OK - I agree 1) For me the floppy appeared after the upgrade to Quantal Beta1 - There was no floppy visible before even on VMWare - but I was willing to accept that believe that it might have been an issue with an update to either Open-VM-Tools or VMWare's vmtools (VMwareTools-8.8.4-743747) 2) The 'unlocked from launcher' issue now seems to have been fixed after some updates to Ubuntu not VMWare. [Bug 1054414] Re: Quantal Attempts To Mount Non-Existent Floppy Drive (if BIOS indicates there might be one)
Since this is appearing on purely physical machines (not just VMWare) - it seems to be an issue with the way Ubuntu deals with what appears in the BIOS. I went into the VM machine's BIOS and [Disabled] the reference to the [Disabled] the Floppy A. Now a Floppy no longer appears in the list of Linux Devices. Could it appear that somewhere during the upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 the code was modified to enhance performance of the boot up process. Maybe somewhere in there Ubuntu now accepts that there is actually a floppy hardware device there just cause BIOS says so - without actually testing to see if there is one ? The 'unlocked from launcher' issue now seems to have been fixed. The launched Icon can be removed - and it stays removed even after reboot. [Bug 999526] Re: Cannot login from lightdm, /tmp is not writable
I had the problem after the upgrade from Percise to Quantal Beta1. It did not happen during the upgrade from Percise to any of the Quantal Alpha versions. For me the GUEST account login was successful, but useless because I was unable to elevate privileges using sudo (unable to change to sudoers gid: Operation not permitted) - so I could not troubleshoot the problem. My work around was to create a second administrator account called 'toad2' right after the upgrade but before the required reboot. I was then able to log in using the new toad2 user account but not the original toad account created using Precise. Oddly - when I am attempting to login - I can click on the various user accounts displayed in the Unity Greeter (lightdm) and I see the appropriate wallpapers displayed as I switch back and forth between users. That seems like a good sign, but I still get bounced back to the Unity Greater after using the original Precise created user account. I did notice a warning about something related to /TMP being 'missing' or 'not found' or something during the initial UBUNTU boot-up. I thought it was part of that typical 'checking disk status' routing we see from time to time.It just went away by itself. Its strange that it would affect one user account and not the others. [Bug 974628] Re: Default wallpaper for previous releases is missing
A recent update to Quantal caused some really annoying behaviors. The problem was that the wallpaper I previously was using (default in Quantal Alpha3) was removed from the collection of possible wallpapers. Because the desired wallpaper could not be found - the following issues were observed. 1) The screen resolution appeared to display 800x600 even though 1280x768 was selected. 2) The area where the wallpaper should have been displayed was black and the unity menu backround was blue. 3) There were horrible artefacts and/or visible noise that degraded the quality feel of the desktop itself. Possible work around: Changing screen resolution ?? I first encountered the problem when I was in the process of installing a big pile of updates using aptitude... (see Bug #1040774) Then the UI began behaving all wacky. Everything started flashing black every time I moved the mouse. Menus were positioned in the wrong places, Could not reposition windows on the UI. It was very difficult to see the windows inside the GU layers. This made Quantal practically unusable because because it would only correctly respond to about 1% of the mouse clicks. It turns out that during the upgrade my screen resolution was changed to 3840x1920 ( the first one in the pick list). I run Quantal on VMware® Workstation 8.0.4 build-744019. In the Systems-Settings = Displays I now see 'Laptop' where I used to see 'Unknown'. Perhaps this is the new default. Anyway after editing the xorg.conf file with nano and setting the display resolution back to 1920 x 1200 - everything seems fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927168 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in memmove() from drisw_update_tex_buffer() from dri_set_tex_buffer2() from drisw_bind_tex_image() from __glXBindTexImageEXT() from TfpTexture::enable() from enableFragmentOperationsAndDrawGeometry() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/927168/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1003042] Re: Quantal Package List Contains Sources That Cannot Be Downloaded
I was told shortly after I first opened this bug that this was because the state of Quantal development is so new that the build process hasn't yet reached the point that there are contents populated in those directories. Once development has progressed a little bit more completely this situation will resolve itself of its own accord. That''s how I understand it anyway. [Bug 969359] Re: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu
