[Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: System policy prevents installing the bootloader

I have the same problem.
$ sudo usb-creator-gtk --allow-system-internal
does the trick for me.

[Bug 1245379] Re: Keyboard layout changes to UK on 13.10

2013-12-13 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I have exactly the same problem. The keyboardindicator was working just
fine, until a while ago. After boot the keyboard layout is US, but the
keyboard-indicator shows BE. When i change it manually to US and back
to BE, the keyboard layout is BE.

This happens to me everytime after boot, so If you want me to run some
commands, ask away.

[Bug 1216600] [NEW] rythmbox freezes randomly when playing song

2013-08-25 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

While playing a .wav song, rythmbox suddenly skips over some parts and
then freezes. If i close rythmbox, open it again and play the same song,

I tried it one more time; now plays normally and at the end, it goes to

2013-08-06 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Hi

While copying many and large files to and from a USB drive, the system
becomes incredibly slow and sometimes hangs. I watched the system
monitor while it was running slowly but cpu was not above 50% at any
time, the same for memory.

I'm using the WD my passport HD with a USB3 port of my ASUS K55VD

1) Aquire many large files (like your totally legit moviecollection)

[Bug 1317032] [NEW] titlebar does not merge with top bar on maximize

2014-05-07 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

The titlebar of firefox and netbeans suddenly stopped merging with the
top bar when I maximize a window. So now, when I maximize firefox, I see
two titlebars. After restarting the program, everything works fine
again.

If you need more information, feel free to ask me; I know a thing or two

know why, so I don't know how to reproduce this problem.

[Bug 1317505] [NEW] EmbeddedBitmap for ttf-ms-corefonts

2014-05-08 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

When opening a mail in gmail that was send by someone with outlook , the
font (Verdana) looks really ugly and broken. This is because for small
font sizes the embedded bitmap is used. The default behaviour should be
to not use the embeddedBitmap for Verdana (and other ttf-ms-corefonts),
since that makes them very ugly.

Workaround: Add following lines to ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf

match target=font
edit name=embeddedbitmap mode=assign

/match

[Bug 1399611] Re: 8086:0046 [Acer Aspire 5742] Screen brightness not working

2014-12-12 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Hi Christopher. Apparently the problem is now fixed in the mainline
kernel. Even if I test it now with the 3.18 rc7 kernel, it is fixed. The
problem is still there if I use the 3.14 kernel, however.

I do not know how this happened. I suspect that after upgrading the
bios, I did not check with the 3.18 kernel, and the combination of new
bios + new kernel fixed it...

1) Do I email the acpi mailinglist to let them know the problem is fixed?
2) Will this fix ever be backported to the trusty kernel?

[Bug 1396723] [NEW] cannot connect to share with username and password

2014-11-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

After configuring a share in my home folder with nautilus, I cannot
connect to the share with my username and password.

Steps to reproduce (fresh install):
1) open nautilus
2) configure share, uncheck guest access
3) click browse network down left
4) go to your computer, try to connect to the newly created share
5) login with the username and password of your account

Expected Behaviour: you can login and see the share
Behaviour I get: Access Denied

If I check guest access, I can connect as guest. I think this has
something to do with your user not being a samba user.

Adding myself as a samba user in system-config-samba solves the problem.

[Bug 1399611] [NEW] Screen brightness not working acer aspire 5742

2014-12-05 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

My laptop does not respond to the screen brightness control after default
Ubuntu install. The following workaround worked: http://askubuntu.com/a/450594
It adds a config file to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

adding acpi_backlight=vendor to boot params did nothing
adding acpi_osi=Linux to boot params only fixed the keyboard shortcuts, but the
screen indicator and the brightness settings dialog stopped working.

Please let me know if this is not the right package, or if you need more
info.

[Bug 1399611] Re: Screen brightness not working acer aspire 5742

2014-12-05 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
removing the workaround (intel.conf file in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/) and booting with the latest vivid kernel
(3.18.0-031800rc7-generic #201411302035) did not fix the problem.

