[Bug 671507] Re: Evolution lost Ubuntu One contacts, there still in the Couchdb database though

2011-03-10 Thread PeterPall
Ok... found a workaround for my system:

- Close evolution
- killall e-addressbook-factory
- /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook--factory
- Start up evolution again.

...and all ubuntuone addressses will be there until the next reboot.

[Bug 575937] Re: Can't synchronize Tomboy Notes: Server returned 404 NOT FOUND

2011-03-05 Thread PeterPall
Had to recover my tomboy again from this bug - which I triggered by
making my couchdb reauthenticate at the ubuntu one server by the
standard method from freedesktop.org. Hoped it would repair contact
sync. But at least found a way to recover tomboy that is relatively
easy:

- Start gconf-editor
- unset the key /apps/tomboy/sync/sync_selected_service_admin
- unset all keys in /apps/tomboy/sync/ubuntuone
- Restart tomboy
- Set up syncing with ubuntu one again from tomboy.

[Bug 727995] [NEW] evolution won't sync with ubuntuone on natty

2011-03-02 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-couchdb

Evolution won't sync with ubuntuone on my computer. Did remove all
passwords from the keyring, restarted couchdb and everything. But no
success. Syncing tomboy notes (using couchdb, too) works fine, file
sync, too. The rhytmbox plugin doesn't appear. But I don't know if due
to the same reason.

In the end I found out that
killall addressbook-factory
/usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

provides output that might contain the solution. Attached the output of
a contact lookup to this bug report.

[Bug 725734] [NEW] Group/tab plug-in does not work in natty

2011-02-26 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-plugins-extra

On my current natty installation I seem not to be able to group and/or tab
windows even if the group/tab plug-in is checked in ccsm.
Normally I use this feature when writing LaTeX texts: It allows me to put the
pdf viewer at the back of my emacs - and if I press the change tab hotkey the
window switches between source and pdf output.

[Bug 445781] Re: Cannot access Ubuntu One contact address book from Evolution

2011-02-26 Thread PeterPall
Think it is today's service disruption. But after switching to the
services tab in the ubuntuone control center I get the following
result:

gunter@book:~/$ session --print-reply --dest=org.desktopcouch.CouchDB /
org.desktopcouch.CouchDB.getPort
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network
connection was broken.

If I don't actually try to use couchdb before this command returns a
port number instead.

Another thing that seems to indicate a failure:
If I go to the URL
file:///home/(username)/.local/share/desktop-couch/couchdb.html

the page I get redirected to returns the following error messages:
Server information could not be retrieved: TypeError: $.httpData is not a
function
An error occurred retrieving the list of all databases: TypeError: $.httpData
is not a function

[Bug 724640] Re: Pairing couchdb with ubuntuone seems to depend on avahi-daemon

2011-02-25 Thread PeterPall
Hey, I was right: Pairing couchdb (that synchronizes the evolution contacts

Changing the title of the bug.

[Bug 445781] Re: Cannot access Ubuntu One contact address book from Evolution

2011-02-25 Thread PeterPall
Oops... ...sorry. Did everything *except* restarting evolution-data-
server:

On my computer the directory /usr/lib/evolution/2.32/ does only contain the
following four programs:
 - evolution-addressbook-clean
 - evolution-alarm-notify
 - evolution-addressbook-export
 - evolution-backup

After the last few updates desktopcouch has started working together flawlessly
with dbus:
gunter@book:~/src$ dbus-send --session --dest=org.desktopcouch.CouchDB
--print-reply --type=method_call / org.desktopcouch.CouchDB.getPort
method return sender=:1.100 - dest=:1.126 reply_serial=2
   int32 47197

So the bug probably should be named evolution-data-server missing on
natty: I have installed the homonymous package (evolution-data-
server). And to make completely sure I have also purged evolution-data-
server and evolution-data-server-common along with evolution itself
(don't do this at home: It will uninstall all the things that keep
network-manager working so re-installing these tools is only possible
for an experienced user) and re-installed the packages again: My
original problems with ubuntuone were caused by the fact some files were
missing after my first attempt to install them. But even that didn't
provide me with a the right binary.

