Happened for me with Edgy 32bit.
The included gnu parted 1.7.1 is broken. I created a 2.7 TB GTP partition, and
initialized it with ext3.
On reboot fsck reported that the file system was larger then the partition, and
it was unuseable.
I compiled/installed parted 1.8.8
Typo. I meant GPT instead of GTP in the above comment.

I have been having the same problems: I recently installed Feisty in my
laptop and it would grind to a halt, thrashing until I couldn't do

default install).

I don't think bug 119531 is related to this bug. In that case, grub
wasn't being able to find the correct partition to boot up.
In your case, ubuntu is booting up but failing at logon. I believe it's
something else.
I had once a problem similar to yours at the gui login dialog. I would try to

I did not do anythign particular, just wanted to open another file as a
new layer. The file dialog opened, no directories/files were shown and
the mouse was busy for a few seconds. Then Gimp crashed and closed all
windows. [ubuntu edgy]
