[Bug 1905054] Re: Firefox 83 Breaks WebGL

2021-10-22 Thread Craig McQueen
I upgraded my PC from 21.04 to 21.10. I found that WebGL doesn't work in
the snap firefox that 21.10 installed.

I uninstalled the snap firefox and installed the deb firefox via apt.
That fixed the WebGL issue.

[Bug 1947257] Re: Partial profile loss on upgrade from 21.04 to 21.10

2021-10-21 Thread Craig McQueen
I upgraded from 21.04 to 21.10. Other (non-sudo) users of the computer
reported that their Firefox profiles were lost.

I uninstalled the snap firefox, and installed deb firefox via apt. Their
profiles "came back".

I guess the snap firefox looks for profiles in a different location, and
the profiles aren't transferred from the old deb-firefox location to the
snap-firefox-expected location.

It looks as though this transition to snap firefox has been done badly.

[Bug 1892712] [NEW] Printing garbage to Brother HL-L2375DW printer

2020-08-24 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

Starting a few weeks ago, sometimes trying to print ends up printing
pages and pages of garbage/junk/mojibake.

It's not all the time. Printer drivers are somewhat mysterious, because
if I delete them, they automatically reappear. Often a program will list
two printer drivers for the one printer, and one of them prints okay
while the other prints garbage, and it's not at all obvious which is
which.

This affects two Ubuntu PCs, one a desktop running Ubuntu 20.04.1, the
other a laptop running Lubuntu 20.04.1.

The printer is on the network. I guess the computers find it via
Zeroconf.

The problem seems to be Ubuntu, rather than the printer, because
printing from a Windows PC works fine. And, for months, printing from
Ubuntu also worked fine.

I also noticed earlier, several months back, that double-sided printing
was misbehaving, always flipping on the short edge rather than the long
edge, no matter which was selected. Short edge is the setting I usually
don't want -- the other side is effectively upside down.

I have also noticed that selecting 2 or more copies doesn't print
multiple copies, but just one copy.

2020-02-11 Thread Craig McQueen
I'm having this problem -- printing duplex on short edge instead of long
edg -- with a Brother HL-L2375DW.

I'm running Ubuntu 19.10. It was working in Ubuntu 19.04. But, I thought
it had also been printing correctly previously in 19.10, until it
stopped working more recently. But I'm not 100% sure when it stopped
working, since I don't print duplex very often.

[Bug 1661891] [NEW] Access to IPv4-only subdomain via IPv6

2017-02-04 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

I access the following URL, which is done via IPv6 and returns my IPv6
address:

https://craig.mcqueen.id.au/ip.php

Then I access:

https://ipv4.craig.mcqueen.id.au/ip.php

That sub-domain has only a DNS A record, which should force it to be an
IPv4 access. But, somehow Firefox manages to access it via IPv6 and
return my IPv6 address again.

I think Firefox should access the second URL via IPv4.

[Bug 348522] Re: gvfsd-gphoto2 copies files to RAM (unsuitable for really large files)

2015-01-07 Thread Craig McQueen
The memory usage seems to be proportional to the size of the files
copied. When I copied 370 MB of files, according to 'top' the gvfsd-
gphoto2 memory usage in RES column at the end was 420 MB. Memory is
freed when I unplug USB. So a workaround is to copy only a few 100 MB of
files, then unplug USB, then replug and resume.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. Package gvfs-backends is version
1.20.1-1ubuntu1.

[Bug 1207614] Re: Some gtkterm keyboard shortcuts interfere with terminal keystrokes

2014-08-07 Thread Craig McQueen
See this gtkterm bug report which covers it:
https://fedorahosted.org/gtkterm/ticket/11

See this source code which confirms it:
https://git.fedorahosted.org/cgit/gtkterm.git/tree/src/widgets.c#n159

Yet, still in Ubuntu 14.04 gtkterm:

Send Break Ctrl-B
Load Configuration Ctrl-O

So I think the source project is okay, but for some reason it's still
not right in Ubuntu.

lpadmin -p Hewlett-Packard-HP-LaserJet-4050-Series -o pdftops-renderer-
default=pdftops

and after that it printed successfully.

