[Bug 141551] Re: DRI lockup with AGP on ati (mobility radeon rv350)

2008-07-30 Thread Joe
I think I may have the same problem with Intrepid. I get random lockups within
about 20 minutes using Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.10. I can still SSH in to the box
and don't see any errors in the logs. I just swapped out my Radeon 8500 for an
ancient ATI Rage 128 and I've gotten a good 2.5 hours of uptime, which led me
to suspect the driver and to this bug.
Gigabyte 7ZXE Mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1024 Mb RAM
ATI Radeon 8500
SMC1255TX PCI Ethernet Adapter
WDC WD2500JB, ATA Hard drive
SONY DVD RW DRU-720A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM
SONY CD-RW CRX320E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM

I was going to try fglrx and see if it makes a difference.

[Bug 227882] Re: hardy random freeze

2008-07-31 Thread Joe
Further testing with Intrepid gave me random locks, though it is much more
stable than Hardy. Hardy will lock up unattended. Intrepid requires user
activity before it will lock up, and even then it will run for an hour or so.
I tried swapping out my video card, ATI Radeon 8500, with an ATI Rage 128
(don't laugh, it's the only spare I've got) and got 80 minutes of uptime with
Hardy and 2.5 hours in Intrepid with that combination of hardware.
Perhaps I'm seeing a problem a problem with the video driver, like described in
Bug #141551. I still don't see any errors in the logs.
Any pointers as to how to narrow down the problem to the card, driver or kernel?

Just in case the post above is not clear, I did not get any lockups
using the ATI Rage 128 card. I used each distribution for the specified
amount of time, then rebooted back to my stable Kubuntu 7.04 when I was

[Bug 368546] Re: init script doesn't launch tpb at startup

2009-06-07 Thread Joe
The reason that it won't run from startup is because the OSD is on by
default. OSD needs an X display and tpb dies saying it can't open
display. You would think that it would be as simple as following the
instructions in the manual.

   -o, --osd=STATE
Show on-screen display for volume, mute and brightness. Possi‐
ble values are on and off. Default is on.

Unfortunately for some reason turning it to off doesn't actually shut it
off. Looks like there is something in the code that is forcing this to
always be on. Hopefully if you can recompile it so that it is possible
to turn it off, it will no longer bomb because it will no longer need
the X display to run.

[Bug 368546] Re: init script doesn't launch tpb at startup

2009-06-07 Thread Joe
Actually I must have been doing something wrong earlier, the -o off
argument works now. I changed /etc/init.d/tpb so that line 16 is

tpb -c /etc/tpbrc -d

instead of

tpb -d

In /etc/tpbrc I set MIXER ON as I have to use OSS to control the mixer
and I set OSD OFF so that it works on boot. If you want the osd stuff
you need to run it from Preferences -> Startup Applications and add it
as a new startup app, just make sure you start it with sudo. The tpb
program is a horrible hack and the faster thinkpad-acpi can handle the
volume buttons in the sys rather than the proc the better.

[Bug 348934] Re: MythTV doesn't go full screen without desktop visual effects off

using:

ubuntu 9.04 amd64 (clean install)

This issue was present in Hardy, corrected in Intrepid and resurfaced in
Jaunty. It appears to be Gnome specific, as I cannot duplicate the
issue in kde.

Workaround:

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager -- enable legacy
fullscreen support in the workarounds section.

This is only a partially effective workaround, and will result in video
artifacts if you are working in another window (scroll in another window

[Bug 283413] [NEW] Guided resize of partition shows incorrect percentages

2008-10-14 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

When attempting to install 8.10 Beta of Ubuntu, I selected the "Guided -
Resize SCSI1 (0,0,0), partion #1 (sda) and use freed space" option in
the partitioning tool.

It shows the following percentages by default (based on the 4GB used):

Before: /dev/sda1 99%, Free Space 0%
After: /dev/sda1 99%, Free Space 6%, Ubuntu 8.10 - 6%

Dragging the slider to different sizes does not modify the /dev/sda1
number (it always stays at 99%) and the Free Space and Ubuntu
percentages always mirror each other (60%, -60%).

