[Bug 746892] Re: Keyboard randomly stops working, but autorepeat and mouse work

2013-01-14 Thread sanktnelson
seriously people?
There's an accessibility feature which makes it _impossible_ to access your
desktop, even for advanced users , whithout any notification whatsoever that
you turned it on?

I think I'll go install windows 8 now, it can't possibly be worse.

btw. I'm affected by this bug... used to be on ubuntu 12.10, now on
debian testing. same crap. cheers.

Same problem here on 12.04.01.
This is a regression, it used to work perfectly at some point.
happens with built-in mplayer as well as with mplayer and mplayer2 from
motumedia, so I blame compiz (and that had more regressions than I can count).

[Bug 948944] [NEW] after upgrade from oneiric python applications may use the wrong version of wxpython and fail as a result

2012-03-07 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

I am using the printrun utilities from ppa:richi-paraeasy/ppa. Upon
upgrade from oneiric pronterface, which uses and depends on wxpython
2.8, fails to run due to missing attributes even though both wxpython
2.6 and 2.8 are both installed. It turns out that it is actually using
2.6, since removing 2.6 results in the error changing to import wx: no
such module. This seems related to python-wxversion since removing and
reinstalling python-wxgtk2.6 and 2.8 did not help. What helped was
removing both as well as python-wxversion, and then reinstalling only
2.8 and wxversion. Presumably other packages and third party
applications using wxpython will run into similar problems.

2012-01-08 Thread sanktnelson
rant
How can a bug that was reported almost 3 years ago and affects many people
reproducably still exist? Then again, GNOME developers probably consider it a
feature.
Yet another case of GNOME (and Ubuntu) breaking stuff that worked fine for a
decade, and then making a point of not listening to the users who complain. I
have so many examples of this by now, I stopped counting. byebye GNOME, byebye
UBUNTU, it was nice while it lasted (the first few years anyway, lately it just
sucks).

[Bug 471129] Re: x61 tablet acpi event ibm hotkey HKEY 00000080 00005009 not mapped to keypress

2010-10-15 Thread sanktnelson
Hi Berrnhard,

I use this for my rotation-needs now:
http://www.krizka.net/projects/autorotate/

It's a python script which polls
/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_tablet_mode

It's not as elegant as an ACPI event, since it requires polling, but it
also rotates the screen according to the accelerometer, which is quite
cool. Since that already requires polling, the missing ACPI event really
doesn't hurt much.

[Bug 591187] [NEW] wacom tablet touch function rotation only rotates press event, release is unchanged

2010-06-08 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-wacom

I own a lenovo x61T tablet PC. It is convenient to be able to rotate the screen
and wacom input, which I do with the popular auto-rotate.py script. This uses
xsetwacom to set the stylus, eraser, and touch input orientations. Eraser and
stylus input are rotated correctly, but touch behaves strangely. It only seems
to rotate the mouse button pressed event, while the mouse release event
stays unrotated. The symptom of this is that when I try to click somewhere on
the screen, the cursor is underneath my finger while I am touching the screen
but jumps back to the unrotated position when I release my finger.
This happens both when using the autorotate script and when calling xsetwacom
by hand.
This makes usage of the touch function in any rotation other than normal
completely impossible and therefore removes a very nice piece of functionality
from this hardware.

This is a regression, since it worked fine in Karmic.

To get my tablet working properly in other respects (stylus buttons,
touch calibration, auto rotation) I've had to remove
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-wacom.conf and use a custom xorg.conf which
I have attached.

[Bug 591191] [NEW] right click and eraser tip do not work correctly on serial wacom tablet in lenovo x61t

2010-06-08 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

I am reporting this as a new bug in Lucid even though there is a similar
problem in Karmic, because the workaround posted there did not work for me.
I have a lenovo x61T tablet PC and the stylus button seems to be recognized as
left or middle mouse button, instead of the much more useful right mouse button.

My workaround for this and a few other problems was to remove

[Bug 573883] Re: evolution does not display google calendar and hangs when deleting the calendar

I have now given up on using evolutions native caldev and google

[Bug 573883] Re: evolution does not display google calendar and hangs when deleting the calendar

2010-05-03 Thread sanktnelson
Update: It works _only_ with the primary calendar, and _only_ if I give
the calendar in evolution the same name as my google login (and primary
calendar name). I'm guessing somewhere the code uses $Calendarname and
it is actually using the evolution name where it should be the evolution
one.

On amuch more annoying note: The plugin does not actually sync anything
locally! Even when I check make available for offline use the calendar
is not shown when I am offline. So essentially the whole thing just lets
me edit the google calendar in a separate application, when using the
browser would be easier and faster. WTF? What's the point then?

even more updates: managed to get caldev to work for the primary
calendar after replacing @ with %40. Didn't try with other calendars
than primary, because in addition to refusing to sync for offline use,
with caldev I can't even write to the calendar, every attempt at
modification results in a authorization failed popup (actually it's
Legitimation fehlgeschlagen since I use the German version.)

