[Bug 1729433]

2021-01-28 Thread Koen Roggemans
I think this bug describes the behaviour on
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1274365/windows-of-an-application-have-
minimum-size-and-i-cant-find-the-window-anymore

We have noticed that with several of our students on Ubuntu 20.04 with
LO 7.0.4.2

2020-06-11 Thread Koen Roggemans
Public bug reported:

I found kile missing nearly all icons in the interface (open, save,
undo, redo, ...). Also the application Icon was corrupt in the launcher.

Solutions:
apt install qt5-gtk-platformtheme:amd64 fixed the missing icons in the interface

echo 'StartupWMClass=kile' >>
/usr/share/applications/org.kde.kile.desktop solved the corrupt icon in
the launcher

[Bug 1557215] Re: "The update information is outdated" warning won't go away. No information given about how to fix

2019-12-18 Thread Koen Roggemans via ubuntu-bugs
I see this same behaviour regularly on systems running 18.04 as well.
Running sudo apt update makes the update process resume - no errors shown.

Without doing that the system reports that it is up to date and it
isn't, making it unsafe.

Non techy users freak out on using a command line command. I think this
could and should be self healing, eg by running an apt update on resume
after network up.

I see the same behavior as mikewiz38: via a webtest 104 Mbps download and in

So speed is not bad - it just looks bad (on 16.04.1 with hwe kernel 4.8.0-53)

[Bug 1694022] [NEW] Dell Latitude 5580 trackpoint not working after suspend

2017-05-27 Thread Koen Roggemans
Public bug reported:

After a fresh boot, the track point or dual point stick is working and so does
the left, right and middle button for it.
After suspend and resume, none of the above work anymore. The touchpad and
accompanied left and right button are not affected and work always perfectly.

I noticed bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1630857 which
reports the same problem for a different type of Dell laptop. My kernel
version is a lot newer then the one where it is fixed in.

Ubuntu version is 16.04..02 LTS

This Dell Latitude 5580 is listed as Ubuntu certified.

[Bug 1558489] Re: touchpad stopped working

2016-04-05 Thread Koen Roggemans
I can confirm Zanna's solution for the Acer B115
apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-xenial
linux-headers-generic-lts-xenial, resulting in kernel 4.4.0-15-generic solved
the problem.
So the 4.4.0.-13.7 and 3.19.0-56 are not ok, the 4.4.0-15-generic #31~14.04.1
is ok

[Bug 1558489] Re: touchpad stopped working

2016-03-18 Thread Koen Roggemans
I'm wrong.
3.19.0-51 is the last version I found where the touchpad works.
All higher versions (including 3.19.0-56) are not ok

Touchpad is SYN1B7D:01 06CB:2991 and SYN1B7D:01 06CB:74D9
I don't know where the second type number comes from. The devices are Acer
B115. Acer has upgraded the firmware of the touchpads due to erratic cursor
behaviour. Next time I looked, the 2991 seemed to have changed to 74D9.

[Bug 1369684] Re: Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2015-02-22 Thread Koen Roggemans
I didn't hear anything from Tim Gardner.

What a shame - the fix is here and hundreds of users get a bad user
experience using Ubuntu, with a constantly locking laptop.

No, I don't know the ways to get it upstream. Suppose I could send a
message to Tim Gardner.

[Bug 1369684] Re: Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2014-12-01 Thread Koen Roggemans
I can confirm that this driver solves the problem.
The problem is reduced to the problem that exists in the Windows driver (being
locking for 2 seconds in stead of locking for very long or forever when
touching the touch pad with more then one finger)

[Bug 1369684] Re: Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2014-11-29 Thread Koen Roggemans
Thanks a lot for this! I don't have a device with me to test, so I'll test it
next week. I did a diff with the current elantech file for 3.13 and there are
so many differences. It's for me not possible to tell which one solves the
problem. I think it is based on an older version of the file.
I took the liberty to include Hans de Goede in this bug. He did all 2014
changes to the elantech driver in Ubuntu this year - I hope you don't mind Hans.