Moving the mouse pointer over the New partition size window, the
percentages appear to be correct.

2008-10-30 Thread Joe

Since I was having problems with this at the time that I submitted the report,
I had removed Ubuntu from my computer and tried other things in the mean time.

I will behappy to try Intrepid again, maybe in the next couple of weeks, and
see if I run into any problems.

I thank all of those that have discussed and worked on this issue and I'll let
you know how it goes when I try it again.

Re: [Bug 19021] Re: Should run dpkg --configure -a automatically

2008-07-07 Thread joe
So and why do I have to open that Terminal. The update-tools allready
requested your password to autherize the installation process. There are two
options for me. In Synaptic there should just be a message window informing
you that something went wrong last time and if synaptic should try to
correct the problem by pressing yes or close by pressing no. In the case of
the simple update for the normal user there should be no message just try to
correct the problem. Only inform the user if it could'nt be corrected.

So I reported that issue one and a half year ago. It was corrected in the
meantime and forgotten in the next version step. May be someone fixes that,
because Ubuntu is meant du be easy to use. Hacking on the Console
is not easy.

Thanks

[Bug 239355] Re: KVM very, very slow with RedHat and Solaris guests

2008-10-03 Thread Joe
I don't know how this can be considered fixed. It is certainly still a
problem in Hardy. I can't really do a RHEL4 install without waiting 10+
minutes for a timeout on an alternate console so I can get in and echo a
command to change the ide settings for a device. That's a pretty hefty
work around for most users.

There is a problem with the cdrom driver for kvm, that on hardy is not
fixed. Upgrading to intrepid is not an option for most users.

[Bug 141551] Re: DRI lockup with AGP on ati (mobility radeon rv350)

2008-09-10 Thread Joe
Bryce's suggestion works for me. I put a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 on my
computer (homebuilt with a Gigabyte 7ZXE mobo), added an AGPMode of 2 to
xorg.conf, took the "fail-safe default" values in the BIOS, which set the AGP
speed to 2x. No mysterious hangs in 9 hours of uptime last night.
I tried setting the BIOS to "optimized default" values, which sets the AGP
speed to 4x, and changing AGPMode in xorg.conf to match. After about 2 hours
the computer hung up. SSH in and Xorg was maxing out the CPU, just like the
previous hangs and encoded describes in his comments above.
Just changing the BIOS AGP speed to 2x and leaving the rest of the "optimized
defaults" in place, I've had two sessions today of at least 2 hours each
without any problems.
This computer has no problem running with the AGP speed set to 4x in the bios
when running Fiesty (see Bug #227882), if that makes any difference.

[Bug 227806] Re: system crash with hardy

2008-08-07 Thread Joe
My bug, #227882 has been marked a duplicate of this one, so I will copy my
latest findings over here.
I have an ATI 8500 video card. I get random hangs with Gutsy and Intrepid
(though Intrepid is more stable).
If I disable DRI in xorg.conf, both Gutsy and Intrepid appear to be stable
(over 8 hours of uptime with Intrepid vs. ~20 minutes). Of course, video
performance suffers greatly. I'm watching Bug #141551, though that has to do
with boots rather than run time hangs.
I see ziti has an ATI Radeon Mobility X600. Perhaps the Radeon driver is the
cause?

If I use my ATI 8500 card and turn off DRI in xorg.conf, I don't have
any problems with hangs (Intrepid uptime over 8 hours!), so my problem
is probably similar to Bug #141551

[Bug 21186] Re: grub uses wrong bootparameters with sda after install

I am new to Ubuntu. I just installed Ubuntu version 8.04. I have the

[Bug 241552] [NEW] pata drive size being confused with sata drive

2008-06-20 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Hardy 2.6.24-19-server

I have a system with mixed pata and sata drives, the boot drive is the
first sata drive (sdb1). sda1 is a 160G partition on a pata drive, sdb1
is a 10G partition on an sata drive. Parted and cfdisk both report the
sizes correctly, however, If I try to put 15G of files on the
/dev/sda1, it gives an out of space error. It appears that the system
is using the size of sdb1 instead of sda1. Prior to installing Hardy,
this system was using Debian Sid, and the drive sizes were correct.

