This failed - I had hope ... ;-)
Now I am trying a clean install with the gutsy beta. I added to #122645
after tribe 4 but my comments there where deleted. It could be related

FWIW:
I have installed Kubuntu on this machine (typing from the fresh install) with
the ALTERNATE installer. I told the installer to format the partitions.
The machine has an ASUS A8V mobo (see lspci abvove). It has an old IDE drive in
it and a big, fast SAMSUNG SATA drive.

I can confirm this with Gutsy Kubuntu Tribe 5
Trying to format /dev/sda7 hangs the installer at 5% (formatting
/dev/sda7).
I can format via qtparted or mkfs.xfs but since the installer wants to
format the partition when installing / on it pre-formatting is no help
...

no change with the daily build black screen
I CAN start in with Displayport in VESA-mode. BUT: the resolution there is
1680x1050 - no use for my 1920x1200 monitor ...
Better VESA digital than analog INTEL me thinks. But for the native resolution
of my monitor there is ONLY analog

I mixed up the repositories - now I have enabled your ppa again and DP
is kind of working: artefacts, moving a window (e.g. Firefox with
running video) makes the xserver restart
I cleaned my xorg.conf:

For me the workaorund WITHOUT my patch works finally.
Be very careful when/from where/what to include in the initrd!
I wish (already on the list) there were a setup option to encrypt the
filesystem like in Debian etch.
Notebooks without HD-encryption ( / is essential IMO ) are a desaster

I did install the package - it did not break anything. Booting as
before.
I can not confirm that it improved things since I patched my cryptsetup-
scripts manually before and disabled splash.

The workaround I found good at the time (see above) does not work with
lucid anymore.
After skimming through the xrandr-links in this bugreport I tried some
other workarounds.
This is what helps me under Kubuntu 10.04:
xrandr --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200
added as a desktop entry under
lucid-updates
my catch all entry in /etc/apt/sources.list:

I am finally able to print (@tomlaunch: hplip 3.19.2)!
My solution: I put my venerable G85 to pasture (the new ink cartridges did not
work either - this seems to be a hardware problem) and replaced it with an
Officejet Pro 8500.
Works now for all my PCs via Ethernet, printouts are better

Yeah! Flipping the switch - again - makes the device scan
It even tried to print - what came out resembles a testpage and I could
print the subject of an email from KMail ...
The things changed: I installed the ubuntu5.1 version of Ghostscript
8.71 from lucid-updates.
So there is hope for 5.2
