Sorry, I forgot to include in my comment #25:
On subsequent boots, I still get status 256. It's only on the FIRST
boot after booting from the memory stick, that it doesn't appear.

I am also the initiator of bug #580755, Log-in screen locks up.
The lock-up is actually that the keyboard mouse are not enabled, so I
can't proceed with booting.
Is it possible that these are not started during the upstart process?

I converted two systems that had this problem to an Ubuntu 10.04 derivative,
Linux Mint 9, and both systems work perfectly. This could provide a clue to
the source of the problem, and could provide an emergency solution to people
like Don who are in a tough situation and must have a working
for a fair while). But eventually it disappeared, the desktop was
displayed.
However, the mouse keyboard were locked, so I could not use the PC.

Removed the quiet splash options from the grub config and rebooted.

rc2 in the PPA (1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu12.1~rc2ppa3) appears to have already
fixed the segfault.
No segfaults in 3 days and I've applied some high disk I/O to the
machine.
I can't test rc4 right away b/c rc2 is on a production machine. Once I
can declare another maintenance window and reboot

more stable kvm package.

I'm running jaunty with everything up-to-date.
I was experiencing segfaults similar to those described in this ticket
when disk I/O was high. For example, when dd'ing a raw image file to an
LVM volume, when the image was about 60G, caused several kvm processes
to crash.
I was able to reproduce

I upgraded to 9.04 from 8.10 on 30/05/09; I waited until then, as I had
the idea that any bugs would have been fixed...
I followed the steps as mentioned by LeeWells, but I had the same result
as kit. So I uninstalled pulseaudio, Myth seems OK now.

I get a similar issue with Inkscape files (on Hardy). Double-clicking in
Nautilus runs Inkscape, but selecting the same file from Places-Recent
Documents runs Eye of Gnome.
