[Bug 953221] Re: UMAX Astra 1220U scanner support stopped working

2012-04-17 Thread Michael Nagel
==
Hi there,

thank you for filing this bug and showing your interest in Simple Scan!

This seems to be a Hardware Issue, i.e. Simple Scan does not support
your scanner perfectly -- or possibly not at all.

Unfortunately such problems happen more often then they should, and while it
might indeed be a problem with Simple Scan, in our experience, most of the time
it is not.
This is why we prepared a check-list at [1] that will let you find out whether
or not it really is a problem with Simple Scan and what your options are in
either case.

Please read that list and tell us how you decided to proceed. I will set
this bug to Incomplete, so a friendly robot will expire this bug in 60
days if you do not respond. However, we would really prefer to hear back
from you!

Best Regards
Michael

[Bug 930275] Re: simple-scan crashed with SIGSEGV in __strcasecmp_nonascii()

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Nagel
this is most certainly an issue in the backend and not related to
anything simple-scan does.

as noted in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SimpleScanHardwareIssues
the simple-scan team does not have ressources to debug issues in the
backends. scanning must mork with scanimage and/or xsane before we can
continue. feel free to raise this issue with the hplip and/or sane-
backends developers. you can either file this bug against those packages
or contact them via other means, e.g. mailing lists.

i will close the ticket for simple-scan as we cannot do anything here...

[Bug 978311] Re: Scanning, cutting multiple documents everytime crahes simple-scan

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Nagel
some drivers seem to have problems with receiving more commands while the
scanner is busy.
this probably is a problem with the driver (backend), but it might be that
simple scan is missing a hey, scanner, stop scanning and do the following
instead: ... command.

However, you should read the linked article:

[Bug 575191] Re: simple-scan doesn't scan from HP M1522nf (MFP), while xsane works

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Nagel
This seems to be related to the drivers/backends. These change with
Ubuntu releases independant of simple-scan, and have a tendency to be
rather fragile. Can someone confirm that there is a problem with the
following setup:

- hp scanner (please scpecify exactly)
- Ubuntu 12.04 precise (beta/stable)
- simple-scan, xsane, hplip installed
- running simple-scan, then xsane, then simple-scan again

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 717885] Re: all but one page sent by network scanner are discarded

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Nagel
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: simple-scan

If I press Scan in simple-scan, then scan multiple pages on my scanner
(in this case, a Lexmark X543dn), then only the first page appears in
simple-scan. I can of course press Scan again to scan the next page, but
with a network scanner this is tedious, as I have to enter a code on the
scanner for every page, rather than just telling it to scan another
page, or feeding a multi-page document into it.

[Bug 958394] Re: Simple scan crashed after an extended pause between scans

2012-04-07 Thread Michael Nagel
OK, thanks for your feedback! In sixty days a bot will set the bug to
invalid if there is no further activity.

If I had to guess, I would say there is a problem with the hplip scanner
driver that sometime causes simple-scan to crash. Unfortunately problems
with the scanner driver can easily take down the complete simple-scan
program with the current architecture (instead if just failing to
produce a picture). It might be that simple-scan abuses the interface /
skips some mandatory initialization. Sadly at the moment there is no
manpower to investigate this further, however.

Best Regards

[Bug 961228] Re: wifi stops when Simple scan says error

2012-04-05 Thread Michael Nagel
Scanner Drivers sadly are troublesome with Linux and of bad quality
sometimes, down to the point where they might corrupt the whole usb
stack and affect other usb devices.

Could you try to use xsane or gscan2pdf instead of simple-scan to see if
the problem persists? If it does, the problem most definitely is not
within simple-scan, but deeper down.

2012-04-05 Thread Michael Nagel
If it happens when scanning from the gimp as well, then it is most certainly
not a problem with simple-scan but with sane-backends/the scanner driver. You

[Bug 775060] Re: Random GUI freezes in Natty (can only move the cursor) (might be a segfault)

2012-04-04 Thread Michael Nagel
I am possibly affected by this as well. Here is my description, maybe it
is helpful to someone:

This is a laptop running natty with 2.6.38-13-generic (x86_64) kernel with a
integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor (kernel module: i915).
Occassionally the display stops refreshing (e.g. clock applet does not
refresh), only the mouse pointer can be moved (even so in some cases the mouse
pointer cannot be moved). The laptop does not react on mouse-clicks and
keyboard events (so switching to a tty is not possible). The laptop is still
running and responding, however. Logging in via SSH is still possible and does
not show any suspicious cpu/memory usage and no entries in dmesg/kern.log.
If I kill -9 X, gdm recovers, I can log in again and everything works as it
should (except that all unsaved work is lost). Mouse and keyboard work again in
the newly spawned session.

The problem does not happen deterministically, but I found that copying data
from a LibreOffice calc spreadsheet causes it nearly every time (90% chance).
It does not happen every time, and it happens for other reasons as well.
I have a table with 1000 rows, 30 columns, and copy 2 colums to Firefox, gedit,
... via CTRL-C/V.

Best Regards
Michael

[Bug 942220] Re: Applet chrashes while scanning with HP cm1415fmw

2012-03-11 Thread Michael Nagel
==
Hi there,

thank you for filing this bug and showing your interest in Simple Scan!