Attached a list of all files containing evolution-data-server that are
installed on my system.

[Bug 724638] [NEW] evolution won't sync with ubuntuone

2011-02-24 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-couchdb

Got sync of files and everything working with ubuntu one. But if I
choose the ubuntuone address book in evolution I get: Errorloading
address book: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBUS.Error.NoReply:Message did
not receive a reply (timeout of message bus)

Strangely enough since I have installed avahi (on which desktopcouch
seems to depend on to be able to pair with ubuntu) desktopcouch seems to
work:

[Bug 724640] [NEW] Pairing couchdb with ubuntuone seems to depend on avahi-daemon

2011-02-24 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-couchdb

On my system pairing my desktopcouch with ubuntu one always seemed to
fail until I installed avahi-daemon. I assume that making evolution-
couchdb not dependent on avahi-daemon is a bug - but since I had loads
of problems getting ubuntu one to work perhaps this has to be verified
by someone else.

To verify this
 - uninstall avahi-daemon
 - try to start desktopcouch-pair and to unpair and pair with ubuntuone.
If I am right this will not work.

To make pairing work again install avahi-daemon again.

[Bug 724134] [NEW] Ubuntuone-client doesn't sync files

2011-02-23 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Loads of symptoms:

ubuntuone.control-panel-gtk:
1.) Does login to ubuntuone and can read the contract type but gets a file
sync error
2,) The devices-tab clains that the data cannot be read
3.) The cloud folders list is empty

4.) Nautilus doesn' thave a synchronize with ubuntuone context menu
entry

5.) The add files and add folders buttons on the ubuntuone homepage
are dead.

The solutions I have found in other bug reports didn't work.
Trying to remove the authentification data from the keyring, deletion of my
devicefrom the devices list from he ubuntuone webpage.

Afterwards the ubuntuone support (cool thing: the guys reply fast to
mails!) Did do that before and after today's update:

gunter@book:~/tex$ u1sdtool -q
ubuntuone-syncdaemon stopped.
gunter@book:~/tex$ rm -rf ~/.config/ubuntuone/
gunter@book:~/tex$ u1sdtool -c

Oops, an error ocurred:
Traceback (most recent call last):
Failure: dbus.exceptions.DBusException:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process
/usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon exited with status 1

Starting syndaemon manually gave the same error, too:
gunter@book:~/tex$ /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon
Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon, line 187, in module
main(sys.argv)
File /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon, line 80, in main
logger.configure_logging(options.logging_level,
AttributeError: Values instance has no attribute 'logging_level'

Then decided that python cannot be too complicated and did replace line 80+ of
/usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon that read

logger.configure_logging(options.logging_level,
 options.logging_file_size,
 options.logging_backup_count)
with:
logger.configure_logging(1,
 1,
 2)

Replacing only any two of these variables made python complain that the other
two don't exist.

30 seconds after /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon was
started manually again I was informed that the sync was complete and
everything including the nautilus integration started to work.

[Bug 709156] Re: nm-applet often crashes on natty when apt-get dist-upgrading

2011-02-03 Thread PeterPall
Am using natty. (normal ubuntu) and I don't think unity does any good.
So I am using compiz with loads of effects enabled and the ordinary
gnome-panel.

The network manager applet seems to crash a few seconds after the crash has
been triggered. But this time I updated my system it seems like the second of
these two lines killed it:
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for python-support ...

Reinstalling the network manager with the command line you proposed does output
the following:
(Reading database ... 210758 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace network-manager-gnome
0.8.3+git.20110114t131931.fd589a7-0ubuntu5 (using
.../network-manager-gnome_0.8.3+git.20110114t131931.fd589a7-0ubuntu5_i386.deb)
...
Unpacking replacement network-manager-gnome ...
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
Processing triggers for python-gmenu ...
Rebuilding /usr/share/applications/desktop.en_GB.utf8.cache...
Processing triggers for hicolor-icon-theme ...
Processing triggers for gconf2 ...
Processing triggers for python-support ...
Setting up network-manager-gnome (0.8.3+git.20110114t131931.fd589a7-0ubuntu5)
...
At the end of this process nm-applet crashes for me, again. Although it does do
this only every fourth time or so. The fact if there is any network load seems
not to affect this behavior.

