[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-23 Thread Fedor Isakov
Apple themselves recognize that Numlock must be supported on non-apple
OSes:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1216

In short, yes, Clear button is supposed to work as a Numlock, only not
in MacOS.

I've seen many discussions on this topic already, I think whatever
hardware is used, Ubuntu must support what Ubuntu users want. If this
particular keyboard is plugged into a Mac it's a Mac keyboard, when it's
used with Windows it's a Windows keyboard, and when used with Ubuntu? I
guess it should be Ubuntu keyboard!

I'm an Ubuntu user and I want Numlock. I don't care whether it is
supposed to be used as such or not. I don't care about what is printed
on the buttons (there are keyboards without any text at all, so what?).
I want the functionality that I'm used to.

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-23 Thread Fedor Isakov
Justin,

you may be surprised to learn, that despite you don't believe people are
looking for Numlock button where it's supposed to be, it's actually the
case. Well, except maybe for hardcore Mac users. But they don't have a
reason to look for it anyway.

On the other hand, who really knows what Clear button is supposed to do?
Given the pictogram displayed on that key, I bet rarely anyone without
Mac experience would be able to decipher that. Also, BootCamp emulates
Numlock on Windows with Clear key.

I think people are smart enough to guess that Clear == Numlock.

[Bug 229530] Re: Keyring does not automatically unlock after hibernate

2008-07-21 Thread Fedor Isakov
See the option /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/gnome_keyring_hibernate in

Strangely, the value for this key is set by default to true, while
corresponding value for locking the screen on suspend is false by
default, which is inconsistent.

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-20 Thread Fedor Isakov
Tested the latest kernel from hardy-proposed (2.6.24.20), results are
just as expected:

 - on startup the numpad keys behave normally, entering digits
 - pressing Clear button switches the numpad to navigation mode

Excellent, thanks a lot for fixing this!

Re: numlock or navigation buttons by default: it depends. I'd rather
prefer navigation mode by default, and switch on the numpad when I need
a numpad, but that's my personal preference. Luckily, it can be
configured  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NumLock.

[Bug 219675] Re: Hibernate/Suspend to disk and RAM halts since change from kernel 2.6.20 to 2.6.24

2008-06-16 Thread Fedor Isakov
Running Hardy x64 on a Mac Pro (early 2008 model, ATI graphics card).

Hibernate (suspend-to-disk) used to work with kernel 2.6.24.16, then
stopped working after an upgrade to 2.6.24.18 with the exact same
symptoms.

Just enabled hardy-proposed repo, run the upgrade to 8.04.1, which also
installed 2.6.24.19 kernel: hibernate works again.

[Bug 223134] [NEW] Association with an AP is kept after logging off the user

2008-04-27 Thread Fedor Isakov
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Just finished installing Hardy on a notebook with Broadcom wi-fi
chipset. I noticed that after I had configured the wi-fi and logged off
from Gnome session, the wireless was still on and associated with the
AP, even after having logged in as another user. This is unexpected,
since the key (for WPA2 Personal) is kept in the my keyring, which
should only be available after I log in to my account. Thus, I expect
that after I log off, the keyring expires and the wireless connection
should be closed.

This is a potential security vulnerability.

[Bug 215825] Re: Open URL in browser doesn't work

Thanks for the tip!

Actually, xdg-open doesn't seem to work on my system, running it
manually produces this:

So, I guess it's not a pidgin bug, but rather xdg-utils's one.

[Bug 212295] [NEW] Can't print as bitmap with on HP inkjet printer

2008-04-05 Thread Fedor Isakov
Public bug reported:

Using inkscape 0.46-0ubuntu1 in Hardy beta, I'm unable to make it print
anything as bitmap. My printer doesn't support PS, it's a cheap inkjet
printer (HP C3180), and the only way inkscape could print on it is if
bitmap printing is used. This worked well in Gutsy.