Does that command need to be issued once per boot, once per user? Does
it help to do it sudo?

[Bug 907950] Re: UniversalIndentGUI is not in the application menu

2014-04-30 Thread Craig McQueen
Now in Ubuntu 14.04, I am not able to find UiGUI in the Unity dash by
typing universal or indent or anything else sensible. I have to do
Alt-F2 (run a command) and run universalindentgui.

[Bug 369008] Re: mdns lookups fail over ipv6

2014-04-09 Thread Craig McQueen
Debugging the case of scope ID == 0 when family is set to AF_INET6...

I'm finding that when family is set to AF_INET6, then
_nss_gethostbyname2_r is called instead of _nss_gethostbyname4_r. This
decision is made by libresolv. I did 'apt-get source libc6', which got
me eglib-2.17 source (this is on Ubuntu 13.10 at the moment). In
sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c, I indeed see that it's only calling
_nss_gethostbyname4_r when family is set to AF_UNSPEC. A comment says
gethostbyname4_r sends out parallel A and queries and is thus only
suitable for PF_UNSPEC.

So that looks like a clash of requirements:

a) _nss_gethostbyname4_r is needed for IPv6 scope ID
b) _nss_gethostbyname4_r is allegedly not suitable for IPv6-only queries,
because it sends out parallel A and queries.

Surely _nss_gethostbyname4_r SHOULD be used in order to get IPv6 scope
ID.

What should we do next?

[Bug 369008] Re: mdns lookups fail over ipv6

2014-04-09 Thread Craig McQueen
In eglibc SVN repository revision 20392, Tue Aug 28 14:14:43 2012 UTC,
the getaddrinfo() code was changed to call _nss_gethostbyname4_r only
for family AF_UNSPEC. The commit comment just says Merge changes
between r20213 and r20391 from /fsf/trunk.

Looking at /fsf/trunk/libc/sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c, I trace it to
revision 20296. The commit comment just says Import glibc-mainline for
2012-08-23.

This I trace to glibc commit 8479f23aa1:
http://repo.or.cz/w/glibc.git/commit/8479f23aa1d5e5477a37f46823856bdafaedfa46

I think this commit is ultimately problematic because it breaks IPv6
scope ID retrieval. I think it should be reverted, so that
_nss_gethostbyname4_r is always called for IPv6. Whatever problem it was
aiming to solve, it should probably be solved a different way.

[Bug 369008] Re: mdns lookups fail over ipv6

2014-04-07 Thread Craig McQueen
I've tried applying the patch. I can confirm via Python
socket.getaddrinfo() that the IPv6 scope ID is now being set. So that
seems to be a good fix.

However, if I try ping6 or ssh -6 to my own PC craig-linux.local, I still get
an Invalid argument error:
$ ping6 craig-linux.local
connect: Invalid argument
$ ssh -6 craig-linux.local
ssh: connect to host craig-linux.local port 22: Invalid argument

But this works:
$ ping6 -I eth2 craig-linux.local
PING craig-linux.local(fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2) from fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2
eth2: 56 data bytes
...

If I strace it, I see:
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_INET6, sin6_port=htons(1025), inet_pton(AF_INET6,
fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2, sin6_addr), sin6_flowinfo=0, sin6_scope_id=0}, 28)
= -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

So the scope ID is still set to 0.

[Bug 369008] Re: mdns lookups fail over ipv6

2014-04-07 Thread Craig McQueen
Okay I think I've found a problem with getaddrinfo() when the AF_INET6
family is specified. For example, Python's socket.getaddrinfo() provides
scope ID if _all_ families are looked-up, but it returns scope ID of 0
if only IPv6 family is looked up. E.g. in Python:

 import socket
 from pprint import pprint
 a = socket.getaddrinfo(craig-linux.local, None)
 pprint(a)
[(10, 1, 6, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2%eth2', 0, 0, 3)),
 (10, 2, 17, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2%eth2', 0, 0, 3)),
 (10, 3, 0, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2%eth2', 0, 0, 3)),
 (2, 1, 6, '', ('192.168.5.3', 0)),
 (2, 2, 17, '', ('192.168.5.3', 0)),
 (2, 3, 0, '', ('192.168.5.3', 0))]
 a = socket.getaddrinfo(craig-linux.local, None, socket.AF_INET6)
 pprint(a)
[(10, 1, 6, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2', 0, 0, 0)),
 (10, 2, 17, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2', 0, 0, 0)),
 (10, 3, 0, '', ('fe80::21b:21ff:febb:73b2', 0, 0, 0))]

So for some reason the scope ID is present when doing all-families look-
up, but lacking in the IPv6-only family look-up.

ping6 fails because it is specifying AF_INET6.

