[Bug 233926] [NEW] Interface which has dhcp-client suddenly just dies

2008-05-22 Thread John D
Public bug reported:

Time by time my network interface will lose ability to transfer TCP/IP
packets. When this happends, it has IP address and it is up, but no
traffic goes through it. I have tested with different network adapters
but it doesn't have anything to do with it. Also I may have two
interfaces for one card (eth0 and vlan1), when other drops, other one
still works. Seems that only one which has dhcp-client has this feature.
If my interface has static ip, it doesn't have such problem. When I
restart interface (ifdown ifup) everything works fine again. This
happends at least once per day, but can happend several times in day.

2014-06-27 Thread John D
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 523796 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523796

I am not convinced this is a duplicate. I have a few notification
programs that will work for a while and then suddenly disappear. This
has been occurring for me since 13.04. I have created a script that
copies over a backup of the autostart directory before shutdown, and it
has not occurred since.

[Bug 1335662] [NEW] No status messages

2014-06-29 Thread John D
Public bug reported:

I've been playing around with dcfldd on the RPi, and it works mostly as
expected, but both dd and dcfldd tend to bog it down. I decided to give
it a try on my laptop running Ubuntu to backup the SD card, but there is
no status? That's the biggest advantage to using this package, IMO. I
even put status=on into the command line, still no feedback. This is
under 14.04.

2015-07-10 Thread John D
i was up to kernel 4.0.5 and the debian installer from AmD site
installed the packages reporting successful. however, it was only
partially functional. when i updated, via the kernelupdater application
to the next kernel4.1.2 i got all kinds of errors and xterm offered an
ambiguous last line, abort or remove folder. i am not sure which to pick.
so, may be facing another black screen. too bad these amd or gpu driver
updates are so problematic before even getting to a kernel update, now,
who knows what will break down? i dont know whether to purge out the
kernel and go back to 3.17, way backward in other words, just to use a
fairly unstable linux version of amd ccc, or purge out fglrx which is
not even close to comparable to the latest windows 15.7 beta driver
released simultaneously. amd needs to be far more concerned with linux
users or lose potential customers

[Bug 1772254] [NEW] i just downloaded a Ubuntu Mate brand new and got the same crash of installer at the very end , same bootloder failure again

2018-05-20 Thread John D
Public bug reported:

i have a dual boot set up, i put in a brand new windows 10 on my main
drive and attempted to put a new live usb version of Ubuntu Mate 18.04
lts nothing special just followed the installer prompts, nothing fancy.
all was new, and again i get the same problem. i tried to eliminate all
my potential mistakes and hoped for the best, but no. apparently , the
installer put a version onto the partition but cant boot into it, but i
am not sure. why it waits till the very end to notify of a crash is not
good. it would turn most people away from ubuntu totally. i have endured
over a dozen tries both plain ubuntu 18 and mate versions on live cd and
live use. cant make it go. even the workaround , installing the
bootloader through the repair method , copy/paste failed to boot into
the supposed system what's up. dont want any new linux users? isnt good.

RE: [Bug 1767703] Re: Calling 'apt-install grub-efi-amd64-signed' failed

2018-05-18 Thread John D
I made an installer of ubuntu mate 18.04 and encountered failures in all
methods of installation, side by side or to a newly created (gparted)
ext4 partition with plenty of room and free space. It gets all the way
though almost and kicks out the same error ‘apt-install grub efi …….’ I
have a hybrid motherboard in this computer can use bios or uefi. Only
way I got any joy was with a dvd ubuntu bionic beaver method. Usb never
works and I tried over 20 times with different methods. I even tried to
follow the ubuntu one directions to add the bootloader grub using
copy/paste method. No good. I came to learn, after I was successful with
the ubuntu via cd that there was indeed a successful installation but it
never showed up until later when I put in the grub customizer app. So ,
I do have a working , or 2 working installations of ubuntu. The ubuntu
mate (which is my favorite DE) is not successful. I am not any expert
so no way to know how much is my fault and if or how much is a bug or
issue with the installer. I used 3 separate methods to create the live
dvd or usb too.

Yes, user can select UEFI mode or BIOS at boot time of installation, but
somehow UEFI mode installation of opensuse (thumbleweed) works fine, but
1804 is not (on same disk and machine).

Also UEFI mode installation 1804 on that machine displays "message" what
it will be "manufactered mode" (as i remembered) and incorrectly defines
(displays in partition table) all existing ext4 partition as "efi", and
cant install grub on /dev/sdf(1), but tried on /dev/sda with failure
message.

