That's bug 2062082 but I'm not sure how much it matters on Jammy.

Good, thanks.

It's not possible to have (a) and (b) simultaneously. What options
exactly do you see in the menu?

[Bug 2080602] Re: [regression] GNOME 46/47 dropped support for Xilinx Mali graphics

2024-09-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
Xilinx Mali support was originally written for GNOME 42 but it has
bitrotted since then. We need to apply a few fixes to get it working
again in GNOME 46 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) and later:

  * https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4019 or
    https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4021
  * https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4036
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ 1. Log into an Ubuntu (GNOME + Wayland) session on Xilinx hardware.
+ 2. Verify you can log in, there are no obvious rendering failures and that it
really is a Wayland session (environment XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland and
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0).
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ The Mutter/GNOME startup procedure had to be modified for this fix as well as
some texture format parameters. So there is a small risk to:
+ (a) The ability of any machine to log into a Wayland session; and
+ (b) Rendering correctness once logged in.
+
+ [ Other Info ]

[Bug 2071837] Re: Gnome session crashes on screen turn on

2024-09-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

The "oibaf" graphics packages you are using are not supported by Ubuntu.
Please remove them from your system and report any new bugs you find
after that.

Please open the 'Additional Drivers' app and use it to install an Nvidia

[Bug 2073016] Re: Ubuntu Dock appears on lock screen if Dash-to-Panel is enabled at the same time ["Impossible to enumerate trash children: TypeError: this.location is null"]

2024-09-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Indeed that's a risk with ALL extensions. Because if any extension
crashes, conflicts, refuses or just fails to follow
deactivate/reactivate requests then it will break the lock screen.

We mitigate this risk by only recommending the Ubuntu-supported
extensions (i.e. not dash-to-panel) where the quality can be controlled.

People often ask: Why aren't extensions just sandboxed and secure?
Because redesigning the whole ecosystem and starting from scratch with
zero supported extensions is not a priority for GNOME, AFAICT. So you
have a choice between no extensions, or extensions that are all-powerful
and potentially insecure/unstable.

No. The exact bug (where opening the laptop after it has been on for a

[Bug 2081140] Re: [regression] Very poor performance in Nvidia Wayland sessions

2024-09-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes it's the kernel. Reverting to kernel 6.8 has fixed the performance
issue on 535. I am yet to test 6.8 with 560...

And it appears the missing information in NVIDIA Settings is still
missing, so that's unrelated to the performance regression.

** Summary changed:

[Bug 2081140] Re: [regression] Very poor performance in Nvidia Wayland sessions with kernel 6.11

2024-09-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
These results are weirdly consistent and repeatable across purges,
reinstalls and reboots:

SLOW: Nvidia-560 + Linux 6.8
SLOW: Nvidia-560 + Linux 6.11
SLOW: Nvidia-535 + Linux 6.11
FAST: Nvidia-535 + Linux 6.8
FAST: Nvidia-550 + Linux 6.11

I'm currently testing on a Turing card, if that's important.

[Bug 2081153] Re: X / GUI not starting after boot

2024-09-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt

2024-09-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If Xwayland isn't leaving core files (which would show up as crash files
in /var/crash) then it might be inheriting Xorg's built-in crash
handler, logging the stack trace to *somewhere* and that never makes it
to the system journal.

[Bug 2080966] Re: I have random log out as well as a flickering dock bar

2024-09-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This gnome-shell suicide is the only explanation I can see:

Sep 18 15:01:22 shanu-Inspiron-15-3511 gnome-shell[16721]: Connection to
xwayland lost
Sep 18 15:01:22 shanu-Inspiron-15-3511 gnome-shell[16721]: Xwayland terminated,
exiting since it was mandatory
Sep 18 15:01:22 shanu-Inspiron-15-3511 gnome-shell[16721]: JS ERROR:
Gio.IOErrorEnum: Xwayland exited unexpectedly

@resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21:20
Sep 18 15:01:22 shanu-Inspiron-15-3511 gnome-shell[16721]: Execution of main.js
threw exception: Module resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js threw an
exception

Also pid 16721 is the correct session (the second last gnome-shell
instance in the log).

So we're probably looking for an Xwayland crash but I'm not seeing any
crash reports. Do you have any new files in /var/crash/ ?

[Bug 2060268] Re: Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver

The fix has stopped working in Oracular kernel 6.11. Looks like the
reason is no '/sys/devices/platform/simple-framebuffer.0/drm/card0'

[Bug 2080966] Re: I have random log out as well as a flickering dock bar

2024-09-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I don't see any random logouts in the attached logs. Let's treat it as a
crash anyway...

[Bug 2080966] Re: I have random log out as well as a flickering dock bar

2024-09-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you're reporting multiple unrelated issues here. Please
be careful to only report one issue per bug report.

* kernel: ACPI Error: are BIOS bugs and can be safely ignored in most
cases. Also Ubuntu can't fix those.

* Random log out: Sounds like the biggest issue so let's focus on that.

* Flickering dock bar: Please provide a video but also it should get its
own separate bug report.

[Bug 2080821] Re: Custom caps lock action inconsistent on login screen

2024-09-17 Thread Daniel Edholm
An additional observation that seem to support that there are indeed two
subsystems which monitor the "Caps Lock" state, is that the PAM auth
dialog seems to have the same state as the lock screen, i.e. the
opposite of the DE state. So at each PAM/sudo auth (I normally use
fingerprint reading) where I have enter my password, I first have to
switch the state of "Caps Lock", and then switch again for regular
desktop use.

[Bug 2067831] Re: can't use arrows when renaming on the desktop

2024-09-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Merged:
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/shell-extensions/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng/-/merge_requests/6

But we're missing a changelog entry. Once there is one, please create a
debdiff, attach it here and then subscribe ubuntu-sponsors.

** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
During a file rename operation on the desktop, when using the cursor
keys to move the cursor forward or backwards, the dialog closes. It's
only possible to move the cursor by using the mouse.
+
+ Moving the cursor when renaming a file is very common, because a lot of
+ cases consist on adding or removing something at the end of the
+ filename, or change the extension, so nearly all users will suffer this
+ bug. It's true that they can use the mouse, but for users used to the
+ keyboard, this is a very cumbersome bug.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ In the desktop, right-click over an icon and select 'Rename...'. When
+ the rename popup appears, press the left or the right cursor key to move
+ the cursor.
+
+ If the bug is there, the popup will disappear and no renaming will
+ happen. If the bug has been fixed, the text cursor will move forward or
+ backwards, as expected.
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ The patch mainly affects the hotkeys code, so a mistake in those changes
+ could disable the keyboard shortcuts for the desktop. In the worst case,
+ the desktop main program won't run, thus leaving the desktop without
+ icons. No data loss would happen, so just reverting to the previous
+ version of the code would be enough to fix the problem.

[Bug 1987209] Re: gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes with SIGSEGV when screen locker activates (jj), immediately after meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion 'logical_monitor != NULL' failed

2024-09-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It looks like 24.04 systems are still hitting this crash, but a lack of
debug symbols is hiding it:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/994152ae30814aa656a4696f7b9c3bcd8208fa59

Peoples' journals end with:

  meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion 'logical_monitor
!= NULL' failed

But the only reason I'm not reopening this right now is that I don't see
it happening in 24.10. If it really is fixed in 24.10 then the correct
status of the bug would be closed still, just Fix Released.