Can someone explain me why the workaround works? Is the brightness
normally handled by the kernel and does my workaround tell the intel
driver to handle it?

Kind regards.

2014-12-08 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Thanks. I updated my bios using freedos (which was surprisingly easy to
do!).

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
V1.30
08/13/2012

This does not fix the problem. If I restart my laptop without the
workaround, the effect is still the same. When I change brightness, I
see the slider changing, but the brightness stays the same.

@Albert, the bq hardware seems to be a bit special in that it turns off

[Bug 1436927] [NEW] Scopes - (web)App communication really clunky

2015-03-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

This is a bug for scopes in general. Please move it if this is not the
correct package.

There is a lot of potential in the scopes concept, but I think the
current implementation leaves much to be desired.

Take the music app/scope as an example. If you want to play a local song
you have two options: Either play it in the scope, or open the real
music app and play it there. I think there should not be a distinction
between these to. Playing a song in the music scope should have the same
behaviour as the rhytmbox intigration in Unity7. Clicking play opens the
music app in the background and starts playing the song. Music controls
are still available in the scope itself.

There is a lot of potential here. If you embrace this concept a bit
more, the music scope can become your everythingplayer. Playing local
music and soundcloud music as if they were all in the same app.. The
scope is only the aggregate of data, the actual playback is handled by
the underlying (web)apps.

There is currently a clear distinction between what information and
actions are app-related and which are not. I thing the scope concept
really suffers from this. Scope should be aggregates of data and
functions, not a portal to different apps.

The music scope is not the only one suffering from this...

[Bug 1436928] [NEW] Music stops playing when on background

2015-03-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Music stops playing when scope is on background. This is really
annoying. There is a lot of potential in scopes, but bugs like this make
it very frustrating. The difference between play song' and open music
app is also confusing and an unrefined experience...

I see scopes as an aggregate of data in apps and websites. When I click
play on a scope, I would expect that the music would start playing in
the actual music app in the background (but still show the play
interface with current position in song etc) in the scope. The same
behavior you have now with the Unity7 music indicator integration.

So this might not be a bug to the music scopes in general but to the
whole implementation of the scope concept. I also filed a similar bug
for unity: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1436927

[Bug 1437925] [NEW] clicking on contact calls contact instead of adding as message recipient

2015-03-29 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts

bug exactly.

Steps to reproduce:

Behaviour I get:
caller app opens with number ready to call that recipient

Expected behaviour:
recipient's number is added to the recipients of the text message.

[Bug 1437923] [NEW] click story contains packages that need root

2015-03-29 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

The Click store contains apps like Race that need you to remount the
root partition as rw, and install some additional packages. These apps
just crash when you don't do that.

This gives a really bad user experience. I suggest two solutions:

1. Remove these apps from the store, require all apps to work on unrooted
devices.
2. Put these apps in a seperate, hidden-by-default category to not confuse
users.

[Bug 1452760] [NEW] Unlocking takes up to 30 seconds

2015-05-07 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

I have this problem a lot on the BQ phone. Please let me know what
information you need from me next time this happens.

When I press the power button to come back from sleep, it can take up to
20 seconds before the screen appears. After that, unlocking the phone
also takes a lot of time, about 5 seconds. Opening the drawer happens
immediately... Most of the time there is only one or two apps open. The
browser has always been open when I had this.

Please let me know what information I need to get next time this
happens!

[Bug 1452766] [NEW] Cannot favorite site when it is loading

2015-05-07 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Simple bug but annoying:

When a site is loading, the favorite star is not visible.

Use-case:
you get a website from a friend, or you click a link on a page when the network
suddenly goes away. You want to save that page to look at it later, when your
connection comes back. This is not possible because you can only bookmark pages

[Bug 1453452] [NEW] Cannot unlock lockscreen

2015-05-09 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

This is something I am experiencing more and more. I am unable to unlock
the screen.

