[Bug 1607783] Re: Fans running full speed on skylake platform

2016-09-03 Thread Magnes
Yes, it might be the GPU fan - since it's on the right side of the
laptop (the fan on the left seems to be controlled just fine), latest
Nvidia Drivers don't help though. It's likely a different bug then, I
will try reporting it to nvidia instead.

[Bug 488247] Re: Inkscape is slow starting

2014-09-22 Thread Magnes
Such long load times make Inkscape unusable for work when you have a lot
of files to look through or modify. There should be an option to fix it
- and not by deleting fonts. For example Inkscape should load fonts in
the background - and only show those that are already loaded.

[Bug 365300] Re: Randomly I get double clicks when I do a single click.

Seems to be a hardware problem: In the Logitech support forum, a
Logitech support staff posted a solution that worked for me. You have to
remove the battery and press the buttons for 30 seconds to remove static
electricity: http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Mice-and-Pointing-Devices

[Bug 1006734] [NEW] Samsung RF511 - background not refreshing in 12.04

2012-05-31 Thread Magnes
Public bug reported:

Adter update to 12.04 I have no wallpaper - instead everything that
moves above the wallpaper leaves a trace on the background - it's not
refreshing. I had the problem in 11.10 but there it was fixed by using
ppa with newer intel drivers, I assumed it will be fixed in 12.04 but it
looks it didn't and that ppa also no longer helps (it's the same on
default intel drivers from 12.04 and on intel drivers from the ppa xorg-
edgers).

Here is screenshot of the problem:
http://wieza.iq.pl/media/screenshot.jpg - after last update though it
got worse - Unity icons are gone and are black. Knowing Ubuntu it's a
random problem and they will be back to normal after I reboot tomorrow
probably though so it might not be the greatest problem.

I can't report it with apport because it crashes.

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2012-02-29 Thread Magnes
Will this be fixed for 12.04? I tried contacting the developer, but got
no reponse. It's critical I think. It's broken on many, many levels.
More recent example how it breaks everything - you can't drag and drop a
movie to OpenShot window from a full screen nautilus or Krusader because
the icon doesn't respond to dragdrop.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-12-22 Thread Magnes
Tablets, phones and some LCDs with pivot have portrait mode in which
launcher on the left takes too much space and is ridiculously high.
Tablets especially are often used in this mode. So if you want to make
Unity for tablets you need to make it movable anyway. (and on phones it
would have to be on the bottom anyway - most new phones are 16:9 and
used in portrait with little space for launcher on the left)

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2011-12-22 Thread Magnes
@Sebastian - I thought it was obvious - the solution Aleksi-ajp wrote is
the only reasonable.

I peaked into the source code and: the change probably needs to be in
Launcher.cpp in unity/plugins/unityshell/src/Launcher.cpp in function
ProcessDndMove. Lack of comments in the code makes it hard to read, but
I think makers of this part didn't anticipate such behaviour so it won't
be simple. This code needs to be changed though:

 else
  {
if (!_drag_edge_touching  hovered_icon != _dnd_hovered_icon)
{
  if (hovered_icon)
  {
hovered_icon-SendDndEnter();
_drag_action = hovered_icon-QueryAcceptDrop(_dnd_data);
  }
  else
  {
_drag_action = nux::DNDACTION_NONE;
  }

  if (_dnd_hovered_icon)
_dnd_hovered_icon-SendDndLeave();

  _dnd_hovered_icon = hovered_icon;
}
  }

  bool accept;
  if (_drag_action != nux::DNDACTION_NONE)
accept = true;
  else
accept = false;

  SendDndStatus(accept, _drag_action, nux::Geometry(x, y, 1, 1));

Quick but dirty solution would probably be changing

 hovered_icon-SendDndEnter();
_drag_action = hovered_icon-QueryAcceptDrop(_dnd_data);

to:

 hovered_icon-SendDndEnter();
  _drag_action = nux::DNDACTION_COPY;

Or maybe changing accept to always true (there is no information what
those mean, so someone who wrote this needs to correct this) - Jason
Smith jason.sm...@canonical.com is written as author, so maybe him?
Should I contact him? Is it OK?

