[Bug 1695607] Re: Killed Wine application still shown in Gnome launcher
This was still the case in Ubuntu 17.10 (I'll be able to retest and submit new logs soon). - The zombie Wine icons clutter the Gnome Shell launcher and app switcher until there is no space - Moreover Wine leaves the window manager in a really messy state so that Alt-Tab does not trigger app switching in Gnome Shell (and in Unity, windows were placed on top of the shell/launcher/dash) Work-around: - close/loose all applications and restart the session (Wayland) - restart window manager with Alt+F2 and type "r[enter]" (under Xorg) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1695607 Title: Killed Wine application still shown in Gnome launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1695607/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1731757] [NEW] When unlocking keyrings, seahorse should remember choice for "Automatically unlock this keyring"
Public bug reported: As a user, I want to keep some specific secrets under special protection, i.e. only manually unlocked on demand and not at login. Everytime that I manually unlock a keyring, the password dialog contains a preselected checkbox "Automatically unlock this keyring whenever I'm logged in". To preserve the status quo (keyring not automatically unlocked) there is always user interaction required to uncheck the checkbox. In other words, seahorse defaults to reduce the level of security. Expected behavior: - The checkbox should not be preselected. Rationale: 1. While there might exist cases where a user later wants configure a keyring to unlock automatically, this is rather a rare case. It causes much less effort to check the checkbox when you really want to instead of unchecking it every time. 2. This is very very prone to user error. Here, user error affects security. 3. Once the checkbox is checked, this cannot easily be reverted because the password dialog won't appear anymore. - (Maybe) The checkbox should be completely removed. See justification in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=576676 (planned to be included 8 years ago) I just found this bug has been reported and discussed upstream 3.5 years ago with a patch submitted that has neither been released nor even reviewed. Now in the 4th subsequent Ubuntu release users can still not benefit from it. Apart from the bug itself, the kind of upstream bug-handling is very disappointing for an app that is at the core of the OS security. [Bug 1708828] Re: Trackpad tap does not work in GDM
A point to consider is that not all touchpads look the same and behave the same. Hardware manufacturers do use their freedom of physical design decisions to drive the user into a natural interaction that fits their vision. By not having visible buttons and requiring significant force for physical clicking, touch tends to feel more natural (as in the name). While not a "significant restriction", the software view is often much simpler than the variety of real hardware outside. This poses rather an inconsistency, and the system does not notify the user about the change of interaction paradigm. This also appears new and inconsistent in comparison to other widespread desktops (Unity) where such enforcements are not active. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1708828 Title: Trackpad tap does not work in GDM To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1708828/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1708828] [NEW] Trackpad tap does not work in GDM
Public bug reported: When Gnome Shell crashes or after boot, GDM is shown and asks the user to select an account and type the password. However selecting the account by tapping on it with the trackpad does not work. One has to press hard on the trackpad until it makes a cracking noise. This is probably because the defaults in the input manager for GDM and new user accounts are set to disable "tap to click". 1. The default is inconsistent for users who have this enabled within their account, but unexpectedly encounter the default before logging in. 2. The default (for session login etc.) should be all-encompassing rather than specialized/restrictive. A user being used to click is not hindered by tapping being enabled. A user being used to tap is however hindered by tapping being disabled. [Bug 1642272] Re: Incorrect UI scale on high-resolution desktop (everything is gigantic)
I discovered: Initially, I had set environment variables in .bashrc for manually triggering the UI scaling of Qt5, Java, etc. During debugging of this issue (as instructed above) I **commented them out** and after loout/login, the incorrect UI scale persisted. Now I noticed that QT_DEVICE_PIXEL_RATIO=2 and QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=2 were still set automatically during the boot/login process. Instead of commenting them out, I then set them to 1 in ~/.bashrc but they still were overriden. How can a non-working feature from upstream be merged into a stable Ubuntu release without review/trying out? [Bug 1665382] [NEW] File operation progress does not complete properly
