[Bug 230102]

2014-02-06 Thread Flávio Etrusco
(In reply to :Gavin Sharp (email ga...@gavinsharp.com) from comment #193)
(In reply to Sam Steingold from comment #191)
We do not draw conclusions solely based on volume of Bugzilla activity, and
we certainly don't extrapolate that feedback across our entire user base
 blindly.

Nobody said that you should. This kind of rhetoric isn't very helpful.

C-q should be protected by a warning. No other major browser - Opera or
Chrome - has the obnoxious behavior of dying on a typo (wiping the sessions
  and downloads).

As mentioned already in this bug, we do not wipe sessions and downloads on
 Cmd+Q.

Nonetheless there's a plethora of cases that will cause data loss.

I'm not claiming there are no problems with our existing behavior worth
addressing, just that this bug is no longer a useful place to track them.
There are other bugs that already cover related issues (bug 667912, bug
565567, bug 404081, bug 628156), and I encourage people to file new,
narrowly focused bugs if they have specific suggestions/issues not already
 covered.

Implement hold threshold timer? Very discoverable. Yeah I see this very much
being implemented :-/
What to say about bug 565567? It could be rephrased implement bug 419009 but
only on Mac! Now you're getting cute. (At least the ticket contains a link to
a seemingly helpful extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/always-ask/ )
The other two aren't quite the same issue as this.

At a very high level, I do not think we will be changing the avoid
prompting and make it easy to restore stance.

I can't see how it is a win not to ask in a situation you'll lose either
private windows, non-resuming downloads, modified inputs on Web 2.0
pages or poorly-made old-style pages, etc.

[Bug 490798] Re: Laptop fans not tested

2011-02-23 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Clark, just search launchpad and you'll see how/the many models that have bogus
BIOS or whatnot that messes temperature sensors and fans.
IMHO CPU is just less stressed under Ubuntu is innacurate; it happens on few
systems and by a small margin.
The test should at check whether the reported/calculated temperate makes sense
and maybe stress it a bit the trigger the lowest threshold. Or of course just
believe manualli entered data...

[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-05-09 Thread Flávio Etrusco
We're going nowhere with this bug, we didn't even get word on whether this is
expected or a powertop bug (the discussion in debian doesn't hold up) or
whatever.
Since this happens is mainstream kernels, I guess somebody will have to get the
balls to post to LKML or the kernel bugzilla 8-)

[Bug 88530] Re: USB ports: connect-debounce failed, port disabled

2010-05-05 Thread Flávio Etrusco
You may be correct, but it doesn't totally invalidate the theory; the
kernel may just have been made more picky/correct about errors returned
by the USB controller. For me, cleaning the usb plug fixed it.

[Bug 88530] Re: USB ports: connect-debounce failed, port disabled

2010-05-05 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Min Pae, the posts I found across the web is that this is usually caused by bad
electric contact of the usb plug. I suggest you verify there's no residues
inside the plug and maybe clean it with cotton swabs...
As it seems, the real bug is that when this problem happens the system freezes
for several seconds from time to time.

[Bug 571179] Re: Wireless Network disabled after initial boot (random)

2010-04-28 Thread Flávio Etrusco
I have the same problem with an Ethernet connection.
Since I don't know much about network-manager internals, let's search for
coincidences:
- Are there 2 connections with in network-manager? (right-click the
connection icon, choose Edit Connections...)
- Is your connection configured to be Available to all users? (mine isn't)
- What's your original installation? (mine was 9.10, gradually - and frequently
- updated into 10.04)

[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick

2010-04-21 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Problem is I reported this bug because I don't expect load-balancing
wake-ups on a single-cpu setup. I don't know what is the expected number
of wake-ups with multiple CPUs or HyperThreading. If you can reproduce
the problem of running without HyperThreading, then maybe this is the
same bug or related.

[Bug 359789] Re: gnome-screensaver rewrites its config when idle

2010-04-08 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Follow up (sorry for the spam): I can't reproduce any random rewrite either
while idling (with screen saver inactive) or during normal use. The apparently
random rewrite is because gnome waits quite some time to write the file after
changing the setting.
Obs. For inactive I don't mean disabled in the configuration, I mean not
launched. This applies for the previous post too.

[Bug 289322] Re: gnome-power-manager put display to sleep timer incorrect when CPU is being used

2010-04-08 Thread Flávio Etrusco
The original poster says:

(...)
As a second step, it then uses cpu load as an additional measure.
(...)
This is great for determining when to suspend or hibernate. But it is
counter intuitive for turning off the display. There are a large number
of bugs filed againt g-p-m for display blanking issues: not working at
all, intermittent failure, other stuff. I believe it is because of the cpu
criteria that no one is expecting.
(...)