What doesn't work:
- Swiping left or right does nothing. Normally the lockscreen would go away and
I would see the app I was on previously.
- Swiping from the right edge to the left does nothing either.

What does work
- Opening the top menu or the left menu works, however.
- Swiping from the left edge to the right works. This brings me back to the
scopes screen.

After restart, everything is back to normal.

[Bug 1452751] [NEW] Connecting network jump is confusing

2015-05-07 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

BQ phone

Steps to reproduce:
1) go to network settings
2) tap network that is not on top

Behaviour I get:
Network jumps to top. After a while a prompt pops up to request your password.
This can take up to 5 second on slow networks.
This is very confusing. When the network jumped to the top, I wasn't sure if I
tapped it, so I tapped it again. This had the following result: *popup asking
for password appears* *popup goes away almost immediately* *popup comes back
after a few seconds*

Proposed solution:
Immediately after tapping a network, even before putting it on top of the list,
give it an indication of trying to connect either by a different color, a
loading icon, ... (let the design guys figure this out)

Wouldn't it be possible to only load the first few images of the page? And
load/remove the images as you scroll the page... Doesn't other mobile

2015-04-14 19:06 GMT+02:00 Olivier Tilloy
olivier.til...@canonical.com:

I can reproduce on krillin, with the latest vivid-proposed image (#184).

 Relevant output from /var/log/syslog:

So technically, the browser doesn’t crash, but the renderer process is
being killed by the system to free up memory.
The browser should certainly display a user-friendly message when that
happens, instead of just a blank page (tracked by bug #1375272). However I
doubt you’ll ever be able to view that page in its entirety on this device,
 given the memory constraints.

Re: [Bug 1443019] Re: renderer process is killed on image-heavy pages on krillin

2015-04-15 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Thank you for your help!

I have a feeling there are two issues here.

One issue is the case of a page that has clearly too much pictures.
Freeing memory of stuff far outside of view might and showing an error
message be a good solution.

However, I have the same issue after regular browsing for an extended
period of time(10 - 50 minutes). After some time, the page becomes white.
After a restart, I can browse again for about the same period, and then
again white. I don't think it is caused by the individual page. Maybe a
memory leak? What can I do to diagnose this issue?

2015-04-15 11:19 GMT+02:00 Olivier Tilloy olivier.til...@canonical.com:

Just tested on a nexus 10 (that’s the only working android device I have
at hand right now), and the renderer is never killed, but it seems its
available memory is capped (either by chromium itself or by android), so
after a while it stops loading images, silently.

suggest you change the color, or put an icon overlay BEFORE jumping on top,
so it is clear to the user that he tapped it.

In many (obviously inferior) operating systems, the ordering of the
available networks changes while you are scrolling through them, so the
network jumping on top isn't a universal sign that you tapped it.

2015-06-15 9:58 GMT+02:00 Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com:

It would be great if the System Settings network list *was* exactly the
same code as the network indicator network list. Currently they differ
in icon size, spacing, padlock position, and colors vs. checkboxes, so
it would be alarming if one really was a copy of the other.

Anyway, in Ubuntu 15.04 r23, System Settings, the indicator menu, and
the first-run setup all have the bug described: when you select a
network, it jumps to the top of the list before it has even connected.
This is especially jarring when it fails to connect at all, for example
because you don't know the password.

That the network you choose should jump to the top currently isn't
mentioned in the spec at all. It's a good idea -- better than using
checkboxes, at least! -- but if it had been specced in advance perhaps
this bug would have been avoided. Mea culpa.

