[Bug 1940769] [NEW] zfs initramfs and encrypted volume compatibility

2021-08-22 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

I wanted to combine zfs encryption with dropbear and remote unlock.

1. I installed dropbear-initramfs and set that up. That works no problem.
2. I boot up the machine, connect via ssh no problem.
3. I am able to do zfs load-key rpool no problem.
4. Then... I need to kill the plymouth ask-for-password 3 times in a row so it
runs out of retries - and then it boots just fine.

I'm a little bit worried about the reliability of that last step. It
works, but I'm, abusing retries in a way I'm fairly sure they weren't
intended to be used..

I'd love a zfs-unlock script or something like that that combines the
zfs load-key with a signal to the decrypt_fs function that it can
unblock and keep going. But maybe at least in that function stick in
some logic for "if the pool has been decrypted in the background, stop
retrying"?

2021-03-04 Thread Anders Aagaard
Everything was working fine for me up until I created this bug.

I checked dpkg logs + my reboot times and it's when I booted from
5.4.0-65 to 5.4.0-66 that this broke. So this adds up nicely 

Based on the latest comment in
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1427 it looks like this
got reverted in 5.4.88, which is presumably why this works for me in
HWE?

Switching to linux-image-generic-hwe-20.04 seems to have solved the
problem - but I don't think it immediately showed up. Will report back
if I run into the issue again.

[Bug 1916950] [NEW] Screen fails to wake up after sleep

2021-02-25 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

It looks an awful lot like this issue :
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1427.

I'm hitting these:
[11596.268677] [drm:dce112_get_pix_clk_dividers [amdgpu]] *ERROR*
dce112_get_pix_clk_dividers: Invalid parameters!!
[11596.269781] [drm:dm_restore_drm_connector_state [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Restoring
old state failed with -22

Switching to tty2 wakes it up and allows me to switch back and recover
my xorg session.

Should this be filed against the kernel, xorg, or amd drivers? I'm not
sure..

[Bug 1913639] Re: linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

2021-02-22 Thread Anders Aagaard
Hi

Sorry about the lack of reply on this, I had some hardware issues with
this setup and I've been waiting for the time to have a proper go at
fixing it. Unfortunately I failed at that yesterday. This machine no
longer boots, so it's hard for me to get the output..

[Bug 1913639] Re: linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

2021-02-09 Thread Anders Aagaard
So I got the ps2 adapter and... it looks like this has nothing to do
with ZFS.

I have 4 SATA drives in this machine.
sda - ST2000DM001-1ER1 - zpool storage
sdb - ST2000DM008-2FR1 - zpool storage
sdc - Samsung SSD 860 - my main drive. zpool rpool and bpool.
sdd - Samsung SSD 850 - windows - used with vfio + qemu. (This is also where my
kernel commandline arguments are coming from, isolating one gpu and a usb
controller. The iommu groups are clean and only contains the gpu+usb
controller, nothing else).

When in the crashkernel, I can see:
sda and sdb. Which now translates into the Samsung ssd 850 and one of the
storage pool drives. So half of my storage pool and the windows drive. The 2
other sata drives are not there. And I see a lot of errors for ata5.00: failed
to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x100)

The motherboard is a MSI X99A SLI PLUS. I'm.. happy with closing this issue at
this point. If there's anything quick I can do to help debug this absolutely.
But I feel like this moved from a category of "zfs initrd script needs
patching" into "weird motherboard bug" - in a motherboard I'm planning to
replace anyway.

[Bug 1913639] Re: linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

2021-02-06 Thread Anders Aagaard
A : I can confirm that debug was there, and the output on the console is
different. However, plugging in the keyboard again didn't work,
regardless of usb port on the machine, and I can't get a response on ssh
either (or pinging the machine for that matter). Any ideas? I've
attached a photo of what happens... which is surprisingly different? No
errors, just dumps me on the initramfs prompt. Ref getting usb working
there is no output on the console whatsoever if I replug the keyboard.

B : I've attached these.

C : I realize I had from previous debugging already ran with
crashkernel=2096M-:2096M, so I don't think it's a memory issue?

I also just spend 5$ to order a usb to ps2 adapter, that should make it
a bit easier to figure out what's going on.

[Bug 1913639] Re: linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

2021-01-30 Thread Anders Aagaard
That made my kdump initrd grow from 46mb to 86mb. However, it still
fails.

An additional complication here is that kdump does something with my usb
keyboard so I can't actually write anything when I get to the initramfs
prompt... So it's a bit hard to debug what's going on.

my zpool/rpool setup looks like this:
```
  pool: bpool
 state: ONLINE
  scan: scrub repaired 0B in 0 days 00:00:04 with 0 errors on Sun Jan 10
00:24:05 2021
config:
NAMESTATE READ WRITE CKSUM
bpool   ONLINE   0 0 0
  sdc1  ONLINE   0 0 0
errors: No known data errors
  pool: rpool
 state: ONLINE
  scan: scrub repaired 0B in 0 days 00:18:34 with 0 errors on Sun Jan 10
00:42:35 2021
config:
NAMESTATE READ WRITE CKSUM
rpool   ONLINE   0 0 0
  sdc2  ONLINE   0 0 0
```

sdc is just a standard sata drive, so it should just work out of the box
with any fairly recent kernel, I haven't needed any non standard changes
for that drive in many many kernels.

