Edit the file /usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount (as root), and change
AutoMount from true to false. This disables the Network browsing when
Thunar starts up, but still lets you mount network storage such as samba

The problem can't be to do with graphics drivers as my laptop has an
intel card with open source drivers, and the desktop has a nvida card
with proprietary drivers. Both have coloured-in fontwork letters in

It doesn't really seem possible to disable plymouth. If you try and remove it
in synaptic, you would end up removing nearly the whole system due to its
dependencies on other things. I've found you can disable the plymouth splash,
by removing 'quiet splash' from the grub command line, however
@Linuxexperte: The newer kernels which natty use still default to using
the rt2800pci driver, which means you still have to do the blacklisting.
My kernel still has the rt2800pci module, I just prefer to use rt2860
because its more stable like mentioned earlier.

The freezing issues must be related to wifi as when it crashes the word
rt2860 is sometimes shown on the screen, along with other debugging
info. It seems like a kernel panic.

I have found 802.11n from a bt home hub works fine with my eeepc
(1001ha). If you are having problems then I suggest trying one of the
mainline kernels (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/), as
they have much improved ralink wireless drivers.

An alternative way of doing it would be to use the rt2800pci module and
add a script to unload it on shutdown. I've found that the rt2800pci
module works better, but sometimes causes the system to freeze when
shutting it down, but I added a script in /etc/init.d, and linked it (ln

Did you try doing Ubuntu updates over ethernet before installing the
driver? I installed the updates over ethernet and then installed the
driver, and my eeepc (1001ha) works fine now apart from a few freezing
issues.

Ignore comment #40, I experience freezing when using the workaround, the
dkms driver does this also. Freezing occurs if you boot up the system
without the router turned on. If you reboot it, it loads fine, but
freezing happens regularly and boot time.
Will this bug be fixed in a newer kernel or
I've tried Andy B's suggestion but instead of a pulseaudio bell, it
makes an annoying pc speaker one instead.

To make the internal microphone load in at startup, add the amixer line
(amixer set 'Input Source' 'Int DMic') to startup applications
(SystemPreferencesStartup Applications). I've found this has solved
the problem.

I've found to get them both working you need the parameter amixer set
'Input Source' 'Int DMic' 'Mic' at startup and that works fine for both
mics (input and internal).

I've found a workaround (you probably know but just incase), completely
remove the top panel where the applets are, reboot (or restart desktop
environment), make a new panel and add everything back on it
