I wanted to make a modification to praat, so first I checked that I
could compile praat (unaltered) from its source package. It compiled
but it would not run.
I installed a new clean version of Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 on my computer.
I installed the binary package praat
I doubt it's my CPU, but I've attached the /proc/cpuinfo from two
computers where I've tried this and had the problem.
Are other people able to compile praat on a new Ubuntu Dapper
installation and run it? Is this a general problem, or is it just me?

makefiles/makefile.defs.linux.* to specify a gcc
It already made a check to restrict the length of the parameter to the
-v option, but a buffer that was used later was too short.

Using the Ubuntu 9.04 beta live-cd, I found that doing the command:
espeak hello world 1 2 3 4 5
produces what sounds like very fast garbled speech on one computer
occasionally, but always (every time) on another.
On the computer where the fault occurs always, I then changed to the
Kububtu 9.04

standard installation CD.

This sounds like it's caused by portaudio V18, which uses the OSS sound
system, which can only by used by one program at a time. Portaudio V19
can use the ALSA sound system and can mix sounds from multiple sources.
I believe eSpeak on Ubuntu is built to use portaudio V18.

I think eSpeak currently pronounces ubuntu correctly. The command:
espeak -x ubuntu
shows the phonemes codes:

Is that not correct? The 3 vowels are the same, and the stress is on the