When I select rendering=bitmap it produces text like the following on
the first page, then I have to cancel printing:

%!PS-Adobe:-3.0
%%Creator: cairo 1.5.14
etc.

I assume this is the PS header, which means my choice to print as bitmap
has been ignored.

[Bug 195636] Re: /dev/input/wacom device missing for Bamboo Fun

2008-03-28 Thread Fedor Isakov
The version of wacom driver in the kernel source tree is vastly
outdated. The earliest kernel version at kernel.org that includes
support for Bamboo Fun is 2.6.25-rc7. I guess it's unlikely the new
driver is going to make it into Hardy final.

Why is that it took so long for the new version to propagate into the
kernel? The changes that make Bamboo Fun work were committed 5 months
ago, according to cvs history:
http://linuxwacom.cvs.sourceforge.net/linuxwacom/linuxwacom-
dev/src/2.6.19/wacom_wac.c?r1=1.4r2=1.5 .

[Bug 207330] [NEW] gthumb is hogging on the cpu after searching for images

2008-03-26 Thread Fedor Isakov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Hardy x86_64:

After searching for all images in an icons collection (about 1700

[Bug 130870] Re: Bluetooth headset no longer works [regression]

2008-03-24 Thread Fedor Isakov
I'm trying to make my BT headset to work in Hardy x86_64, so far without
any luck.

The old module+btsco solution hangs the applications that try to use
them, the bluez audio service doesn't work and the bluetooth-alsa's
headsetd prints following when attempting to play a file:

$ headsetd -n

headsetd[7529]: Incoming RFCOMM hs connection from 00:0D:44:5D:29:2C accepted

headsetd[7529]: unable to open SCO channel to headset: Connection timed out
headsetd[7529]: Changing state: Opening--ZombieAppl

At the same time the kernel log is flooded with messages like these:

[  315.190720] hci_scodata_packet: hci0 SCO packet for unknown connection
handle 1
[  315.190725] hci_scodata_packet: hci0 SCO packet for unknown connection

It seems BT headset support is completely broken in Hardy beta.

[Bug 163250] Mouse cursor disappears in firefox during page loading

2007-11-16 Thread Fedor Isakov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm experiencing a rather peculiar bug with mouse cursor disappearing
within a Firefox window, but only while a page is being loaded. After a
page is completely loaded, the cursor is restored.

I managed to link this oddity to my usage of enhanced zoom desktop
feature in Compiz. In short, the bug shows itself after I used the zoom
feature at least once, and it won't go until X server is restarted.

I have settings for mouse cursor in enhanced zoom desktop different from the
standard:
   Sync mouse: off
   Scale the mouse pointer: on
   Hide original mouse pointer: on
   Restrain the mouse to zoom area: on
   Mouse panning: on

I tried setting Option HWcursor off in xorg.conf, but it resulted in
buggy mouse cursor, with flickering and screen artifacts.

I'm running Gutsy with all the latest updates. My video card is NVidia
Quadro FX 1500M and I'm using nvidia-glx-new.

[Bug 81396] Re: After sync palm says: HotSync operation was interrupted

2007-10-29 Thread Fedor Isakov
I just had the same error while synchronizing my palm TX with freshly
installed Gutsy. With Feisty I never experienced anything like this, and
I changed nothing in the palm/desktop config.

After I closed the gnome-pilot dialog, the applet's icon stays green. On
any attempt to restart/pause daemon it keeps telling me the
synchronization wasn't finished I that I have to wait for it to finish.
There's no way to restart the daemon from the applet's menu.

'killall gpilotd' doesn't help either.

Surprisingly, the hotsync still works and finishes without problems,
although the gnome-pilot status window does not appear during the sync.

Note: I have Evolution window open at the time of hotsync, this may be
related.

[Bug 53060] Re: HP Compaq nw9440 - hibernation problem

2007-08-31 Thread Fedor Isakov
Good news. It *seems* the latest BIOS upgrade from HP (F.1B) fixes a
bug in the video BIOS that had caused the sudden reboots on resuming
from suspend. I installed the update from here:

I also set an option in acpi-support:

POST_VIDEO=false

 -- and suspend-to-RAM finally started to work. 5 cycles so far,
everything is normal.

