[Bug 494166] Re: [lucid] nvidia-glx can't work with new xorg 7.5

2009-12-29 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Alex, I would have expected you to post a question like that in
Launchpad Answers or Ubuntu forums. Usually the newest driver is the
best to use. That would be 185 in the official repository. It is all
up to you if you want to try unofficial ones. Just make sure you know
the risk and what you are doing.

[Bug 494166] Re: [lucid] nvidia-glx can't work with new xorg 7.5

2009-12-30 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
yes, you are correct. I just tried to run $ sudo apt-get install
nvidia-glx-185 and it wanted to remove xserver-xorg, meaning it still
doesn't work. I have all ati at home, but my work computer has nvidia.
I added the PPA at
https://edge.launchpad.net/~sevenmachines/+archive/nvidia and install
nvidia-graphics-drivers-195 and it works great for me. I didn't test
190.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-12-14 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Work around sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set
/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false does NOT work.

Sorry, user (username) is not allowed to execute '/usr/bin/gconftool-2
--set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false' as gdm on
(hostname).

But the line below does. So I edited the workaround above.

sudo su gdm -c gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
--type bool false

** Description changed:

  ==
  WORKAROUNDS
  ==
NOTE: These workarounds disable the system ready sound (the drums). They
will not disable the successful login and logout sounds. Go to Settings -
Sounds and set the sound theme to no sounds to disable these.

  1) Disable all sounds for the login screen via gconf
- $ sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool
false
+ $ sudo su gdm -c gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type
bool false

  -OR-

  2) Rename the system-ready.ogg sound file
  $ sudo mv -v /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/system-ready.ogg{,.disabled}

  ==
  BUG
  ==
When you log into Karmic using a Gnome session, you get a drum sound. There
are many situations where you need a silent boot process, but it appears that
this is impossible under Karmic.

In Jaunty and previous, you could configure gdm to log you in silently.
This configuration has been removed from Karmic. Even opening Sound
Preferences and choosing No sounds for Sound theme or disabling
window and button sounds does not prevent the login sound from
  occurring.

Users must have the ability to login silently.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-12-14 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I believe this is more important the just Wishlist. I have no problem
using a terminal, but the average user does. It is ridiculous for a
Ubuntu user to have to search the web just to simply stop the LOUD sound
gdm makes.

Ubuntu has higher standard then that.

2009-12-15 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I stated that above nvidia-glx-185 (173 96) but there isn't a 190.
180 is just a transitional package for nvidia-glx-185.

I think this is a big problem because I first found this problem just my
simply trying to enable Visual Effects in gnome. After enabling it
installed the nvidia-glx and uninstalled xserver-xorg without my
knowledge. I just rebooted and X wouldn't start. Then I messed around
until I figured out xserver-xorg was nolonger installed.

[Bug 505035] [NEW] firefox-3.5 causes kernel panics

2010-01-08 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Ever since the first firefox-3.5 package available in the Ubuntu
repository, it has caused me to have kernel panics. There has been quit
a few kernels since then and several firefox updates since then. I
thought I would give firefox another try during the crazy sparkfun
freeday, but within a few minutes my notebook was locked up with the
status lights flashing. I powered off and back on. I ran firefox-3.5
for a few more minutes and it happen again.

I saw Bug #453354 is similar, but the reporter only mentioned it
happening one time and it is set to invalid.

If there is some way I can give more debug information, please let me
know.

[Bug 496118] Re: gfxpayload is no longer working

2010-01-10 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
My home computers all use the open source Radeon driver. When gdm
starts tty1-6 automatically resize to the same resolution as the
xserver. This is nice since it essentially does what I was using
gfxpayload to do before. I don't know exactly what is apply the change
to tty1-6, but at least it works while gfxpayload isn't working.

I will post more info about my work computer with the nvidia gpu that is
giving me the biggest problem.

[Bug 257190] Re: Setting status to 'Hidden' changes status to 'Busy' instead

2009-08-31 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I use the lasted Karmic.

This is a very bad problem. As far as I know, Empathy is the only way I
can use cam and voice with google talk in linux. I usually just use the
gmail.com in a web browser to chat and select to be invisable, but I
open Empathy to voice or video chat. As soon as I open Empathy I see
this message on gmail.com's chat:

Oops! You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from
another client, device, or location that doesn't support invisibility.

Google talk's API is completely open source.
Why is MSN's hidden/invisible supported but not google talk?

Thanks for all the hard work on Empathy. I am astonish by the features
that do work. (cam/voice really great)

[Bug 257190] Re: Setting status to 'Hidden' changes status to 'Busy' instead

2009-08-31 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
When it come to Google Talk, telepathy-gabble seems to be the problem.

At Gnome's bugzilla the bug is marked Status: RESOLVED and
Resolution: NOTGNOME for Empathy.

Comment #5 @ http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=579650

Will Thompson 2009-08-14 14:43:21 UTC

XMPP has many, many different ways to become invisible. The subset that
telepathy-gabble supports does not include the one used by Google Talk. So
MC/Empathy/something falls back to busy.

Adding ServerAlias * to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf did work. Thank you,

This was missing from my Karmic server and Lucid test server. This
small change has caused a huge problem. This should either be well
documented or not removed from the default config file.

