[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2022-06-05 Thread Gerry
Apologies Uriel Tunn for not getting back to you on your message #74.
I must not have received the email notification at the time.

Anyway, i tried what you suggested and no luck...

e4310:~$ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
e4310:~$ card=0
e4310:~$ dev=7
e4310:~$ pulseaudio --kill
e4310:~$ sudo rm $HOME/.config/pulse/*
e4310:~$ sleep 2
e4310:~$ wait
e4310:~$ pulseaudio --start
e4310:~$ pacmd load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:$card,$dev
e4310:~$ pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.hw_${card}_${dev}
Sink alsa_output.hw_0_7 does not exist.
e4310:~$ pacmd set-sink-volume alsa_output.hw_${card}_${dev} 35000
No sink found by this name or index.

Tried with the latest Ubuntu 22.04 and Fedora 36 and same situation,
HDMI is not recognised for sound, but getting pictures is fine -> so nothing
wrong with the HDMI cable to the monitor.
Thankfully I've just connected a set of external speakers using the 3.5mm jack
and just accepted sound across hdmi will not work with kernel later than 4.15.

There are some serious bugs in incron.

It should probably be deprecated and removed from the repos for security

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2021-08-01 Thread Gerry
Thanks for the feedback Uriel,
but on the Intel Graphics card, after i copy in that program from here
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032811/ubuntu-18-04-no-hdmi-audio-with-amd-radeon-hd-7870/1207919#1207919)
 and then run $ $HOME/bin/fixHDMIaudio &
It says .
[1] 1967

Then returns
"Sink alsa_output.hw__ does not exist.
No sink found by this name or index."

As you say, a cheap video card might be the solution in the long term
:-)

It's frustrating, but at least i can continue to use LMDE 4 using the
4.18.19 kernel for the minute though

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2021-07-30 Thread Gerry
Thanks Uriel Tunn, but that fix didn't work for me.

So, I followed your advice and tried an upgrande to another distro.
I tried...
-> Linux Mint 20.2 Uma (Kernel 5.11)
-> MX Linux 19.4.1
-> Manjaro xfce 21.0.7-210614 (Kernel 5.10)
-> Endeavour-2021.04.17 (Kernel 5.11)
-> Pop_OS_21.04_amd64
-> Fedora_Workstation_Live_x86_64_34-1.2
-> Ubuntu 21.04 desktop amd64 (Kernel 5.11)
-> Ubuntu 18.04 desktop amd64 (Kernel 5.4.0-42-generic)

None of the above work with a DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter.

HOWEVER, seeing as i had just installed Ubuntu 18.04, I started to
install some kernels on that build

Sure as hell
4.15.0-041500-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter
listed as an options in Sound Settings
4.18.0-041800-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter
listed as an options in Sound Settings
4.18.10-041810-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter
listed as an options in Sound Settings
4.18.16-041816-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter
listed as an options in Sound Settings
4.18.19-041819-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter
listed as an options in Sound Settings

THEN
4.18.20-041820-generic - would not even boot with Ubuntu - had to use the
recovery kernel option, and when i got into the main screen, i checked the
sound settings, and sure as hell neither DVI/HMDI nor Display Port/HDMI were
listed anymore!

Next I checked
4.19.0-041900-generic - while this didn't give any problems booting, when i got
into the main screen, i checked the sound settings, neither DVI/HMDI nor
Display Port/HDMI were listed anymore.

So, yes, whatever happened in 4.18.20-041820 has broke the sound for my
HDMI adapters and never been fixed since.

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2021-07-29 Thread Gerry
Thinking it was something to do with my DVi-HDMI adapter cable
I went out and purchased a Display Port-HDMI adapter cable,
but it's the exact same thing - no hdmi recognised with newer kernel.

On LMDE, with two kernels installed.

If i boot up with the kernel 4.15.0-041500-generic everything is fine - no
issues with either the DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter cable being
recognised
aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

On the very same computer, boot up with any newer kernel, for example my second
kernel is 5.10.0.0.bpo.4-amd64 the kernel does not pick up the adapter. All i
get is:

aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Absolutely nothing else has changed - only the kernel. If i could build the
current kernel but add in the sound module of 4.15.0-041500-generic i would,
but there are no instructions on how to do that :-( Or can anyone point me to
how it could be done? I don't mind building the kernel from source etc
Thanks

[Bug 1885344] Re: nvidia-340 340.108-0ubuntu2: nvidia-340 kernel module failed to build (oem 5.6 kernel)

2021-01-24 Thread Gerry Matte
I have also been getting this error as soon as my system updated from
Kernel 5.4.0-58-generic x86_64 bits to Kernel 5.8.0-38-generic x86_64
bits.