[Bug 1369684] Re: Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2014-09-29 Thread Koen Roggemans
I can confirm the behavior in Windows. The pointer works fine, but if you touch
it with two fingers, it somewhat hangs for 1 or 2 seconds and then moves on.
It's not really disturbing. No multitouch working, but
Anyway, it's not relevant what it does in Windows. The complete locking of the
pointer in Linux is really annoying.
I'm happy to help testing - I'm sorry I can't help coding.

[Bug 1369684] Re: Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2014-09-27 Thread Koen Roggemans
For our machines, there is no bios update published by the manufacturer
yet (don't know where else to look).

I would assume that if a device loads different firmware, it is a
different device, no?.

comparing bios versions:
our bios version
MPBYT10A.90A.0029.2014.0421.1908 with dmi.bios.date: 04/21/2014

your bios version
MPBYT10A.86A.0023.2014.0317.1155 with Release Date: 03/17/2014

It seems like our bios is more recent than yours.

Interesting to note that they don't run trouble free on Windows either.
Would there be more problems then the driver? I'll give that a try next
week.

[Bug 1369684] [NEW] Elantech touchpad locks cursor when touching with 2 or more fingers

2014-09-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 14.04.1, Unity desktop, kernel 3.13.0-35 generic on Intel
Classmate, MG Pupil 109

The touchpad is identified in dmesg as
[1.539535] mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
[2.528608] psmouse serio4: elantech: assuming hardware version 3 (with
firmware version 0x354f01)
[2.541184] psmouse serio4: elantech: Synaptics capabilities query result
0x39, 0x16, 0x09.

The cursor locks when you touch the touchpad with 2 or more fingers. The
only way I found to get it loose is reboot or suspend and resume.

modprobe -r psmouse
modprobe psmouse doesn' t work, also not with proto=auto

In systemsettings I disabled 2 finger scrolling without result

In dmesg I see messages like psmouse serio4: Touchpad at
isa0060/serio4/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 5 bytes away during
normal operation. The number of bytes can be 4 too. When the cursor
locks up, I don't see such a message. Nothing is reported in dmesg.

Doing some research, I've learned that the touchpad should support multi
touch. Off course that doesn't work, since touching the pad with more
fingers makes it lock.

Any help much appreciated.

[Bug 1268833] Re: 10ec:8178 Wireless not working in 13.10 and 14.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)/asus pce-n15

2014-04-20 Thread Koen Roggemans
I installed a 32 bits 14.04 and I don't see any difference. That said, in my
case I don't see connection drops, I only see really poor performance, compared
with other gear I have in the house.
Using wavemon the signal strength and the link quality are similar on the same
spot with different hardware, but the bitrate is an awfull lot lower (1 Mbit/s
compared to 36 Mbit/s at a reasonable distance from the router) and with max
power (100mW - power management apparently off be default), while my faster
gear is happy with 39,81 mW.

[Bug 1024459] Re: panel and launcher blinks when using libreoffice presenter/spreadsheet

2014-02-22 Thread Koen Roggemans
This bug also happens in Ubuntu 12.04, running latest unity for that version
(5.20).
Is it possible to backport the fix? We have about 200 laptops showing this
behaviour when editing a LibreOffice Writer document and changing the text
color. Launcher and top panel disappear.

The bug was already reported for unity version 5, but marked as
duplicate (bug 1024720)

[Bug 1239414] Re: rtl8192ce fails to load firmware

2013-10-18 Thread Koen Roggemans
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
  linux-firmware 1.79.6

Wireless for Realtek rtl8188ce, based on the module r8192ce, is broken
on kernel 3.2.0 since arround release 40.

- The error message in dmesg is:
- rtl8192ce:rtl92c_init_sw_vars():0-0 Failed to request firmware!
+ The error message in dmesg is:
+ rtl8192ce:rtl92c_init_sw_vars():0-0 Failed to request firmware!
  rtlwifi: rtl_pic_probe():0-0 Can't init_sw_vars.
  rtl8192ce :02:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

  Possible cause:
I figured out that it is probably broken, because of updating the drivers in
the kernel (see
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/log/?h=linux-3.2.yid=e6deaf810cc4b6437d55179660776e131ac059dfqt=grepq=rtl8192ceshowmsg=1)
without updating to the new firmware. That firmware is never added to the
linux-firmware package. (rtl8192cfw.bin dates from 2010).

