox/1.5.0.4),
setTimeout/setInterval with low delays (50ms?) end up firing extremely
slowly. This does NOT occur in the official mozilla.org build of
  Firefox.

The following pages exhibit this behaviour:

  http://slashdot.org
Click on one of the slider menus, it will move down a few pixels and then
hang.

  http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/default.aspx
The header images should fade from one to another smoothly, but they only
start fading and then the fade becomes very jerky and slow.

- News ticker in upper-right corner starts sliding and then becomes very jerky
and slow just like the MSDN page.

animation will often lock up right in the middle. This does not occur using the
exact same Firefox user profile with the official Firefox build.

[Bug 56189] Configure kweather window is blank

2006-08-12 Thread C Snover
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kweather

Running Dapper 6.06 AMD64 and kweather 3.5.2-0ubuntu3.

1. Installed kweather from UK dapper/main repository for the first time.
2. Added applet to kicker.
3. Configure window automatically appeared.

Expected result: Configuration options for kweather.
Actual result: Configure window is blank, and says Empty page at the top.

I get the same result right-clicking on the applet in kicker and
choosing Configure kweather This makes kweather unusable, since I
can't set it up.

[Bug 51423] Re: Audigy 2 input problems (low volume, not all inputs work)

2006-07-30 Thread C Snover
A patch has been provided upstream but I am unable to get it to compile.
If someone else could take a whack at it, that would be great. (Please?)
I'd be more than happy to act as a liaison between the Ubuntu community
and the ALSA patch provider with regards to this issue.

Also, the patch appears to be incomplete, as it only addresses one
revision of the Audigy2. You may therefore need to manually patch your
sources if, like me, you don't own the revision that this patch
addresses. Fortunately, it is a single line add, though I don't know if
it's portable throughout the entire Audigy2 series.

Regards,

[Bug 54413] Keep runs every hour instead of at the specified backup interval

Public bug reported:

My settings:

Backup after 5 days (or 1 day, or 2 days, doesn't seem to matter)

It is backing up over a network share to an NFS filesystem.

Instead of backing up every 5 days as specified, keep is backing up

by the author: http://www.kde-

[Bug 51423] Audigy 2 input problems (low volume, not all inputs work)

2006-06-30 Thread C Snover
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu there are several bugs that prevent Audigy 2/4 sound cards
from being used for audio input. The card I have to test is an Audigy 2
ZS Platinum Pro (which is identical to the Audigy 4 Pro with the
exception of the DAC).

1. Input levels are way too low, even when all inputs are set to 100% in
alsamixer. There is a thread on the Ubuntu forums here
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=198626 that has
screenshots that illustrate the problem nicely.

2. The input Line In 2 does not work at all within Ubuntu.

3. The inputs are labeled incorrectly; Line In 1/Mic In, for example,
is labeled Aux 2 in alsamixer.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'alsa';
however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.