Is there _any_ application in Linux that actually syncs with a google
calendar for offline use? No Thunderbird doesn't, it also only works
online.

[Bug 573883] [NEW] evolution does not display google calendar and hangs when deleting the calendar

When I try to connect evolution to my google calendar, I can create the
calendar, including picking the one I want to display from the drop-down

After the calendar is created, evolution says that it is connecting in

trying to delete that calendar reliably hangs evolution. Only if I
change its username to something nonsensical I can delete the calendar

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-23 Thread sanktnelson
As stated above, I don't have the time to break my system with a
complete upgrade right now, much less to a beta. And I've learned the
hard way over the last few cycles that every upgrade breaks lots of
stuff which I rely on daily. Not the least of which is actually this
bug. If you would just compile your lucid packages against the karmic
libs and put them in the ppa so I don't have to do a full dist-upgrade,
I'll be more than happy to test.

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-23 Thread sanktnelson
hmm, how exactly does this give you more information than running the
live-cd on any other machine with 1024x768 screen resolution? I thought
the point was to see if it worked with all the random installed
programmes and custom settings that one finds in the real world. Just
booting the live-cd tells you nothing at all about that. Or are you
telling me that this bug also manifests on the jaunty live-cd? In that
case I'm not just disappointed but outright shocked.

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-23 Thread sanktnelson
@Didier: constructive is precisely what I was trying to be.

in that spirit: I just gave the lucid live iso a try, and the problem in
this bug didn't manifest itself. I did not try to install any extra
apps, but there is a fair amount of icons in the system-settings, and it
doesn't exhibit this problem. There were however two other problems:

- at first netbook-launcher started hung, i.e. it wouldn't react to input or
redraw its window after it gets damaged by others. after killing
netbook-launcher it gets restarted (by gnome-session presumably) and then
mainly works.
- except that sometimes the whole launcher gets shifted to the left by about
1/3rd of a screen, with the cut-off part getting wrapped around. Mouse input in
this case is still taken from the original location, i.e. to activate a certain
icon, I have to click about 1/3rd of a screen to the right of it.

Should I open new bug reports?

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-15 Thread sanktnelson
hi Roeland,

There is apparently no straightforward workaround in the current release
(karmic). Supposedly the bug is fixed in the next release (lucid) and
you could just upgrade to that, but it's still in development. I ended
up dowgrading just the netbook-launcher and libnetbooklauncher packages
to the versions from the previous release (jaunty, not hardy as I wrote
above). You get the slightly older interface, but it works just fine. To
do that, uninstall the current versions of those packages, then go to
packages.ubuntu.com and search for their equivalents from jaunty and
download and install them.

2010-03-14 Thread sanktnelson
sorry for being late to the survey, I had hardy'sversion installed. I
have four columns and messup happens after three lines in the second
group.

Won't test the ppa version since it depends on lots of stuff in lucid
and I don't have time to break my system right now. If someone compiles
it against karmic, I'll gladly test it.

[Bug 507837] Re: Desktop Effects prevents any window from stretching across dual monitors

2010-03-12 Thread sanktnelson
I also have this problem. Apparently it's actually intended
functionality, but I just find it annoying and stupid. I mean it's
reasonable to only maximize to a single screen, but when resizing, it
just refuses to do something that I explicitly request. That's just
wrong. That being said, I would also like a maximize across all
screens button sometimes.

Is anybody at ubuntu looking at this, or do we have to complain to
compiz upstream?

To all subscribers with nvidia cards: Have you tried turning xinerama
hints off? I remember that used to be possible in the nvidia drivers in
the xorg.conf somehow. That way your window manager will not even know
that you're runnning two screens, it will just think you have one big
one with a weird geometry. That will of course break other things, but
would probably work around this issue if it's imoprtant to you. I can't
test it myself since I'm on ATI at the moment and don't know how to do
it there.

It isn't just a language issue, I'm having it on an English system.
Maybe it's an upgrade problem? out of curiosity, I'd like to do a little
survey: To all the subscribers, please report back if you see the
problem on a fresh install or on upgrade. If upgrade, then mention how
old the original install is.

