[Bug 1389434] Re: Tapping doesn't work after resume

2014-12-21 Thread PeterPall
This means the problem could be a syndaemon that forgets to re-enable
tapping? Will disable syndaemon and if that fixes the problem re-assign
the bug to this program, then.

[Bug 1389434] [NEW] Tapping doesn't work after resume

2014-11-04 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

My laptop worked out of the box with ubuntu, which I actually expected so I
didn't even bother to look in the internet if it does before buying it.
There is one thing that is half-broken, though: If I close the computer it goes
into suspend mode. If I open it again it resumes. But like with all other
laptops I could test on after booting the computer's touchpad has tapping and
two-finger-scroll enabled. After the first resume you can click only using the
physical key even if the touchpad works fine otherwise.

Turning off and re-enabling the scrolling functionality in gnome-
control-panel doesn't make scrolling work again.

[Bug 1389093] [NEW] Failed to create Proxy Clip

2014-11-03 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Seems like avconf and kdenlive disagree about the format of the command-
line arguments. Deinterlacing is important for proxy-clips, anyway. The
log tells:

[Bug 1325166] Re: Cannot create proxy clip

2014-11-03 Thread PeterPall
In the failed to create proxy clip there is a show log button. What happens
when you click it?
Or is the problem that nothing happens and no error message appears?

If the message tells you Unrecognized option 'deinterlace'. you have found
Bug
#1389093. If it complains you have no MP3 support you will have to install
every package beginning with libav and ending with -extra instead.
In this case the bug report could be changed into a feature request that
automagically offers to install the right packages or requests the user to do
so. But I have no idea how this might be archived: The background in this case
is that decoding MP3 files might be encumbered by patents in some countries.

Kind regards,
   Gunter.

[Bug 1388738] Re: No cursor while compositing

2014-11-03 Thread PeterPall
Thanks a lot!

Since the last bug that was similar was caused by gsettings-daemon was somehow
lost how it is supposed to tell xserver-xorg it wants to be informed reliably
when the mouse pointer moves I honestly don't know if I assigned it to the
right package: I think it was fixed on gsettings-daemon's side.
... and the credits for the workaround doesn't go to me: Found the solution at
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24970776/the-mouse-works-fine-but-it-does-not-display-in-ubuntu-14-04-arm-beagleboard-xm
after googling for about an hour without using the mouse.

Kind regards,

Gunter.

[Bug 1312594] Re: 14.04 won't detect common USB scanner

2014-09-13 Thread PeterPall
Found a workaround:
The error message rounding interval to 128 microframes, ep desc says 255
microframes seems to be caused by the xhci driver that handles USB3.0 ports.
Using a USB2.0 port works fine. The same happens with some memory sticks and my
Epson Perfection V10 scanner. Will go and buy an old USB2.0 hub to see if that
solves the problem and look if I can somehow link this bug to the kernel since
the problem seems to lie there.

[Bug 1305494] [NEW] noticeable touchpad lag that feels like a low-pass for movements

2014-04-10 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

The touchpad on my new laptop works fine (with multitouch and all) but when I
stop moving my finger the mouse pointer still moves for a quarter of a second
or similar as if a low-pass would filter the movements. Unfortunately this
delay makes it hard not to miss a button at the first try and having to come
back because stopping exactly a quarter of a second before the pointer hits the
button - involves complex timing; When clicking or tapping on the buttons I
don't get any noticable delay.

I know that when using the OS from M$ you can activate a low-pass filter for
movements that is called trägheitsbewegung in the german version of that OS.

Is there a way to do the same on Ubuntu?

Re: [Bug 903399] Re: Regression: 3.2.x-kernels make my system resume immediately on suspend

2013-11-11 Thread PeterPall
Hello, Christopher,

Did completely forget about this bug report.

Kind regards,

   Gunter.

Christopher M. Penalver christopher.m.penal...@gmail.com schrieb:
PeterPall, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not
the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically
you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the
following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.
For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug
description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following
tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for
your
understanding.

Re: [Bug 1226035] Re: wxmaxima crashes at startup (relocation error)

2013-10-21 Thread PeterPall
Not exactly a bug, perhaps. But of you compile wxmaxima with an old version of
wxwidgets and then upgrade wxwidgets - wxmacima is compiled for the old
library. Did run the original code through the compiler again and the result
does not have the problem any more.

[Bug 1216225] [NEW] tracker should depend on a miner

2013-08-24 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

It is possible to install tracker without the package tracker-miner-fs.
But without this package tracker is completely helpless and even unable
to produce a meaningful error message:

tracker-control -S

will crash in this case, the gui tools won't tell that anything is
wrong.

Why this is bad:
 - If on a minimal system the gnome virtual package is installed tracker is
automatically installed without a tracker.

Notes:
 - A google and a package search didn't give a hint that any other tracker than
tracker-miner-fs currently exists. We should be prepared for new miners to
appear, though.

[Bug 1200919] [NEW] /usr/share/cups/drv/cupsfilters.drv broken

2013-07-13 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Did buy a Brother MFC8510 printer that worked out-of-the box (after
changing the protocol the printer is accessed with at
http://localhost:681, that is, since dnssd seems not to fully work for
me, see the warning) but stopped working about 2 months ago. At the same
time /var/log/cups/error_log started to fill with the following warning:

E [13/Jul/2013:14:28:13 +0200] [cups-deviced] PID 2778 (dnssd) stopped with
status 1!
E [13/Jul/2013:14:28:40 +0200] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file
/usr/share/cups/drv/cupsfilters.drv!

moving the file away stopped the warnings and returned my printer to a
working order again.

Will attach the file to this bug report: Didn't find it in apt-cache so
I assume it might be a remains from an old version of an package.

[Bug 1129431] [NEW] Data is added to wrong SD card on Galaxy Note

2013-02-18 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Connect a Samsung GalaxyNote to your computer. It wil automatically appear in
nautilus as ANDROID
 - Click on this device. Nautilus will allow you to select the external or the
internal SD card. Select the external one.
 - Create a directory on the device, delete a directory or try to add a file
somewhere
 - If a homonymous folder exists on the internal SD card the data/directory is
added or deleted there instead of on the external one. If it isn't libmtp9
complains it cannot get the folder information and aborts the action.

I suspect the problemlying on the libmtp side but cannot prove it:
-mtpfs doesn't mount the device but just tell:

nautilus as ANDROID

is added or deleted there instead of on the external one. If it isn't libmtp9
complains it cannot get the folder information and aborts the action.

[Bug 1066542] [NEW] crash or data loss when saving

2012-10-14 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Problem 1:
- Start gscan2pdf
- Open the file attached to this bug report
- try to save it as PDF
Result: gscan2pdf eats up several gigabytes of swap and RAM and then is killed
by the kernel - which is bad, since the file was part of a session saved by
gscan2pdf

Problem 2:
- Start gscan2pdf
- Open the file attached to this bug report
- add other images
- save the result as session
- open the session
Result: gscan2pdf won't be able to open all files of the session even if when
the file the session is in is renamed to something.tgz and opened using e.G.
file-roller all images are there.

Unfortunately I am able to reproduce this bug with loads of images and
using both gscan2pdf 1.0.4 and 1.0.6.

Did only try to reproduce the bug on a 64-bit-system.

[Bug 1064061] [NEW] Lightdm doesn't start if /usr/share/lightdm/remote-sessions is missing

2012-10-08 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Symptoms:
 - Screen goes black after booting and showing the plymouth ubuntu logo and
stays black or
 - screen keeps switching back and forth between text and greaphics mode
instead of showing the login screen

How to trigger:
 - Take a system that has lightdm installed
 - Install gdm
 - select gdm as the new login manager
 - purge lightdm
 - restart the system
 - install lightdm-gtk-greeter (which automatically installs lightdm again)
 - select lightdm as login manager
 - restart the system

Somehow the directories /usr/share/lightdm/remote-sessions and its
parent directory /usr/share/lightdm get lost during this sequence and
aren't created anew when lightdm is installed.

How to recover in the case the problem has been triggered accidentally:
 - start the system in recovery mode
 - grab a root console
 - create the missing directory by typing
mkdir -p /usr/share/lightdm/remote-sessions

Did manage to trigger this problem twice on my computer since I switched
to the developer's version of quantal (64 Bit).