  Working solution:
Simply copying the firmware, downloaded from the Realtek website to
/lib/firmware/rtlwifi makes wifi work again on kernel 3.2.0-54-generic-pae

Link to the package, containing the firmware:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=48PFid=48Level=5Conn=4DownTypeID=3GetDown=falseDownloads=true#2722

- Please add the new firmware to the linux-firmware package.

2013-10-18 Thread Koen Roggemans
I have tested the setup with 3 different access points and the
connection is fair to good.

I'm not familiar with the process involved in transferring fixed bugs
from proposed to updates.

What time frame do I have to take into account before this happens?
Is there any way I can help in the process?

[Bug 902557] Re: 10ec:8176 Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-10-17 Thread Koen Roggemans
Hi Sirius,
I read through the thread again and for what I found, there is a patch that
went 1/04/2013 in kernel git for kernel 3.2 and then patches that apply to
kernel 3.11 that are too difficult to backport to earlier kernels.
At the moment I'm testing the ones that went in on 1/04/2013 with
linux-firmware that finally made it in proposed.

Very subjective observation: it works better then whit the manufacturers
driver (0007 and 0012). I find it hard to come up with a testsetup and a
way to collect reproducable results. I only had one moment when the
speed dropped badly and that could have been due to my desk standing
full of working laptops.

I tested it up to now with 3 AP's: linksys wrt54gs, linksys wap200 and
unifi pro. It works fine on all 3, except with the unifi I get a weird
message in dmesg of the client: No basic rates in AssocResp. Using min
supported rate instead. The speed seems ok though. Going to ask the
unifi guys why that message shows up on their equipment.

2013-10-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
Very confusing :-(
I see in modinfo, what makes me think it uses rtl8192cfw:
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfwU_B.bin
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfwU.bin
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin

With a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, upgraded to kernel 3.2.0-54,
wireless does not work: error in dmesg Failed to request firmware!

There are a quite a lot of differences with your output, you are right
that the problem lies at ubuntu packaging. While testing this, I noticed
that rtl8192cfwU_B.bin and rtl8192cfwU.bin where missing and requested
by the driver. Copying those in from the Realtek website makes the wifi
work again :-).

[Bug 1239414] Re: rtl8192ce fails to load firmware

2013-10-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
More details:

With a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, upgraded to kernel 3.2.0-54,
wireless does not work: error in dmesg Failed to request firmware!

From modinfo: required firmware:
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfwU_B.bin
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfwU.bin
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin

From Larry Finger I received the list of what is found in the kernel git

rtl8192cfwU_B.bin and rtl8192cfwU.bin where missing and requested by the
driver. Copying those two files from the Realtek website makes my wifi

2013-10-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
Ah, sorry for the typo.
It's sad. I don't dare to guess how much time I've spend on this while it
shouldn't have been a bug at all and the time and energy you have spend,
answering my questions that never should have been asked :-(

I really appreciate your help. I hope everyone learned a little bit.

2013-10-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
@Ryan: it doesn't resolve everything: it just makes the wireless show up again,
rather then not work at all.
The performance is still very poor :-(.
I don't know if Ubuntu ships the latest drivers. The Realtek drivers are not
good either, but seem to last a little bit longer before the connection drops.
It's very hard to get objective data. I contacted Realtek for a comment, but
they don't reply. They probably had enough complainers about this card...

[Bug 1239414] Re: rtl8192ce fails to load firmware

2013-10-15 Thread Koen Roggemans
Sorry, I can't test earlier then Thursday.
It might be worth while to add the other 5 files too that are in the kernel
git. Not necessary for me though.

I notice that synchronising this with
e0836e6ec3568f54b7fac24b9e17bbe8c46eb508 has been done for quantal over
a year ago (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/109671324/linux-
firmware_1.83_source.changes). I know the 3.2.0 is an old kernel to
maintain, but it is LTS and necessary for everyone on Intel Cedartrail
hardware :-(.