Another hint might be that in order to access my WLAN I have to use the
bcmwl package. But this package contains a dkms kernel module that
doesn't use python or similar...

Did crash again.This time during:

Processing triggers for python-central ...
Setting up jockey-gtk (0.8-0ubuntu5) ...
Processing triggers for python-support ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin ...

Processing triggers for menu .

So if exactly one of these did trigger the problem the following packages are
left:
 - python-support

 - menu

[Bug 709156] Re: nm-applet often crashes on natty when apt-get updating

2011-01-28 Thread PeterPall
Only to make sure this is the bug I experience: The
sudo apt-get update
doesn't crash the network manager.
A sudo apt-get dist-upgrade does, though.

Still investigating if this is triggered by any post-installation script
that is commonly run. The last time nm-applet crashed on my computer the
post-installation scripts did output the following messages:

Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
ureadahead will be reprofiled on next reboot
Processing triggers for menu ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for python-support ...

[Bug 700176] Re: bcmwl bcmwl-kernel-source 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu1 fails to build

2011-01-09 Thread PeterPall
The Unknown symbol in module I got when trying to compile bcmwl with
the headers from linux-headers-2.6.37-11-generic instead of the linux-
headers-2.6.37-12-generic that would have matched my kernel. Another
time I got this message was when after installing a new kernel I tried
to compile the module for the new one --- and the Makefile compiled it
for the old one, instead. Seems like the tracking which kernel to
compile the module for is somehow critical. Don't know if that can help
you; The missing MODULE_LICENSE does AFAIK just indicate that the module
does claim not to be GPL (which is a choice made by the creator: It
hinders the module from being debugged and thus from being reverse-
engineered) but does not tell which license it conforms to, instead. So
this message should be therefore just a administrative matter.

[Bug 697233] [NEW] [needs-packaging]: samsung-utils

2011-01-04 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Brightness control is broken for Samsung netbooks which is bad, since
after resume the screen backlight defaults to off.

https://launchpad.net/~voria/+archive/ppa/+packages

contains all the dkms modules needed to make the brightness keys work
and to fix the awful screen stays black after resume bug along with
all the scripts that are needed. Please package them for the real
distribution.

[Bug 683775] Re: Natty Alpha 1, i915 has blank screen after boot

2011-01-01 Thread PeterPall
Don't like unity. I rather use compiz. Or even the classical gnome
session with metacity that is more fit for a user that uses more than a
handful applications regularily.

...anyway... If you can see anything on the screen (and you told you did
at least get a mouse cursor) you have most likely found a separate bug.
On my computer I got a perfectly black screen when I turned on my
computer - and the screen stayed perfectly black all the time.

---

Another question: Seems like the fix for this bug has been released now.
Is anybody in here against closing it?

Got a similar problem. Wonder if it is identical to the one described here:

to be able to reproduce the error.

2.) For some reason with kernel 2.6.37-11-generic the following command:
install -D -m 755 wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko
won't install the driver somewhere modprobe will find it - even if it doesn't
output any error message and the uname -r clearly returns the right path. If I
manually replace the uname with a path:
sudo install -D -m 755 wl.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.37-11-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko
installing the driver works.
Does anybody understand what is going wrong here?

2010-12-18 Thread PeterPall
A second piece off odd behaviour: If my N210 Plus blanks the screen
after being idle for a certain time it manages to turn off the lights.
But switching them on also needs the setpci mentioned above.

Did change the contents of the debian/ folders of the trunk of mp3splt-
gtk so debuild won't report any warnings any more - at least if the
newest entry of debian/changelog is valid. Also volunteers provided a
spanisch and czech translation for the program.

[Bug 691425] [NEW] Samsung N210i915/Intel N10/:Screen stays black after resume + setting brightness won't work

2010-12-16 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

On a fresh install of Ubuntu my new Samsung N210 plus netbook worked like magic
with one exception:
If I close the lid it suspends or hibernates and if I open the lid again it is
up in half a second - but the screen stays black.

