[Bug 673366] Re: Default worker_connections too high for default system
“If you get into that much load, you should know how to configure your system to deal with it.” I don’t feel it is unreasonable to expect that the default OS settings won’t cause the disk to fill up (and, in doing so, cause other stuff to crash) when the default connection limit is reached. In our case, someone started hotlinking to a resource which caused an abnormally high number of connections; normally, this server is very low-load and doesn’t see more than 10 concurrent connections at any given time. What I am hearing from you is that it’s dangerous and unwise to assume that Ubuntu can provide sane settings out of the box, and it was foolish of me to not plan to receive 100 times the normal amount of traffic. While you are entitled to this opinion, it is not a position that I understand or agree with. If that’s not what you intended, I apologise for misunderstanding, and hope you can clarify. [Bug 673366] Re: Default worker_connections too high for default system
Oops, I made a typo in the original report. Sorry! The speed of log writing in our scenario (with about 1600 concurrent connections) was 17MB/sec, not 1MB/sec. As such, I still feel like this is a potential security issue, since it appears that it is trivial for even low levels of traffic to nginx to quickly exhaust a server’s disk space. A single, malicious attacker could easily cause unrelated applications to crash/corrupt data just by opening a couple thousand connections to a server and waiting for nginx to fill up the disk. If the speed of the log writing increases with the number of connection attempts (1 alert per connection), fewer than 4000 connections could cause 100MB/s of log data to be written, resulting in disk space exhaustion on an 80GB disk in under 14 minutes. In our case, with 1600 connections, disk space would have run out in about 75 minutes if we hadn’t managed to catch it quickly. -- Default worker_connections too high for default system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/673366 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can’t use a blank xorg.conf in any practical manner because: 1. Bugs in the intel driver prevent my VGA monitor from having its DDC information read properly 2. Bugs in the intel driver cause a third monitor device to appear that commingles with the VGA device 3. Virtual display size needs to be set manually since the default values are too small for my monitor placement (2048×2048) 4. Bugs in the KDE monitor configuration panel do not allow monitor positioning to be set from there (this may be fixed in KDE 4.2; I have not tried it because using the configuration panel in the past has caused the hardware to get in a bad state where it sends bad signals and I have to reboot to get video output again) ** Attachment added: xorg.conf http://launchpadlibrarian.net/23007521/xorg.conf -- X server terminated unexpectedly when playing fullscreen video after updating to KDE 4.2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/333008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel
The 'correct' way to downgrade a single package and its dependencies is aptitude install packagename=version, eg. aptitude install xserver- xorg-video-intel=2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10. Doing what Pablo Marchant suggested will probably end up uninstalling a lot of other stuff that you do not want to remove. I am curious which backports repository is being used, exactly, and what driver version is being installed, since I have always enabled the intrepid-backports repository and the latest offered driver version is still 2.4.1-1ubuntu10, which has horrendous performance, at least on Q45. -- [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel
Bryce— My apologies for adding to an already long bug, but I do have a comment regarding your last post. I'm hoping that you can help me decide where to start with new, more specific bug reports, but also I want to provide some perspective about why this is harder than it seems. The behaviour reported with glxgears's low fps is not exclusive to glxgears; it just happens to be the best way I (and presumably many others) know of getting a reasonable framerate number that's consistent relative to other systems running the same hardware. Granted, it is not a good exhaustive test of video performance, but as a do we have a problem here benchmark, it seems to do a good job illustrating the dramatic difference between different software versions (especially since other 3D benchmarks seem to be basically unusable at this point, at least on my system). This performance problem is not exclusive to glxgears reporting lower than expected framerates; it also occurs when playing a video with mplayer, or using a visualiser in amarok, or displaying pages in Firefox with lots of animation, or running a 2D or 3D DirectX application in wine, or.. well, basically anything to do with writing to the screen. Trying to run more than one application that updates the screen at regular intervals grinds things to a halt very very quickly. (For example, I can only watch videos in mplayer if Amarok has all of its windows closed. Even if Amarok's windows are in the background, or minimised, or