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-12-20 Thread Magnes
@Maarten Kossen: that was really rude. :( What would you say as a right
handed person if the Unity was on the right? For me it would be a
complete disaster, so I understand left-handed people who complain about
the placement. Putting on the bottom or on the top is OK for everyone
but putting on left or right side causes a lot of problems to people who
prefer it the other way.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-12-20 Thread Magnes
You made a huge design mistake in the beginning by not making it
configurable (even if such configuration would be hidden from users it
should be there in case you change your mind or your boss changes his
mind about where to put it). Now we all see how it ended - people want
to move it, you fight because you know you made a mistake and correcting
it will cost you a lot of hours, Mark Shuttleworth agrees with you
because you said to him how many hours it would cost and he doesn't want
to give money for that. Keep that in mind when you are making such
decisions in the future. Making everything configurable makes your job
harder at the beginning but much, much easier in the end.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-12-20 Thread Magnes
this change would cost the same number of hours to make, irrespective
of when it is made - sorry, but I don't believe it. Even if you could
write this in the same time (I think you can't, and I speak from many
years of experience) you lost hours of testing. And if you did it then
many things that you would need to move now (like the menus for icons on
launcher) would have already been movable too. You sound like you lack
manpower - if this is the problem then maybe you shouldn't have changed
so much and sticked to what was available instead of making something
from scratch. (sorry for my English) a OS with a over engineered
Launcher and under-engineered everything else is not very useful -
everything you've done with Unity apart from the launcher is utter crap
(I'm talking about dash) confirmed even by your own testing.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-12-20 Thread Magnes
This again. I'm sorry about my comment but the reason for this is simple
- everything people ask or beg about gets a response find another
distro so the nerves of many supporters of Ubuntu are at the edge. Do
you want people to use Ubuntu or do you want them to move to other
distros? Because I can't recommend Ubuntu to people and I regret
recommending it erlier, because once they see Unity and try (for
example) to move the launcher they are angry at me for recommending
something that doesn't work. I can use Unity and Ubuntu (with
dificulties sometimes) but those people with little technical knowledge
can't - and they could use erlier Ubuntu version without problems. Also
the link you provided  http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/11/user-testing-
of-unity-reveals-some-surprising-results/ - shows how your dash is just
not working as intended. So you lost more time making it that you
could've used to fix things people want fixed.

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2011-12-05 Thread Magnes
Yes, it's still an issue. Why wouldn't it be if this bug wasn't even set to
confirmed even if you can check it in one second.
It's clear and simple - try to drag a PNG file from Krusader to the Unity
launcher to Inkscape icon in the launcher. Thats it. You can't do that in
Unity. Try it for yourself. It just doesn't allow you to do it (and Inkscape is
perfectly capable of using PNG files - you can drag them to the Inkscape window
and it works).

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2011-12-05 Thread Magnes
You can even try to drag from Nautilus (I wrote Krusader because that is what I
use the most). So here is use case:
1. Open Inkscape.
2. Open Nautilus and drag some PNG file to the opened Inkscape window - it
works.
3. Now try to drag the PNG file to the Unity launcher - Inkscape icon is
disabled and you can't drag the file to Inkscape (so if the Inkscape windows is
hidden you can't drag to it).

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2011-12-05 Thread Magnes
The problem is also not only with Inkscape but with many more applications. So
it's not a bug in Inkscape but in the way your Unity disables icons if it
thinks (wrongly) that an application doesn't allow drag and dropping the type
of the file. Some apps open all types of files by the way, why would you
disable their icons?
You can try the same with dragging PNG to LibreOffice Writer icon or even AVI
to OpenOffice Writer icon.

Another example - you can drag and drop ANY file to Krusader. Yet
Krusader icon won't be active when you try to drag something from
Nautilus to Krusader. This thing is just broken. It should allow to drag
to disabled icons OR it shoudn't disable any icon. Someone not thought
this option through.