2018-05-15 Thread John D
My 2¢ again, I just could not figure out how to boot into the perfectly
sound installation on a drive partition. Only 2 partitions and a block
of unallocated space. However, I was able to install ubuntu 18.04 using
a cd media to another partition on a 3rd drive , and it worked perfectly
first shot. And, a consequence of that grub install was it found the
original non bootable drive. So, now I have 2 drives with ubuntu bionic
beaver I can boot into.as well as windows 10. Not what I had originally
intended but it works for me. Now anyway

Thanks for weighing in.

I don't mean to imply that there's a bug in Ubiquity. But there's
clearly a failure somewhere in the installation process.

And I'm going to complain every time this bug is closed as "invalid"
until there's a more appropriate bug to reference.

[Bug 1955428] Re: request la_VA locale

2021-12-21 Thread John D.
I'm also seeing that there has been some activity on CLDR for a
definition of Latin among supported locales:

https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/seed/main/la.xml

However, I see that Ancient / Classical Latin has been used rather than
Ecclesiastical Latin in some cases in the proposed definition. I'm
checking in with the Pontifical Academy for the Latin Language (
https://www.pontificiaacademialatinitatis.org/ ) and with other academic
resources such as the Pontifical Institute for Higher Latin at the
Salesian University in Rome, for a consultation, so as to propose a
correct definition that will be useful for modern uses. If I have any
updates from this consultation, I will post them here (my understanding
is that comments posted here will be synched back upstream?)

[Bug 1955428] [NEW] request la_VA locale

2021-12-20 Thread John D.
Public bug reported:

Currently, there is no locale support for Latin (la_VA) in glibc or in
ubuntu.

I have been running into a few issues in the past couple years as I
develop some applications in PHP that have strings in a number of
languages, among which is Latin. However since there is no Latin locale
in the system, none of the strings in Latin can be handled through
`gettext` or any kind of localization functions in PHP (such as the soon
to be deprecated `strftime`, or the newer `IntlDateFormatter`, just to
mention a couple examples). Which means I can handle all translatable
strings through `gettext` with the exception of Latin, which I have to
hardcode into my applications. This makes for an application that
becomes hard to maintain, it would be so much easier to just be able to
handle any Latin translations just like any other language that is
supported by the application.

Here are some of the things I kept in mind in preparing this locale
file:

1) since the Vatican doesn't have streets and street numbers, and any
mail going to the Vatican needs simply have an indication of a personal
name and a department, followed by the zip (00120) and the country name
(generally "Città del Vaticano" in Italian is used, so that's what I put
as 'country_name' under 'LC_ADDRESS'. Keeping all this in mind I
simplified the 'postal_fmt' control characters.

2) Generally anyone being addressed at the Vatican is either the Pope, a
Cardinal, a Bishop, a Monsignor, or the head of a department (will often
use a title such as "Dottore"), so I formatted 'LC_NAME' with title,
name and surname.

3) Yes and No in Latin are expressed as "Sic" and "Non".

4) Monetarily, the Vatican uses the Euro, so this is the same as the
Italian locale

5) LC_NUMERIC cannot effectively be defined correctly, because Latin,
even ecclesiastical Latin, uses Roman numerals. However, I don't believe
any kind of POSIX locale supports anything besides Arabic numerals in
ascending order from 0 to 9. So to make this work, I just left it the
same as the Italian locale.

6) For the days of the Week, ecclesiastical Latin in fact uses "Feria
Secunda" or "Feria II" rather than the classical "Dies Lunae". Seeing
that a practical application for this could be formatting Dates to be
printed in texts such as the Roman Missal, and considering that in the
Roman Missal the days of the week are printed with Roman numerals rather
than in word form ("Feria II" rather than "Feria Secunda"), I opted for
using the Roman numerals in the names of the days of the week.

7) I'm not sure I fully know the format for the 'LC_CTYPE' section, but
I eyeballed the German locale to have an idea. Seeing that Latin has a
few ligatures, I'm guessing they need to be defined?

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2010-01-08 Thread John D Sheehan
Problem persists in this kernel update (2.6.31-17) for the huawei e220 modem.
Kernel seems to recognise it as a storage device, then as a modem, then as a
storage device ...

I have attached the output of /var/log/messages

Lucky for me I still have kernel 2.6.31-11 with which the modem works hanging
about, otherwise I would be screwed.