Public bug reported: When copying files, a progress indicator button appears in the toolbar (round "cake" diagram). It also opens a popover that lists all file operations with a progress bar each. Unfortunately the popover 1) covers a huge part of the window, 2) it is opened on all nautilus windows on all workspaces, 3) the progress popover does not close on its own when the operations are completed (circle diagram shows full, but does not disappear) and 4) the unity launcher icon and alt-tab switcher continue displaying the full progress bar. Furthermore, the unconscious need to remove what covers your sight seduces the user to click the nearest "X" to close the popover. However, the "X" aborts file operations leading to corrupted, incompletely copied files. The correct way is to toggle the progress button. However, the toggle-off action is unintuitive because the user did not manually toggle it on. Expected behavior: Popover window opens when the user clicks the progress indicator button, and it only opens on the current workspace. After file operations complete, it closes on its own and the progress bar on the launcher icon disappears. Actual behavior: Popover window opens on all nautilus windows. After file operations complete, they do not close. [Bug 1662864] [NEW] exiv2 fails to read xml metadata when duplicates present
Public bug reported: When reading XMP metadata from image files, exiv2 (and gexiv2) give sometimes no output, although metadata are present. This is the case when duplicate tags are present. While dulicate tags are incorrect and inconsistent, we can not blame some software that did not properly write XMP data, because in real- world scenarios, users DO have image files with duplicate tags, and these files DO contain metadata. Observation: $ exiv2 -px example_duplicate_tags.jpg Error: XMP Toolkit error 203: Duplicate property or field node Warning: Failed to decode XMP metadata. example_duplicate_tags.jpg: (No XMP data found in the file) By contrast, `exiftool example_duplicate_tags.jpg` prints all metadata and ignores duplicates. Expectation: exiv2 should give access to all readable tags. If some XMP tags are inconsistent, it should only be indicated by a warning but not a denial of operation. In case of duplicates the question is open whether to return the last occuring value or the first. [Bug 1642357] [NEW] Oversized icon causes toolbar to jump when changing tabs
Public bug reported: For some reason, the "(i) comparison" icon is displayed too big. This icon affects the toolbar height, and when switching between tabs, the toolbar height changes depending on the visibility of that icon. As a consequence, mouse clicks on a tab can trigger toolbar buttons and lead to unintended operation. The icon issue happens in some other GTK apps as well. Possibly the "(i)" icon is only available in a different resolution or file format than the others. In any case it should display in a uniform size. Either this is a bug in GTK or the icon is incorrectly setup by the application. This happens on a high-dpi display (aka system settings UI scale slider at 2.0). [Bug 1642272] [NEW] incorrect UI scale on high-resolution desktop
Public bug reported: On a hidpi display, the unity8 desktop session in 16.10 has an oversized and inconsistent UI scale. The unity8 session is absolutely not usable for testing (because there is not even enough screen space to display the logout menu item). The shell+cursor is rendered with a UI scale of at least 2× the correct scale (e.g. 4× the scale of a low-dpi display). Due to this the indicator menus collapse immediately after clicking because they are larger than the screen height. The content of the scopes window is rendered with 4× the correct scale, giving space for only one icon. In unity 16.04, the correct scale could be achieved by setting "export GRID_UNIT_PX=16" in .bashrc, however this has no effect anymore when I remove or change it. The issue is also in the guest session. Ubuntu version: 16.10 (fresh install) unity8 version: 8.14+16.10.20160 amd64 physical resolution: 3200×1800 resolution used by unity8: 3200×1800 (at first sight I thought it selected a low resolution, but in fact fonts are very sharp). ** Affects: unity8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "photo showing the shell 2× too big and the scopes 4× too big" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1642272/+attachment/4778139/+files/IMG_20161116_141005.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1642272 Title: incorrect UI scale on high-resolution desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1642272/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1172789] Re: nm-applet leaks memory