Booting from the 5.8 kernel stops with a black screen and a blinking
cursor. Pressing the PC power off switch performs a power off.

Rebooting with the 5.4 kernel using the Grub Advanced options allows me
to login normally although shortly after an error report appears.

Additional Info is attached.

I plan to using try using PPA kelebek333/nvidia-legacy with my ancient GT215M
[GeForce GT 250M].
Thank you Andrea (andrea-amoroso81).

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2020-09-03 Thread Gerry
Yes, I should have updated this.
I tried about 6-7 kernels all between 4.15 and 4.18.19 (i think, or some high
number like that), all of them worked across Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, and
Debian, and I think it was Manjaro. 100% no audio issues.

But once i tried the 4.19 kernel (or higher, I tried about 8 kernels
such as 4.19.0, 5.10, 5.2, 5.5, 5.5, 5.7, 5.8 etc), no luck across any
distribution!

So something definitely changed in the audio settings in the move from
the last kernel build in the 4.18 build and the 4.19 series and higher.

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2020-07-10 Thread Gerry
In kernel 4.18, there are 4 folders
pcm0c
pcm0p
pcm3p
pcm7p

the info file in the last folder pcm7p, reads
card: 0
device: 7
subdevice: 0
stream: PLAYBACK
id: HDMI 1
name: HDMI 1
subname: subdevice #0
class: 0
subclass: 0
subdevices_count: 1
subdevices_avail: 1

and there are 5 files now
codec#0, codec#3, eld#3.0, eld#3.1 and id.
(see the codec#3 attached)

eld#3.0 just says
monitor_present 0
eld_valid 0

Attached is the eld#3.1 file

I tried copying the missing files/folders from the launch under 4.18 to
the launch under 5.6 kernel but keep being told there is not enough room
- which makes little sense, the files/folders are tiny, and I've plenty
of space.

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2020-07-10 Thread Gerry
I had a look at my /proc/asound/card0 folder, and there are big
differences between the non-working 5.6 kernel and the working 4.18
kernel.

In Kernel 5.6, in the folder /proc/asound/card0
there are 2 only folders, and 3 files.

Folders:
pcm0c
pcm0p

Both folders refer to the analog, for example the info file in the
second reads

card: 0
device: 0
subdevice: 0

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2020-07-10 Thread Gerry
I should add that under 4.18.15-041815, the command "aplay -l" returns

**List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevices #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevices #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevices #0: subdevice #0

and under 5.6.0-0.bpo.2, the command "aplay -l" returns

**List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevices #0: subdevice #0

that's all!!

2020-07-10 Thread Gerry
I have an Intel (Ironlake) CoreI5 & Integrated Graphics
I have no HDMI listed in Sound

This is happening on:

- Debian Sid

Everything is fine on:
kernel 4.18.15-041815-generic x86_64
Sound server ALSA version: k4.18.15-041815-generic

But anything later, even trying recent kernels does not fix this issue

[Bug 1865996] [NEW] GDM Theme Inconsistant Init Login vs Screen Lock

2020-03-04 Thread gerry dublin
Public bug reported:

The initial login theme of first login at machine startup is completely
different (looks much older) than the theme used for when the machine is

Ideally the same theme is used in both circumstances for consistency.

[Bug 1837290] [NEW] gpodder 3.10.7 HTTPS youtube broken, need 3.10.9

2019-07-20 Thread gerry dublin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.04 ships with gpodder version 3.10.7.
This version doesn't work with youtube https.
A patch has been posted that fixes this in the latest version 3.10.9.
The releases since 3.10.7 have just been bug fix releases.

Is it possible to have the version of gpodder bumped up to version 3.10.7?
Youtube not working breaks a lot of functionality of the program.

Thank you for all your work

[Bug 1823490] Re: Incron causes defunct processes

2019-04-06 Thread Gerry
Given how this package is not getting much love, I switched to using systemd's
systemd.path functionality.
Very briefly:

root@veeta:/etc/systemd/system>cat gsker-temptrax.path
[Path]
PathChanged= /var/www/gsker/weather/temptrax.log
[Install]
WantedBy=default.target

root@veeta:/etc/systemd/system>cat gsker-temptrax.service
[Service]
Type=oneshot
User=gsker
ExecStart= /home/gsker/weather/temptrax/plotrun.sh

root@veeta:/etc/systemd/system>systemctl daemon-reload
root@veeta:/etc/systemd/system>systemctl enable gsker-temptrax.path

[Bug 1823490] Re: Incron causes defunct processes

2019-04-06 Thread Gerry
Okay I see the git repo that this descends from,
https://github.com/ar-/incron, has this fix and several others. And I
see that the upstream is the debian package. How do we go about getting
the whole chain updated?

This bug was fixed back in Oct of 2017.