AFAICS this is exactly the bug I'm proving.
However I'm confusing the terminology myself. When I said dimming, I meant
that the display was completely off, and actually seemingly with DPMS and not
just with backlight off. BTW dimming seems to be working perfectly BTW (not
affected by CPU).

OMG. It's been sometime since I tested running on battery. Now unplugging from
AC doesn't reduce backlight brightness, and the display doesn't dim after

Does g-p-m count dimming even on AC? Maybe this is the problem? And maybe CPU
detection is too sensible (mine shows 4% in use)? Is disk access accounted for?

Simple test:

3) Time for display to go off with some applications open: 2:34min.
4) Time for display to go off with all applications closed: 1:12min.

[Bug 556610] [NEW] cheese crashes if no camera is detected and a shot is taken (tried)

2010-04-06 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make your camera unavailable (e.g. unload the module or unplug the cam).
2) Open cheese. It will show the red sign saying the no camera was detected.
3) Press Take a Photo.
4) When the countdown finishes, the program crash.
Of course I don't expect it to work ;-)
But I wouldn't expect it to crash; the button had to be disabled. Or some joke
be presented :-P

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  1) Suspend to ram.
  2) Resume by pressing the enclosure power button.
  3) Mouse cursor appears, other than that the screen is blank (black).
Switching to the console works, but simply shows a message that suggests the
hdd is shut down. Alt+SysRq commands show no active tasks and doesn't seem to
to have effect.

2010-03-31 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Funny how the comments in the Debian tracker suggests says worksforme and
suggests powertop is outdated without any data.
Latest powertop here lists this:

Top causes for wakeups:
  44,1% (199,2) kernel core : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)
  26,5% (119,6) firefox-bin : hrtimer_start_range_ns (hrtimer_wakeup)
  12,0% ( 54,2) interrupt : extra timer interrupt
   7,8% ( 35,2) interrupt : ath, HDA Intel
   1,8% ( 8,0) kernel core : usb_hcd_poll_rh_status (rh_timer_func)
   1,3% ( 6,0) interrupt : ata_piix, ata_piix, uhci_hcd:usb5, uhci_hcd:

And yes, it coredumps.

[Bug 387620] Re: [karmic] laptop overheats and shuts off -- fans at low speed

2010-03-31 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Weird that one thing is that is mentioned in several similar/related problems
and is not mentioned here (and worked for me): use kernel boot parameters
acpi.power_nocheck=1 acpi_osi=linux.
Several previous kernels (from 1~2 years ago) don't have this problem in my
notebook, so yes, it's a regression to me.
Sanal: you can control the throttling either with CPUfrequency scaling
monitor panel applet or in the terminal (google for it), but I don't think
it'll alleviate your problem just a little bit. I suggest you try the kernel
parameters above.

This modification wasn't really asked for. XFree86/Xorg (xkb?) have always
worked the way this report asks, until a couple of years.
You don't need a Brazilian Windows. You just need a US keyboard and make '
(apostrophe) followed by C output a Ç.

[Bug 407547] Re: nautilus crashes while changing view modes

2010-03-22 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Do you mean it occurs now or whether it occurred in Lucid timeframe?
It's been some time since I last saw this bug, but it's never been easily
reproducible and it definitely occurred during Lucid development.
It occurred more frequently when changing the view while loading a very large
directory or a directory with lots of thumbnails. Unfortunately I changed
machines and think I don't have a good test-case anymore...

[Bug 530751] Re: Battery Discharging is a horribly worded message

2010-03-16 Thread Flávio Etrusco
In some notebooks with crappy BIOS - i.e. mine - this message actually
can make sense - in an annoying way -, because the ACPI (?) reports the
battery is discharging even for the natural discharge, while the
notebook is plugged.

[Bug 289322] Re: gnome-power-manager needs different idleness definition for turning off display

2010-03-14 Thread Flávio Etrusco
It's hard to confirm/debug this issue because timeout isn't respected
most of the time.

[Bug 289322] Re: gnome-power-manager needs different idleness definition for turning off display

2010-03-14 Thread Flávio Etrusco
Ok, a simple experiment doesn't seem to confirm this bug exactly.
1) I set up the put display to sleep when inactive to 1 minute.
2) Leave the desktop idle with the programs (I'm using) open (firefox, pidgin,
hgtk, gnome-terminal, etc): it takes 3:34min to turn off display.
3) Leave a cpu-intensive task running (make clean; make a project) and repeat
step 2: it takes 3:47min to turn off display. (task took about 1:30min to
complete)

Doesn't any other action (keyboard, mouse, touchpad) bring the screen
on?
