I just started experiencing this today after updating. Opening gnome-
terminal and running unity --replace results in compiz disappearing
completely and the following messages spewed to terminal:

Rerunning ldconfig did not result in any extra libraries being added to
the list (so the important ones are still missing).
I dug around in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ and /etc/alternatives/ and found that

-linux-gnu_gl_conf -
Uninstalling fglrx leaves a bad symlink behind from
/etc/alternatives/x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf

which no longer exists. ldconfig cannot find some critical libraries, so
nothing loads.
As a workaround, you can run:
