[Bug 268434] Re: Screen Resolution is not being restored after relogin

2010-06-13 Thread Eduard Wulff
The workaround I found good at the time (see above) does not work with
lucid anymore.

After skimming through the xrandr-links in this bugreport I tried some
other workarounds.

This is what helps me under Kubuntu 10.04:

xrandr --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200

added as a desktop entry under systemsettings/autostart

When my Lenovo X200 is not docked this command gets ignored. When docked
all is okay the way I want it (and it used to work under 9.04 and maybe
some streaks of 9.10).

Krandr left my systemtray since I only clicked on it _once_ after EVERY
start when docked.

[Bug 576491] Re: CUPS does not print to HP OfficeJet-G85

2010-05-18 Thread Eduard Wulff
I am finally able to print (@tomlaunch: hplip 3.19.2)!

My solution: I put my venerable G85 to pasture (the new ink cartridges did not
work either - this seems to be a hardware problem) and replaced it with an
Officejet Pro 8500.
Works now for all my PCs via Ethernet, printouts are better quality, device is
faster and is hyped to be cheaper on ink.

@Till: I expect(ed) a recognizable test printout from HPLIP and no
blurred color all over the paper

I also can not scan: failed to open device `hpaio:/usb/OfficeJet_G85...

I switched the printer on/off, cut power/reapplied

I unplugged the usb-cable and replugged (dmesg shows my actions)

could there be a communication error? - see attached syslog

the printer worked last with kubuntu 9.10

Yeah! Flipping the switch - again - makes the device scan

It even tried to print - what came out resembles a testpage and I could
print the subject of an email from KMail ...

The things changed: I installed the ubuntu5.1 version of Ghostscript
8.71 from lucid-updates.

So there is hope for 5.2 ;-)

Just in case I will replace my nearly empty black cartridge tomorrow.

I mixed up the repositories - now I have enabled your ppa again and DP
is kind of working: artefacts, moving a window (e.g. Firefox with

I cleaned my xorg.conf:
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
# Option AccelMethod uxa
# Option EXAOptimizeMigration true
# Option MigrationHeuristicgreedy
# Option Tilingtrue

Hi Carey,
no change with the daily build black screen

I CAN start in with Displayport in VESA-mode. BUT: the resolution there is
1680x1050 - no use for my 1920x1200 monitor ...
Better VESA digital than analog INTEL me thinks. But for the native resolution
of my monitor there is ONLY analog INTEL.

I have attached the lspci and Xorg.0.log taken under VESA-driver
running.

[Bug 274517] [NEW] [intrepid KDE4] monitor settings not restored on login

2008-09-25 Thread Eduard Wulff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

I have an external monitor hooked up to my dockingstation.

I rotated the monitor (Viewsonic VP 211) left. It all works when set via
the systemsettings. 1200x1600 pixel.

When restarting the system it starts with the orientation and screen resolution
of the laptop display (lid cloesd BTW).
Expected behaviour: restore the last session like in hardy

Immediately after klicking to the Display icon in systemsettings the
display rotates and the wanted resolution is set. Awkward to click the
icon with the monitor rotated though.

The background image is left as if the monitor has the resolution of
1280x800 leaving the lower half of the monitor with random garbage
pixels - the application windows work as expected.

Expected behaviour: scale the image to the actual resolution
Setting the image to none is no workaround.

Could be related:
The splash screen (Kubuntu image and progress bar) does not work anymore - just
a blank screen until the login window for kdm.

[Bug 272684] Re: [intrepid] alternate installer hangs on ca-certificates

2008-09-21 Thread Eduard Wulff
after trying vmware too

AND using ext3 as filesystems - everything works as expected (in
VirtualBox and vmware).

I remember the times when setting up encrypted devices manually:
I had to install xfsprogs because the initial ram disk (kernel, modules) had no
xfs support.

Could this be the case here?
Then the installer(!!) should not have the option to format the encrypted
volumes with xfs or have the needed modules installed.

And the bug could have the name:
Installer does not work for xfs formated partitions on encrypted devices.

