Here's how I fixed the gdm resolution problem on my system (running ubuntu 8.04
32-bit desktop).

1) xrandr -q
This showed the device name used for my monitor (VGA-0) and available

Thanks Derek. Your patch worked for me. I had already disabled IPv6 via
sysctl and took all IPv6 addresses off my interfaces. The about:config
solves firefox, but mutt and ssh were still a problem.
I'm a bit surprised at some of the suggested workarounds. I wouldn't

I ended up just installing the old intel server libudev0 from quantal's
repositories, and my installation is now fully functional!
Although after installing fglrx I got a bug similar to the one originally
posted in #1068404, on a guest account the bug was gone, so I wholesale
reset the paper source (File-Print, choose the tab Page Setup)
to Printer Default before printing, my print from the browser will be
successful. For pdf, I chose Tray 1 for Media source.
