[Bug 1636573] Re: xinit flooding syslog

2017-10-06 Thread Davias
Thanks Mike, following your step I was able to use the YouTube plugin
5.4.5 again on My Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS AMD64. I first had to install
standard "python-setuptools" package, then proceeded with the above
steps.

Thank you!!! I was getting mad...very bad that you have to do such patch
on a LTS install, BTW...

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2017-07-26 Thread Davias
Ok I got it! I was about to implement this solution
http://www.calgorithms.com/blog/2014/07/30/fixing-multiple-monitor-
position-in-ubuntu-gnome-14-dot-04/ (thanks for this one, even it was a
patch I did not like to use) when I was enlighted by this: Gnome is not
getting monitor IDs correctly. I have 2 digital BenQ and one analog
Asus. If I run Ubuntu 16.04 (on Gnome Fallback) System settings, they
are identified correctly, albeit in the wrong position (note: right
after login, the monitor position is set correctly for a few seconds,
then when desktop is loaded, is messed up again). So, I execute step 1
of the above solution, deleted monitors.xml, installed gnome-control-
center and run it: the monitors where wrongly identified. I changed
monitor position using the wrong IDs for the monitor, getting them were
I wanted. Then just shut down and re-boot...voilà: after login the
desktop was loaded with correct monitor position for all the 3 monitor!

Hope this can shed some light on this annoying Ubuntu bug...the fact
that Ubuntu system settings/monitor and gnome-control-center IDs monitor
in different ways is clearly the problem. I remember something similar
when using Catalyst Control Center in 14.04 with fgrlx: could not get it
to set it right - then, using system settings/monitor, I was able to fix
it - and it stayed there until the upgrade to 16.04.

[Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2017-07-08 Thread Davias
Thanks Scott for #166...indeed the memory is excessive from the start,
but I can live with that: 1 GB, ok, another 1 GB for firefox, ok...the
problem is that java keeps growing...until it eats all the memory (I
have 8 GB), the system starts to go paging on disks and become unusable.
I'm using Ubuntu since 7.04 and upgraded ever since, this is the first
time I have such serious problem.

2017-06-21 Thread Davias
Yeah, .. what's wrong with Ubuntu 16.04...? This LTS update I delayed a
lot, waiting for support of the official AMDGPU-PRO driver, was really a
nightmare. My system was upgraded since 7.04 and everything just worked
PERFECTLY...Now I find myself with low ram warnings, Oracle java 8
system unstable with unusable graphic performance on AMDGPU-PRO. So I
have to use Radeon FOS driver, much better, but still much slower than
the old fglrx from ADM...and I cannot go back..cannot risk a mess on my
work machine...

Hi guys, same problem after upgrading from 14.04 LTS to 16.04.2
LTS...Gnome fallback of course (it is called fallback becouse Unity is
supposed to be an improvement?) I had this problem in 14.04, with AMD
Catalyst Control Center not remembering monitors position. Solved using
system/monitors to set them and it was ok. After the upgrade, Catalyst
is gone for free Gallium...but I get the bug. Strange enough at login
monitors are correctly positioned...after login they get messed up. Same
system since 7.04, always worked with 3 monitors...I know there is a
script to work back the monitor config file...but is such an inelegant
solutions...c'mon this bug is old years!

[Bug 872220] Re: Fails to boot when there's problems with softraid

2014-01-07 Thread Davias
I was dropped to busybox on my RAID1 Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 system uptodate. cat
/proc/mdstat reported [U_] on all 3 md devices (/, swap /home), but I was
pretty sure the disk (sdb) was functional.
On reset I pressed ESC to get to the grub menu to select rescue, I could see
the message array degraded press Y to boot degraded but could not, it
automaticcally selected N and drop me again into busybox. From there I could
resync the array manually with:
mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdb1
waited for the md0 to resync and checked again with cat /proc/mdstat that md0
was ok. Repeated the operation for md1 and checked, then md3 and checked again
that all MD devices were [UU] good. Reset and the system came up OK!
I then checked extensively disk sdb with SMART that reported no errors and no
bad sectors. Did a surface test: ok; a fsck, ok.

So, bottom line, array went out of sync for no apparent reason, and could not
start degraded...
Any ideas?

update: Hardware watchdog driver for the AMD/ATI SP5100 chipset. The
TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) timer is a watchdog timer that will reboot
the machine after its expiration. The expiration time can be configured
with the heartbeat parameter. To compile this driver as a module,
choose M here: the module will be called sp5100_tco.

...so it is something we can live without

[Bug 478761] Re: failed to start scanner: Invalid argument

2010-06-01 Thread Davias
Dear Doug,
sorry for the delay, I finally had time to give a try to your solution: IT
WORKS! (where nothing else did...)

