[Bug 305005] [NEW] kernel upgrade broke wireless on eeepc

2008-12-03 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

the backports modules. Now that I upgraded to 2.6.27-9, the wireless no
longer works. Needless to say, this is not a good thing.

[Bug 173350] Re: Caps lock LED changes state even when caps lock is mapped to ctrl

2008-11-26 Thread Eythian
Not for me, although there is a weird thing that xmodmap mappings now
only apply to the keyboards that are plugged in - remap, and then plug
an external keyboard and it'll behave like you never ran xmodmap on the
new keyboard. Remap afterwards, and it behaves like you expect. Are you
possibly seeing something along those lines?

[Bug 301887] [NEW] network folders in conduit don't provide their name

2008-11-24 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conduit

I have my desktop machine sharing a few folders that I was planning on
using to sync content to various laptops. On the desktop, each folder
has a name, and that's fine. However, when you see them over the

[Bug 301878] [NEW] music applet often uses lots of CPU

2008-11-24 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

The music applet uses large amounts of CPU when rhythmbox is playing.

Usually (although not always) the music applet will be using between 30
and 70% of a CPU when all it is (apparently) doing is updating a string
every second. This is much, much more than rhythmbox which is actually
playing the music.

For example, a line from top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
 7143 robin 20 0 339m 38m 13m S 40 1.9 116:40.65 python

(this process is:
 7143 ?S117:15 python /usr/lib/gnome-applets/music-applet
--oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Music_Applet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=21

[Bug 299849] [NEW] nautilus CD burner gets the wrong drive

2008-11-19 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have two DVD burners in my computer.

If I put a blank disk into one, Nautilus pops up and asks what I'd like
to do. I can say I want to burn files to it.

If I then do so, and the disk is in one of the drives, when I hit burn
and fill out the title, it tells me to insert a disk. It is defaulting
to the drive that doesn't have a blank disk in it.

Instead, it should use the drive for which the burner window was opened,
or at the very least, default to the first one that actually has a blank
disk in it.

[Bug 126333] Re: Regression - Volume Control using gnome panel applet and keyboard shortcut alternates mute / % volume during sliding

2008-11-12 Thread Eythian
In intrepd (and I'm not sure if this is a change or not), this still
happens, but only with PCM. Changing the applet slider when it's
controlling PCM causes things like the LR balance to unlock, and the
channels end up out of kilter, and jump around and so on. With master it
moves smoothly.

[Bug 295429] [NEW] pam_encryptfs.so causes authentication to be slow

2008-11-07 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

I have the encrypted ~/Private enabled. In /etc/pam.d/common-auth is the line:
authoptionalpam_encryptfs.so unwrap

If that line is commented out, then doing something like 'sudo ls' is
instantanious after I enter my password.

If that line is not commented out (like normal), 'sudo ls', or anything
else involving my password such as logging in, and unlocking the
screensaver take about 4 or 5 seconds longer than they need to.

The following is also syslogged. I'm not sure if it's relevant or not,
but that 5 second delay seems to be the pause that occurs.

Nov 8 17:33:00 gulik sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: Called
Nov 8 17:33:00 gulik sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: username = [robin]

annoying.

Clarification: the wireless button doesn't work, wireless itself appears

So, my experimentation bears fruit. I created a file (for test purposes, it's
clearly not a global solution):
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/acpi$ cat if-asus-eee.sh
#!/bin/bash
`dirname $0`/$1

which doesn't really test to see if it is an eeepc, it just runs the
command anyway. Now my volume (mute, vol up, vol dn) work just fine.
Wireless doesn't (sleep and brightness always have.)

2008-11-04 Thread Eythian
On an install of Intrepid, the volume keys are still invisible to X.
There is a package 'eeepc-acpi-scripts' that looks like it has
potential, but it conflicts with acpi-support, which is required by
ubuntu-desktop, and so it's uninstallable. This is with an eee 701. The
keys worked in Hardy with the addition of eeepc-acpi-source or whatever
it was.