This may have been happening as early as Maverick (Bug #658342). At that time it was marked as a duplicate Multiple Keyboard Layouts unusable: continuously changes layout + 100% CPU usage (Bug #625793). I have head keyboard layouts mentioned here ~ so maybe. As far as I know I am not using multiple layouts. One thing I do observe ( probably totally irrelevant). I often hear my CPU fan pitch change when I leave my Ubuntu Desktop running long enough for the screen to go dark (especially I am running a Flash video in Youtube or something). I only mention this because I know that the idle-activation-enabled setting is related to the gnome-settings-daemon (at least to gsettings / dconf-editor) (http://askubuntu.com/questions/67355/how-do-i-completely-turn-off-screensaver-and-power-management). I cant find what's causing it because as so as I restore the screen to normal - CPU utilization goes back to normal. So if I wanted to do an experiment to see if it was gnome-settings- daemon was going berzerk while I was away I would need a console based way to capture CPU utilization for just that particular PID. I was thinking : top -b -p PID but that is a mess. Does anybody have a better idea. [Bug 969359] Re: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu
That whole bit about the CPU fan might be totally irrelevant after all. As it turns out - that is a different bug: [fglrx] compiz uses 100% CPU when screen turns off (spinning in glXWaitVideoSyncSGI or glXSwapBuffers) Bug #969860 that the team is familiar with. That bug has to do with compiz and this is settings daemon - however they may be the same if cmpiz uses settings daemon under the covers. The solve for that bug (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11936668) is related to the AMD Catalyst Control Center - in my case I'm using the ATI Radeon5700 graphics driver. See --help for more information Here's the problem: 1) ubuntubug -- help doesn't explain how to get the process ID (PID) 2) It makes you think there should be a 'Help' button on the 'No Package Selected' dialog 3) Some solutions: 1) The main Apport window should implement the --WIndow option which would allow the user to click on click on any open window to report a bug on that application 2) The main Apport window could display the same list of Processes and IDs that the System Monitor window displays - thereby allowing the user to select the appropriate process from the simply by clicking on the Process Name in the window. [Bug 778757] Re: ubuntuone-syncdaemon gobbles memory and hangs
This was my posting for bug # 879 696 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client/+bug/879696) - Which I classified as a duplicate of this... UbuntuOne Sync Daemon consumed 100% of available RAM (6.9 GB of 8.0 GB) As a result the machine went into SWAPPING thrash. Clicking 'Restart' in the UbuntuOneControlPanel had no effect. Unfortunately, the Swap memory went up to 45% before I was able to open LaunchPad, so the attached information reflects the state of the machine after system reboot ~ rather than at the time of the incident. However, I have attached some screen-shots I WAS able to capture before the machine tanked. Because the Ubuntu One process runs as a background daemon and cannot be ended without killing the process it seems like it should be immediately classified as Critical/Urgent/Total Platform Killer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778757 Title: ubuntuone-syncdaemon gobbles memory and hangs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+bug/778757/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 878568] Re: Ubiquity's Installation Type Window Totally Unresponsive
The issue is related to the fact that the drive is descried as Raid Component in the Disk Utility Image (see comment #2). I was able to use disk utility to remove this by formatting the drive as empty ~ and was able to continue on with the installation. So I am now happy. However I am very displeased with the installation process. I believe that this drive being flagged as Raid Component is what caused the original 11.04 to 11.10 system upgrade to fail; and is also responsible for the USB/DVD installation process to break. All of the documentation I found on-line says that I should have first seen a Ubiquity screen that displays some nice graphics offering the Install Alongside / Erase Disk / Something Else options. But this never happed. Instead Ubiquity went straight to the partition editor screen ~ but that screen was missing the nicely colored partition representation at the top of the screen. Also, none of the buttons worked ~ and the only option was to abandon the installation using quit. The cause of the problem dates back to my initial installation of Jaunty/Karmic on this machine. At that time the default Windows installation was ditched, and Ubuntu was successfully installed using the pre-Ubiquity installer/partitioner. However, during all the subsequent Karmic - Lucid - Natty conversions the problem never surfaced. Ubiquity should provide a more more elegant for detecting that the partitioner cannot proceed and should give a more useful approach to continuing the installation instead of just forcing the Quit. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/878568 Title: Ubiquity's Installation Type Window Totally Unresponsive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/878568/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 878568] [NEW] Ubiquity's Installation Type Window Totally Unresponsive

However, at that point, none of the buttons are responsive; and 'Install Now' reports 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu'.