Can I easily modify the initrd that's built into this initrd and add
some debug info to stdout somehow?

[Bug 1913639] [NEW] linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

I could not get any crash logs after using this package.

I tried using it and triggering a crash from a terminal. The alternate
kernel boots successfully, but the initrd for linux-crashdump is not
capable of loading my rpool.

Yes, it really has to be fixed.. by the people maintaining the third
party repository that has the actual bug in it. Ubuntu's core packages
can't put in workarounds for bugs in other repositories.

[Bug 1029289] Re: Need to authorize my google account each time I boot the computer

2013-01-09 Thread Anders Aagaard
I suspect this is hardware related. My wifi will come online and be up
for a little bit before it's actually connected. In that period ping
returns nothing, then after a little bit of being up it wakes up and
starts working. So basically I have packetloss for a few seconds on a
new wifi connection, even though it's saying it's connected.

[Bug 381059] Re: use zram-config by default

2012-12-09 Thread Anders Aagaard
I've got a system with 16gb ram, I still use zram. In the situations I
do run low on memory (which happens, I do machine learning) zram will
improve performance massivly. And I have yet to see a single benchmark
where zram decreases system performance at all. In fact it'd be
interesting to see numbers of a performance test using say 95% of the
available memory with and without zram. Although I recon that would be a
scenario that would be fairly rare.

[Bug 769145] Re: In the workspace switcher the application fall under the workspace

2012-12-05 Thread Anders Aagaard
Any reason this is marked as low priority? I'd argue that any bug that
is easily reproducable on a stock setup which can cause windows to
disapear without being accessable is a rather big deal. Especially since
for a rookie user you'd click on the application icon and the window
would not reapear, and the application would not relaunch.

My computer froze, or atleast I thought it did. It was during a close
dialog effect, so while it was fading a window out. I changed to another

contained:

I dont use the software center at all, but I do use the update manager.

Come to think of it I had a package stuck on updating too (third party

installed/updated?

I haven't been able to reproduce this with the new fglrx versions.
Either on natty or maverick (by manually downloading latest fglrx).

[Bug 682413] [NEW] Xorg freeze wine+3d with fglrx

2010-11-28 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This happens when playing world of warcraft in wine. It triggers either
when switching between zones, or on first start. If it hangs on first
start it'll have the changed mouse pointer, but a black box in the
middle. The entire screen freezes at that point.

[Bug 678063] [NEW] suspend crashes on 2.6.35+ but not 2.6.32

2010-11-21 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

Trying to debug this problem I changed to the latest stable fglrx
(10.11). I've tried the stable kernel + 2.6.37-rc1 (rc2 wouldn't boot
X). A pm-trace illustrates where the problem is. I can't seem to
reproduce this at all on my lucid setup, using fglrx 10.11 and 2.6.32.

pm-trace files:
dmesg2.txt = after one successfull suspend with external monitor unplugged.
This second one is with external monitor plugged in.
dmesg3.txt = suspend with 2.6.37-rc1

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2010-09-28 Thread Anders Aagaard
Sending a NOOP on the connection is such a small fix that this could
almost be considered a breadcrumb.

And I've also seen the 0byte file problem. It does not happen using
gedit (using gvfs), but it does happen using geany (using plain fuse). I
suspect gedit reconnects and saves properly.

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off

2010-07-28 Thread Anders Aagaard
Yes, it's installed when you install samba, I should have specified I
meant by default when installing samba, sorry about that.

I've looked around for a good while now trying to find out what hashes and
encryption samba uses on it's files. I assumed it would have to use whatever
hash the protocol uses, and it looks like I guessed right. Looking around for
specifications on whats stored in the password database I find this in samba's
documentation:
user account information such as username, LM/NT password hashes, password
change times, and account flags

So that's LanMan and MD4 hash'es. LanMan is known for being easy to
crack (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM_hash ).

My /etc/secrets are hashed to sha512 because it's too easy to break md5.
I REALLY don't want my password automatically put in more databases by
default in any package.

Looking into this more, without client lanman auth = yes samba will

[Bug 609092] [NEW] libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off

2010-07-23 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Samba defaults to unix password sync off, but this package is
installed by default, and ignores that setting and sync's on it's own
initiative. I see NO reason why this should be installed by default.
Instead there could be a comment in the default smb.conf shipped, that
says instead of using unix password sync consider package X.

I strongly suspect there's a security consern aswell here, I REALLY
don't want my password auto sync'ed to multiple places by default. I
have sha512 encryption on /etc/shadow for a reason.

I haven't had a user enabled in samba for ages, because it kept resetting the
password. To find the solution I looked in samba logs, and samba configuration
files, and found nothing to explain this behavior. Then I stumbled over this
thread to find the solution to what was going on:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=827088

[Bug 507233] Re: NVIDIA - Xorg crashes (empty backtrace) with segfault OR general protection in ld-2.10.1.so

2010-06-19 Thread Anders Aagaard
It's not a hardware issue, using 256.29 I don't get the issue at all
with the power cable in. Of course when you pull it out you end up on
battery saving speeds, and then I run into issues.