I've got a test server listening on both IPv4 and IPv6. If I connect to
it with telnet craig-linux.local 12100 then it is able to connect
successfully to the IPv6 address. But if I specify the -6 switch,
telnet -6 craig-linux.local 12100 then it fails to connect.

[Bug 1207605] Re: modem-manager segfault trying to connect to Wi-Fi

2013-08-01 Thread Craig McQueen
I noticed it had a reference to ttyS4, which was connected to an
external modem. I unplugged that, and then tried again. This time there
was no modem-manager segfault. But it still failed to connect, with DHCP
time-outs. That's strange because I can connect to the access point with
an iPhone 4 okay.

[Bug 1207614] [NEW] Some gtkterm keyboard shortcuts interfere with terminal keystrokes

2013-08-01 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

gtkterm has mostly Shift-Ctrl-X style keyboard shortcuts. But it has two
Ctrl-X style short-cuts:

Send Break Ctrl-B
Load Configuration Ctrl-O

For me, Ctrl-O in particular gets in the way of the nano WriteOut
command which is Ctrl-O.

It would be better to change Send Break to Shift-Ctrl-B, and Load
Configuration to Shift-Ctrl-O.

[Bug 912695] Re: libpam_blue requires root, fails if non-privileged

2013-06-06 Thread Craig McQueen
I've tried that patch, and it does seem to work. Great!

However, it doesn't seem to work for the unlocking the lock screen
(Unity GUI, Ubuntu 13.04). I have to type in a password to unlock it.
I've seen bug reports about LDAP and the lock screen. But a fingerprint
reader PAM (pam_fingerprint-gui) does seem to work on the lock screen.
Any idea why pam-blue wouldn't work to unlock the lock screen?

[Bug 912695] Re: libpam_blue requires root, fails if non-privileged

2013-06-06 Thread Craig McQueen
I've sorted it out now. Sorry, I was doing something stupid. I had
thought it was working but I was still actually running the original
pam-blue. I thought it was working because I had solved a separate
issue -- my Bluetooth device had a space in the name, and I couldn't
figure out how to configure that in /etc/security/bluescan.conf. I
removed the space in the device name on my Bluetooth device (an iPhone),
then it worked, but still with the original pam-blue, except for lock
screen.

So what I was missing was to compile and install with the proper
configure options, so the module goes into /lib/security:

./configure --libdir=/lib/security
make
sudo make install

[Bug 912695] Re: libpam_blue requires root, fails if non-privileged

2013-06-03 Thread Craig McQueen
Is pam_blue maintained? It's looking a bit dead at the moment. How can
we contribute patches upstream or to continue development in
Debian/Ubuntu? According to the Ubuntu package, the web site is
http://pam.0xdef.net/ but that is not responding, at least not at the
moment.

Would it be possible to patch l2ping to work if a non-root user is a
member of e.g. bluetooth group? From strace, it seems the problem is
with a call to socket(PF_BLUETOOTH, SOCK_RAW, 0), and raw sockets
normally need root user or capability CAP_NET_RAW.

This is happening to me too. It started with kernel 3.2.0-39, and also
happens in kernel 3.2.0-40 and 3.2.0-41, although with 3.2.0-41 it ran
okay for a few minutes before crashing. (I'm also running the -pae

[Bug 936858] [NEW] Scaled video displays only blank screen

2012-02-20 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

If I try to play any video (DVD, AVI files, whatever) with Movie Player,
then it usually gives me a blank screen. However, if I select a 1:1 zoom
or 1:2 zoom or something like that, it does seem to show it. But then it
disappears again when a DVD chapter change occurs. It seems that video
scaling isn't working.