HTH.

[Bug 53060] Re: HP Compaq nw9440 - hibernation problem

2007-07-23 Thread Fedor Isakov
Actually I currently have different configuration for acpi, which is a
result of many trial-and-errors. Please see below:

ACPI_SLEEP=true
ACPI_HIBERNATE=true
ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem
MODULES=ipw3945
MODULES_WHITELIST=
SAVE_VBE_STATE=true
VBESTATE=/var/lib/acpi-support/vbestate
POST_VIDEO=true
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true
USE_DPMS=true
HIBERNATE_MODE=platform
LOCK_SCREEN=true
DISABLE_DMA=true
STOP_SERVICES=mysql psmouse bluetooth cupsys
RESTART_IRDA=false
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true

I also have latest BIOS from HP (I believe it is version F.1A).
http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=encc=usprodNameId=1839862prodTypeId=321957prodSeriesId=1839859swLang=8taskId=135swEnvOID=1093

With this configuration and kernel 2.6.20-16 I'm able use both suspend
and hibernate. HOWEVER, there are major problems with both of them.
Unfortunately, the problems are not easily reproducible, and usually it
takes long time to run a test, which is not a luxury I can afford. This
is also the reason I haven't reported them yet.

Suspend-to-RAM:

 - works, but you can never be sure the laptop is going to resume
normally or perform standard boot on attempt to return from standby. In
this respect, the symptoms are just like described by Peter Funk above,
only that for me it happens approx. 1/3 of the time. Usually the laptop
would suspend and resume ok if left in suspended state for relatively
short time, like a couple of hours. If left overnight, there's 9/10
probability that it would boot up instead of resuming.

Hibernate:

 - works *somewhat*. Sometimes I get HAL failed to hibernate popup
message on return from hibernation. Some other times the system is
distinctly sluggish on return, feels like running on half the CPU power.
In both situations reboot helps restore the functionality.

[Bug 29043] Re: gpilotd runs away with CPU after completing hotsync

2007-06-15 Thread Fedor Isakov
I think this bug needs to be reviewed. I can confirm the same problem as
the original reporter: gpilotd consuming 100% CPU after a successful
sync. Actually, there are two outcomes after a sync: either gpilotd
starts eating up the CPU, or the Pilot applet stops responding to
requests (gnome-pilot settings dialog are not displayed). In both
situations the solutions is to run 'killall gpilotd'. In the latter
case, this follows by several gnome-pilot settings windows being opened.

All this is happening on Feisty with Palm TX connected via USB. I'm
using 'usb:' as the palm device, not /dev/pilot.

[Bug 53060] Re: HP Compaq nw9440 - hibernation problem

2007-06-10 Thread Fedor Isakov
Just to confirm that hibernation can indeed be made working in Feisty
(2.6.20-16-generic). Here's the settings I had to tweak in order to make
it work for me:

/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia:

options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0
options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords=PerfLevelSrc=0x

(the latter option gets rid of the flickering in Beryl)

/etc/default/acpi-support:

ACPI_SLEEP=true
ACPI_HIBERNATE=true
ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem
MODULES=
MODULES_WHITELIST=ipw3945
SAVE_VBE_STATE=true
VBESTATE=/var/lib/acpi-support/vbestate
POST_VIDEO=true
USE_DPMS=true
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true
HIBERNATE_MODE=platform
LOCK_SCREEN=true
STOP_SERVICES=mysql
RESTART_IRDA=false
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true

The HIBERNATE_MODE=platform seems to be very important, without it
the system would either lock up on resume or the kacpid process would
start consuming 100% of the CPU and the system would lock up eventually.

As to suspend, it *seems* to work: the system is alive after resuming
from suspend, but the keyboard and the mouse are not working. Pressing
the power button makes the laptop shutdown, so I figure this could also
be made working given some efforts.