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10

[Bug 828756] Re: getting connection is untrusted warnings

2012-10-08 Thread PeterPall
In quantal the problem seems to be no longer reproducible. Is it still
there in oneiric?

@damien: Normally if you tell the system to remember passwords they are saved
into the gnome-keyring.
If there is no keyring there is no source empathy can getthe passwords from -
except perhaps asking you for the passwords on every start up. Not sure if this
might be your problem.

[Bug 1060861] [NEW] MP3s from amazon are no longer downloaded (Cause: Change on the website)

2012-10-03 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

If trying to buy music from amazon amazon informs the user about a website
change:
Music is now sold using the 1-click method and by defauls saved in the cloud
player that contains a download functionality.
When the order is completed there still is a button that allows to download the
.amz file though, and when clicking on the button it seems like banshee
understands what this file means: A progress bar appears in the left sidebar
and the information that banshee is connecting to amazon.

[Bug 488247] Re: Inkscape is slow starting

2012-09-25 Thread PeterPall
Perhaps this bug can be set to fix committed anyway: I have loads of fonts
installed. But loading a few hundred fonts seems to be much faster than
pre-rendering all the icons.
If loading all the fonts is a bug - or a posible enhancement - we could open a
separate issue for that, instead.

That would make sense: if the program is run non-interactively or a new

is quite fast.

I'm not using unity, but gnome-shell which is quite usable - if you install
about twenty extensions along with it.
But as far as I know all the package does is hiding the scrollbars when you
aren't scrolling and the mouse pointer is nowhere near the point the scrollbar
would appear.

[Bug 1024750] Re: Calibre crashes the window manager on start-up

2012-07-21 Thread PeterPall
Did install xtrace - but something seems to be wrong:

#echo $DISPLAY
:9
#xtrace -c -D:10 -d:9 Calibre.txt
Error parsing xauth list data: less than three things in a line!

Does anybody know how to use it?

Re: [Bug 1024750] Re: Calibre crashes the window manager on start-up

2012-07-19 Thread PeterPall
Hope the collection of data about the bug worked.
In the meantime I got the old error message again:

Window manages warning: Window 0x4200013 (calibre - ) sets an MWM hint
indicating it isn't resizable, but sets min size 16383 x 16383 and max
size 2147483647 x 2147483647; this doesn't make much sense.

A window this big that doesn't fit in the graphic's card's memory seems
to be a plausible reason for a crash.

Still it seems like the whole X server isn't always crashed:
Going to a console, killing the window manager, killing calibre (this
step is important, otherwise the window manager will immediately crash
again on re-launch - setting the DISPLAY variable to :0.0 and starting
the window manager again usually renders the system usable again.

Kind regards,

  Gunter.

2012-07-18 Thread PeterPall
Thanks a lot!

I Already have installed unity for the test - but will be able to do the
actual test tomorrow since today I have a task running on my computer I
don't want to risk to crash.

Kind regards,

   Gunter.

[Bug 1019840] Re: autocrop removes to much of the image at the bottom

2012-07-09 Thread PeterPall
On my computer it happens with all DVDs.

Steps to reproduce:
 - Open a DVD or DVD structure (the source of the input data doesn't seem to
matter)
 - Press Extract
 - Press Autodetect (or directly press Extract which starts an autodetect
step anyway.

Arithmetics/Film Generazione 1000 EURO
 - Black border at the top of the film: 12 pixels.
OGMrip rounds this number up to 16-which is good because ogmrip tends to get
really slow if the crop amount isn't dividable by 8.
 - Black border at the top of the film: 12 pixels.
OGMrip rounds this number up to 32.

Haven't been able to find any frame that actually has more than 12
pixels of black border at the bottom - but didn't expect any frame to
have a 32-pixel border: The problem has been triggered by all of my DVDs
so far.

Problem affects not only geeqie but also shotwell - so it is most
probably due to a limitation in the library doing the jpeg handling for
both programs.

[Bug 1019840] [NEW] autocrop removes to much of the image at the bottom

2012-07-01 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

After the last 8 disks I have ripped (the first DVDs I've ever bought seem to
arrive at thei end-of-life) I am pretty sure that

 - but at the bottom ogmrip seems to over-estimate how much it has to crop
exactly by the amount of video data that is cropped at the top of the video.