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected xenial ** Description changed: When using the notebook for a long time, nm-applet leaks more and more memory. This happens especially when I'm connected to a weak wifi network (actually it is more likely that the wifi driver is weak) and the connection aborts frequently, ie. most of the time it is trying to connect. It is noticeable that the "searching wifi" animation in the Unity panel causes a significant CPU load (of the compiz process) and fan noise. When I kill nm-applet, the CPU load is gone (while it is still searching wifi). [Bug 1633890] [NEW] sudo password field allows other applications to steal focus
Public bug reported: When apport asks for the sudo passwords, other applications or dialogs can steal focus. This is inacceptable because it leads to leaked passwords. Moreover, it is inconvenient because the apport sudo dialog contains possibly a part of the password and the other application the other part, requiring to retype it. observed behavior: 1. apport asks for sudo rights. 2. I start typing the password. 3. network manager has disconnected from wifi and asks for wifi password, with the wifi password dialog getting focussed. 4. The remaining characters that I type go into the second application (network manager) with the enter key causing an unintended action. expected behavior: When typing a password, no other application can be focussed automatically (i.e. not by user action) until I have finished typing the password. This can be implemented as: - in all UI toolkits, if a password input field is focussed and the user is currently typing (timeout after last keys stroke), the application locks focus. - make sudo dialog system-modal, and the window manager does not allow anything else being focussed by non-user action. [Bug 1581377] [NEW] text-scaling-factor changes from 1.0
Public bug reported: After upgrading from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04, org.gnome.desktop.interface .text-scaling-factor is not anymore set to 1.0 (as before upgrade) and it does not want to be set to this value. When setting it via gnome-tweak-tool or dconf-editor, it grows again to 1.1875 which makes all fonts noticeably bigger than normal. [Bug 1570701] [NEW] suspend on critical battery state can be prevented by applications
Public bug reported: Some applications prevent the computer from going to suspend mode (applications that display video, eg. chromium, opera, openshot) because they assume it is in the user's interest to keep the screen on even when inactive. This is most times helpful and saves the user from having to move a finger. But on low battery power, the user's inactivity could also be due to absence or sleep, and keeping the computer on until the power is 0.000% causes more damage than it serves the user's interest: - battery drain over time - data loss We can not rely on that every application implements sophisticated power management in the user's interest and has no malicious intentions. It is crucial that the operating system still reserves to have the last word in resource and power management. Steps to reproduce: 1. Watch a video in Opera (36) in full screen 2. Fall asleep 3. After some hours, the computer is either still on (with battery <3%) or already off Expected behavior: When not connected to an external power source and battery has low power (<30%), the usual procedure for suspend is still applied: 1. Notification on inactivity 2. Suspend There may be a way to configure this manually, but I think due to the implications of hardware drain and data loss Ubuntu should come with a reasonable default that serves the interests of general, unconscious users. [Bug 1534645] [NEW] Cannot easily preserve a keyring to be only unlocked manually
Public bug reported: Assume you want to create a keyring for secrets that you only need rarely and thus want to access only on demand (not unlock on every login session). Whenever you access/unlock the keyring for the first, second, etc. time, the "Unlock keyring" dialog asks for the password and has a preselected checkbox "Automatically unlock this keyring whenever I'm logged in". This is however not the current setting for this keyring, so it constitutes a change of a setting, which counteracts the (likely) intention of the user. It is to easily to type the password and hit enter, thereby changing this keyring to an automatically unlocked one, and this risk happens repeatedly everytime you unlock it. In case you forgot to uncheck the checkbox, the only way to restore the original setting is hidden (not in keyring → properties, but only by setting a new password). A security-focused application should also not have defaults that tend to decrease security in favor of usability. Having the checkbox preselected gains less extra usability (for the case the user wants to change the keyring to be automatically unlocked: 1 click saved) than that it decreases usability (in case the user wants to keep the keyring manual: 1 click everytime to unselect it). A possible fix is to not preselect the checkbox. version 3.10.2 in Ubuntu 14.04 as well as in the version in Ubuntu 15.10 ** Affects: seahorse (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1534645 Title: Cannot easily preserve a keyring to be only unlocked manually To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1534645/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1476211] Re: kswapd takes 100% CPU although there is no swap
