[Bug 12301] Re: hsync/vrefresh not remembered; monitor off at boot is bad

2006-10-27 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
I can still experience it on Edgy. A quick comparison between the attached log
and the previous one shows that the details are pretty much unchanged.
Only the default hsync frequence changed, making Xorg choose 800x600 instead of
640x480.

[Bug 146356] Re: Filechooser create invalid bookmark via drag and drop.

2008-04-21 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
I can easily and reliably reproduce it on Hardy with almost any Gtk
application (Firefox and OpenOffice, too).

* Start eog, evince, or gedit
* Choose File - Open (Ctrl-O)
* From nautilus, drag any file on the Location text widget
* Get some error. With gedit or eog, the error message includes the file name.
For example: No images found in
'/home/danilo/file:/home/danilo/Examples/kubuntu-leaflet.png'.

Using libgtk2.0-0 version 2.12.9-3ubuntu2 with it_IT.UTF-8 locale.

[Bug 220294] [NEW] filechooser cannot open file dragged on Location

2008-04-21 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

Opening a file by bragging it on the Location text widget in the Gtk file
chooser results in an error, i.e. the application cannot find the file.
It looks like that, when using Drag and Drop, the file name gets converted to a
file:// URL, and that the file chooser is not able to understand URLs entered
in the Location text widget.

On Hardy, I can easily and reliably reproduce this issue Hardy with
almost any Gtk application (Firefox and OpenOffice, too):

* Start eog, evince, or gedit
* Choose File - Open (Ctrl-O)
* From nautilus, drag any file on the Location text widget
* Get some error. With gedit or eog, the error message includes the file name.
For example: No images found in
'/home/danilo/file:/home/danilo/Examples/kubuntu-leaflet.png'.

Using libgtk2.0-0 version 2.12.9-3ubuntu2 with it_IT.UTF-8 locale.
A video showing the issue is attached.

[Bug 262015] [NEW] apt cron.daily script sleeps a random amount of time twice

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

On Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10), apt's cron.daily script calls random_sleep()
twice, before running apt-get update: once just before setting the

By looking at the script, it appears that this bit of code has been
somehow duplicated:

[Bug 262015] Re: apt cron.daily script sleeps a random amount of time twice

2009-03-17 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
I'm ok with the random sleep to avoid hitting the mirrors too hard, but
you missed my point.

Debian's cron.daily/apt (from sid's apt 0.7.20.2) sleeps a random amount
of time, up to 30 minutes. Ubuntu's cron.daily/apt (from Jaunty's apt
0.7.20.2ubuntu2) sleeps *TWICE*. There is a bit of seemingly duplicated
code in the script.

Here is a snippet from Debian's apt 0.7.20.2. Note how random_sleep is called
only *ONCE*.

# sleep random amount of time to avoid hitting the
# mirrors at the same time
random_sleep

# check if we can access the cache
if ! apt-get check -q -q 2/dev/null; then
# wait random amount of time before retrying
random_sleep

Here is a snippet from Ubuntu's apt 0.7.20.2ubuntu2. Note how random_sleep is
called *TWICE*, both before and after checking the proxy settings in gconf.
Note also how the (duplicated) code performing the sleep and the cache check is
exactly the same: it looks like a patch adding the random sleep feature has
slipped in *TWICE*.

[Bug 262015] Re: apt cron.daily script sleeps a random amount of time twice

2009-03-17 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
As I see it, the cron script can either sleep and then check the proxy
settings and proceed with the update, or check the proxy settings, sleep
and then proceed with the update.

Yes, but it is a different issue. I believe the maintainers decided that
the benefits of not overloading the mirrors outweight the costs of
slightly delayed cron jobs.

[Bug 315409] [NEW] initramfs-tools hook script messes up /etc/udev/rules.d

2009-01-09 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

On Jaunty, the /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/dmsetup script from
dmsetup 1.02.27-4ubuntu1 fails to install
/etc/udev/rules.d/65-dmsetup.rules correctly in the initramfs: it
creates a file named /etc/udev/rules.d. I suspect this is caused by the
moving of /etc/udev/rules.d to /lib/udev/rules.d made by udev 136-1.

This also prevents other hooks (like /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/hooks/mdadm) from installing their rules causing the latter to
fail (for example, I noticed this bug because a system using mdadm's
software RAID failed to boot).

The fix is as simple as adding mkdir -p ${DESTDIR}/etc/udev/rules.d to
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/dmsetup, like I have done on my system
to get it booting smoothly again.

[Bug 457574] [NEW] [Hardy] evince prints random chars instead of text with a specific PDF file

2009-10-21 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Printing this file[1] from evince (using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy) results in a
document with only figures, secion titles and page titles. All the
normal text is missing and replaced by some random characters. Printing
with both CUPS's PDF printer and an actual printer results in the same
output.

Printing with gv works correctly. I am not sure if it is a bug in evince
or in poppler.

This bug is not present in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic; I have not tested either
8.10 Intrepid or 9.04 Jaunty.