Status: Invalid = Confirmed

 ** Changed in: ubuntu-system-settings (Ubuntu)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt)

 ** Also affects: unity8 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New

 ** Description changed:

 - BQ phone
 + Ubuntu 15.04 r23

 - Steps to reproduce:
 - 1) go to network settings
 - 2) tap network that is not on top
+ 1. Do any of the following:
 + - open System Settings Wi-Fi
+ - open the network indicator
+ - flash the phone and go to the Connect to Wi-Fi step

+ 2. Tap a closed network that is not on top and that you haven't used
 + before

   Behaviour I get:
Network jumps to top. After a while a prompt pops up to request your
password. This can take up to 5 second on slow networks.
This is very confusing. When the network jumped to the top, I wasn't
sure if I tapped it, so I tapped it again. This had the following result:
*popup asking for password appears* *popup goes away almost immediately*
*popup comes back after a few seconds*

 -
   Proposed solution:
Immediately after tapping a network, even before putting it on top of
the list, give it an indication of trying to connect either by a
different color, a loading icon, ... (let the design guys figure this out)

Re: [Bug 1475568] Re: Use OTA terminology in system settings

2015-07-24 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I do not know if you have that power, but if you want OTA to die you will
have to get everyone on board and present a good alternative that is both
technical and catchy.

From what I've seen, everyone is using the OTA terminology (bug reports,
reddit, community blogs, Canonical blogs) and this is unlikely to change
without a coordinated effort.

I would hate it for the system settings to show one thing and for everyone
to use something else... (which is sadly already the case)

Op vrijdag 24 juli 2015 heeft Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com het
volgende geschreven:
 Thanks for this suggestion.

Ubuntu has never been competent at giving software version numbers: the
Year.Month scheme is routinely misunderstood https://goo.gl/IVxKuA,
LTS vs. non-LTS versions are similarly confusing, and hundreds of Ubuntu
packages are simultaneously incomplete enough to have pre-1.0 version
numbers but somehow complete enough to ship by default (dpkg -l | grep
 0.).

Unfortunately Ubuntu Touch makes this even worse, with at least seven
different data used for identifying an OS version. I'm currently trying
to distill these into a single brief string, that we can display on the
About This Phone screen, that tells you most of what you need to know
to understand things like whether a particular bug is fixed on your
 phone. https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg13955.html

One thing I won't do, though, is add the OTA number as an eighth datum.
Not just because adding an eighth thing would be making the problem
worse rather than better. But also because numbering OTA updates is
meaningless. It made sense while there was only one Ubuntu Touch device
widely available, but that is no longer the case. It is nonsense to
describe, for example, an update as OTA-5 when it is, in fact, only
the first OTA update ever for the Meizu MX4. Update and version are
 words with different meanings.

This is similar to the period before the first Ubuntu phone was
released, where engineers commonly referred to a particular version as
Ubuntu RTM. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-rtm RTM for what,
exactly? Only for the BQ Aquaris E4.5. That's silly in retrospect,
because we've had and will have RTM for multiple other devices.

If you see any engineer in future refer to an Ubuntu version using an
OTA number, please mock them gently.

[Bug 1476571] [NEW] Confusing Wifi settings

2015-07-21 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

I just found out you can see the Wifi password in the system settings.
The reason I didn't find this sooner is because the Wifi settings are
very confusing.

The main problem: The connected network has two detailed views:
1. When connected to a network you can tap the arrow next to the network to see
the ip address and the forget network button.
2. Click previous networks. And click the arrow next to the network. Here you
see more details, like the password and another forget network button.

Proposed solution: Include the information of view 2. in view 1.

   Behaviour I get:

[Bug 1504109] [NEW] Strange generation when COMPOSER_PATH not set

2015-10-08 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Use-case: You are just starting with Charm Layers, made some layers
locally (in JUJU_REPOSITORY/layers) referenced them with layer:mylayer
and generate the Charm. COMPOSER_PATH is unset

What I expect: Charm compose throws an error saying "I couldn't find the
layer remotely and COMPOSER_PATH is unset. Please set COMPOSER_PATH if
you are referencing local layers".

What I get: Charm gets generated without errors. However, there is no
hooks directory, so when deploying the Charm, you get strange errors
such as "unit is not assigned to machine".

Common use-case and common error for someone who starts using charm
layers so the warning should be very informative.