[Bug 460055] [NEW] with visual effects disabled, notifications and system-admistration-system monitor cannot be seen

2009-10-24 Thread John D Sheehan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

when the visual effects are disabled, the notifications which appear on the top
right of the screen are
garbled. Instead of text on a black background, a grid of different colours
appears. The same happens
with the system monitior, including the title bar (see attached png).

[Bug 299381] Re: importing matplotlib gives warning

2008-12-15 Thread John D Hunter
Hi,

I'm a matplotlib developer and I will posit a guess about what is going
on. matplotlib optionally installs pytz and datetuil if it is not found
on the system at install time. You can override the default behavior by
copying the file setup.cfg.template to setup.cfg and editing it to turn
off the pytz and dateutil installs::

  ## Date/timezone support:
  pytz = False
  dateutil = False

It looks like perhaps you are getting the ubuntu datetutil and the
matplotlib datetuil, but this is just a guess. The ubuntu packager will
probably want to rely on the upstream pytz and datetutil, and turn off
matplotlib's install by modifying setup.cfg as described above.

[Bug 97480] swap vol_id incorrect after some updates

2007-03-28 Thread John D Sheehan
Public bug reported:

occurs in feisty,
after some updates ( usually involving a kernel update ) the ID_FS_UUID for my
swap partition, as reported by vol_id, is changed so that it differs from the
value in fstab. To fix this I have to edit the fstab file and update the uuid
value.
If the uuid is not updated, then under heavy usage the computer grinds to a
halt and starts terminating random programs.

[Bug 830550] Re: Missing C Standard files from kernel source and module headers

2011-08-28 Thread John D Lamb
After some hunting around I found the following allowed me to compile
kernel module under Natty.

$ cd /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/include
$ sudo ln -s $(gcc -print-file-name=include)/stdarg.h

This links stdarg.h to where the kernel makefiles will find it when it’s
#included from the various kernel header files in Natty.

I forced Update Manager to check for new updates on a daily basis. In
each case, the Branding package would fail to install while the other
updates seemed to install ok. After about two iterations of this, the
branding package seemed to install ok. That lasted a couple of days,
but just started popping up as an error again immediately after I cold
start and log in.

[Bug 796245] [NEW] Weather Data for Dhaka, Bangladesh not updating regularly

2011-06-12 Thread John D Marsden
Public bug reported:

The METAR weather feed for Dhaka has been VGZR. However this feed has
not been reliably transmitting data recently. (see
http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/VGZR). Therefore up to date
weather data has not been showing in the desktop panel applet.

There is a more recent weather feed at VGHS which is at Dhaka Airport
(see http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/VGHS) and uses the new name
for the airport (i.e. Hazrat Shajahal Intl Airport not Zia Intl
Airport).

As a work-around I have updated the code used by the applet using gconf,
but this update will be lost whenever the information is refreshed from
/usr/share/libgweather/Locations.xml.

I believe you should add an entry for VGHS in the Locations.xml file and
make this the default for Dhaka.

I am still using Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS with libgweather 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 but
I have inspected the Locations file in revision 47 in the Oneiric branch
and it also only has VGZR, not VGHS for Dhaka.

I am also emailing the maintainer of the weather stations list at
http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/surface/stations.txt to make the same
point as this is impact many sites delivering weather information from
METAR data.

[Bug 296863] Re: If too many timezone are configured, lower ones are cut off the screen with no way to see them

2010-07-24 Thread John D Marsden
This bug is particularly annoying for users of netbooks and the Ubuntu Netbook
Edition. My 600 pixel deep screen cuts off the fourth location listed which is
very irritating as I work with people in many countries round the world and
often travel across timezones.
Although I am a newbie, if i knew how, I'd put my hand to fixing it myself as
this seems to have been stuck in the wishlist for more than two years over in
gnome-bugs. Ubuntu Desktop Experience team - can you push this along please?

After a complete system update and reboot HP printer works from boot up.

[Bug 522318] Re: Serial Tablet PCs not supported in lucid

2010-05-09 Thread John D Lamb
I’ve been trying to configure an antique Wacom serial tablet I got in
the lower oölitic silurian. This one gets its power from the PS/2 mouse
or keyboard socket and transfers data through the serial port. First:

$ udevadm info --path=/sys/class/tty/ttyS0/ --attribute-walk

Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then

walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device

found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format.