This video card worked with older Ubuntu 10.10 version, but not 11.10 (I
didn't try 11.04).

[Bug 480521] [NEW] Video does not scale up to window/screen

2009-11-10 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

When playing video in Movie Player or VLC, it does not scale up to fill
the window (or screen, when full-screen). gxine kind-of can, but has
flickers of horizontal lines across the entire screen even when the
video window is small.

In Movie Player, the zoom functions don't change the image size.

Full-screen playback worked fine in Ubuntu 9.04.

The PC is using the sis driver.

I'm not sure if this is an issue with gstreamer, Xvideo, sis driver.

[Bug 66933] Re: Recent Documents doesn't include files opened from within OOO

2009-05-02 Thread Craig McQueen
In Jaunty I was still having this issue. I've done the incremental
Ubuntu upgrades since, I can't remember when, possibly Feisty.

I followed the suggestion of deleting my user .openoffice.org2
directory, but that didn't fix it. I then tried deleting my user
.openoffice.org directory, and that fixed the issue. (It also lost my
OpenOffice options, so I had to re-do those.)

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I'm using xubuntu 8.04.01, up-to-date as of today. Running on an old
laptop (500 MHz) with Silicon Motion X windows driver.

Being an old laptop, I'm usually just using totem for audio (mp3).
Usually, totem crashes the first time I try to open the mp3 file, but
then succeeds on the second attempt and plays the audio file properly.
This indicates a race condition in audio or video start-up I assume.

[Bug 267292] [NEW] Crash X when display goes to power saving mode

2008-09-06 Thread Craig McQueen
Public bug reported:

I've got an old IBM laptop (it's an unusual one; i1300 or something like
that I think; 500 MHz CPU). Ever since I installed Gutsy I think (or
maybe Feisty, can't remember), up to now with the current Hardy, display
power-saving mode has been a problem. When display power-saving mode
starts, it is impossible to exit power-saving mode. The keyboard appears
locked up (caps lock key does nothing) and moving the mouse doesn't exit
power saving mode. However, it is still possible to SSH into the
computer over the network. I think killing the X server and gdm revives
it (if I remember correctly).

The X server is running the Silicon Motion driver.

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

didn't.

Now openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 is available in the mainstream
hardy repository. I've upgraded to it, and it does indeed seem to fix
the issue. So I guess this bug can be closed, unless someone else is
still having problems.

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

2008-06-26 Thread Craig McQueen
1) I've confirmed the report that switching to the OpenOffice.org open/save
dialogs avoids the bug. Hopefully this narrows down the issue.
2) I've tried disabling Java in OpenOffice settings. Didn't help.
3) I've run strace:
strace -f ooffice -norestore /tmp/ooo4.log
Then I did File-Open and it crashed. The resulting file is attached.
Interestingly, once when I did an strace, it didn't crash. But only once.
Is there someone who can make sense of the strace log?

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

2008-06-25 Thread Craig McQueen
ilpara -- as for how to investigate this bug, here are two ideas:

1) Compare the output of dpkg -l (or whatever the command is to list
installed packages and versions) on good and bad installations.

2) Someone tell us how to get a crash trace from OpenOffice (since the
instructions for using apport didn't work).

I'm an embedded software engineer which means I know the theory and
practice of debugging on embedded platforms, but I've never really done
programming/debugging for Linux so far.

The only package I can think of that may be unusual in my installation
is java. I've been trying to get jEdit, JBidWatcher and Firefox java
plugins working, and I've got strange results from a few of the packages
I've installed (icedtea, java5, java6 something like that). But it seems
unlikely that the Open/Save As dialog boxes would have anything to do
with java. But I'll try a few things and see if I can uncover anything
useful.

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

2008-06-25 Thread Craig McQueen
I'm changing the bug status back to New since Incomplete is
apparently not the right status.

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

2008-06-24 Thread Craig McQueen
I'm also encountering this bug with version 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 in Hardy. I
enabled apport as requested by the previous commenter, and restarted.
Then I recreated the crash. But no crash file in /var/crash. Sorry, but
I followed the directions as given.

This is a fairly major bug -- it prevents creating any new documents.

