Bugs,
Version 1.5.0-3~hyper1~karmic1 from banshee-unstable fixes this problem.
The default smart playlist contains the right rule and works correctly.
If I provide the correct rule in banshee 1.4.3-6 it also works, but the
default smart playlist only contains added1 week ago which doesn't do
anything.
I can report some progress :)
The balance now stays in the position I set it to while changing volume using
gnome-volume-control. It is however still reset to middle if I mute the volume
by pulling the volume slider completely to the left. This does not happen if I
enable/disable the Mute
...and gnome-media (gnome-volume-control) 2.27.91-0ubuntu1.

Empathy 2.27.91.1 still has this problem. I don't have any issues when
I'm chatting with someone who is using pidgin. Chatting with someone who
is using ICQ 5.1 causes the error message to appear. Empathy then prints
question marks instead of umlauts.

I should note that this is indeed because of xsplash not reacting on the
resolution change.
When X starts up on my laptop with my external display connected it uses the
highest common resolution of the internal and external display in mirror mode,
which isn't the native resolution for either
The culprit here is gnome-power-manager. Although the backlight of my
laptop display is at full brightness when g-p-m starts, it uses a cached
value (brightness 0, which is wrong) and then dims it up from there to
full brightness. I connected my laptop to AC before starting up.
I captured the
Attaching verbose log of g-p-m from a user session for comparison. g-p-m
doesn't dim there and leaves the brightness as it is.

Hm, after more research I think I have a different bug than you. I
traced my problem back to hal using the wrong /sys-file, which would be