A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device

and the attributes from one single parent device.

  looking at device '/devices/pnp0/00:07/tty/ttyS0':

KERNEL==ttyS0

SUBSYSTEM==tty

DRIVER==

  looking at parent device '/devices/pnp0/00:07':

KERNELS==00:07

SUBSYSTEMS==pnp

DRIVERS==serial

ATTRS{id}==PNP0501

  looking at parent device '/devices/pnp0':

KERNELS==pnp0

SUBSYSTEMS==

DRIVERS==

The only identifying attribute is PNP0501. So I adjust
/etc/udev/rules.d/65-xorg-wacom.rules:
ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEM==pnp, ATTR{id}==WACf*, ENV{NAME}=Serial
Wacom Tablet

ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEM==pnp, ATTR{id}==FUJ*,
ENV{NAME}=Serial Wacom Tablet

ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEM==pnp, ATTR{id}==PNP0501,
ENV{NAME}=Serial Wacom Tablet

ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEMS==pnp, ATTRS{id}==WACf*,
ENV{ID_INPUT}=1, ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}=1, ENV{x11_driver}=wacom

ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEMS==pnp, ATTRS{id}==FUJ*,
ENV{ID_INPUT}=1, ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}=1, ENV{x11_driver}=wacom

ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEMS==pnp, ATTRS{id}==PNP0501,
ENV{ID_INPUT}=1, ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}=1, ENV{x11_driver}=wacom

Now test:
$ udevadm test /class/tty/ttyS0

…

[Bug 577353] Re: System can not find root device with kernel 2.6.32-22

2010-05-14 Thread John D Marsden
I am experiencing this bug on my wife's Toshiba NB200 netbook, but it is not
occuring on my identical hardware. Software environments on the two machines
are also almost identical:
- Both started with Karmic UNR as dual boot retaining, but hardly ever using,
the supplied Windows7 starter edition.
- Both machines were regularly updated automatically through Update Manager,
usually within twelve hours of each other.
- Both upgraded to Lucid by normal upgrade procedure driven by Update Manager
over a slow internet connection.
- Both updated from kernel 2.6.32.21 to 2.6.32.22
Main differences are that my machine has more software packages added, and my
wife has a greater propensity to solve user problems by switching off the power
and re-booting!

See original report in comment #28 in bug #360378. Note that simply
choosing to load 2.6.32.21 from Grub was not enough to solve the
problem. I had to manually copy in an alternative initrd.img file as
explained in comment #28 in bug #360378.

I'm still a newbie in Ubuntu so if you would like logs and configuration
files posted, or upstream packages tested, please give me step by step
advice or point me to an appropriate how to page.

[Bug 360378] Re: Gave up waiting for root device after upgrade then busybox console

2010-05-14 Thread John D Marsden
I had the same problem on my wife's Netbook (Toshiba NB200) after
upgrading from Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 to Lucid using the standard
upgrade procedure.

I tried the extending the rootdelay altering the Grub instructions to
look for /dev/sdax instead of the UUID but neither worked.

However after downloading a Lucid Ubuntu Netbook Edition .iso image and
booting from a USB drive Rick Silva's suggestion at comment #26 above
worked. I copied initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic from the RAM disk once I'd
booted off the USB drive.

I can now boot from 2.6.32.21 on my hard drive. HOWEVER I cannot boot
from 2.6.32.22-generic which was installed a few days ago by the Update
Manager. Using synaptic to remove 2.6.32.22-generic and re-install it
does not solve the problem.

The initrd.img I copied from the USB boot is about 12.9 Mb but the
initrd.img files on my hard disk are about 7.6 Mb.

What is the underlying problem here? Is there something else about my
upgrade to Lucid which is resulting in initrd.img files being damaged,
or incorrectly constructed? How might I diagnose what is going on?

I'm not expert in Linux boot time processes, but I'm happy to do my bit
to diagnose the underlying issue. I'd like to see this fixed properly
so Ubuntu genuinely can be used by ordinary humans, like my wife, not
just people who roam technical websites.

[Bug 883711] Re: Workspace Switcher applet number of workspaces resets to 1 after logging into GNOME 3 Shell and switching back to fallback classic mode

2012-06-30 Thread John D. Nash
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 826089 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/826089

Confirmed. Even if I use (right click / preferences) to set the
workspace swticher to 8 workspaces in 2 rows, then next time I log in it
is back to 2x2 grid with 1 workspace.

Need to set it every time I log in. Since Unity came out there has been
a drive to make it more cell phone like -- harder to use to get work
done. There is a cute little workspace switcher in Unity, but switching
workspaces requires three clicks each time and it can only accommodate 4
workspaces -- very suboptimal compared with clicking once on the Gnome
panel workspace swticher.