[Bug 1239414] [NEW] rtl8192ce fails to load firmware

2013-10-13 Thread Koen Roggemans
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
linux-firmware 1.79.6

Wireless for Realtek rtl8188ce, based on the module r8192ce, is broken
on kernel 3.2.0 since arround release 40.

The error message in dmesg is:
rtl8192ce:rtl92c_init_sw_vars():0-0 Failed to request firmware!
rtlwifi: rtl_pic_probe():0-0 Can't init_sw_vars.
rtl8192ce :02:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

Possible cause:
I figured out that it is probably broken, because of updating the drivers in
the kernel (see
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/log/?h=linux-3.2.yid=e6deaf810cc4b6437d55179660776e131ac059dfqt=grepq=rtl8192ceshowmsg=1)
without updating to the new firmware. That firmware is never added to the
linux-firmware package. (rtl8192cfw.bin dates from 2010).

Working solution:
Simply copying the firmware, downloaded from the Realtek website to
/lib/firmware/rtlwifi makes wifi work again on kernel 3.2.0-54-generic-pae

Link to the package, containing the firmware:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=48PFid=48Level=5Conn=4DownTypeID=3GetDown=falseDownloads=true#2722

Please add the new firmware to the linux-firmware package.

** Affects: linux-firmware (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I found the problem with the 3.2.0 kernel: the linux-firmware package
distributes the old realtek firmware that doesn't work with the new drivers
that went in the kernel on 1/4/2013.
I filed a bug for it:

2013-10-13 Thread Koen Roggemans
I hope I'm looking in the right place
(http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/rtlwifi).
In kernel git I notice that the size of rtl8192cfw.bin is 13540 bytes, while
the one downloaded from the Realtek website is 16192 bytes. It's a bit hard
with those binary blobs and versions :-(, but as far as I can see, the 16192
bytes version works, while the 13540 bytes version doesn't, unless something
else is obfuscating my test results. My card is a rtl8188ee, which seems to use
this binary.

I've been trying to create a DKMS package for 0012.207.2013 on kernel
3.2.0, but I got stuk. Since that is not really a sollution for this bug
(it should just work without compiling and installing drivers from

that on http://askubuntu.com/questions/357047/how-to-create-realtek-

on the same problem.

[Bug 902557] Re: 10ec:8176 Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-09-28 Thread Koen Roggemans
Thanks for the hint -I'll have a look when I can spend more time on this
and report back here.

At the moment the situation for this wifi driver in Ubuntu 12.04 is as follows:
Install Ubuntu 12.04 without updates to end up on kernel 3.2 (for the Atom
N2600 screen driver) gets you to kernel 3.2.0.29 with working wifi.
Upgrading the installation gets you to 3.2.0.54 where wifi is still broken -
not so good for an LTS version.

I found a non official DKMS package for the Realtek 0007.0809.2012 driver,
which performs really bad (slow and grinding to a hold after a few minutes).
When that happens, all wifi on the same access point nearly stops working
(tested with 2 different makes access point and with 2 different wifi cards)
Installing the Realtek 0012.0207.2013 driver is better, but still shows that
slowing down to hold after a while syndrome. The impact on the other devices
seems to be a lot less, but up to now I didn't manage to compile a DKMS-version
from it.

Hi Larry,

Thanks a lot for your work on this. Is there any chance for these improvements
to end up in older kernels?
I'm stuck on 3.2 because of the cedartrail and gva500 drivers that don't exist

[Bug 902557] Re: 10ec:8176 Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-08-24 Thread Koen Roggemans
This is the contents of the folder data/lib/firmware/rtlwifi from the package.
rtl8192cfwU_B.bin
rtl8192defw_12.bin
rtl8723fw_B.bin
rtl8192cfwU.bin
rtl8192sefw.old.bin
rtl8723fw.bin

See also my comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/902557/comments/225
for the origin of the r8192ce package.

Looking at it, I see that that package contains indeed rtl8723fw.bin,
which went now in the kernel.

It's a depressing story. After evaluating the Intel Classmate, I ordered
228 of them. The network adaptor worked in the beginning (before
3.2.0.40), but stopped working before they were distributed under the
students. The r8192ce package solved the problem for a few months...

