I'm sending this comment, while 6.06 release is installing in the
backgroung, my setup was the same as previously stated, but this time
the partitionner seems to have correctly mke2fs'ed the partition. There
was a warning about the partition table, that I quickly ignored...

I have changed the title of the bug to the exact error message that is
shown.
Steps to reproduce
not always reproducible, but frequent enough to be annoying
about once a day
~1/3 of refreshes...
- launch synaptic
- click the refresh button
- files are downloaded
- then a popup window appears:
Forgot to tell that a subsequent launch of synaptic with a new refresh
works OK.
Maybe this should be a little bit more than of low importance...

I have a very similar problem.
I was running karmic on 2.6.31 almost fine (evdev was as usual completely not
working so I used kbd)
yesterday it was working and now the xserver doesn't start with:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (8)
it's xorg-server 2:1.6.4-2ubuntu4
I tried
I just committed the upstream fix in meld git HEAD.
But I cannot update this bug's status, so I'll let someone who can
handle it.

I think I may have found the culrpit, the bug is reproductible with :

which is used by meld internally...

I'd suspect the intel driver or the COMPOSITE extension of xorg.
But I'll try with another monitor, but that will also be with VGA

could you try something to help pinpoint the bug ?
edit /usr/bin/meld, at line 32, you should see something like:
sys.path += [ /usr/lib/meld ]
try to replace the line with:
sys.path[0:0] = [ /usr/lib/meld ]
just replace += with [0:0] =
and launch meld again, the same way as when it was
What is missing from:
- menu edit
- preferences entry
- file filters tab
- version control entry

I was trying to reproduce this bug to confirm it since I get the same
error with other packages (not with python-visual) but can't get python
