[Bug 1813663] Re: External monitors does not work anymore 4.15.0-44

2019-01-30 Thread Brad Johnson
Seeing this with a Lenovo T480. Laptop display + USB-C dock with a
DisplayPort and HDMI out. No issues with the HDMI connection, but the
DisplayPort connection is where I was having issues. If the system
detected the Display Port monitor it came in as a disabled monitor. If
I enabled it, then all screens would go blank and I would have to force
the laptop off to recover. Currently booting back into 4.15.0-43
without issue.

[Bug 441800] [NEW] [Karmic Beta] Bluetooth is disabled. Turn on Bluetooth has no effect.

2009-10-03 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10
Note: Clean beta install, fully updated.

gnome-bluetooth:
  Installed: 2.28.0-0ubuntu2

The bluetooth preferences panel recognises when the bluetooth adapter is
turned on/off via Fn+F5 (IBM Laptop). When the adapter is off it
correctly reports no bluetooth adapters present. When the adapter is
on it reports bluetooth is disabled and provides a button to turn on
bluetooth. Clicking this button has no affect.

* The show bluetooth icon option is enabled.
* No bluetooth icon in the notification area.
* Bluetooth is unusable in this state.

Bluetooth on this hardware worked perfectly in 9.04.

[Bug 182960] Re: Please set memory limits by default

2009-04-15 Thread Brad Johnson
I believe the problem is when an application allocates memory in very
small chunks. The OOM killer works well if you ask for 5GB and there is
only 1GB in the system, but nothing prevents an app from taking up all
available memory, forcing the system to grind to a halt and even if it
might recover after several hours... once it crosses the limit. That's
not enough because the system is dead in the mean time.

BTW, I've had this problem repeatedly in the past with evolution and
file-roller.

[Bug 361993] [NEW] MAPI - can't send mails to addresses on same server

2009-04-15 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

When I send emails using openchange's mapi support on evolution, I can email
others with a different mail server than mine (if mine is x...@a.com, they would
be y...@b.com)

I cannot email others on my own email server (y...@a.com).

This issue is also logged on the openchange bug list, but may be with the
plugin and not the openchange libraries.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Send email to someone with same email server *...@myserver.com
2. Receive email from mailserver stating The e-mail account does not exist
at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nautilus

Under system-preferences-file management, the media tab does not detect
a lot of the installed applications.

For instance, on a standard hardy alpha 4 install, both Music Player and
Photos are disabled, with the text No applications installed, despite
Rhythmbox and F-spot being installed on the system.
Additionally, under the other media section, it's not possible to select
brasero to be the default for blank cd disc.

This tab seems to duplicate most of the functionality from Removable
Drives and Media, and the settings in it don't match up with what's set in
the removable drives and media app. I think it should probably be hidden in
the standard hardy install to prevent confusion.

For reference, here's the list of mime types nautilus uses:
   media_audio_cdda_combobox, x-content/audio-cdda,
   media_video_dvd_combobox,x-content/video-dvd,
   media_music_player_combobox, x-content/audio-player,

So. I believe this bug is defiantly not a duplicate of #215904.

I've looked at the code and there's something that puzzles me and that's
how sb_debug_write is in the stack trace 6 times like it is recursively
calling itself. Is this what his happening in the macro
LBER_SBIOD_WRITE_NEXT()?

[Bug 239184] Re: evolution-exchange-storage crash in e2k_global_catalog_lookup and ber_flush2

2008-06-11 Thread Brad Johnson
I had enabled hardy-proposed and upgraded libldap-2.4-2 and tested for
bug #215904. At the time I tested it really seemed to help reduce
crashing, but still crashed from time to time. After the update it
crashed much less often, maybe 2 times per day rather than once every 30
min.

My libldap-2.4-2 is version 2.4.7-6ubuntu4.2.

I believe that is the updated version. Is that correct?

[Bug 237962] [NEW] file-roller uses up all memory when switching to view all files after viewing as folder if you select a subfolder

2008-06-06 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Open a .tar file that is 2.1GB with many files with a few nested subdirectories.
Select View : View as a Folder.
Expand out the folder view several folders deep.
Click on a subfolder at least one or two levels deep.
Select View : View All Files.

file-roller begins to allocate memory and eventually brings the whole
machine to a crawl. If you don't kill the process before you run
completely out of memory the only way to recover is a reboot.

