[Bug 141551] Re: DRI lockup with AGP on ati (mobility radeon rv350)
I think I may have the same problem with Intrepid. I get random lockups within about 20 minutes using Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.10. I can still SSH in to the box and don't see any errors in the logs. I just swapped out my Radeon 8500 for an ancient ATI Rage 128 and I've gotten a good 2.5 hours of uptime, which led me to suspect the driver and to this bug. [Bug 227882] Re: hardy random freeze
Further testing with Intrepid gave me random locks, though it is much more stable than Hardy. Hardy will lock up unattended. Intrepid requires user activity before it will lock up, and even then it will run for an hour or so. I tried swapping out my video card, ATI Radeon 8500, with an ATI Rage 128 (don't laugh, it's the only spare I've got) and got 80 minutes of uptime with Hardy and 2.5 hours in Intrepid with that combination of hardware. Perhaps I'm seeing a problem a problem with the video driver, like described in Bug #141551. I still don't see any errors in the logs. [Bug 368546] Re: init script doesn't launch tpb at startup
The reason that it won't run from startup is because the OSD is on by default. OSD needs an X display and tpb dies saying it can't open display. You would think that it would be as simple as following the instructions in the manual. -o, --osd=STATE Show on-screen display for volume, mute and brightness. Possi‐ ble values are on and off. Default is on. Unfortunately for some reason turning it to off doesn't actually shut it off. Looks like there is something in the code that is forcing this to always be on. Hopefully if you can recompile it so that it is possible to turn it off, it will no longer bomb because it will no longer need the X display to run. -- init script doesn't launch tpb at startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 368546] Re: init script doesn't launch tpb at startup
Actually I must have been doing something wrong earlier, the -o off argument works now. I changed /etc/init.d/tpb so that line 16 is tpb -c /etc/tpbrc -d instead of tpb -d In /etc/tpbrc I set MIXER ON as I have to use OSS to control the mixer and I set OSD OFF so that it works on boot. If you want the osd stuff you need to run it from Preferences -> Startup Applications and add it as a new startup app, just make sure you start it with sudo. The tpb program is a horrible hack and the faster thinkpad-acpi can handle the volume buttons in the sys rather than the proc the better. -- init script doesn't launch tpb at startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 19021] Re: Should run dpkg --configure -a automatically
So and why do I have to open that Terminal. The update-tools allready requested your password to autherize the installation process. There are two options for me. In Synaptic there should just be a message window informing you that something went wrong last time and if synaptic should try to correct the problem by pressing yes or close by pressing no. In the case of the simple update for the normal user there should be no message just try to correct the problem. Only inform the user if it could'nt be corrected. So I reported that issue one and a half year ago. It was corrected in the meantime and forgotten in the next version step. May be someone fixes that, because Ubuntu is meant du be easy to use. [Bug 239355] Re: KVM very, very slow with RedHat and Solaris guests
I don't know how this can be considered fixed. It is certainly still a problem in Hardy. I can't really do a RHEL4 install without waiting 10+ minutes for a timeout on an alternate console so I can get in and echo a command to change the ide settings for a device. That's a pretty hefty work around for most users. There is a problem with the cdrom driver for kvm, that on hardy is not fixed. Upgrading to intrepid is not an option for most users. -- KVM very, very slow with RedHat and Solaris guests https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239355 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 141551] Re: DRI lockup with AGP on ati (mobility radeon rv350)
Bryce's suggestion works for me. I put a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 on my computer (homebuilt with a Gigabyte 7ZXE mobo), added an AGPMode of 2 to xorg.conf, took the "fail-safe default" values in the BIOS, which set the AGP speed to 2x. No mysterious hangs in 9 hours of uptime last night. I tried setting the BIOS to "optimized default" values, which sets the AGP speed to 4x, and changing AGPMode in xorg.conf to match. After about 2 hours the computer hung up. SSH in and Xorg was maxing out the CPU, just like the previous hangs and encoded describes in his comments above. Just changing the BIOS AGP speed to 2x and leaving the rest of the "optimized defaults" in place, I've had two sessions today of at least 2 hours each without any problems. This computer has no problem running with the AGP speed set to 4x in the bios when running Fiesty (see Bug #227882), if that makes any difference. ** Attachment added: "lspci.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17527165/lspci.txt -- DRI lockup with AGP on ati (mobility radeon rv350) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/141551 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 227806] Re: system crash with hardy