if Amarok is paused and not doing anything, playback in mplayer will still be jerky until the windows are closed completely.) It's challenging to split out the problem into different components in part because it is so pervasive throughout the system, which is why I think that we've ended up with this huge monolithic performance is bad bug. 2D performance is slow, 3D performance is slow... everything is just extremely, extremely slow, and anyone with an Intel video chipset is severely affected by this problem. I would like to do whatever I can to form reasonable, reduced, and reproducible bug reports. I am just at a bit of a loss as to where to start because there's no specific place where I can go this works OK, but this doesn't. Nothing works. It's all slow. Throw a stone and you'll hit something that isn't performing as it should. So, if you can tell me what you think would work well as a test report that can be sent upstream easily, let me know and I'll write it. I just personally feel a little overwhelmed with the amount of brokenness to try to start picking apart all the different issues and choosing the best one to report (and if I tried to report them all, I'd probably be here until next year). Tested provided updated drivers, problem still exists here (Q45 chipset, X4500, intrepid). It's worth noting the desktop does not get corrupted with Desktop Effects turned on (in Kubuntu), but corruption still occurs on the login page as well as when windows are brought back from minimisation or new windows are created. This is not a huge issue but it is a little weird + to have window content disappear, and as monitor resolutions continue to + increase this is going to become a more significant issue. [Bug 301764] Re: Xorg freeze with 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller
I'm not sure if this is related to a problem I am having or not so I will post here and hopefully someone can let me know if this is the same bug or not. I am running on a DQ45CB (Intel Q45 chipset) using the integrated X4500 video chipset in a single-screen, dual-monitor configuration (1280x960+0+0, 1280x1024+1280+0), with an E8500 CPU and kernel 2.6.27-9. In Firefox 3, if I select some text on a page and then drag it and release within the Firefox window, normally an animation will occur where the selection moves back to where its source was on the page, and this will complete in under a second without blocking anything else. However, after doing a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.10, when I drag and then release a selection in this manner, my X session locks up with only the mouse able to move. Looking at top (via remote SSH, since the display is locked up) while this happens shows Xorg using 50% cpu and kwin using another 50% cpu. Doing an strace on Xorg just output SIGALRM and seemed to kill everything; doing an strace on kwin showed a ton of writevs happening. Eventually the animation will complete and then everything is back to normal, but this is a severe problem since I have a bad habit of selecting text while I'm reading it, and every time I accidentally do a drag the system is unusable for about 60 seconds until it recovers. So, same problem, or different problem? -- Xorg freeze with 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301764 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 295781] Re: logs (syslog, messages, kern.log) flooded on new 8.10 installation - no wlan
I can confirm this problem. Running 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux on an Intel DQ45CB (Intel Q45). [Bug 47631] Re: Quanta crash while editing PHP file
This crash persists in Quanta 3.5.6 (Ubuntu 7.04) editing a PHP file, which is stored on an NFS share. I've attached the PHP file I was editing, but essentially anything from dotProject seems to trigger it. [Bug 51423] Re: Audigy 2 input problems (low volume, not all inputs work)
A patch has been provided upstream but I am unable to get it to compile. If someone else could take a whack at it, that would be great. (Please?) I'd be more than happy to act as a liaison between the Ubuntu community and the ALSA patch provider with regards to this issue. Also, the patch appears to be incomplete, as it only addresses one revision of the Audigy2. You may therefore need to manually patch your sources if, like me, you don't own the revision that this patch addresses. Fortunately, it is a single line add, though I don't know if it's portable throughout the entire Audigy2 series. [Bug 51423] Audigy 2 input problems (low volume, not all inputs work)
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu there are several bugs that prevent Audigy 2/4 sound cards from being used for audio input. The card I have to test is an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro (which is identical to the Audigy 4 Pro with the exception of the DAC). 1. Input levels are way too low, even when all inputs are set to 100% in alsamixer. There is a thread on the Ubuntu forums here http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=198626 that has screenshots that illustrate the problem nicely. 2. The input Line In 2 does not work at all within Ubuntu. 3. The inputs are labeled incorrectly; Line In 1/Mic In, for example, is labeled Aux 2 in alsamixer.