[Bug 293442] [NEW] nicotine crashes when you perform a search

2008-11-03 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nicotine

1) Open nicotine
2) Once it's connected to the server, run a search
3) Watch the connection count approach 1000
4) Moments before it gets there, watch it freeze up

On the console it says:
Can't save config file, I/O error: [Errno 24] Too many open files:
'/home/robin/.nicotine/config.new'

This makes the program completely unusable :(

[Bug 293417] [NEW] rhythmbox never finishes the last track of an album

2008-11-03 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I play through an album, expecting rb to stop after the last track,
it does. However, the 'seconds' count never resets to zero. It's as if
you paused the track right at the end. This means that the 'last played'
time for that final track is never updated.

This is on Intrepid and is a regression from Hardy.

[Bug 286321] [NEW] if ssh:// connection gets lost, file copies get stuck

2008-10-20 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you attempt to copy a file to a disconnected network location, the
copy operation gets stuck.

To reproduce:
1) have a nautilus window open with an ssh:// connection to somewhere
2) leave it alone for a long time, until the ssh connection disconnects
(bouncing the network or similar may have the same effect)
3) don't realise this has happened, and attempt to drag a local file to this
ssh connection

there is a kernel bug of some type going on and the process gets wedged

[Bug 205976] Re: rhythmbox holds on to removable drives

2008-06-14 Thread Eythian
In gutsy it worked. Rhythmbox would release the file. In hardy, it
doesn't. You can't eject the device from within rhythmbox because there
is nowhere to do so. It's not an mp3 player, so doesn't show up in the
list of devices. Basically, if you don't know that rb is locking the
file, you can';t unmount it. Given that it used to work, this seems like
a regression.

I'll have a go with the other things you suggest and see if I can make it

[Bug 236819] Re: X server segfault in nvidia drivers

2008-06-02 Thread Eythian
I just managed to reproduce this, by doing exactly the same thing as I
did last time: press 'v' (view source) on a particular email in kmail. I
tried again, going for a different email and it didn't crash. Now,
neither does the email that caused it the first two times. I'll leave
the email hanging around for a bit, in case it's useful. It's also not
personal, so I'm attaching it to this in case it should be useful. I'm
still not able to determine if it is this email itself causing the
issue, I don't use 'v' all that much and as it seems to be intermittent,
it's hard to test properly. But maybe it has a funny character or
something.

[Bug 236819] [NEW] X server segfault in nvidia drivers

2008-06-02 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

My X server just crashed. It'd been running for several days, with
compiz enabled using the Nvidia proprietary drivers. I pressed a button
that would have opened a new window, and was immediately dropped to
text-mode until GDM came back. The video card wasn't doing anything
stressful, although I was watching a movie using totem about 3 minutes
before.

I've attached the Xorg.0.log.old file that contains the information, but
the relevant bit of backtrace is:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x6a) [0x48402a]
1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x7fc9ecd9d100]
2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so(_nv000754X+0x6a)
[0x7fc9ea83937a]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

This is on AMD64, and it's been running in this configuration quite
happily since hardy beta. I don't know if it's relevant, but I am
currently running hardy-proposed. This is the first time I've seen this
crash.

think it's a last.fm fault.

I did that, and it worked on one of my computers, but on another it still
crashes reliably on startup. If I re-add it it is fine until the next
startup.

[Bug 225654] [NEW] unkillable totem process

2008-05-02 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have a totem process that can't be killed:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps ax|grep 27714
27714 ?Dl 6:49 totem
file:///home/robin/Download/torrent/done/%5BDB%5D_Bleach_151_%5BE3DC6A4C%5D.avi

file:///home/robin/Download/torrent/done/%5BDB%5D_Bleach_151_%5BE3DC6A4C%5D.avi
27977 pts/0R+ 0:00 grep 27714

Note how the CPU time is increasing also: it's using 100% of one of the
CPUs. There is no window open for this (it was being used, it finished,
so I closed it, and the process remained behind using the CPU). The
parent process is 'init', which obviously I can't kill. I own the
process, and regardless, a 'sudo kill' makes no difference.

