packages in a special PPA that enable both slight hinting, which really
improves vertical text contrast, and the default LCD filter, which

I think it is caused by Consolas having certain letters slightly wider or close
to the horizontal advance space . If you look at the artifatcs, they seem to

Right. It's an effect of the slightly altered shape of the fi ligature
vs. fi separately in the low-res pixel grid . The hood of the f will get
slightly lower to extend towards the dot of the the i. Then hinting
kicks in, and it will shorten the f by one pixel since the top of the
outline now
This is a bug. With Fontconfig likely. FreeType is not good at
authinting CJK text. This is why it forces embedded hints normally. This
doesn't happen with subpixel, but it should.

has nothing to do with hinting. Sure they both interact to form the final glyph
images but they are different ways to change the appearance of fonts.

It’s not the ordering. It’s the config in 53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf
The reason this file is there is that when lcddefault was introduced
some of the developers weren’t happy with the look of monospace fonts in
their terminal at low point sizes. So a compromise was made to move to

I just found out that when I add this to my
I run 2.6.27-2-generic now and the screen still does not recover after resume.
When I resume, the screen in initially black, but backlit. Then gradually
colored corruptions appear until the screen is full of eerie looking
corruptions. The desktop is fine, because I can blindly type, etc.

This is Trackstick Emulation mode, and it’s super-annoying. I’ve read
«man synaptics» up-and-down and there is no clear way to disable this.
Is it FingerPress? To what level do I have to set it to disable? 256?

The Ubuntu fix was a gsettings override, but upstream made a code
change.