[Bug 1823490] [NEW] Incron causes defunct processes

2019-04-06 Thread Gerry
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Disco Dingo (development branch)
Release:19.04
ii incron 0.5.12-1 amd64cron-like daemon which handles
filesystem events

gsker@veeta:~>incrontab -l
/home/gsker/tmp/incrontest/testfile.txt IN_CLOSE_WRITE
/home/gsker/tmp/incrontest/incron.sh $# $%

gsker@veeta:~>ps -ef | grep incron
root 5558 1 0 14:47 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/incrond
gsker 6366 5558 0 14:52 ?00:00:00 [incron.sh]
gsker 6371 6190 0 14:52 pts/400:00:00 tail -f incrontest.log
gsker 6386 5558 0 14:52 ?00:00:00 [incron.sh]
gsker 6390 5558 0 14:52 ?00:00:00 [incron.sh]

The incron works, but I end up with hundreds of defunct processes.

This bug report for RedHat implies a fix:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1656939

I grabbed the incrond executable from the x86_64 rpm here:
  https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1235814

It appears to be working correctly.

[Bug 1797920] Re: sweethome3d does not start in ubuntu 18.10 cosmic

2018-12-12 Thread Gerry
The sweethome3e you get from the snap is version 5.7.

To use the 6.0 version use:

snap refresh --channel edge sweethome3d-homedesign

The reason it works is probably because it includes the Oracle Java JRE.

[Bug 1786304] [NEW] Complete reinstall from cd over bad upgrade failed

2018-08-09 Thread Gerry Smith
Public bug reported:

Having waited until 08Aug18 to upgrade from 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS I
forced an upgrade. There were a lot of errors which seemed to result
from network interface not working and so no contact with mirror (at

already used for installation of 18.04LTS on an old laptop some weeks

[Bug 1661295] Re: [vmware] mir 0.26 failing with nested server in protobuf when bringing up NestedDisplay [CHECK failed: (index) >= (0)]

2018-02-15 Thread Gerry Boland
Ok, VMWare is setting the current crtc mode at a generic 800x600, which isn't
in the list of modes for the connected display. Only approach I see is to
compare the mode name with "preferred", for which I see prior art:

[Bug 1661295] Re: [vmware] mir 0.26 failing with nested server in protobuf when bringing up NestedDisplay [CHECK failed: (index) >= (0)]

2018-02-14 Thread Gerry Boland
Problem is that the "real" KMS platform is unable to determine the
current mode when running on VMware, leaving the current_mode_index at
an invalid value of UINTMAX, which is being passed through to the nested
platform.

[Bug 1700609] Re: Kernel Oops. GoodIX touchscreen not working

2017-06-26 Thread Gerry Dubois
The hardware is a PIPo X9 Intel Baytrail device. My imediate problem is the
GoodIDX touch screen is not usable.
[5.734923] Goodix-TS: probe of i2c-GDIX1001:01 failed with error -22

A little bit of history. I have 9 of these devices and 7 of them are
operational. AFAICT the major difference between the working and non-
working boxes is that the on the working ones I booting into windows
first before installing Ubuntu. The failed ones I bypassed the initial
Windows setup and booted the Ubuntu installer directly. I've reproduced
this crash on the 17.04 Server install with the x19, x21 and x22 kernels
as well as the desktop install. Another data point is I compiled up and
ran the bleeding edge Linux Kernel 4.12 RC6 and it fails the same way.
My immediate problem is getting the GoodIDX touch screen to work. See
the dmegs log above

[Bug 1675448] Re: Unity 8 doesn't allow multiple Mir connections from an application instance

2017-04-05 Thread Gerry Boland
Relevant info to reproduce:

Saviq, the first way to test the multiple-connection situation
would probably be to create a custom .desktop file that removes
GDK_BACKEND from the app's environment, which will force it to autoprobe
and use Mir instead

[Bug 1677257] Re: Goodix Touchscreen not working

2017-04-03 Thread Gerry Dubois
John,
Good news, I now have a working system. Thanks for all your help. While I have
your attention would you mind weighing in on the patchwork patch I referenced
above. Do you think it would be a good idea to make those changes to the
goodix.c code from 4.4.0.

[Bug 1677257] Re: Goodix Touchscreen not working

2017-03-31 Thread Gerry Dubois
I had a side conversation with the guy who recently patched the goodix.c driver
( referred to above). He pointed me at
Error -121 is -EREMOTEIO.
I guess you use the DesignWare I2C driver (for Bay Trail), the only occurence
of that is in drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-designware-core.c.
A bit above it there's a dev_dbg, change it to dev_err and you should start to
see errors in dmesg.
In the attached logs there are errors coming from this driver. I'm build a
kernel now with the debug stuff turned on to see what I can see.