This is what I did:
1) started Windows 2000 in VirtualBox 3.1.6 on my Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64
2) on the Devices menu of VirtualBox I selected unknown USB device 05D8:4022
- this is the address where my Mustek scanner lives on.
3) started DirectScan, the Mustek scan program on Win2K
4) the Win2K device disconnect window appeared, informing that it was now safe
to unplug USB device Mustek ScanPlus 1200
5) at THE SAME TIME the XSane dialog box appeared offering which device to use
for scanning, my webcam or Mustek ScanPlus 1200 - this is common as I have 2
scanning device, at least for sane.
6) selected the Mustek ScanPlus 1200 and instead of getting open of device
gt68xx:libusb:001:009 failed: Invalid argument
I had xsane up and running!

So definitely using the Windows driver took the scanner away from this
strange lock mode it was fallen!

Thanks again for your solution,
Dave

2010-05-28 Thread Davias

working with 9.04)

scanimage: open of device gt68xx:libusb:001:009 failed: Invalid argument

tried also with libsane 1.0.19 ... nothing. And I read around the bug is
still there in 10.04

Any help? TIA

[Bug 486361] Re: raid1 filesystems cannot yet be mounted after karmic upgrade

2009-12-01 Thread Davias
Exactly the same situation: I had my workstation perfectly working with 9.04
AMD64 with all latest updates and did a Dist Upgrade from Upgrade Manager. The
upgrade did not complete for some reasons logged into /var/ could not do
anything but restart the system.
At boot, the system could not mount any of the md devs I have, (0,1,2,3,
respectively /, swap, /home, /stripe).
Could do nothing since the busybox recovery terminal was read only. Could see
that the mds were ok using cat /proc/mdstat but could not assemble the arrays
to boot the computer. So after reading the above I did:

1) fsck (maybe not needed - but found many errors)
2) manually mount devs rw with
sudo mount /dev/md0 -o remount,rw
sudo mount /dev/md2 -o remount,rw
sudo mount /dev/md3 -o remount,rw

Note: /dev/md1 is swap, already mounted rw

3) aptitude update - could not run, so sudo dpkg --configure -a and apt dbase
rebuilded
4) aptitude update
5) aptitude upgrade and restart after finish - OK!

But to do all this I had to have:
1) another computer available
2) pretty good system knowledge
3) cold blood

I can imagine the average user clicking upgrade and then have a non
bootable system!

Ubuntu+RAID=not for fainted hearts

Rich, thank you so much for posting this info! You're the man...

[Bug 136252] Re: [gutsy] mdadm, initramfs missing ARRAY lines

2009-05-07 Thread Davias
Thank you for providing a solution - I printed the page and started to
update from 8.10 to 9.04 on AMD64 with /, /home and swap on md0, md1
md2 on RAID1, plus a RAID0 on md3 using two spare partitions on my 2
SATA disks.

But... The upgrade just went as smooth as silk! The system booted just
fine. For now I just had to reconfigure VMWare server 2.

Not so for md3, the RAID0. Raid monitor says md_d3 (instead of calling
it md3): inactive sdb4[0](S)

Any help? TIA

[Bug 285595] Re: Intrepid kernel UDMA/33 (slow disk transfer rate)

2009-04-05 Thread Davias
I confirm this bug exists on 8.10 (mythbuntu)

BIOS is set to UDMA 100 and shows it at startup, but hdparm reports
udma2 and dmesg the 40-wire cable - NOT!

I tried this solutions that worked for a guy:

Modified /etc/modules:
Code:

fuse
lp
#custom start
amd74xx
mousedev
psmouse
via82cxxx
piix
ide-core
#ide-generic
ide-disk
ide-cd
#custom end

Added to /etc/hdparm.conf:
Code:

/dev/sda {
dma = on
io32_support = 1
write_cache = on
}

but it did nothing for me - any suggestions?

BTW: System is old but proven capable of running at udma5...

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-03-28 Thread Davias
Great! It worked like a charm! I just noted that ~/bin was already there
so the first line (mkdir ~/bin) was not necessary

To make shure for others:

1) I run the updater from Vuze 3.1; when finished I closed Vuze instead of
restarting.
2) followed Anders instructions
3) logout login again

Now Vuze 4.1.04 has started! It asked to update the UPnP server to 2.5,
and this time the autoupdater worked!

My system: Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64, Linux v2.6.27-11-generic,
Java 1.6.0_12-ea Sun Microsystems Inc. SWT v3448, gtk,
amd64Athlon X2 4800, 2 GB, 2 x 400GB Sata Raid 1 (mdadm)

swapping to disk too much...