Found a blog that told to try a

setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=brightness

(actually even if the writer of this blog did own the same netbook his
graphics card was at a different pciid; Brightness ranges between 00
(off) and ff (full brightness). And since this change worked I added a
file named

/etc/pm/sleep.d/99_LightsOn

with the following contents:

#!/bin/sh
case $1 in
resume|thaw)
/usr/bin/setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=50
;;
esac

which resolved the case for me.

Since setting the brightness by the brightness keys won't work either
and booting with the noapic or the nolapic option will lead to a
complete black screen with backlight off, too, I assume it is a kernel
bug. But feel free to reassign at will.

[Bug 685445] Re: grub2 sometimes fails to boot

2010-12-11 Thread PeterPall
Today I seem to have encountered the problem even if the line

GRUB_TERMINAL=console

of the file /etc/default/grub wasn't commented out and even if I ran

sudo update-grub

after making this change -which seems to indicate that it might not be a
graphics-related problem after all.
Can anybody confirm this?

hangs prior to loading the kernel. To make sure it really doesn't load the

the shift key pressed. About every tenth time the computer hung instead of
displaying a boot menu. Sometimes the screen stays blank except of a blinking
cursor, sometimes it just stays blank (but the backlight is on) - and one time
the display faded in a way that seems to indicate that the LCD matrix is no
more accessed by the graphics card.
+ my system rarely (Tried to start the system 30 of which it happened 3 times)
hangs prior to loading the kernel. Note that around the begining of December
2010 there was a kernel bug as well that could lead to a black screen *after*
the kernel was loaded (Bug #683775). To make sure the kernel really doesn't

[Bug 683775] Re: Natty Alpha 1, i915 has blank screen after boot

2010-12-06 Thread PeterPall
In my experience some package mirrors need a few days to update all
packets. http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com started to include the new kernel
yesterday. Since then every time the kernel was loaded 12 seconds later
I got the login screen as I am used to. And this with a slow intel atom
processor. Thanks a lot!

2010-12-04 Thread PeterPall
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 683775 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/683775

Did install the test kernel and rebooted the system 10 times. Except for
the one time it did a routine check of all file systems it was up in 12
seconds every time = Will mark this bug as a duplicate of #683775

Then tried to boot 10 times whilst pressing the shift key. Nine times I
got prompted which kernel I wanted to boot and one time the system hang
up like I described above. Don't know if it is worth reporting this as a
separate bug since it - at least on my system - occours very rarely and
natty including its grub2 version is in a stage that is early enough
that this kind of thing is to be accepted.

Loads of thanks,

 Gunter.

times th screen stays black after booting.
The background light of the screen still goes on and off at every video mode
change. And I am able to open a terminal whenever I want, to reboot the
computer and even to play a ogg/vorbis file - so the computer basically works.
But the screen stays black and blank.

In another 30% of the times grub-pc hangs completely without even
loading the kernel or displaying the boot menu if I press the Shift key
during boot. Sometimes in this case the display fades in the way that
indicates that the light is on - but it is no more accessed by the
graphics card.

If I uncomment the

GRUB_TERMINAL=console

and do a

sudo update-grub

afterwards the computer is up in 12 seconds and runs fine.

This problem is relatively new (about 2-3 weeks) and reproducible both
with plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo and plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text.
Uninstalling plymouth at all seems no longer to be supported on natty.

[Bug 677946] [NEW] [needs-packaging] mp3splt-gtk 0.6

2010-11-20 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mp3splt-gtk

Ubuntu still contains mp3splt-gtk 0.5.3, while on the homepage of the
program (mp3splt.sf.net) there are Ubuntu packages of version 0.6.0

Enhancements that I know of: Loads of bug fixes in respect for broken mp3 and
ogg files.
Future development: The trunk (which will as far as I know one day ill be
released as version 0.6.1) contains nautilus integration, a gnome help system
page and more menu entries fo fit more seemlessly into a gnome environment.