2013-08-24 Thread Koen Roggemans
According to http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=978551p=4 a
forced reïnstallation of the package solves the problem. Of course only
until the next firmware upgrade. The world is split by languages - I'll
get my best french out.

I don't know if removing the rtl8723fw.bin file from the package would
solve the problem - i'm a complete newbie on the field of package
altering.

2013-08-24 Thread Koen Roggemans
If Sirius1977 has no problem with the rtl8188ce adaptor, then the
problem with this adaptor is only on 32 bit systems. I can't use 32 bit
systems, because there are no 64 bit drivers for the integrated graphics
card on the Intel Atom 2600N.

I can't imagine the working well on Windows/terrible on Linux problem
can be a router problem, since you don't change anything to the router.
A router in mixed mode is in most cases slower. Switch it of if you
don't need it.

[Bug 902557] Re: 10ec:8176 Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-08-23 Thread Koen Roggemans
@ Larry

Additional comment

When I remove the package r8192ce and execute dkpg --configure -a, the
network adaptor doesn't work anymore and doesn't show up in ifconfig.

I agree with Uli: the bug affects 71 people is not solved because one
person buys another card. I have 228 of those cards and I'm not going to
replace them...

I saw this error message a little bit further during the upgrade - may be it's

Re: [Bug 902557] Re: Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-05-20 Thread Koen Roggemans
Someone in the French Ubuntu usergroup created a package with a DKMS
version of the drivers (see http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/wifi_realtek_rtl8192ce)
Here is the download link: http://ubuntuone.com/5lXovIEjNfiZLmN59Rx9Wp

I have them running on a bunch of Intel classmates at the moment. They seem
to work fine and survived the upgrade from kernel 3.2.0-40-generic to
3.2.0-41-generic.

2013/5/17 Uli Tillich 902...@bugs.launchpad.net

 @karneseric
Providing drivers is really up to the manufacturer.

You might have better luck exchanging the WLAN card for a supported
 moddel if you can.

doesn't help. Still no resume

[Bug 982518] Re: Impress crashes every time when clicking on Outline/Note/Handout tab

2012-09-26 Thread Koen Roggemans
I have this problem on LibreOffice 3.5.4.2, using ubuntu classic on 10.04
The proposed workaround works for me: I removed libreoffice-gnome
libreoffice-gtk
It's ugly, but I prefer it working...

Re: [Bug 370935] Re: [IBM 26723G0] hibernate/resume failure

2010-11-14 Thread Koen Roggemans
hm, weird. I missed that. I have indeed a reader build in.
Without your script, my resume fails always when there is a card in the reader.

2010/11/10 Liam Proven lpro...@gmail.com:
Koen: that is interesting but I think you must have a different machine
to me, as mine does not have an SD card reader. I have an SD to CF
converter in its CF slot, but this makes no difference to
suspend/resume, it just generates a 2-line error message when booting or
resuming if no card is installed.

[Bug 370935] Re: [IBM 26723G0] hibernate/resume failure

2010-11-08 Thread Koen Roggemans
I tried your suggestions, but they failed.
I noticed I was still running GRUB 1.5 and took the occasion to upgrade,
without any luck. I think it made the hybernate/sleep function work, but resume
still failed.
Eventually I found a tread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469340page=17) mentioning the
possibility that an SD-card in the card reader could cause the problem and it
was in my case. Using the unmount_sd script on that page, solved the problem
completely with inserted SD-card.

It seems that the bug can have a lot of different causes and solutions.
Hopefully they all get addressed in the code soon.
Thanks for your suggestions

[Bug 370935] Re: [IBM 26723G0] hibernate/resume failure

2010-06-05 Thread Koen Roggemans
I have almost the same on a Lenovo R500, but (following the description
above) the keyboard controller does not reset (no flashing keyboard
lights, and the machine does not power off automatically (backlight of
the monitor stays on too). The computer needs to be stopped the hard way
(pressing the powerbuttton +4sec). On next boot, the best you can get is
a check for corrupted file system :-(