[Bug 241256] Re: Openoffice 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1 apps crash on save as / open

2008-06-24 Thread Craig McQueen
Thanks for noting the work-around. Note that it stops SCIM input from
working (Japanese in my case).

I'm interested in the downgrade option, but openoffice.org is split into
numerous packages so I don't know how to do that.

[Bug 156355] Re: Bibletime - select additional work - does not show additional parallel text

2008-05-05 Thread Craig McQueen
I've just upgraded to Hardy, and discovered that Hardy still has
BibleTime version 1.6.4. Why have this broken version in Hardy, when
version 1.6.5 has been available for months? Frustrating.

[Bug 106822] Re: Nautilus Changes file type wrongly

2008-02-09 Thread Craig McQueen
I am being bugged by this bug. In my case, I am viewing files in
Nautilus in list mode, sorted by Type. I'm looking at a folder with
files ending in .c.BAK. Their type is given as backup file. But when
I click on the file, it changes type to C source code. Because I'm
viewing sorted by Type, the file disappears from view, I guess somewhere
further down the list.

That's a nuisance because I was trying to select all the backup files
by clicking on the first then shift-clicking on the last. It can't be
done!

I'm using Gutsy Gibbon.

A similar bug: when a translation is open in a window, click on the
select a work icon. Choose another translation from the list. The
window closes.

[Bug 156355] Re: Bibletime - select additional work - does not show additional parallel text

2008-01-06 Thread Craig McQueen
I've just built BibleTime version 1.6.5 from the source. It seems to fix
this bug. It would be good to back-port this new version into Gutsy,
since 1.6.4 is such a feature regression.

[Bug 156355] Re: Bibletime - select additional work - does not show additional parallel text

2007-12-25 Thread Craig McQueen
I just upgraded to Gutsy, and now I'm having the same problem.
It appears to happen with any language -- English, Hebrew, Greek. One exception
seems to be the ALT module -- if I choose that, it does appear correctly in a
second column.

[Bug 156355] Re: Bibletime - select additional work - does not show additional parallel text

2007-12-25 Thread Craig McQueen
The BibleTime web site (www.bibletime.info) says a new version 1.6.5 is
available. It contains several important fixes in the bookshelfmanager,
the sessionmanagement and in the text-display windows. Maybe that fixes
this issue. Can Gutsy get this in backports?

[Bug 162308] Re: Crashes in 7.10 when Display Options are changed

2007-12-25 Thread Craig McQueen
I've confirmed this on my installation of Gutsy. Version is 1.6.4.dfsg-0ubuntu2.
To reproduce -- with the ESV translation open in a window, click the Display
Options icon, then select Show scripture cross references.
There is a new version available -- 1.6.5. Perhaps it fixes this?

2007-12-25 Thread Craig McQueen
Confirmed. Version is 1.6.4.dfsg-0ubuntu2.
To reproduce -- open a translation in a window. Click on the Select an
additional work icon and choose another translation from the list. Expected
behaviour is to split the window into two columns, with the two translations
side-by-side. But instead observe that only the first translation continues to
be shown.

[Bug 110166] Re: openvpn doesn't reconnect after suspend/resume

2007-06-19 Thread Craig McQueen
A workaround is to edit the file:
/etc/default/acpi-support
To the line that begins with:
STOP_SERVICES=...
add openvpn to the line.

I assume this should be considered a workaround, not a fix.

[Bug 110166] Re: openvpn doesn't reconnect after suspend/resume

2007-05-17 Thread Craig McQueen
I am having a similar issue in Feisty. It didn't happen in Edgy, but it
does in Feisty.

In my case, I'm running OpenVPN as a server on my home desktop computer.
It's got two connections open -- a UDP port and a TCP port. It's using
tun0 and tun1.

When I boot the computer, it runs fine and I can connect. But if I
suspend the computer, and then restart the computer, OpenVPN no longer
works. OpenVPN accepts incoming connections, but no data can be
transferred. I've discovered that the ifconfig command lists only eth0
and lo, but the tun0 and tun1 are missing. If I do sudo
/etc/init.d/openvpn restart then tun0 and tun1 reappear and everything
works fine then.

In Edgy, I didn't have this problem. I could suspend and restart, and
OpenVPN worked just fine.
