X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI X300
i can't understand why you close this bug.. when tons and tons of people
confirmed a problem of freeze with the open drivers and ATI cards, also
in Hardy (personally I can only confirm it in 7.10).
the most recent would be comment #146, up-to-date as of 2008-02-21, on
hardy.
and of course who
Wait, so.. because the 3D bling-bling desktop
doesn't work, you're recommending people use Windows XP?
sorry, but you didn't read the comments properly. at least for me (radeon
7000/VE, r100), the computer freezes after 20min-1 hour of use even when I
don't use compiz nor any other 3d
try using closed driver. I'm using it right now (because of this bug),
and they are working good.
for what it's worth, even if i wanted to use the closed source driver (and i'd
rather use an outdated ubuntu), i can't because my graphics card is not
supported anymore by that driver.
As hardy
FWIW, i was also out of the room when it froze without compiz.
one possibility could be a 3d screensaver being initialized and freezing the
box trying to display some 3d... note that there was no trace of screensaver on
my desktop at all... but that would not be impossible, I guess. Most of the
using the version 6.6 as suggested by _merou stopped the freezes i had. in my
case (7000/VE) I even had freezes without any 3d going on. I think it was also
freezing when doing Xv. not sure. anyway... going to 6.6 fixed the problem.
I didn't try compiz though.
If others want to try, you can get
