X doesn't start in either in safe or normal mode. Logs attached.
Driver vesa works, while ati gives a picture for an instant before

Hi Daniel,
this is not a wishlist thing. This is an annoying bug that was/is not
present in 8.04.2 but in Jaunty and 8.10!
The soundcard is incredibly loud and you cannot do anything except
taking out the cable which is not a viable solution for the 21st
century.

In current jaunty-alpha2 the display does not come up as well -
X starts and fails on DVI-0.
Unfortunately I'm not able to switch to text console - trying to reach a
normal terminal shuts down the display. Thus I cannot provide logs or
error messages.
In contrast to ubuntu 8.10 the system does
Workaround is to define an alias in .bashrc
alias emerge=aptitude update aptitude safe-upgrade
instead of a script.
This is as slow as before but doesn't kill the console.

The manually changed xorg.conf yields to the same X-window-not-working-

Since there were no updates available I had to manually set driver vesa in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.
The Try to restore X-utility of ubuntu didn't work - even starting with a
plain new config for my hardware didn't yield to a working X session.