[Bug 230032] [NEW] "Default Keyring" Asks For Original Password

2008-05-13 Thread Joe
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Changed the password for a non-privileged user with gnome-about-me.
Then changed that user's privileges to allow 'administering the system'.
When logging on again as that user, a dialog box says that nm-applet
needs access to the default keyring, and asks for the user's password.
Only the original password for that user will work - the new one has no
effect. I assume this is a security vulnerability.

[Bug 227882] Re: hardy random freeze

2008-05-14 Thread Joe
I installed Fedora 9 on this same machine (different 40Gb hard drive) and have
had no problem with freezes in over an hour of uptime. This is much better
than the ~10 minute uptime I was getting with Hardy.
I know it uses a newer kernel and patches (2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 vs.
2.6.24-4.6-generic for Ubuntu Hardy) so perhaps the fix is in there somewhere?

[Bug 157424] Re: mod_xmlrpc.so: undefined symbol: xmlrpc_registry_new

2008-07-14 Thread Joe
I just ran across this problem too.

Ubuntu 8.04

I had previously been using mod xmlrpc. Tonight I installed the twiki
package along with it's requirements. The installation failed with the
same message as in the previous message "... Cannot load
/usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_xmlrpc.so into server:
/usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_xmlrpc.so: undefined symbol:
xmlrpc_registry_new"

I then uninstalled the twiki package and the problem remains. In order to start
apache2 successfully, I must now disable xmlrpc using the Debian script:
a2dismod xmlrpc. Apache2 starts fine without it, but I am now without the
xmlrpc features.

I'm not sure what's going on. Is it possible that one of the packages
that were required for twiki clashed with xmlrpc? Unfortunately, I did
not keep a record of the other packages that got installed along with
the twiki package.

[Bug 227882] Re: hardy random freeze

2008-05-23 Thread Joe
I saw that the original bug was fixed with the 2.6.25 kernel being prepared
for Intrepid Ibex 8.10. I followed the instructions posted in this comment:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/204996/comments/192
I've got over 6 hours of uptime in Hardy with the 2.6.25 kernel, so it appear
that whatever the problem is, it is fixed in the newer kernel.
Fedora 9 is also using a 2.6.25 kernel and I'm not seeing the lockup with it
either.

[Bug 238023] [NEW] Ubuntu8.04 kernel 2.6.24-18 can't recognize HD-partitions

2008-06-06 Thread JoE
Public bug reported:

When I boot Ubuntu 8.04 with kernels 2.6.24-16-386 2.6.24-17-386
2.6.24-18-386
it seems not to recognize the partitions correct.
They are named sda, sdb when I check with gparted.

If I chose an older kernel, 2.6.20-16-386 it works and the partitions
gets the named hda, hdb and so on.

I attatch /var/log/fsck/checkfs for the corrupt and the OK kernel.
The other attached files

  ( uname-a.log, version.log, dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log )
was generated when I had booted with an OK kernel.

Please tell me if you need more info.

[Bug 189288] Re: Couldn't open display computer:/// Places Computer

2008-12-26 Thread joe
Hello,everybody.
I have same problem here.
I didn't have this problem before.
But,perhaps,when I upgraded ubuntu-doc to the latest one,this happened.
I am using screenlets's trash as an alternative way now.
It's working.
But I have to delete "trash info" with using command line.
I'm not very good at computers so it's hard to understand complicated things
for me.
Is there something that I can do about this thing?
I did uninstall ubuntu-doc but anything didn't change at all.

Best regards,
joe.

[Bug 289701] Re: (Intrepid)T61 brightness control goes very slow

2009-01-21 Thread joe
Hi,

I am seeing similar behavior as well to that described in other comments
for this bug report.

I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid as a dualboot on my
Panasonic Let's note CF-W4.