[Bug 146687] Re: [gutsy beta] installer hangs when formatting partitions

2007-09-30 Thread Eduard Wulff
FWIW:
I have installed Kubuntu on this machine (typing from the fresh install) with
the ALTERNATE installer. I told the installer to format the partitions.
The machine has an ASUS A8V mobo (see lspci abvove). It has an old IDE drive in
it and a big, fast SAMSUNG SATA drive.
The (alternate) installer did not set up grub properly. The machine boots from
the SATA drive as set up in the BIOS and as it are my preferences. But for
Kubuntu's installer/grub the IDE-drive hda comes first. Grub is written into
hda and thus never called - even if it would called, the device names hd0 and
hd1 are switched. I had to manually boot via grub and edit menu.lst and tell
grub-install to write to /dev/sda

Could this specific BIOS-Setup (and mix of IDE and SATA) cause this bug?
Debian installs fine on this machine, even with hd-encryption.
Windows-install is impossible without opening the case, detaching the
IDE-cables and booting it via grub afterwards.

[Bug 146687] [gutsy beta] installer hangs when formatting partitions

2007-09-29 Thread Eduard Wulff
Public bug reported:

I tried to update my (cryptsetup) Kubuntu 7.04 with an earlier tribe.
This failed - I had hope ... ;-)

Now I am trying a clean install with the gutsy beta. I added to #122645
after tribe 4 but my comments there where deleted. It could be related
and I still do not understand why the editing took place ...

The symptoms have not changed with the beta.

I want to install Kubuntu (as it was with 7.04) in /dev/sda6 (/boot as
ext2) and /dev/sda7 (/ as XFS).

The installer hangs when formatting the /dev/sda7 showing a dialog formatting
XFS 5%
I can format manually via mkfs.xfs

After removing the system partition check like in
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubiquity/+question/7844 it stalls on formatting
the swap partition.
After explicitly NOT using swap it stalls at Ermittle Dateisysteme (checking
filesystems?)

I have not tried installing without manual partitioning sinnce there are
other working OSs on this machine in different partitions and I want to
keep them.

[Bug 87515] can not mount a crypt root readonly

2007-02-24 Thread Eduard Wulff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

I am using (worked well in edgy) after a tweak (please see also bug
85640) an encrypted root partition in feisty.

I can NOT mount it readonly (- no checks on startup). My kernel line in
menu.list of grub is now changed to:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-8-generic root=/dev/mapper/cryptoroot rw
quiet vga=791 bootkbd=de

Is the cryptsetup kicking in too early in the boot process? Maybe should
wait for a check or issue a 'remount rw' after checking ...

Also look at the option bootkbd. This makes it easy to work with non-US
keyboard layouts. I saw it in Debian etch which works (encrypted / )
flawlessly from another partition in the same machine.

  Binary package hint: kcontrol

When i invoke kcontrol or Ubuntus Systemsteuerung and edit my samba-
shares using the expert-button in Freigaben (shares) I get this option
  written into smb.conf:

  msdfs proxy = no

sounds good but PREVENTS 100% that anybody from another machine will
_find_ my share. One could set up a proxy with the NAME no but I have
  not tried that.

Deleting the line via editing smb.conf directly works as exptected (-
  new share up and running).

+ This is also a bug in Debian etch/experimental 3.5.6

[Bug 85640] Re: Feisty: crypted root doesnt mount on start (cryptsetup)

2007-02-19 Thread Eduard Wulff
I can confirm this in feisty.

Workaround: see bug 21878
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/21878)

I also added:
setup_mapping()
{
+ # We need to wait for udev to do its stance
+ /sbin/udevsettle

I *think* it is redundant to the patch in 21878 but did not bother to
test it after 6 hours in the night ...

what do you think of my patch in bug 85640 ?

this applies to feisty though and there might be changes in the init
procedures compared to edgy.

[Bug 85640] udevsettle BAD in cryptsetup

2007-02-19 Thread Eduard Wulff
For me the workaorund WITHOUT my patch works finally.

Be very careful when/from where/what to include in the initrd!

I wish (already on the list) there were a setup option to encrypt the
filesystem like in Debian etch.

Notebooks without HD-encryption ( / is essential IMO ) are a desaster
waiting to happen ...

[Bug 50048] Re: Unable to adjust refresh rate..

2006-11-07 Thread Eduard Wulff
I have the same problem here.

HP nc6400 (Notebook)

switched off DDC

xrandr lists only 60Hz (as I have force-configured it in xorg.conf)

1280x1024 gives 85Hz which my LCD (borked DDC-Infos from there) reports
being capable but causes it to flicker that I am in fear the monitor
wears out ...

800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200 all give 60Hz and the image is stable.

My settings in xorg.conf are ignored.

** Attachment added: xorg.conf - do not even ask me about dual monitors ...