Michael

[Bug 950843] Re: simple scan fails to scan. unable to start scan change scan ner gives no options

2012-03-11 Thread Michael Nagel
This really needs to work with scanimage and xsane before it will be fixed in
simple-scan. This most likely is a driver/backend issue and does not require
any change in simple-scan.
Reassigning.

[Bug 806291] Re: [needs-packaging] Boot-Repair

2012-03-08 Thread Michael Nagel
- currently, the .desktop calls the boot-repair executable, which
calls the script that chooses the best su command (e.g. it will call
gksudo boot-repair). Do you know a better way to implement it ?

How about creating an explicit boot-repair-wrapper script that chooses the best
way to get root permissions?
As an additional precautionary action boot-repair itself could check if it has
root permissons and exit otherwise. It would not try to get the permissions
itself, however.
The desktop file would call boot-repair-wrapper.

If you are afraid someone might call boot-repair instead of boot-repair-wrapper
because it has the nicer name, you might name them
boot-repair (for the wrapper script)
and boot-repair-backend or boot-repair-real (for the current boot-repair)

Just a suggestion.
Best Regards!

[Bug 806291] Re: [needs-packaging] Boot-Repair

2012-03-08 Thread Michael Nagel
hmm... i don't see how to comment on the blueprint, so i put this here:

after looking at the code, i think you are basically doing exactly what
i suggested.

i am not sure what Fabrice means with
- I've got the feeling that boot-repair have ot be launched as root. Is it the
case? If so, you should use gksudo or equivalent in the .desktop files

if he means the tool should be run as root, not as user then this is already
taken care of
if he means the request for root privileges should be directly in the
launcher this is not yet the case, because root privileges are only requested
in a subsequent script. i do not know desktop files well enough to tell if this
is a problem, but i do not think so. if it is absolutely necessary to put
(gk)su(do) boot-repair in the launcher, this should not hurt either.
gui-g2slaunch.sh could either just do nothing if it is started with root
privileges or it could (unnecessarily, but no harm) run (gk)su(do) once again...

but i still think everything can be left as it is, because the tool
already requests the necessary rights, even when launched via the
.desktop file that runs boot-repair making it is less obvious that
rights are indeed requested.

What about Simple Scan on Ubuntu Precise AFTER installing xsane on the machine?

I am suspecting that the occurence of this bug depends on the absence of
some configuration and or other software, that is not installed in
Ubuntu (but in Fedora) that an installation of xsane pulls into
Ubuntu...

[Bug 930275] Re: simple-scan crashed with SIGSEGV in __strcasecmp_nonascii()

2012-02-12 Thread Michael Nagel
The scanner driver might be corrupting the adress space, leading to
arbitrary crashes, so reporting more and more issues will probably not
help. More interesting is the system behind it:

- can you try do do the same steps, say ten times. if it crashes all the
time with the same message: thats noteworthy. if it crashes all the time

thats noteworthy but probably the least helpful.

- can you install an old version of hplip and try again?

- can you install xsane and try that?

[Bug 664608] Re: simple-scan crashes when saving to PDF

2012-02-12 Thread Michael Nagel
Hi everyone,

I brought this bug to Robert Ancell's attention. Good thing: he looked
into it. Bad thing: he could not reproduce/debug the issue.

Robert believes this happens due to a corrupted adress space, caused by a bad
scanner driver running in the same adress space as Simple Scan. I do not think
Robert is right, and that maybe some size control information (image size or
the like) returned by the scanner is incorrect, but the adress space itself is
intact, because
a) the pixel data is good enough to be displayed, so it should be good enough
to be saved
b) there are not random crashes, but it happens deterministically when saving a
PDF

So, to see who is right we need the following:
- A description in your own words what exacly you do to recreate (not: me
too) and if it happens in 100% of the cases or just sometimes/most of the
times/rarely/...
- Make, Model and ID (as listed by lsusb) of the scanner
- An apport report might be useful. Enable apport:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport then make the problem happen and report the
issue via apport. Include make, model and id in the description and CLEARLY
STATE that is a reproduction of this bug, #664608 You might need to change the
issue from private to public visibility so we can see it.
- If someone who can recreate -- and has the necessary skills -- could poke
around a bit with gdb that might help...

Best Regards
Michael

[Bug 930173] Re: SANE_STATUS_IO_ERROR

2012-02-12 Thread Michael Nagel
Hi there,

thank you for filing this bug and showing your interest in Simple Scan!

Michael

[Bug 924539] Re: Unable to set front ADF source

2012-02-05 Thread Michael Nagel
Hi there,

did you give the proper arguments to scanimage? did you try xsane?

If this is not really bothering you, and would rather not spend some time
working on this, it is probably not worth the trouble. That message is kind of
misleading...
If you are intersted in debugging the issue, that would be great, of course.
First step is getting it to work with xsane and/or scanimage. Because if it
does not work that way it either, it is very unlikely that is an issue with
simplescan, but a problem with the sane backend.

Best Regards

[Bug 853431] Re: Error with Canon LiDe 30

2012-01-29 Thread Michael Nagel
I am not saying your scanner is broken. With hardware issue I mean it is
related to the cooperation between your scanner and Ubuntu and its
drivers. Using another scanner (other make and model!) would solve the
problem.

First step for locating the problem is to try xsane and to post the usb
id, ... as mentioned in the wiki I linked.