In my case I get no response whatsoever from my associated hotkeys, however
that I can deal with.
More problematic, and more germane to this particular bug report, when I add
the brightness control widget to the top menu, and try to toggle/slide the
control to alter the brightness, the response is terribly slow; on the order of
one minute to slide the brightness from 100% to 0%, making it pretty much
unusable.

I have attached a tarball including the kern.log, hal.log and lshal.txt
files as recommended in the filing instructions page.

Cheers

[Bug 153980] Re: 7.04->7.10 "Upgrade" fails: "Getting upgrade prerequisites failed"

2009-03-16 Thread Joe
Sorry, that's not it. I ran it again, copying (except for the typo in
the do-release-upgrade line) the text word for word. Same error
message.

I _do_ find it weird that I don't have a prerequists-sources.list file
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Instead, I have a whole bunch of old dapper and edgy repository
addresses (inside six or so different files), which could be what's
screwing this up (I think maybe do-release-update or ./gutsy is
rewriting these addresses with 'feisty' in place of 'dapper' or 'edgy').
I tried deleting them, and editing them by hand, but both of those
attempted solutions didn't work.

also, I have sources.list~ and sources.list~~ in the directory as well,
and they have deb http://us.archive.ubuntu entries as well.

If I could just get my hands on a workable list of contents of /etc/apt/
that contain repository information, I could replace the current files
in there, and I bet this would all work, but I don't know where to get
such a thing.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

[Bug 285499] Re: FTBFS in Intrepid: open missing arguments

2009-02-28 Thread joe
Hi, I have latest patches till 02/28/2009 and try to build mips cross
compiler on gcc-3.4.5-glibc-2.3.6 and got exactly the same error on
Ubutun 8.10:

In function ‘open’,

It seems due to fcntl2.h missing 3rd argument. This kidn of bug seems
since gcc 2.7.x on several Linux system a few years, not sure why still
there. Any help would be appreciated. Fix on root-system may be a trick?
Can we have a general fix on this h file?

[Bug 249039] Re: GDM error on shutdown/restart

2009-02-28 Thread Joe
I want to bring to the attention of the package maintainer of gdm in
Ubuntu that this bug has yet to be fixed in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.2 as of
Feb. 28, 2009, at least on the i386 version and probably the other
platforms. Please don't forget about all of the Hardy users who will be
on this version for some time to come. Many, many people don't upgrade
with every bright new version. Who want's to be forced to upgrade just
to catch bugfixes? It appears that the fix has been made in the upstream
version of Ubuntu and Hardy has just been forgotten about.

I disagre. GDM is a main Ubuntu package, so it merits that the fix be
applied. From what others have reported, this also affects stability for
at least some users. That in and of itself merits a bugfix be applied to
Hardy. Also, Hardy is supposed to be an LTS release, is it not? That
means it will be around for a minimum of three years for many users,
including corporate users who may be adopting Ubuntu. Does Ubuntu really
want to give its users the impression that it isn't interested in
providing all possible bugfixes for LTS versions even if the fix is
already known?

[Bug 153980] Re: 7.04->7.10 "Upgrade" fails: "Getting upgrade prerequisites failed"

2009-03-08 Thread Joe
Hi, Same problem here. sources.list is overridden in upgrade process.

I tried Ante's solution (quoted below), but it didn't work for me. More
of the same. For the record, the error was:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-updates/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz
 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]

If anyone has further suggestions for workarounds, I'd like to hear
them. For the record, I hope Tomasz's idea is implemented and works.

Cheers,

[Bug 346855] [NEW] Page offset printing A4 test page

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

After a fresh install of jaunty alpha5, the test pages of both of my

inkjet still works correctly. When I use the laser printers with the ppd
file from my former Intrepid installation, the borders are correct
again.

[Bug 416570] [NEW] checkinstall does not respect pkgarch option

2009-08-20 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkinstall

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS
Release:8.04
checkinstall1.6.1-5ubuntu1

It is always set to the output of "dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH".
This diff corrects it:

+++ ./checkinstall  2009-08-20 12:43:42.0 -0500