This was gutsy. I don't know if it's reproducible, I don't want to try, it
deleted my inbox. It didn't go to trash, basically it thought that the
messages shouldn't be there any more and removed them all.

2008-04-30 Thread Eythian
This is still in Hardy, just FYI. When you print, you have 'Print to
file' which can do PDF and asks you where to save it, and you have
'PDF', which causes the file to go nowhere, as far as the user is
concerned. PDF should be hidden from user dialogues I think, it's isn't
necessary and isn't useful.

2008-04-28 Thread Eythian
Volume applet still doesn't work correctly for me with Hardy on my
laptop when using the mouse wheel on the volume applet. I've attached a
video showing what's going on. Note that I'm always turning the mouse
wheel up, one click at a time, and when the applet shows mute, there is
no sound (it is actually muted). The volume level jumping down is due to
the applet, not me turning the wheel backwards.

[Bug 218015] Re: rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change

2008-04-18 Thread Eythian
You are correct in how it works, however I see it as a bug because it
doesn't make any sense from a usability point of view. If you tell the
system that rb should be outputting to (say) your external sound card,
or another computer, you don't want it to revert when the track changes.
That means that every 4 or 5 minutes you're going to have to change the
settings again.

Even with the crossfader plugin turned on, when you pause it closes the
stream and so goes back to default on resume, which is still annoying.

The ideal solution would be for RB to behave like it did until about a
week ago, where it held the stream open even when not playing, so that
it always came out the same device. Maybe there is a feature in
pulseaudio to allow this to happen in some other way?

Start rhythmbox playing something, run the pulseaudio volume control
(pavucontrol), right-click the rhythmbox stream and send it to another device
or computer. When the track changes in RB, it will start coming out the
default device again.

[Bug 218015] [NEW] rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change

2008-04-15 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

After the last rhythmbox update (I think), if I redirect rhythmbox's
sink via the pulseaudio volume control to something else (in this case,
RTP sink), then it resets to the default after track-change. This didn't
happen yesterday.

A workaround is to turn on the crossfader plugin.

This still occurs in Hardy. When having dual-monitor side-by-side and

of workspace 1 end up on workspace 2, that's a little annoying but not a
big deal. Having dual monitor under-and-over and turning off the top

I have two computers running pulseaudio, both of them are set to talk to

Sometimes when my wireless drops out and music is playing through PA

[Bug 210076] [NEW] wireshark freezes when opening capture options

2008-03-31 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

When opening the options on an interface prior to capturing from it,
wireshark freezes.

Steps:
1) Open wireshark (Apps->Internet->Wireshark (as root))
2) OK the warning that comes up
3) Click 'list available capture interfaces' (left-most button on toolbar)
4) Click 'options' beside any of the interfaces
5) Watch as a window fails to open, and wireshark doesn't do anything more.

** Affects: wireshark (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Changed in: wireshark (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: None => wireshark

[Bug 210068] [NEW] installing virtualbox doesn't include the required modules

2008-03-31 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

When installing virtualbox (apps->add/remove programs), you don't get
the required modules. This means that by default, it won't work. The
error message that comes up says that it can't find the module, but it
doesn't say anything about how you'd install it. It may be good (at the
least) to make it so that it does say something here, or have it include
the appropriate module when it installs.

[Bug 209489] [NEW] wireless goes missing after suspend/resume

2008-03-30 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

I've upgraded from gutsy to hardy beta, and now my wireless usually
stops working after suspend/resume. This worked pretty much 100% in

I've attached everything I can think of from when it wasn't working,
taken just after a resume.

[Bug 207553] [NEW] screen doesn't switch off by itself

Public bug reported:

I have power management on my desktop set to turn the screen off after
40 minutes, however it never actually turns off. The screensaver comes
on (just blanking the screen), and remains that way. According to xset

/dev/mapper/primary_vg-home on /home type reiserfs (rw,relatime)