My bug, #227882 has been marked a duplicate of this one, so I will copy my latest findings over here. I have an ATI 8500 video card. I get random hangs with Gutsy and Intrepid (though Intrepid is more stable). If I disable DRI in xorg.conf, both Gutsy and Intrepid appear to be stable (over 8 hours of uptime with Intrepid vs. ~20 minutes). Of course, video performance suffers greatly. I'm watching Bug #141551, though that has to do with boots rather than run time hangs. I see ziti has an ATI Radeon Mobility X600. [Bug 238023] [NEW] Ubuntu8.04 kernel 2.6.24-18 can't recognize HD-partitions
Public bug reported: When I boot Ubuntu 8.04 with kernels 2.6.24-16-386 2.6.24-17-386 2.6.24-18-386 it seems not to recognize the partitions correct. They are named sda, sdb when I check with gparted. If I chose an older kernel, 2.6.20-16-386 it works and the partitions gets the named hda, hdb and so on. I attatch /var/log/fsck/checkfs for the corrupt and the OK kernel. The other attached files ( uname-a.log, version.log, dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log ) was generated when I had booted with an OK kernel. [Bug 289701] Re: (Intrepid)T61 brightness control goes very slow
Hi, I am seeing similar behavior as well to that described in other comments for this bug report. I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid as a dualboot on my Panasonic Let's note CF-W4. In my case I get no response whatsoever from my associated hotkeys, however that I can deal with. More problematic, and more germane to this particular bug report, when I add the brightness control widget to the top menu, and try to toggle/slide the control to alter the brightness, the response is terribly slow; on the order of one minute to slide the brightness from 100% to 0%, making it pretty much unusable. [Bug 153980] Re: 7.04->7.10 "Upgrade" fails: "Getting upgrade prerequisites failed"
Sorry, that's not it. I ran it again, copying (except for the typo in the do-release-upgrade line) the text word for word. Same error message. I _do_ find it weird that I don't have a prerequists-sources.list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d Instead, I have a whole bunch of old dapper and edgy repository addresses (inside six or so different files), which could be what's screwing this up (I think maybe do-release-update or ./gutsy is rewriting these addresses with 'feisty' in place of 'dapper' or 'edgy'). I tried deleting them, and editing them by hand, but both of those attempted solutions didn't work. also, I have sources.list~ and sources.list~~ in the directory as well, and they have deb http://us.archive.ubuntu entries as well. If I could just get my hands on a workable list of contents of /etc/apt/ that contain repository information, I could replace the current files in there, and I bet this would all work, but I don't know where to get such a thing. I want to bring to the attention of the package maintainer of gdm in Ubuntu that this bug has yet to be fixed in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.2 as of Feb. 28, 2009, at least on the i386 version and probably the other platforms. Please don't forget about all of the Hardy users who will be on this version for some time to come. Many, many people don't upgrade with every bright new version. GDM is a main Ubuntu package, so it merits that the fix be applied. From what others have reported, this also affects stability for at least some users. That in and of itself merits a bugfix be applied to Hardy. Also, Hardy is supposed to be an LTS release, is it not? That means it will be around for a minimum of three years for many users, including corporate users who may be adopting Ubuntu. Does Ubuntu really want to give its users the impression that it isn't interested in providing all possible bugfixes for LTS versions even if the fix is already known? -- GDM error on shutdown/restart https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249039 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Again, this post: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/141551/comments/14 describes something similar happening, but the original post is different. ** Attachment added: "IntrepidLogs.zip" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17354020/IntrepidLogs.zip -- system crash with hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/227806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 324808] Re: [Toshiba Satellite L300] suspend/resume problem
To have these quirks applied automatically, you must change the relevant fdi file. (/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk- toshiba.fdi) BACK UP THE FILE BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES add these lines just before the line true false or just apply the attached patch. sudo patch -p0 http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29327349/toshiba.patch -- [Toshiba Satellite L300] suspend/resume problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/324808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