Some apps take ALL types of files so it's imposibble to correctly report
mimetypes for them. Inkscape probably doesn't report PNG because it's
fileformat is SVG but it takes PNG in drag and drop because it can put
it inside SVG.

[Bug 823199] Re: Drag and drop doesn't show all apps than can use the file

2011-12-05 Thread Magnes
You are very wrong. For example Kate opens all file types when you drag them on
it. Another example is Eclipse where you can add any type of files to project
by simply dragging (but you can't to the icon in the Launcher because of this
bug - so if the Eclipse window is hidden because you are dragging from full
screen app you are screwed). Application can take different types of files
depending on where exactly will you drop them but because of this bug you can't
move the file to their icon to make them show if they are behind other windows.
Eclipse is quite an important application I would think, not a special case.
Another example is Firefox and Google Chrome - are they special cases too? You
can drag ANY file on them (to open it or drag on the upload field to upload it).

Kate might have been a bad example. But you kindly missed Firefox and
Google Chrome. Browsers are the most important applications these days.
Drag and droping to Eclipse is also important for adding files to
project. And don't forget about Inkscape - I don't believe it can have
PNG in supported mimetypes when it can't open them - just load into
existing project.

If somebody is dnding a jpg the goal is likely to open it in an image viewer,
not in a text editor or IDE. - or to gmail.com to attach it, or to Thunderbird
to send it in e-mail or to Inkscape. Why are you assume people are only VIEWING
images? :| No one is using IDE? No one is sending e-mails with attachements? No
one is putting PNG fiels into vector graphics in Inkscape? You said it like you
think it was not important - but it is. Those apps have drag and drop
functionality that makers of those app spend time to built and that
functionality is crippled by Unity because someone decided to take from us one
more function. :|
Sorry about the tone. I only comment on this bug because I'm subscribed to it.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-11-04 Thread Magnes
Richard, as I see it the programmers behind Unity made a project mistake
of not making it configurable at the beginning (probably hardcoding
every thing that should be changable parameter) and now it's quite hard
to change. That is the main reason they don't want to fix it [IN MY
OPINION, based on my observation of this and other discussion on this
topic, I might be wrong] - they probably told Mark Shuttleworth that it
will take a lot of time (not really wanting to do probably, I don't
blame them). He doesn't want it, well because he is paying for this time
and there are other important things to do (or fix) and in the same time
people are mad because they can't move it even if it's in the center of
their monitor setup... It's a mess. I learned quite fast learning
programming that the worst thing you could do is a project mistake - it
often requires rewriting half the project to fix or even to start from
the beginning.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-10-18 Thread Magnes
As a programmer I think it was a project error - if they didn't make the
launcher with ability to move in the beginning now they will have a lot
of work to do to fix it. As a programmer I prefer adding as many
configurable options as I can in the very beginning of making a new
project - I can hide most of them from the user if I think he/she won't
need them. But they - maybe because of overwork or time limits - decided
to not make it configurable practically making themselves much more work
know (If they decide to fix it).

Using xrandr could leave you with all displays turned off. On my

[Bug 761409] Re: Cannot click on left-most indicator on panel if a systray icon appears

2011-09-14 Thread Magnes
Right now I have to be very careful not to close Clementine or Pidgin or
Amule windows because the tray icons are not only not clickable - they
are also not showing at all (to get them to show I have to restart Unity
- but after a few minutes they disappear again). My report about it was
ignored. Ubuntu 11.04 right now is simply not usable - I manage only
because I'm a techperson and can workaround almost every obstacle. But
the 1% will fall to less with the mess that is the most popular Linux
distro. I stopped recommending Ubuntu to people - more, I have to
recommend to them other systems right now (Windows 7 is quite nice for
example).