[Bug 53060] Re: HP Compaq nw9440 - hibernation problem

2007-03-15 Thread Fedor Isakov
I tried to set the magic option to nvidia kernel module as per the
following URL:

http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Troubleshooting_nVidia#Suspend2

The option is:

options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0

As a result, the system is now able to return from hibernation and is
functioning almost normally, except that ACPI stops working. Neither
tail -f /var/log/acpid, nor sudo strace -p `pidof acpid` report
*anything* when I, for example, plug or unplug the power cord. So, I
figure ACPI is broken after return from hibernation.

Any ideas how to fight this?

[Bug 53060] Re: HP Compaq nw9440 - hibernation problem

2007-02-20 Thread Fedor Isakov
I can confirm suspend/hibernation is broken on nw9440 running Edgy. The
symptoms are different, however. The laptop goes into suspend or
hibernate, shutting down completely. On returning from suspend, the
laptop is just freezed. If restarted after hibernation, the hardware
seems to be up, the display is black, the mouse pointer is active, and
sometimes it's even possible to get into the console with Ctrl+Alt+F1.
Very seldom, it even manages to show the Gnome unlock dialog, and then
it's possible to resume normal work. But much more often it just
displays black screen with a small rectangle filled with random pixes.
From that point there is no other way but to force shutdown and restart.

I made a few experiments trying to get working suspend/hibernation with
noapic or nolapic kernel parameters, all to no avail.

[Bug 53014] Re: not building on edgy (kernel 2.6.17)

2006-12-11 Thread Fedor Isakov
Hi,
I fixed this problem by patching module.h as following:

--- linux-headers-2.6.17-10/include/linux/module.h  2006-09-23

+++ linux-headers-2.6.17-10.patched/include/linux/module.h  2006-12-11

 #define MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(type,name) \

Simply redefining MODULE_PARM via MODULE_PARM_DESC.

Just my $0.02.

[Bug 49221] Re: Unable to start applications after suspend/hibernation

2006-12-06 Thread Fedor Isakov
I does still happen on Edgy albeit significantly less often than it used
to on Dapper.

[Bug 63941] Re: Opening an evolution email from beagle search opens firefox instead

I'm having the same issue right now. Can you post your workaround here,
please?

[Bug 63941] Re: Opening an evolution email from beagle search opens firefox instead

2006-11-29 Thread Fedor Isakov
Thanks. Although this works for _some_ results, it's not a real
solution, because:

1. Firefox opens an empty tab for each attempt to load an email from
Beagle search

2. Some results just show up a blank message window with no content

Need a better/real fix.

[Bug 24804] Re: Gnome PalmOS limited charset support

2006-08-05 Thread Fedor Isakov
There is a working patch for pilot-link 0.11.8 that fixes the problem. I
tried it myself with windows-1251 encoding and was able to sync Palm
with Evolution without problems: all russian characters are reencoded to
utf8 and displayed correctly.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214611#c33

I'll submit a request with pilot-link product to include this patch in
Ubuntu version of pilot-link.

[Bug 24804] Re: Gnome PalmOS limited charset support

2006-08-05 Thread Fedor Isakov
Ah, aparently I need to learn more about Debian/Ubuntu development
process. I found a Debian bug (almost 2 years old) that deals with this
issue. The maintainer, though, seems to be reluctant to force the patch
into Debian, the issue was forwarded to pilot-link developers. They are,
however, reluctant to fix it, too, for no aparent reason. Here are the
references.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=269731
http://bugs.pilot-link.org/1335

The original patch (not the one I referred to above) was submitted to a
mailing list 4 (four!) years ago. It's unbelievable such a small issue
takes forever to fix. Here is the original posting (in Russian):

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-cyr/2002-August/msg5.html

I see that there's very little chance this ever gets fixed in pilot-link
head, but maybe it could be fixed in Debian version of the package?