I'll start:

upgrade, originally probably dapper or edgy

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-02-09 Thread sanktnelson
Didn't help for me either.

mini_rant It baffles me how such a vital piece of the UI can be broken
for effectively an entire release cycle. ubuntu release quality has
continously gotten worse for at least the last 2 years if you ask me.
There has not been a single release that updated flawlessly for me, and
each one of them had annoying regressions, some of which were never
fixed until the next release (and some even persisted for more than one
cycle)/mini_rant

Anyway: As a workaround I'm using the netbook-launcher from jaunty,
which works perfectly after also installing the right clutter libraries.
And in my opinion it also looks nicer. The only catch is that the go
home button doesn't work anymore, but adding a show desktop button to
your panel will accomplish the same.

2009-12-22 Thread sanktnelson
@David: Bios is the latest (beta) available for this board. previous
stable version had the same problem.

So which one would you like me to test? How do I compile a current alsa
snapshot? btw, I tried 10.0.21 from some ppa in the process of figuring
this out, and it didn't help.

@Daniel at the risk of stating the obvious: See above. setting a
different codec mask helped.

[Bug 498836] Re: ALSA hda_intel.c:1408: no codecs initialized

2009-12-20 Thread sanktnelson
see above:

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

there is no other card, so it can't be blocked by another process.

Be that as it may, after digging through kernel and ALSA documentation,
and playing with the module options for snd-hda-intel, I found a
solution:

$ modprobe snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x1FF model=6stack-digout

resulted in working sound and this output in dmesg:

3508.662199] HDA Intel :00:1b.0: PCI INT A - GSI 22 (level, low) - IRQ 22
[ 3508.662202] hda_intel: codec_mask forced to 0xff

[ 3513.844200] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as
/devices/pci:00/:00:1b.0/input/input7

unfortunately it does not state which codec number actually succeeds, so
I went just masked out the ones that it complained about and put:

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x1F4 model=6stack-digout

into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

which also works and results in this output:
HDA Intel :00:1b.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 3609.590163] HDA Intel :00:1b.0: PCI INT A - GSI 22 (level, low) - IRQ

[ 3609.660209] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as
/devices/pci:00/:00:1b.0/input/input8

Not sure if that makes this a software or a hardware bug, since I don't know
where the information on what to probe should be coming from, but I can imagine
that this would be a dealbraker for many newbies, and this is a fairly popular
board I believe. Anyhow, someone (upstream?) should probably do something about
this.

[Bug 471129] [NEW] x61 tablet acpi event ibm hotkey HKEY 00000080 00005009 not mapped to keypress

2009-11-02 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

As of ubuntu karmic all hotkey events
(even if they are acpi events) are supposed to be mapped to input events
by the kernel.

However
ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 5009
ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 500a

do not generate a keypress event. Which in a way may be sensible, since
they are not actually keys, they are actually the events for changing
the x61 tablet from laptop mode to tablet mode. However, current acpid
refuses to handle those events in the current version of ubuntu, since
the kernel should generate keyboard input events for this, but as stated
above, it doesn't.

Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this? As it stands I don't have
access to that event at all, since acpid doesn't handle it any more and
no other event is generated yet, so I can't assign it in my desktop
environment either.

running latest karmic as of 2009-11-2, in thinkpad x61 tablet.

[Bug 409750] [NEW] sagemath should depend on (or at least recommend) jsmath packages

sagemath doesn't display formulas properly and notebook evaluation fails with a

[Bug 204566] Re: Rhythmbox keeps trying to install codecs

2009-05-31 Thread sanktnelson
Here's a radical idea: since nobody seems to be doing anything about
this, and since I've never had a use for that codec installation thing
in _any_ program, I just got rid of it completely:

sudo rm /usr/bin/gstreamer-codec-install

There. Problem solved.

[Bug 204566] Re: Rhythmbox keeps trying to install codecs

2009-05-17 Thread sanktnelson
really annoying. I set rhythmbox to use my standard mp3 directory for
its database, since I don't want the files taking up space twice. It
asks me several times if it should download codecs while it scans the
directory for new files. I can't turn it off and I can't identify the
offending files, at least one of the two should be possible. until then:
rhythmbox - useless.

2009-05-07 Thread sanktnelson
HÃ¥kon, you're my savior. I would never have figured out that it depends
on the encryption being done beforehand _and_ the timing. I tried all
the commands by hand and it didn't work, due to the connection being
dropped too quickly, the small script works however.

Still a really annoying bug, and no resource about it to be found on the
web, except this bug report of course. bluez documentation sucks.

bit pitiful that this is still not fixed in jaunty RC1.

also: none of the provided scripts work for me. not sure if this is
related to the fact that the id stylus doesn't work in jaunty any more

[Bug 364587] [NEW] thinkfinger makes Xsession exit after suspend in jaunty RC1

2009-04-21 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

After updating to Jaunty, suspend was broken for me. On every resume, my
xsession would be gone and I would be back at the gdm prompt. The only
error I could find in xorg.0.log was the following:

(EE) Virtual ThinkFinger Keyboard: Read error: No such device
(II) config/hal: removing device Virtual ThinkFinger Keyboard
(II) Virtual ThinkFinger Keyboard: Close
(II) UnloadModule: evdev

So I tried removing all thinkfinger packages and resume now works. in
the process i also confirmed bug 355940, long pause before and after
prompt caused by thinkfinger.