OK, Milan, you are the man. I did:

mod. the script for my amd64 as suggested: In the line available=i386 replace
it with available=ia64 then re-run the script.

it works as it should on both (a bit slow on the notebook, I will
investigate) - still the problem remain.

We had a nice info in the packet manager saying that DVD DeCSS was not
installed by default becouse blablabla and now, in the latest Ubuntu we
just have an error?

This is a serious drawback that will scare many first timer away; I'm
not a first timer and, given for granted that DVD support was installed
and working on the previous release, I had to research the net for
answer and waste several hours.

This MUST be corrected in the reps! Ubuntu team please take note.

[Bug 280034] Re: mount fails after upgrade: no disk/by-uuid

2008-10-20 Thread Davias
Exactly (almost) the same I get if I boot with a Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64
liveCD and I try to mount my /dev/md0 array on /mnt

I made a backup of / using tar, just in case an eventual upgrade to
8.04.1 will fail - but it seems that upgrading from 7.10 having the
system on RAID 1 is risky at this point... what to do?

My config:
Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 on
two SATA2 WD 400 MB HD: root on md0, swap on md1 and /home on md2
Ahtlon 64 X2 4800+ on Ausu M2N Sli Deluxe 2GB DDr2 800
ATI HD2400

[Bug 188473] Re: Mythtv DVB-T channel scanning and importing broken

2008-10-03 Thread Davias
I always had problem importing channel conf with DVB-T (DVB-S works ok) but
also with scanning:
scanning in mythbuntu worked in 7.10 using a mix of GB, Germany Spain
def.conf. to get italian channels.

Now since 8.04, it does not find anymore Mediaset2 network, which is found ok
using scan of dvb-utils.
It finds all other network, even data only and DVBH (discarded) but not the
Mediaset2 network, with the main channels Rete4, Italia1 e Canale5... annoying.

And also inputing direct freq. does not work.

This is the same with 8.04.1, 8.10 alpha 6 now Beta1

My config is:
Athlon 2000+ on MSI K7T Turbo 512MB
Nvidia GF5200 AGP
Technosat Skystar2
Hauppauge HVR 1100

Thanks to all for helping

[Bug 227819] Re: New networkmanager null assert in Hardy

2008-09-25 Thread Davias
Same problem:

NetworkManager: info SWITCH: terminating current connection 'eth0'
because it's no longer valid...

And it's happening every minute! This because I looked in the logs after
I started having serious problems.

In fact as soon as I start to increase the loads on the LAN eth0 crash and then
it's up again.
It will do that with VNC, copying a large file or streaming video.

My LAN (CAT5 100Mbps) is very simple:
Ubuntu 7.10 PC
Ubuntu 8.04 PC
Pirelli router on adsl as DHCP

And it all started after an auto-upgrade of something, could not recall,
but very recent... before everything was fine

[Bug 206495] Re: hvr-1100 is not configured properly

2008-09-17 Thread Davias
Thanks Lucas, but it does exactly the same as Nova500 settings: it
works, but only some buttons. The strange is that if you try from the
lirc console text mode, every key works ok. It is mythbuntu specific.

Guess I will wait for Intrepid - hopefully tuning the HVR1100 will work
better too in that release...

[Bug 206495] Re: hvr-1100 is not configured properly

2008-07-02 Thread Davias
I tried Lucas solution, replacing line 79 in lirc.hwdb: result, the
remote does not work anymore.

If I use the Nova T500 or 1100, the remote act the same: only very few
keys are recognized by lirc

Mario says: the bug it is fixed - does not seems so...
My installed version is 0.8.3-0ubuntu7.1 (latest), on mythbuntu 8.04 with
latest weekly patch

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-06-26 Thread Davias
So, just to summarize, we are stuck to ubuntu 7.10?

I would like to upgrade to 8.04 for many reasons, but to risk to find
myself with the same problem as before is unacceptable.

Do you guys think situation will improve by the time of 8.10 ?

Do you also find the following procedure suitable:

1) unplug 1 drive from RAID 1
2) update ubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04 with only one drive in the array
3) verify that everything works; if yes...
4) add the drive as spare and reassemble
5) No, upgrade is not good; then...
6) plug back the old drive and start the machine with that and reassemble the
other as spare...

Help? Suggestions?

TIA

thanks for providing trying solutions to this major problem as it looks to
me too.

But have any of you tried mdadm version 2.6.4, that I found around, as I
stated a few posts up?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2007-12-18 Thread Davias
Dear Diego,
thank you for clarifying matters, I'm glad that it works for you.