[Bug 328127] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon returns Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.

2009-09-13 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I have 5 computers running Karmic (2-x86 and 3-x86_64). I can't reproduce this
issue. To me it seems to be gone.
Did you upgrade to Karmic or do a fresh install, CPKS?

2010-07-14 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Public bug reported:

schroot fails to use the file /etc/schroot/chroot.d/karmic64.conf that I
created.

$ schroot -l
W: No chroots are defined in ‘/etc/schroot/schroot.conf’

The manual for schroot says config files in the /etc/schroot/chroot.d/
will be treated the same as /etc/schroot/schroot.conf .

$ man schroot

   /etc/schroot/chroot.d
Additional chroot definitions may be placed in files under this
directory. They are treated in exactly that same manner as
/etc/schroot/schroot.conf. Each file may contain one or more
chroot definitions. Note that the files in this directory fol‐
low the same naming rules as run-parts(8) when run with the
  --lsbsysinit option.

[Bug 570190] [NEW] pcmanfm desktop My Documents icon

2010-04-26 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmanfm

First of all the icon is labeled My Documents, but is goes to $HOME
directory not the Documents directory. It should be renamed or actually
go the $HOME/Documents directory.

Second, I would just like the ability to rename or delete the icon.
This is Ubuntu not M$. I should have the ability to remove or change
it.

Thank You For Your Time

the change could be simple. I will post a patch if I can figure it out.

[Bug 570190] Re: pcmanfm desktop My Documents icon

2010-04-26 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
While looking at the code, I could see the comment above where the My
Documents item is created. The comment reads /* Make an item for Home
dir */ not Documents. So I just changed the string to read Home
instead of My Documents in pcmanfm-0.5.2+svn20091029/src/desktop
/desktop-window.c

I haven't found a solution for the user to have the choice to remove the
icon yet.

[Bug 570190] Re: pcmanfm desktop My Documents icon

2010-04-26 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I also found that all the files listed below also have the text My Documents.

While looking I noticed the text Show \My Documents\ icon on desktop, so I
assume it is a future feature to be added so I see no need for me to pursue
finding a way to remove the icon.

STILL, this text should not read as My Documents. The link doesn't
take you to Documents directory. Also the name My Documents seems like
a sad attempt to name it the same as it is in Microsoft Windows.

[Bug 570281] [NEW] lxpanel is just blank white

2010-04-26 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxpanel

I don't use a display manager like lxdm. I just run startx when I want
lxde. On a fresh install or running startx on a new user account,
lxpanel is just blank white. I can't right click or do anything with
it.

I did find a way to get it working. You must first run lxdm ONLY ONE
TIME and login. After that lxpanel works fine. I can now run startx
from the terminal and lxpanel is fine. I guess lxde is setting or
adding some configuration that lxpanel needs to start.

Thank You For Your Time

[Bug 500151] Re: Ubuntu lucid amd64: isomaster *** buffer overflow detected ***: isomaster terminated

2010-02-18 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Andrew Smith's patch seems to work great. I have had no further
problems with isomaster after applying his patch.

I tried to first rebuild the package without his patch for a control and
still had the same problem.

I followed a guide online to rebuild an Ubuntu package. Below is what I
did.

sudo apt-get install build-essential fakeroot dpkg-dev
mkdir build
cd build
apt-get source isomaster
sudo apt-get build-dep isomaster
dpkg-source -x isomaster_1.3.7-1.dsc
cd isomaster-1.3.7/
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38389683/isomaster-fortify.patch
patch settings.c isomaster-fortify.patch
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b
cd ../
sudo dpkg -i isomaster_1.3.7-1_amd64.deb

[Bug 1257895] [NEW] Screen in Trusty breaks hardstatus string

2013-12-04 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Public bug reported:

I use hardstatus string with screen, but the newest version in Trusty
breaks it (Screen version 4.01.00devel (GNU) 2-May-06). It works fine
in Saucy (Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06) and earlier.

My .screenrc:
hardstatus alwayslastline
hardstatus string %{= kg}[ %{r}%H %{g}][%{b}%=
%{=kw}%?%-Lw%?%{r}(%{w}%n*%f %t%?(%u)%?%{r})%{b}%?%+Lw%?%?%= %{g}][%{y}%Y.%m.%d
%{w}%c:%s %{g}]

I'll attach images of it working in Saucy and broken in Trusty.

[Bug 1190696] Re: updatedb.mlocate uses 100% of the hdd IO. The OS is completely unusable.

2013-08-14 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
As of the last weekend, I updated all of my computers to pre-released
Saucy (13.10); not once have I had this problem. Sorry i'm no help at
pointing out what has changed from 13.04.

[Bug 771748] Re: Ubuntu does fsck on every start when using btrfs

2012-07-25 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
A quick work around if the bootup speed is really killing you and since btrfsck
doesn't do much yet.
Please realize this prevents mountall from running btrfsck and this is NOT a
fix.

You can move btrfsck somewhere where you can still use it:
$ sudo mv /sbin/btrfsck /usr/local/bin/

Then make a symbolic link to something like false:
$ sudo ln -s /bin/false /sbin/btrfsck

Also note that if btrfs-tools is updated or reinstalled, you have to do
this again.

Hopefully a full btrfsck will be out soon. Cross your fingers.