I haven't figured out where to set the default values for the Gnome
workspace switcher in compiz, and the following code (which was offered
in a forum) does not solve the problem either.

gconftool --type Integer --set /apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/vsize 8
gconftool --type Integer --set /apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/hsize 8

[Bug 1085169] Re: LibreOffice Menus Stop Working even with libreoffice=1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 and indicator-appmenu=12.10.3-0ubuntu2.1

2012-12-11 Thread John D Marsden
This bug is also affecting me and my wife. Running on amd64 laptop with
no special video drivers. Confirm I am have amd64 versions of
libreoffice-core 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 and indicator-appmenu
12.10.3-0ubuntu2.1 installed.

It happens on both my and my wife's computers (same amd64 software
configuration but I have full Libreoffice metapackage while she has just
standard install from quantal upgrade).

How to reproduce the bug:

Use Libre Office Writer for some variable time ranging from a very few minutes
upwards.
Work using mouse to select a menu item from the menu bar (on the top line in
the indicator menu area).
Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the menu items stop functioning. Libreoffice
can still be controlled using the icons but actions for which no item exists
cannot be performed. The HUD display, despite showing a picture of Libreoffice
writer to the left, also stops working. It does not give any Libreoffice
actions in response to typing. It offers only items from the indicator panel,
e.g. Skype, Dropbox Network.

If a second Libreoffice document is opened it does not display the bug.

Work-round:
Close and re-open the file.

Today my wife worked for about five hours on LibreOffice writer and had
the problem five times. I worked a similar period of time and today
didn't have it at all, though did yesterday.

If there is any tracking software we could run to help track down what
is triggering this please let us know.

Still happening for me after the upgrade released to fix bug #1064962

Using a 64-bit system upgraded from Precise to Quantal with all latest

Please release a fix soon as without it all the fancy work to make a HUD
is fruitless for the type of work where being able to stick with the
keyboard is most useful - i.e. office applications.

[Bug 1338063] [NEW] Brightness control lost after suspend screen dimmed

2014-07-05 Thread John D Marsden
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 14.04. Recently updated to kernel version Ubuntu
3.13.0-30.54-generic 3.13.11.2

I expect brightness of my LCD screen to remain the same and be
controllable after waking from suspend. It doesn't and isn't.

This seems to have only started recently - presumably after a recent
update.

What happens:

Brightness controls fully working after initial boot, both through
function keys and system settings.

After putting computer into suspend and then re-awakening the LCD screen
comes up with lowest brightness in actual appearance but settings still
show the brightness as set at suspend time. Controls for brightness
have become ineffective - they slide the brightness bar along but make
no difference to the actual brightness of the screen.

[Bug 1338063] Re: Brightness control lost after suspend screen dimmed

2014-07-05 Thread John D Marsden
Clarification:

Screen does not always come up dimmed after suspend. Screen comes up
with setting prior to suspend.

If the computer has gone into suspend itself after being unused for a
certain amount of time it comes up dimmed, even if not deliberately set
to this by the user. In these circumstances the computer has dimmed the
screen some time prior to going into suspend.

In all cases controls no longer function after suspend as reported in
initial post.

[Bug 1351305] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z35-AST3N01] Touchpad / Trackpoint recognised as generic mouse

2014-08-19 Thread John D Marsden
Summary:

This is fixed in kernel 3.17-rc1.

Detail:

Researching this for my daughter (Ruth Marsden) I've found this issue has been
known on the kernel mailing lists for sometime. See
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg29123.html.
The issue relates to touchpad devices using the ALPS v7 protocol. These
devices are reported in this post to have device info as follows:
 Device ID = 0x73, 0x03, 0x0a
 Firmware ID = 0x88, 0xb*, 0x**
Which includes my daughter's Toshiba Z35 which has this Device ID and Firmware
ID = 0x88, 0xb3, 0x22

A kernel patch has been in production over the last few weeks. See
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg32703.html and related posts. This
patch was added on 9th August and can be found in the Ubuntu kernel daily
builds from then and the weekly build at
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc1-utopic/ .
To install this see the Installing upstream kernels section of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

We've tested the 3.17-rc1 kernel on my daughter's Toshiba Z35 laptop and
can confirm that both touchpad and trackpoint devices work. They are
recognised as an AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad and the touchpad
section now appears in System Settings Mouse Touchpad. In
particular disabling while typing is available and works.