2009-10-21 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
After further testing, it looks like a strange or subtly corrupted PDF
file. Karmic's ghostscript has trouble with it, too:

[Bug 487523] Re: TOSHIBA Satellite M70 (Intel 915GM) produces bad EDID causing large font sizes; needs quirk

2009-11-25 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Looking at Xorg.0.log, it seems that the
EDID_QUIRK_DETAILED_USE_MAXIMUM_SIZE quirk ('Detailed timing descriptors
have bogus size values, so just take the maximum size and use that.')
applies.

That quirk is already implemented in drm_edid.c both in the linus tree
and in the ubuntu tree, and in both cases it is used for monitor LPL,
0.

[Bug 158025] Re: Pdftk cannot work with non-ascii named files

2008-10-07 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
A simple but somewhat crude workaround would be replacing
JvNewStringLatin1 with JvNewStringUTF, which assumes UTF-8. This was
proposed for Debian bug #461169 (http://bugs.debian.org/461169), which
affects the update_info command.

I simply could not reproduce this anymore, neither with 2.6.26-5 (using
the same kernel which I showed the bug in the first place), nor with
2.6.27. I almost suspect a hardware-induced failure

[Bug 263746] [NEW] kobject: tried to init an uninitialized object when removing and re-inserting sd-mod

2008-09-01 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the Intrepid Alternate Install CD daily image (2008-09-01)
and I booted a machine to perform a clean install after re-partitioning
the disks and doing some testing/experimenting.

Unusual things happened when I unloaded the module sd-mod (modprobe -r
sd-mod): the disks powered down -- but I guess this was ok. Then, when I
reloaded the module (modprobe sd-mod), I got some oopses and a kernel
panic. The bug was reproducible after a reboot, and I saved the syslog.

Steps to reproduce:
* Boot from the Intrepid Alternate Install CD
* At partman's stage, Go Back and then switch to a console/open a shell
* modprobe -v -r sd-mod:
  rmmod /lib/modules/2.6.27-2-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/sd_mod.ko
  rmmod /lib/modules/2.6.27-2-generic/kernel/lib/crc-t10dif.ko

The usual noise made by the disk(s) powering down will be heard.

* modprobe -v sd-mod
  insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27-2-generic/kernel/lib/crc-t10dif.ko
  insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27-2-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/sd_mod.ko

The kernel will print kobject (f736d29c): tried to init an initialized
object, something is seriously wrong. and a stack trace. Possibly, it
will produce an oops and panic.

Just some background info: this machine has got two SATA hard disks and a VIA
chipset.
And another observation: if I unload the SATA module too (sata-via), nothing
bad happens when I reload sata-via/sd-mod: the disks simply power on again and
the kernel is perfectly happy.

[Bug 262417] [NEW] Kernel lockup while rebuilding two mdadm RAID arrays

2008-08-28 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

I have the following RAID configuration: md0 is a RAID1 array used as
the root file system, md1 is another RAID1 array used as swap.

= /proc/mdstat =
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
[raid10]
md1 : active raid1 sdb2[1]

md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1]
  23037056 blocks [2/1] [_U]

unused devices: none

I had added the missing devices to their arrays (respectively, sda5 to
md0 and sda6 to md1), triggering a spare rebuild for both arrays, and,
some minutes later, the system froze. The relevant section of
/var/log/messages is attached: unfortunately, the kernel dump is not
complete.

reproduce this anymore, not even with the 2.6.26 kernel.

I cannot reproduce this with the latest development release (Karmic

[Bug 219080] Re: Printing mupltiple pages per side with 'odd' or 'even' setting results in strange order

2008-12-16 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
** Summary changed:

- evince prints pages in a strange order
+ Printing mupltiple pages per side with 'odd' or 'even' setting results in
strange order

** Description changed:

+ [Summary was: evince prints pages in a strange order]
  Binary package hint: evince

I have to print out presentation slides for university and because they
don't contain much text and the fonts are big I want to print out
several pages on one sheet of paper.

I open the PDF in evince, go to Print, select print to file (I print out
the stuff at my university and I can only upload .ps files to them) and
  press print.

The resulting .ps file has a strange layout, like this:

(I know that is some bad ASCII art, but I think you get the idea.)

  -
  | 2 | 4 |
  -
  | 1 | 3 |
  -

What I obviously want is something like this:

  -
  | 1 | 2 |
  -
  | 3 | 4 |
  -

The problem is that you can't select the orientation of the paper.
Evince assumes that the sheet of paper is vertical, while it's actually
  horizontal.

[Bug 230333] Re: evince does not print certain documents

2008-12-16 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Printing a single page can take a really long time, but eventually
printing starts.

Evince hangs somewhere inside a cairo function called from
cairo_show_page, which is called by evince's
pdf_document_file_exporter_end_page. Backtrace shown:

[Bug 800740] [NEW] [i915] Xorg freeze

2011-06-22 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug reported:

Xorg server freezes randomly after an upgrade to Natty.

I suspect this to be a duplicate of bug #740126. Most symptoms match:

 * Happens when the screensaver (blank screen) is active
 * The mouse cursor changes when moving it on different part of the screen, as
if applications get events anyway (see comment #53 on bug #740126)

It looks like it only happens after a suspend/resume, but I can not
confirm this yet.

I was able to switch to a console and gather some information, using
intel_gpu_dump and apport-bug $(pidof X).