So now you got RAID1 as it is supposed to run. Just by changing OS...
Is it that difficult to get it to work on Ubuntu?!?
I mean, it is a serious bug - not dependent on the SW component but on OS
version - and no solution?
I thought Ubuntu was one of the most supported distributions... We have to wait
for another release?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2007-12-16 Thread Davias
Dear brunus,
no: I have not. I was thinking about using Fumihito procedure with 2.5.6, but
then I discovered that 2.6.3 existed in ubuntu repository (although Synaptic
packet manager does not find any update over 2.6.2) and was thinking about
installing that. Then I discovered 2.6.4 is the latest mdadm version as shown
above. I downloaded the source... and stopped.

I do not have enough knowledge to compile install something as
critical as driver for RAID (my RAID with data on it...); is not that
I'm scared of it, but is my production machine and cannot risk data
failure or restore time.

Also I'm not convinced of the results. If this is to just result in a
so-so procedure like selecting foulty drive from grub menu... I'll
wait for a cleaner solution - like stable and safe mdadm driver release
that will make my RAID1 start with only 1 disk WITHOUT me having to do
anything, like it should be.

Thanks all for your precious thinking.

Dave out

I am pleased to announce the availability of
   mdadm version 2.6.4

It is available at the usual places:
   http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~neilb/source/mdadm/

Does some of the following changes applies to our bug?

Changes Prior to 2.6.4 release
- Make --create --auto=mdp work for non-standard device names.
- Fix restarting of a 'reshape' if it was stopped in the middle.
- Fix a segfault when using v1 superblock.
- Make --write-mostly effective when re-adding a device to an array.
- Various minor fixes

Changes Prior to 2.6.3 release
- allow --write-behind to be set for --grow.
- When adding new disk to an array, don't reserve so much bitmap
space that the disk cannot store the required data. (Needed when
1.x array was created with older mdadm).
- When adding a drive that was a little too small, we did not get
the correct error message.
- Make sure that if --assemble find an array in the critical region
of a reshape, and cannot find the critical data to restart the
reshape, it gives an error message.
- Fix segfault with '--detail --export' and non-persistent
superblocks.
- Various manpage updates.
- Improved 'raid4' support (--assemble, --monitor)
- Option parsing fixes w.r.t -a
- Interpret --assemble --metadata=1 to allow any version 1.x
metadata, and be more specific in the metadata= message printed
with --examine --brief
- Fix spare migration in --monitor.

Changes Prior to 2.6.2 release
- --fail detached and --remove faulty can be used to fail and
remove devices that are no longer physically present.
- --export option for --detail or present information in a format
that can be processed by udev.
- fix internal bitmap allocation problems with v1.1, v1.2 metadata.
- --help now goes to stdout so you can direct it to a pager.
- Various manpage updates.
- Make --grow --add for linear arrays really work.
- --auto-detect to trigger in-kernel autodetect.
- Make return code for --detail --test more reliable. Missing
devices as well as failed devices cause an error.

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2007-12-14 Thread Davias
Dear Fumihito,
first of all, thanks for your fast reply!

1) No, ?No, I'm on amd64. I just went to the archive ubuntu site you
suggested and found out that the following exists:

mdadm-udeb_2.6.3+200709292116+4450e59-3ubuntu1_amd64.udeb 13-Dec-2007 01:04
76K
mdadm-udeb_2.6.3+200709292116+4450e59-3ubuntu1_i386.udeb13-Dec-2007 00:04
73K
mdadm-udeb_2.6.3+200709292116+4450e59-3ubuntu1_powerpc.udeb 13-Dec-2007 01:04
85K
mdadm-udeb_2.6.3+200709292116+4450e59-3ubuntu1_sparc.udeb 13-Dec-2007 01:04
91K

...it seems a fresh new 2.6.3 version of mdadm - maybe it cures the bug
?!?

2) First time I deal with mdadm RAID, but from experiences on other OS
with SW RAID, I learned (the hard way) that it is safe not to mess
around with driver version different than the ones that created the
arrays. But if I have no alternatives... I will try.

3) I tried to find details of this new 2.6.3, but found none. Good
common sense makes me think that the mantainer od mdadm was aware of
the bug and solved it in this new version, making the all scripting
from grub menu solution unnecessary...

Suggestions?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2007-12-14 Thread Davias
Dear Fumihito,
Thank you for your help in this very annoying bug with ubuntu (so long for the
newimproved version)...

I'm running 7.10, tried the above procedure and realized (as you stated)
that mdadm_2.6.2-1ubuntu2 DOES NOT work on 7.10 with grub trick.

3 questions:

1) How to degrade to mdadm_2.5.6-7ubuntu5_arch.deb as you suggest? In
Synaptic packet manager the option force is not available...

2) I'm a little bit scared of running a previous version of mdadm on my
RAID1 created with 2.6.2: is it safe?

3) Since this is just a workaround and not a solution (the system should
automatically start without user selecting a grub option), shall I wait
for a new mdadm?

Thanks in advance for yours and everybody's help