I don't know if this well help, but here's a backtrace from gdb. I hit
ctrl-c once it began allocating out of control. Here's the backtrace:

[Bug 237969] [NEW] Deal with runaway processes that keep allocating memory gracefully

2008-06-06 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

Currently in Hardy it seems that if a process allocates memory
continually it will eventually bring the system to a crawl requiring a
reboot.

As a desktop system there needs to be a way for Ubuntu to make the user
experience better when things like this go wrong. There are many
possible solutions:

- simple sane default ulimit (possibly with some log or automated bug reporting
when triggered)
- daemon that watches for processes that are out of control and kills them
automatically.
- way to bring up a gui (that can be guaranteed to work even if the memory is
paging like crazy) to kill the run-away process.

It's easy to see that this problem needs to be addressed by looking at
the many bug reports on launchpad that mention a run away process or
memory leak.

Verified that smbc has the same problem with the truncated list of
servers in our domain. Also, stops at L.

So the problem isn't with nautilus. Which package should this bug be
moved to?

[Bug 236192] [NEW] Only ~2280 computers shown when there should be ~3759

2008-05-30 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

In Ubuntu 8.04 amd_64 when I go to Places:Network and then click on
Windows Network and then click on our domain/workgroup only the first
2280 (on second try 2288) computers are shown when there should be 3759.
No servers starting with letters past the letter L are shown.

This truncation happens when Viewed as Icons or when View as List,
but nautilus takes up alot or memory (~2.2GB) and is really slow (~2-3
min) to display the results in View as List.

This behavior is also present on a clean installation with no
modifications so it isn't caused by any secondary software installations
or system modifications.

[Bug 227958] [NEW] No way to change icon Visibility once hidden

2008-05-07 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

In the Applet Preferences there is an option called Hide Icon once this is
selected the icon won't appear in the system tray. There is no option in
tracker-preferences to show the icon and because the icon isn't in the tray
there is no way to get back into Applet Preferences once it is hidden.

I had to edit .config/tracker/tracker-applet.cfg by hand to change
AutoHideIcon back to false.

BTW, I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.

I've also filed this bug upstream at:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=532050

Hello Chris,

This was seems to have been fixed in the hardy final release. I believe
an update to openoffice or some related package came through about a
week or two after I opened this bug fixed this problem.

thanks,
Brad

[Bug 220801] Re: Ubuntu hangs after connecting with cellphone

2008-04-28 Thread Brad Johnson
This happens to me as well. I believe it happens right at the beginning
of the file transfer. I didn't notice my keyboard lights flashing, but
the computer was definitely locked as my sound card started looping the
buffer.

I was able to reproduce the 2 of 2 times I tried. I didn't see anything
interesting in the logs after reboot.

I'm running 64 bit Hardy on Intel Core2 processor.

[Bug 208854] [NEW] Mail merge is broken on amd64 when importing from Evolution

2008-03-29 Thread Brad Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm running Hardy beta on amd64.
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3

When I try to do a mail merge from the Evolution address book everything
seems like it is going to work (the wizard displays information from
Evolution) and seems to work, but the printed output contains a single
page of just the template as it looks on the screen.

I've tried the same thing in Gutsy on amd64 and had no problem as well
as Debian on i386.

I didn't try a mail merge from another datasource so I don't know if
mailmerge is generally broken or just merge from Evolution.

[Bug 148232] Re: Gutsy Beta: Ethernet interface (Intel PRO/1000) present but unusable after update

2007-10-04 Thread Brad Johnson
After some research I started messing with NetworkManager and dbus. It
appears that one or both was semi-locked up or it's configuration
screwed up. Killing NetworkManager and restarting debus made my ethernet
interface selectable for about a minute. After that it was grayed out
and no longer selectable. Plugging and unplugging the network cable
several times would wake up network manager for another minute or so
and selecting the ethernet interface during this time seems to have
cleared up the problem. After a reboot and selecting several times
between ethernet and wireless interfaces the ethernet interface remains
usable. Before someone makes the comment, yes, my ethernet cable and
link were good and tested before this bug was opened.

I have no idea what the issue is/was here. Maybe someone can shed some
light on this for me. Over the next couple days I'll see if anything
similar happens again.