[Bug 1016814] Re: arista-gtk crashes on selecting an input file

2012-06-23 Thread PeterPall
Did attach one example-file to the bug that triggers the problem for me.
Seems like any file will do, though: Tested it with a .flv file and .vob
files from an unencrypted DVD first.

How to reproduce the crash:
 - start arista-gtk
 - press the create conversion button.
 - Press the Source (none) button
 - choose a file
 - press OK.

arista-gtk crashes immediately.

Since segfaults occoured on my old intel atom netbook, too, the problem
might be architecture-indipendent.

** Attachment added: A file that crashes arista-gtk on my computer.

[Bug 1013973] [NEW] Maximum image size too small since change to quantal

2012-06-15 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

I frequently make huge jpeg images using hugin. In ubuntu natty, oneiric
and precise I was able to view them using geeqie. In quantal I get a
black image insteadand the preview is filled with static; Seems like
what triggers the bug is the size of the image in pixels, not in
megabytes.

Will attach a huge jpeg image to this bug report you can try to
reproduce the bug with.

[Bug 1012858] [NEW] Sending of message failed dialog needs 100% of one CPU as long as it is open.

2012-06-13 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Priority: Low
How to reproduce:
 - Attach a large file to a message to make the sending process need enough
time for the third step.
 - press the send button
 - Interrupt the internet connection before the sending of the message can be
completed
Problem:
The Dialog that pops up now telling the message could not be sent creates 100%
CPU load for one CPU.
What was to be expected:
The dialog pops up and does not need any CPU power until a button is clicked.

[Bug 1007149] Re: Cannot mount encrypted devices

2012-06-11 Thread PeterPall
You are completely right: I seem to encounter a completely different problem
than I expected:
My system setup is the following:
 - /dev/sda is a hard disk (2 partitions) comtaining my encrypted home folder
and my swap partition.
 - /dev/sdb is a small SSD containing my system (/dev/sdb1) and a folder I want
to keep backups in just for the case my hard disk breaks.

The memory stick I tried to verify the problem with before I reported
this bug seems to be severely broken - and it clearly is a hardware
fault. Did try your commands with one of my girlfriend's memory stick
and the stick was mounted. Then I unmounted the stick, re-inserted it to
the computer and after typing in the passphrase it worked, either. So I
formatted /dev/sdb2 using luksformat - and got the following results:

udisksctl unlock -b /dev/sdb2
Passphrase:
Error unlocking /dev/sdb2:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Error.NotAuthorized: Not authorized to
perform operation
gunter@lore:~$ sudo udisksctl unlock -b /dev/sdb2
Passphrase:
Unlocked /dev/sdb2 as /dev/dm-1.

Having your commands as a starting point debugging the problem further
was easy:

1.) The system claims to want a passphrase twice but for mounting my hard disk
partition it needs both my login passwort and the partition's passphrase. When
I insert the stick only the passphrase is needed.
2.) After partitioning the stick and formatting its second partition with an
ext4 filesystem using luksformat (the first partition is unencrypted ext4) I
still don't need my password to mount the stick. So the problem doesn't seem to
be that I formatted the second partition using luksformat.

This means my problem was that for mounting a encrypted hard disk
partition my password is needed as well as the luks passphrase whereas
for a stick only the latter is needed. A week before i wrote the bug
report this wasn't the case.

not only asking me for the passphrase of the device

** Summary changed:

- Cannot mount encrypted devices
+ Mounting encrypted hard disk partitions now asks for the root password.

** Description changed:

The default mount point for memory sticks, sd cards etc. has changed
  from /media/filesystemlabel to
/run/username/media/filesystemlabel. At the same time my encrypted
- media stopped being mounted. I still get prompted for the password,
- though. Once by the gnome-shell and once by a dialog. Did try to format
- a device using luksformat to double-check that both gnome-keyring and I
- don't suffer a password-specific amnesia but even with a known-good
- password I get the same result.
+ hard disk partition (formatted with luksformat) started asking for my
+ login password in order to be mounted.

- Encrypted home directories are not affected as should be encrypted
- system partitions.
+ If this is the desired behavior from now on please feel free to close
+ the bug as invalid.