[[Ubuntu does not provide an update path for (these) Lenovo BIOS. Maybe it would be nice to have a solution for this as well, to avoid users being bound to buggy and outdated BIOS. To add, the given instructions to the wiki seem very abandonned and do not (not all) apply to nowadays ROMs of >10MB. Figuring that out cost me a day. ]] After installing the Win8/BIOS, the problem still occurs. sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 76CN43WW 03/30/2015 When I intentionally launch so many applications to trigger the freezes, I noticed that `top` displays actually different numbers: KiB Mem: 8085948 total, 8023384 used, 62564 free,3564 buffers KiB Swap: 0 total, 0 used, 0 free. 2976336 cached Mem The before mentioned numbers were from Gnome system monitor (oh!), which always displays only 5GB / 65% of RAM. This time had also top opened before the freeze. Do I interprete it right that under these conditions the memory is indeed full and that system monitor displays (used‒cached) ? The laptop was still frozen about 10min until the Kernel decided (or was able to) kill processes and became repsonsive again. On a second test, it didn't become responsive even after 20min. So concluding, • there could be a bug in system monitor to display (used ‒ cached) RAM • I still don't know what it is doing within these 10 – ∞ minutes. I still think the Kernel should be able to start killing processes (earlier), or there should be warnings that can take effect before the computer becomes unresponsive. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1476211 Title: kswapd takes 100% CPU although there is no swap To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1476211/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1476211] [NEW] kswapd takes 100% CPU although there is no swap
Public bug reported: On a notebook with neither swap partition nor swap file (because of SSD and surplus of RAM), kswapd0 suddenly runs amok and takes 100% of CPU activity. When this happens, usually at most 5.5 of 8 GB RAM were in use, so there is no reason to swap. This happens so suddenly, that no user input is possible anymore, eg. [Bug 1465293] [NEW] User interface hard to use on touchscreens
Public bug reported: The toolbar buttons in the gtk2 version of xournal are quite small, considering that the software is directed to touchscreen/tablet use. While you may need a stylo anyways for writing, it may happen from time to time you also try to use the finger for interacting with the document or for reaching a button. Hence a View option to change button size (and to customize to show only those buttons you use) would be good. Apart from that, modern devices often have higher-than-traditional resolutions (3200×1800 or bigger) which makes the UI even harder to use with a stylo. A port to resolution-independent gtk3 (or QML) with the benefit of touch interactions like swipe and pinch would really make the difference. [Bug 1461253] [NEW] dist-upgrade overwrites ppa comments
Public bug reported: Since PPAs often have cryptic urls (or the ppa/user name gives no obvious hint about the purpose), one can add a comment to each ppa via 'Applications & Updates → Other Software → Edit → Comment'. This comment or label is then usually highlighted in bold font in the list and makes it easier to grasp for what package the PPA was added. When upgrading the distribution, Ubuntu not only deactivates the active PPAs, but also replaces the entire comment by "disabled on upgrade to vivid". [Bug 1310186] Re: mediascanner prevents unmounting usb device
I wonder what is the benefit of scanning external drives that are mounted only temporarily, especially when connecting other people's USB sticks. Since mediascanner is a process that was not launched manually by the user, the confirmation on removal (device busy) is redundant, instead mediascanner could probably shutdown silently whenever unmounting of the device is requested (ie. unmounting should be done by no more than one click in nautilus sidebar etc.). The risk of bricking your own or even worse other people's USB stick by improper removal (if a process is unperceivedly still running on the drive) is too high so that it is questionable whether mediascanner should run at all on external drives. I think this is a very critical situation. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310186 Title: mediascanner prevents unmounting usb device To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mediascanner2/+bug/1310186/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1446639] [NEW] Ubuntu loads configuration incorrectly on high-dpi screen