[Bug 677417] [NEW] Firefox is slow if automatic detection of proxy is on, but there is no proxy

2010-11-19 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

How to reproduce the problem:
- Connect to a network that doesn't provide a http://wpad/wpad.dat file with
proxy settings
- Go to Edit/preferences/Advanced/Connection settings and turn on automatic
proxy detection

From now on Firefox 4 tries to download the proxy settings from
http://wpad/wpad.dat every time you click on a link. And it every time
waits for the timeout of the domain name server telling there is no
http://wpad before proceeding to downloading the actual internet page.

Not really a bug, maybe. But makes surfing in the internet extremely
slow and is at the same time hard to hunt down; Did never experience
this with Firefox 3 but - did never actually connect the network before
I am in right now.

[Bug 640287] [NEW] The 'T' attribute of the /home directory should be set

2010-09-16 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-files

Detailed background:
One of the things the outstanding performance of a linux system is based on is
the highly-optimized file system that does not only try to optimize the process
of finding where a certain file can be found or try to keep fragmentation low
so the whole file can be read in one chunk without the need of moving the hard
disk's read head during the process. It also watches tiny details. For example
it watches that the physical distance between the contents of two
subdirectories of the same directory on the hard disk is kept as low as
possible, too.

For most directories this makes sense:
/etc/network/if-pre-up.d will be used shortly before /etc/network/if-up.d is,
so making the distance the hard disk's read head has to cross in order to move
from one of these directories to the other small is a good idea as is keeping
the whole directory structure ~/.firefox as physically compact as possible.
It also makes sense to keep the contents of the home directory of any
individual user as physically compact as possible. In the ideal case the files
from the user foo are in one very compact part of the hard disk, and the files
owned by the user bar are in another very compact chunk of the hard disk.

There is one exception of this rule, though:
It does not make sense to make the individual subdirs of /home to be as close
to each other as possible since this would mean that the file system has to
choose if it wants to keep this file from the user foo as close as possible to
that file from the user bar --- or if it wants to keep this file from the user
foo as close as possible to the other files from the user foo. Which in turn
makes the files of the user foo to be spread over a bigger part of the hard
disk than necessary.

Poposed enhancement:
add a
chattr +T /home
to the post-install-script. This allows the file system to put every
subdirectory of /home into a different physical place on the hard disk ---
which in turn allows it to to keep each of these physical places as compact as
possible.

Source:
The manpage of the chattr command (chattr(1)) contains the following paragraph:
A directory with the 'T' attribute will be deemed to be the top of
directory hierarchies for the purposes of the Orlov block allocator.
This is a hint to the block allocator used by ext3 and ext4 that the
subdirectories under this directory are not related, and thus should be
spread apart for allocation purposes. For example it is a very good
idea to set the 'T' attribute on the /home directory, so that
/home/john and /home/mary are placed into separate block groups. For
directories where this attribute is not set, the Orlov block allocator
will try to group subdirectories closer together where possible.

[Bug 606864] Re: Automount of encrypted medium at login doesn't work

2010-09-13 Thread PeterPall
It is still there, but has changed slightly:

- I boot my computer with an encrypted memory stick attached. According to
lsusb the memory stick has been recognized but unlike an unencrypted media it
is not mounted
- I remove the stick and attach it to the USB port another time. It is
instantly mounted, and works fine.
- I suspend the computer. Unlike about a month ago the mount point of the stick
doesn't disappear, but if I enter a directory there and try to read it (i used
the ls command for doing this) i get a
ls: reading directory .: Input/output error
so suspending still doesn't work. 2 minutes later the desktop icon's name of
the memory stick changes from the label of the filesystem to 7.9GB encrypted
media.
- Unmounting the stick still doesn't remove its /dev/mapper/something entry
- and if I remove and plug in the stick again I am instantly asked for the
password but mounting it doesn't succeed.

[Bug 627134] Re: Ghosts of pointer's past (ruler refreshing problem)

2010-09-12 Thread PeterPall
The same here with the Nodoka theme. Since this kind of issue loads of
times is caused by the X server: lspci for my video card gives me the
following line:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Killing compiz or setting the desktop effects to none doesn't make the
triangles inside the ruler indicating the pointer's position to be
removed before being moved to a new place, though. Refreshing the window
or minimizing it won't help, either.