Turning on input event printing[1], when using Ctrl+Alt+F1 switching

from Mir to Unity8, while on VT1:

and actually, switching back to Unity8's VT, the key repeat events don't stop!

[Bug 1238838] Re: [qpa] QUbuntuIntegration requests screen info which open mir client connection with shell - even if client does not open window

2017-03-13 Thread Gerry Boland
That's a good question.

I think that QGuiApplication assumes it will be creating a window at
some stage, so will connect to the display server in advance. If you
know for sure you're not going to create a window, QCoreApplication
should be used instead.

To test this hypothesis, I tried another platform: X11 itself. I ran
your test app without a valid X running (actually I faked it by pointing
it to a non-existing X socket):

DISPLAY=:1 QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./test

and got a very similar crash: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/24171497/

So I think this is behaving as expected. If you disagree, please re-open this
bug and say why. I'd definitely like to know what your use-case is.

Hey dinamic! Thanks for the bug!

Did this happen suddenly, or you never see shadows at all?

What GPU and driver are you using?

Could you provide a pastebin of the unity8.log file, ideally just after

I have Qt configured (in QtUbuntu/QtMir) to use multi-threaded GL
rendering, so we're probably hitting Nouveau's limitations here.

As workaround, I can add code to QtUbuntu/QtMir use single-threaded GL
for Nouveau.

If this is easily reproduced, can you try

initctl set-env --global QSG_RENDER_LOOP=basic

and see if everything is more stable? If so, the workaround should do
the trick

[Bug 1670670] Re: Unity8 pointer does not stay in sync with Qemu VM tablet input

2017-03-09 Thread Gerry Boland
Looking into QtMir, we're only using the relative mouse motion in our
calculation of the cursor position. We need that to implement the push-
against-screen-edge behaviour for a mouse.

We've not considered tablet input devices at all. I see Mir's associates
a device with each input event, so it possible for us to change
behaviour depending on the input device. Overall I don't knom enough to
speak intelligently about what we need to do, needs further
investigation on our side.

2017-03-08 Thread Gerry Boland

We had other use-cases where unity8 having control over mouse position
was useful. One example coming to mind is phone docked to an external
display, we wanted to limit the cursor to the external display only. And
we had a few other pie-in-the-sky design ideas which would be much
easier if unity8 had cursor control.

I still don't see why Mir can't just let Unity8 (a nested) position the
cursor (like it could, if it were a host server)!

And absolute vs relative. If we're doing it wrong, we can fix it.

[Bug 1669444] Re: [regression] OSK input shaping no longer works correctly

2017-03-07 Thread Gerry Boland
@vanvugt - yep it's not ideal. For phone/tablet, to make device rotation
animation as good as we could, was easiest to give the OSK a fullscreen
surface and have it rotate itself, letting application shine through in
the translucent area.

But that is certainly an area we can improve.

[Bug 1670681] [NEW] If OSK restarts, new OSK surface ignored by shell

2017-03-07 Thread Gerry Boland
Public bug reported:

(Probably need current state of silo 2481 to reproduce)

Running unity8, check OSK can come on screen. Dismiss it, then do:
stop maliit-server
start maliit-server

Then try to bring up the OSK again.

OSK surface does not come up, and unity8 log reports "Multiple Input
Method Surfaces created, removing the old one!" but it fails to work
anyway.

[Bug 1667001] Re: [amd] screen-unblanking seems to flicker backlight on/off 5 times before display resumes

2017-02-23 Thread Gerry Boland
Ok, with Alexandros' help I've dug a bit more.

On my hardware, I tear everything down and just run
sudo mir_demo_server_basic --arw-file
I can see clients ok.

I forked mir_demo_client_display_config to add extra bits:
https://code.launchpad.net/~gerboland/+git/display-configurator
which adds an "O" option to power off the display

When I run it, and hit "O", the display flickers 8 times and then stays
off (mir_power_mode_off)

If I hit "P" to turn it on again, nothing happens (mir_power_mode_on).
Applying the configuration appears to hang the client - I get no success
or fail response from Mir.

If I kill the client, Mir re-activates the display (flickering 8 times)

[Bug 1666902] [NEW] Enable screencast utilities

Public bug reported:

Peek is a utility to grab screencast to animated GIFs.

They have an open bug to add Mir support:
https://github.com/phw/peek/issues/39

Current mirscreencast util only works as root, due to Unity8 replacing
the renderer with its own custom one (which does not support
screenshotting yet). We need to get screencasting working for third
party applications running as the user.

Mediation of screencasting application is also needed - so user is aware
screencast in progress.

Here is what Qt is doing, on upload:

It saves & restores the alignment, and assumes the default alignment of 4 for

restore it.