If it was a hardware issue related to cooling, running with power at max
speed would show the issue, and it doesn't.

[Bug 429036] Re: core i7 i5 (Lynnfield) turbo boost not working

2010-06-03 Thread Anders Aagaard
@Dan Weber
This bug was solved with a patch that fixed a broken acpi implementation in the
kernel. There can be many reasons why it might not work on your specific
hardware, but the original title of this bug report is far too broad.

Also please make sure your checking the right way, this will not show up
correctly in a lot of graphical tools. Attaching turbostat (should be in
the newest sysutils if I remember correctly), you can use that to check.

[Bug 507233] Re: NVIDIA - Xorg crashes (empty backtrace) with segfault OR general protection in ld-2.10.1.so

2010-04-25 Thread Anders Aagaard
It's the powermeter. It doesn't seem to do anything, but it does!

Turn it on (it'll turn a TINY bit brighter) and off again (or you'll
defenatly be unstable) and for me it's WAY better than it was atleast.

I've had some crashes, but only with the power cord out (which also adds
to instability :/ )

2010-04-03 Thread Anders Aagaard
Vadim note that the workaround in post #58
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=142946 (and comment
#20) do work. A little annoying but it's stable for me.

Also bumping http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=142946
might at some point get nvidia to look at the issue.

[Bug 507233] Re: NVIDIA - Xorg crashes (empty backtrace) with segfault OR general protection in ld-2.10.1.so

2010-03-29 Thread Anders Aagaard
See http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=142946

My workaround on alienware m15x with gtx 260m is every startup/every
suspend2ram cycle switch to vt1 back to active vt and click the stealth
mode button on my alienware on and off. I'm guessing this is enough to
reset settings.

On a side note I've lost all respect for nvidia, this made my computer
useless for months and I've had no reply from nvidia. While threads with
multi gpu/multi head issues gets replies within a days.

[Bug 521346] [NEW] broken acpi implementation in 2.6.32 resulting in poor i5 i7 performance

2010-02-13 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

A very simple bug in the acpi implementation in 2.6.32 results in a lot
of i5/i7 cpu's not scaling to full speed.

This was fixed and accepted for 2.6.32-rc5, but since that kernel won't
be in karmic or lucid I'd request this patch be applied to both karmic
and lucid's stable kernels. It's a very small and straightforward patch.

2010-01-12 Thread Anders Aagaard
http://code.google.com/p/i7z/issues/detail?id=1

Some discussion there trying to figure out, seems I dont enter C6 at
all.

I've also seen this mentioned a lot of places:
Turbo is enabled if cpufreq selects the (max+1) Mhz frequency

Checking scaling_available_frequencies I see this:
1597000 1596000 1463000 133 1197000 1064000 931000

Checking scaling_cur_freq under load I see:
1597000

But running a task * 4 is exactly as fast as running it * 1, which leads
me to believe turbo boost is not working properly.

[Bug 482129] Re: Empathy cant send ÅÄÖ and åäö, Error sending message 'test mä åäö': unknown

2010-01-12 Thread Anders Aagaard
Steps to reproduce : Send a swedish/norwegian character (I imagine a lot of
others are also affected, but to be safe use one of those)
What I think should be happening : The message sent rather than an error.

And this isn't a crash so you dont get a backtrace.

This bug was easy enough to understand from the apport, and very easy to
understand after post #3.

[Bug 381059] Re: use compcache by default

2009-07-15 Thread Anders Aagaard
It should atleast be considerably easier to add, maybe as an option in
the install menu or something, that's enabled on systems with 1gb memory
or less. Even on a system with 4gb memory compcache helps performance
considerably (allowing io cache to function optimally without swapping
all my programs).

Instead of modifying initramfs it might be an idea to add a meta package
to automatically do that as well.

Delayed allocation is to skip the allocating step when writing a file,

[Bug 294600] [NEW] aa-genprof produces empty profiles

2008-11-06 Thread Anders Aagaard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Trying to use genprof to produce an apparmor profile I get empty
profiles, not containing enough to run the application.

Example:
# genprof ping

Then running ping www.google.no on another console successfully resolves
the ip and pings it.

I select S for scan and then F for finish in genprof, which produces this
output:
Profiling: /bin/ping

[(S)can system log for SubDomain events] / (F)inish
Reading log entries from /var/log/messages.
Updating AppArmor profiles in /etc/apparmor.d.

Profiling: /bin/ping

[(S)can system log for SubDomain events] / (F)inish
Setting /bin/ping to enforce mode.
Reloaded SubDomain profiles in enforce mode.
Finished generating profile for /bin/ping.

Regardless of which application I run, I then get a profile looking like this:
#include tunables/global

/bin/ping {
  #include abstractions/base
}

Which isn't enough for a profile, isn't as restrictive as I'd like it, and
results in:
ping www.google.no
ping: unknown host www.google.no