Public bug reported: When booting, unity loads the desktop partially with double the correct size (default setting: scale factor 2, but it loads as if scale factor 4). The launcher, dash, application switcher appear too big while the panel and applications themselves have correct size. After some seconds the screen turns black, the wallpaper appears 4 times and then the wallpaper appears at correct size as well as launcher, dash, application switcher and panel. However, the desktop icons and the window content of gtk3 applications appears too small (as with scale factor 1). This is only true for gtk3 applications, not gtk2, Wine, XUL, Qt, VCL. Also, unity panel uses incorrect (strong) font hinting while font hinting is correct in the rest of the system. Unity dash uses partially a fallback sans serif font instead of Ubuntu font and incorrect character kerning. This is similar as bug #1398208. [Bug 1432428] [NEW] unity-panel-service crashes when clicking onboard indicator
Public bug reported: When clicking the onboard indicator for the first time (after starting onboard), it can cause a crash of unity-panel-service. I never got crashes of unity-panel-service in connection with other indicators or applications, so I suppose it is something specific to the way how onboard creates its indicator. Apport is regularly collecting the information for this crash, but then it quietly disappears, without telling me whether the crash was automatically reported and to where. Unfortunately I don't have any references / bug report numbers etc. but I have a file _usr_lib_unity_unity-panel-service.1000.crash (13MB) that apport apparently created (I don't which format it is). I was hoping there is a chance someone here could find out more than when I report it to unity, because it happens very specifically when using onboard. [Bug 1417648] [NEW] greeter: wifi prompt steals focus from user login password input
Public bug reported: In the unity greeter, a user selects an account and types a password and presses ">" or enter to login. While typing the password, sometimes a wifi prompt pops up and steals focus from the password prompt. * It is disruptive and leaves the typed login password incomplete/incorrect. * It is redundant, because when almost having completed the login it is faster to login and let Ubuntu connect to the wifi automatically. * The wifi prompt asks for a wifi password that it never remembers. [Bug 1416445] [NEW] fonts selector misses fonts
Public bug reported: The fonts section offers to choose fonts for "window titles", "user interface", "documents". Default window title font in Ubuntu is "Ubuntu bold". However the font selector misses "Ubuntu bold" although it is installed. As a consequence, it is not possible to restore that font via UI if a different font was temporarily chosen. As a workaround, one can use dconf-editor to set "org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.titlebar-font" (which somewhat defeats the purpose of having gnome-tweak-tools). [Bug 1416128] [NEW] Moving the microphone volume slider bounces back
Public bug reported: When moving the microphone slider in the Unity sound menu or in Ubuntu Contorl Center / Sound, it starts moving back to the left and decreases volume again to the original position. As a consequence, it is hard to due phone/skype/hangout calls because the counterpart doesn't understand the recorded sound. [Bug 1416084] [NEW] evince opens documents in tiny windows
Public bug reported: When opening a document in evince, it usually used to open in a reasonable window size (I don't know, maybe last used size). However many document now open in an evince window that is as small as possible (like 20px) and requires upscaling every time. Sometimes, the document window starts to reduce its size until it hits the minimum size limit. This could be related to using a high-dpi screen (=scaling-factor set to 2.0). It could be related to bug #1299054. [Bug 1355137] Re: gtk2 theme version improvements for high-dpi screens
Not being a developer I don't have enough knowledge to do a patch that can be integrated and packaged. These modified files reduce the problem significantly, but only: • for the Ambiance theme, if another theme is applied the benefits are lost • for a UI scaling factor of 2 There would be a switch needed which files to use depending on the integer value of the UI scaling factor. Ideally it would be patched in the software that reads these gtkrc files, and apply integer scaling to these dimensions (size, width, height, length). ** Attachment added: "patched files of the /usr/share/Ambiance/gtk2.0 folder" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-themes/+bug/1355137/+attachment/4300156/+files/Ambiance_gtk-2.0.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1355137 Title: gtk2 theme version improvements for high-dpi screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-themes/+bug/1355137/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1405926] [NEW] screen darkening does not work correctly on high-dpi screen
Public bug reported: When "Control Center → Brightness and Lock → Darken the screen to save energy" is set, the screen fades slowly into black after a certain time of inactivity. On a high-dpi screen, it fades only the upper left quarter of the screen and keeps the rest visible.