[Bug 1504105] [NEW] Strange error when layered charm destination exists

2015-10-08 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Use-case: You have a "normal" Charm and you start porting it to
composer. You copy the charm from /trusty/mycharm to /layers/mycharm.
You start splitting the charm in layers and run `charm generate mycharm`

Expected result: You get an error explaining that the Charm
/trusty/mycharm already exists, and would be overwritten by `charm

Result you get: The following error message:

composer: Added unexpected file, should be in a base layer:
juju-client/config.yaml
Traceback (most recent call last):

Re: [Bug 1475568] Re: Use OTA terminology in system settings

2015-08-27 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Great! Will the milestones in launchpad be changed to reflect the
corresponding OTA release? I'm not sure this is possible since not all
milestones will be an OTA release?

2015-08-27 17:13 GMT+02:00 Pat McGowan pat.mcgo...@canonical.com:

 After further reflection...

The OTAs are applied to all devices
The OTA number really reflects a minor release of the software
The OTAs have corresponding release notes and bug lists for the milestone
When a new device is released it is based on one of these OTA/minor
 release versions
We occasionally provide what we call a hotfix which is a between OTA
 critical fix.
Build numbers (i.e. r24) are only meaningful on the proposed and devel
 channels, not stable

For the stable channel an OS version of the form Ubuntu 15.04.6 would
very nicely reflect the minor release of software running on any
 device.

The details information could continue to provide build numbers and
underlying component levels which would be sufficient for both hotfixes
 and proposed/devel channels.

However, looking at the system settings' about section on my phone, it
is not clear what OTA update I have currently installed.
   * Is it the version number? I guess not since that number is in its

It would be very handy if the OTA version number was clearly marked

the bug is not fixed on my current device and should be fixed in OTA 4. I

[Bug 1585997] Re: Only show notifications for "primary" email when using categories

2016-05-27 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
@Anupam

It is true that I can still view these emails, however, this would not
solve my use-case.

I archive mails when I've dealt with them or when they require no
action. This means that I have "read" emails sitting in my inbox that
still require my attention and I have "unread" emails sitting in the
archive that don't require my attention. This workflow works really well
with an inbox and makes sure I don't "forget" an email.

I know I can replicate this behavior using some more categories and
better management of emails, but I don't want to change my workflow to
be able to use my Ubuntu Phone, especially because my workflow is the
intended usage of Gmail...

But still, thanks for posting the workaround!

[Bug 1585997] Re: Only show notifications for "primary" email when using categories

2016-05-27 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Only showing notifications for "primary" emails is the default behavior
of the official Gmail apps (android app), so I'd say it is definitely a
bug.

The solution posted on askubuntu isn't the behavior I want nor the behavior
categories is intended for.

I do want to see all my email before I archive it. Mails such as bug
reports, mailinglist updates, new humble bundles etc. are important just
not urgent. I should not receive notifications about them on my phone.
They should however show up as unarchived, unread new email when I open
the app or gmail in the browser. You can "teach" categories which email
is urgent (primary) and which isn't. That's the beauty of this
functionality.

Having the ability to get notified for all email is a nice option to
have as non-default. However, I think the default behavior should be the
same as the official Gmail apps.

Re: [Bug 1440111] Re: Reminder notifications are not integrated into system notifications

2016-02-10 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts

afaik, the status was changed to 'fix committed' because I said I
haven't experienced it in a while; not because a fix was actually
committed

[Bug 1564266] [NEW] Screensaver kicks in on fullscreen app

2016-03-31 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

1) install any Ubuntu desktop edition
2) play youtube video full-screen

Expected behaviour: Ubuntu sees you have an app in full-screen and doesn't let
the screensaver kick in
Behaviour we get: Screensaver kicks in.

This bug can be fixed by adding caffeine to the default Ubuntu install.
Caffeine is an Ubuntu package since 15.10

** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

It has been a while since I experienced this bug. It is possible that it
has been fixed during one of the OTA's.