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-09-09 Thread Magnes
What people are trying to tell - here and on Mark Shuttleworth blog, I
recommend reading the comments there - is that Ubuntu is very bad for
non-technical users. I can confirm it after trying to teach three non-technical
people using it. They were lost, while they done things without problem (and
without me having to explain simple tasks for them) with old Ubuntu.
It's more appealing to the eye - is it, really? The cacaphony of colours on
the launcher hurts my eyes, the dash has insanely huge icons, in my opinion
it's very far from appealing. And like I said the main problem is that is very
hard to get started with.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-09-08 Thread Magnes
Sorry, but right now Windows 7 UI is much better than Unity (look at the
launcher behavior in Windows 7 - it's perfect) and it looks like the
Research is not worth much based by the reactions of users. Maybe Mr.
Shuttleworth should change his designers or researchers because right
now I (and probably many others - even on distrowatch Ubuntu is very
close to losing it's first position) find Unity the worst enviroment
(Android HC being the first to me, Windows 7 second, OSX third). It's
also cacaphony of colours - like it was done by a kid without style -
look how it's done in other enviroments. That is my opinion. I still use
Ubuntu and Unity for now hoping for the best - and because I dislike the
old style desktop (like Windows XP or Xubuntu) even more. But I think
you are close to making even the most patient fans who WANT to like
Unity very close to abandoning ship. How will it fix the bug #1?

Also update manager doesn't really have a reason for asking for password
- it doesn't update yet, it could asked after I choose to do an update.

[Bug 823131] [NEW] Gksudo blocks screensaver

2011-08-09 Thread Magnes
Public bug reported:

Gksudo password dialogs block displaying screensaver. If I left the

diplayed (without entering password) the screensaver doesn't turn on AND
shows after entering the password. It could be damaging to CRT screens
(and some LCDs).

[Bug 823132] [NEW] Autologin requires more password confirmation than normal logging

2011-08-09 Thread Magnes
Public bug reported:

If I choose autologin I want the computer to load without any questions and I
willingly compromise my security on that machine. In Ubuntu though after
autologin I have to write the password TWICE (once for Ubuntu One, the second
one probably for Update Manager) instead of once when logging normally.
Posibble solution: make an indicator for Unity that shows that entering
password is required for unblocking Ubuntu One and Update Manager and don't
block everything until I write them.

[Bug 656519] Re: Alt+Space window accessibility menu should not be accessible by right clicking on a window title bar

2011-08-09 Thread Magnes
Keyboard shortcuts should always have an alternative:
- most people won't even know the shortcut exist (or maybe you want to make a
100 page manual with them?)
- keyboard shortcuts require movement of hands that distract from using the
system with mouse,
- some disabled people could have problems with keyboard shortcuts (requiring
holding two keys).

I was looking forward for new Unity in Ubuntu 11.10. But if this is
changed I'm going to look for another distribution.

[Bug 822539] Re: Unity stopped working after update

2011-08-09 Thread Magnes
Yes, I have this problem in 11.04. If I have nvidia-current installed
Unity (and OpenGL as a whole) doesn't work.

[Bug 822539] Re: Unity stopped working after update

2011-08-09 Thread Magnes
@Ordarney - if you have dual cards (Intel Sand Bridge + Nvidia) then you
can try uninstalling nvidia-current - it helped me (to some extent -
OpenGL and Unity works now but is less stable), but I of course lost the
ability to switch to nvidia with Bumblebee.

[Bug 822539] [NEW] Unity stopped working after update

2011-08-08 Thread Magnes
Public bug reported:

On a Samsung laptop with Nvidia Optimus Unity stopped working after updating
the system. Both cards (nvidia and Intel) are capable of using Compiz and were
working (both - using Bumblebee) before.
The solution (uninstalling Nvidia drivers - just checking it) - will remove the
ability to use nvidia card properly. :(

[Bug 822539] Re: Unity stopped working after update

2011-08-08 Thread Magnes
I found what unity_support_test displayed before:

Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Error: unable to create the OpenGL context

I found it in this bug that seems similar but is closed:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/756583 - the reporter also had a
laptop with Optimus technology (the laptop has both Nvidia and Intel
cards).