Presumably a kernel with this patch will be released in Ubuntu in due
course.

Workround provided from upstream dialogue - Thank you Aaron.

See http://marc.info/?l=linux-acpim=140686098023199w=2

In summary:
Switching to use the intel-backlight interface rather than the acpi_video0
interface makes the controls for brightness work after suspend. This can be
done by creating, or adding to, the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the section
below:

Section Device
Identifier Intel Graphics
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod sna
Option Backlight intel_backlight
Driver intel

[Bug 1338063] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z835-ST6N03] Brightness control lost after suspend screen dimmed

2014-07-22 Thread John D Marsden
Christopher, Thank you for your guidance on this issue. I want to make
sure I report this upstream in the correct way and am unsure of which
upstream list I should be using.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend mentions says Suspend and
Resume use facilities within your BIOS called ACPI. Should I therefore report
to the linux-a...@vger.kernel.org list?
Or should I use the linux...@vger.kernel.org list which is mentioned in the
SUSPEND TO RAM section of
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/MAINTAINERS
?
Or, since the bug refers to a Toshiba laptop should I use the
platform-driver-...@vger.kernel.org list which is mentioned in the TOSHIBA
ACPI EXTRAS DRIVER section?
Or something else?

I appreciate your help.

2014-07-07 Thread John D Marsden
Christopher, thank you for your advice and my apologies for not
following the protocol of first checking for BIOS updates.

I have now updated the BIOS. Results of sudo dmidecode -s bios-version
sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date are:
   Version 1.80
   04/18/2013
so the update has worked.

Unfortunately the problem still persists as previously described.

Please note the problem also manifests on my wife's Toshiba Protege
Z835-ST8305 which I have also updated to the latest BIOS. Her computer
is also running Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel version Ubuntu
3.13.0-30.55-generic 3.13.11.2

Thank you for your help.

[Bug 1338063] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z835-ST6N03] Brightness control lost after suspend screen dimmed

2014-07-08 Thread John D Marsden
Clarification:

I have gone back to older kernels on my machine to confirm my feeling
that this only started happening recently. The oldest kernel on my
machine is 3.8.0-31-generic. The problem also occurs with when booted
with this kernel so my feeling that this was recent is wrong.

I have edited the original bug report to remove my assertion that it had
seemed to have only started recently.

** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu 14.04. Recently updated to kernel version Ubuntu
  3.13.0-30.54-generic 3.13.11.2

I expect brightness of my LCD screen to remain the same and be
controllable after waking from suspend. It doesn't and isn't.
-
- This seems to have only started recently - presumably after a recent
- update.

[Bug 1338063] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z835-ST6N03] Brightness control lost after suspend screen dimmed

2014-07-09 Thread John D Marsden
As requested I followed the steps in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend.

Results are:
1. Information from sticker on computer:
   Manufacurer: Toshiba
   Model: Protege Z835-ST6N03
   Part No: PT224U-01W00C
2. Bios is already upgraded to latest version 1.80.
3. Booted in mianline upstream kernel 3.16-rc4. Suspended with pm-trace and
awakened successfully.
cat /proc/acpi/wakeup wakeup result is attached.
4. Resume trace result:
   a) Resume succeeded, though LCD brightness controls fail as originally
reported.
   b) Result of: dmesg mesg.txt will be attached.
   c) Searched dmesg.txt for Magic number and got:
   .
   [0.864274] Magic number: 6:405:689
   [0.864395] rtc_cmos 00:05: setting system clock to 2014-07-09
15:41:36 UTC (1404920496)
   .
   d) Searched dmesg.txt for hash match and got no lines matching search.
   e) Not sure whether brightness controls failing counts as graphics related
issue.
So will attach Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old just in case.

2014-07-10 Thread John D Marsden
In answer to did this problem not occur in a release prior to Trusty?:

I'm sorry, I don't know for sure. I only noticed the problem the day I
first reported it, however my behaviour regarding shutdowns rather than
suspends has recently changed so that may well be why I noticed it. My
wife hadn't noticed it on her computer (see mention in comment #6) until
I specifically tested for it.

However in comment #9 above I report testing and getting the same result
with kernel version 3.8.0-31 which must date from when I had Raring
running on my computer.

change anything?
No it does not change anything. I tried with this kernel parameter removed on
the latest mainline upstream kernel 3.16-rc4.

As requested, tested on Precise 12.04.0 and 12.04.3 both obtained from
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/. Used Live CD method.
In both cases the bug as originally reported occurred.