[Bug 336012] [NEW] bluetooth network PAN fails to connect to mobile phone

2009-02-28 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

I tried connecting to my mobile phone (Sony Ericsson w910) via bluetooth
Network (PAN), and the phone reports that my computer is trying to use it as a
modem and asks for permission twice in a row. After I grant permission the
first time, pand says bnep0 connected, but dhclient fails to obtain an
address. After a few seconds the second request for permission on the mobile
phone screen times out and the interface ceases to exist (dhclient reports no
such device). If I grant the second request the device disappears immediately.
If I tell the phone to always allow connections without asking, pand reports
connection refused right away.
The same happens if I try to use the new (dbus only) way of creating a network
connection (I did so via some python script I found on the net).
This is really quite annoying, because it worked fine for quite a long time and
was a great way to get online without the dial-up emulation crap. I'm not sure
when it broke though, as I haven't needed it for about a year.
This is on up to date intrepid btw.

[Bug 301480] Re: can't connect to PAN NAP

2009-02-27 Thread sanktnelson
i have this problem too, and I also think it is a very severe
regression. It makes my machine useless for me during travel.

I have in principle found out how to create the connection without pand
(some python script from the web), but the behavior is the same as with
pand from the bluez-compat package: My phone asks me for authorization
twice, and after I allow the first one my laptop aborts the connection
with permission denied.

This is really sad: An essential functionality for mobile users that
has been working great for like the last three years is completely
broken in the newest release, and stays that way 4months after the
release is out!

I realize this is probably not a ubuntu problem but upstream, but
nevertheless...

[Bug 334541] [NEW] networking disabled after resume

2009-02-25 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

After resume from suspend to RAM, network-manager is often in the
Networking disabled state. This happens randomly maybe every 3rd time
or so. This disables both wired and wireless interfaces, independent of
which one was being used before the suspend. They are properly reenabled
by clicking on Enable networking in nm-applet, so it seems like this
is a different issue from e.g. Bug #279986, where people are unable to
reenable networking after suspend. I guess this also means that it's
probably not a kernel issue since the hardware behaves just fine after
the resume.

This is on a Thinkpad x61 Tablet with up-to-date 8.10.

network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.1

[Bug 334563] [NEW] it is not possible to suspend the display before locking the screen

2009-02-25 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

since all timeouts in power management can only be set to values larger
than the screen saver activation time, it is impossible to have the
screen blanked without locking it if one still wants to lock it during a
longer absence. It should be possible to set those times independently,
in fact I see no good reason for linking them the way they are. When my
laptop is on battery, I typically want the screen to switch off to
conserve battery, if I haven't pressed a button for two minutes or so
(about the time it takes to read what is displayed on the screen in
reasonable font size). But I don't want to have to type in a password
every time I look away for slightly longer than those two minutes.
However, I still want the screen locked if I'm actually away for some
time (say 5minutes or more).

[Bug 308470] [NEW] Tablet input is screwed up after rotation and subsequent suspend/hibernate on thinkpad x61

2008-12-15 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

After rotating both screen and tablet input and then resuming, the
stylus input is completely wrong. It still seems to have the right
orientation, but the pointer appears several centimeters away from where
the stylus touches the screen. The Touchscreen input still works as
expected. This does not happen if I never use the rotation feature. I
use the python script fom blog.aliencam.net to do the rotation. The
problem can be fixed by starting the calibration feature of the wacomcpl
utility. The procedure does not actually need to be successfully
executed, the stylus input is fine as soon as the calibration button
is being pressed.

2007-11-08 Thread sanktnelson
159889 which I originally reported seems to be a duplicate of this, two
independant reports qualify for the confirmed status, I guess.

** Changed in: wine (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

[Bug 159889] wine: Warcraft III can't connect to the network any more since update to Gutsy

2007-11-03 Thread sanktnelson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

Since the update to gutsy, my warcraft III running under wine is not
able to connect to the network any more. Unfortunately I have no other
windows program that uses networking (or any other windows program at
all), so I can't test if this issue is exclusive to WarIII

** Affects: wine (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 80893 ***

I marked this as duplicate as there is a working fix in the other bug,
although the scpi buttons are not mentioned there

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

that kernel also fixed the problem for me. I originally posted this as a
separate bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.20/+bug/109526 because all my special buttons stopped working
together with sound, but that kernel fixed both problems.
